Why you should role play in Skyrim

Posted: 02 Mar 2018 06:32 AM PST

The game was designed to be role-played. Many players set out to spam use of their skills to quickly level them, but this mainly has the effect of making the game boring.

Many people have observed, and I agree, that some of the 'found objects,' like armor and weapons, seem weak. And, this is mostly because you have artifically raised your enchanting skill, resulting in your ability to enchant better equipment. Or you have spammed up your smithing, or alchemy, and now you can craft better things than you can find.

Yes - it is designed that way. The reason is that you are becoming HIGHLY skilled at your craft. Keep in mind that if you get your skill to 100, Legendary, you have the potential, skill-wise (note - SKILL is not the same as ABILITY (granted by PERKS)), to know everything there is to know about that skill, and, if you dedicate perk points, maximum abilities as well.

Note that, the way the system works is - in this example I will use destruction magic - if you get your destruction skill to 25 you have access to the 'Apprentice Destruction' perk which allows you to cast Apprentice Destruction Spells for half magica.

I find that the common interpretation is that once you hit 25 "You are an Apprentice" level skill. I see it differently and, this may be more realistic.

To me, once you hit level 25 skill, you are ADEPT - and, therefore, IF you want to, you can cast Adept spells for full cost AND you can perk 'Apprentice Destruction' to cast Apprentice spells at half.

So, at 15 you are an Apprentice, and can buy apprentice spells, and can get the Novice Destruction perk (there is no skill requirement for this) to cast Novice spells for half magica, and Apprentice spells for full cost.

Adept - 25, Expert - 50, Master - 75, Legendary - 100

In other words, you must be Qualification Level N to cast 'N-1' level spells for half magica (assuming you take the perk).

So - my point was - once your crafting skill gets over 50, in theory, you should be able to craft better things than you find, generally. You are, in fact, an expert.

The extended point is, if you SPAM your skill up by uselessly casting, you will become highly skilled without the game experience, and, it will FEEL like you are very OP without feeling like you really earned it. So, my advice is, don't spam skills!! You will have more fun, and, it will make the game have more meaning.

Edit: MORE

Role-playing essentially means "Doing things you don't HAVE to do, in order to enjoy the experience more." This game is very well-designed to enhance your experience, IF you want to do things you don't HAVE to do.

For example... You can walk up to a trainer and hand them X amount of gold and instantly go up a skill point. OR - [role play] You can follow them around, see who they talk to, try to use and contemplate the skill, go to their home, read their books on their shelves, spend 'a day' (or however much time you can tolerate) with them, THEN hand them the money. If you want multiple points you can role-play that you spend more time, or something.

I am certain that the practical part of you assumes the former is better. But - Skyrim has detailed NPCs and the latter is an option, and, it might actually be fun. Try it a few times, and, if it just seems too boring, then, there you go.

Why are the towns and cities of Skyrim small?

Posted: 02 Mar 2018 03:47 AM PST

They contain no more than 10-15 structures and the sizes of the cities are small too (Riften, Windhelm)
