/r/Civ Weekly Questions Thread - December 27, 2017

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 02:10 AM PST

Greetings r/Civ.

Welcome to the Weekly Questions thread. Got any questions you've been keeping in your chest? Need some advice from more seasoned players? Conversely, do you have in-game knowledge that might help your peers out? Then come and post in this thread. Don't be afraid to ask. Post it here no matter how silly sounding it gets.

To help avoid confusion, please state for which game you are playing.

In addition to the above, we have a few other ground rules to keep in mind when posting in this thread:

  • Be polite as much as possible. Don't be rude or vulgar to anyone.
  • Keep your questions related to the Civilization series.
  • The thread should not be used to organize multiplayer games or groups.

Finally, if you wish to read the previous Weekly Questions threads, you can now view them here.

When all the restarting pays off V2.0

Wait why is Chandragupta's capital called Patna, when Cleopatra's capital is called Ra-kedet?

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 08:01 AM PST

This makes no sense at all. They use the native Kemetic name for Egypt's capital instead of Alexandria but now they use the modern form of Patna for Chandragupta's capital? Why would they do this? The actual name was Pataliputra then, this is somewhat annoying as there is absolutely no consistency in this. They mix native names with modern ones or exonyms and it's very confusing. Could they stick with one policy?

This has also happened with other civs and it slightly irritates me.

Flashback: Civilization IV: Rhyes and Fall

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 06:23 PM PST

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhye's_and_Fall_of_Civilization

I'm assuming, like me, you remember this from IV:BTS and don't exactly remember how it worked, or that you jumped on this wonderful franchise V or later. So I thought I'd put together a wikipedia tl;dr of the mechanics of the mod contained therein: Rhyes and Fall of Civilization. I feel like the interest in this will be here because, duh, the new expansion has pretty much the same name and, as you'll see, is also going in the same direction as this mod in interesting ways.

If you are such a busy person that you can't take the time to read the wikipedia page, read below. I havent fired up a game of IV since grade school, so it's literally a tl;dr of the wikipedia page.

_

Rhyes and Fall was a mod released with the final expansion of Civilization IV, Beyond the Sword. At its heart, it was an attempt at recreating our history on Earth, in a game of Civ, as accurately as possible. In doing so, it made an already deliciously complicated rendition of this franchise that much more so.

Aside from the usual humdrum of civilization management, players now had to deal with one the main features of Rhyes and Fall

the game's ability to monitor the stability of national governments, taking into account war, disease, corruption, invasion, and other factors which might influence the fall of a nation.

Sounds a lot like the loyalty mechanic being instituted in Rise and Fall. Will be interesting to see exactly what factors contribute to this and how they might mirror this old mod.

Some more interesting possibilities come up as well, especially when you consider that VI has, perhaps, the most robust cultural sandbox so far.

After one civilization has discovered nationalism, ancient or collapsed civilizations may respawn, either in independent lands or in lands belonging to relatively unstable civilizations. For example, in the nineteenth century the Greek civilization may declare its independence from an occupying power, which is usually the Ottoman Empire.

Once three civilizations discover the "Nationalism" technology, World Congresses will occur once every 25 turns. Major nations are invited to participate. Each civilization has the opportunity to choose from a list of cities which they would like to occupy; the others then vote yes, no or abstain. For the city to change control, there must simply be more "yes" than "no" votes, and the change takes place instantaneously. If a city controlled by a human is voted to be handed over, the player can either comply or refuse the decision; refusing may mean war with nations who voted "yes." World Congresses end once the United Nations has been built.

Imagine a world congress where a conquered civ tries to reassert it's independence with help from the united nations. The conqueror would either have to comply or face a joint war of liberation against the world. I mean, when you consider the uniquely visible Warmongering and diplomatic mechanics in VI, there is definitely room here from some really interesting gameplay.

If you take on the war of liberation, perhaps you get a huge diplomacy bonus? Think US after WWII having liberated France and Italy, and holding a GIANT IOU from the good old UK (which people aware of War Plan Red would know was a target not too long before they became our greatest ally.)

Hope to see some discussion and similar speculation here...probably get downvoted cause I suck at posting here but here's to persistence!

Please can we have some more non-faith based Civs?

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 07:23 AM PST

It seems like every new civ has some twist on faith generation / religion. It would be nice to have some science/culture/production variants.

Personally I find religion the least interesting system in Civ 6 and only use it for great people and belief bonuses.

Chandragupta is a good alt leader, but are there any other civs that really need another leader?

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 08:29 AM PST

I think Rome needed one as it is very bland, just having all out war, for a civilisation that gave so much to the world.

Am I the only person who doesn't like CQUI??

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 11:36 AM PST

I can't understand how this mod is so popular. It adds sooo much lag to my games - lag between turns, lag when clicking stuff... and I have a beefy rig. It also adds a ton of and the production queue is very poorly implemented. But I see everyone here worship this as like the only mod worth having.

When restarting doesn't pay off

Anyone else feels like Chandragupta's ability is really similar to Cyrus' ?

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 07:10 PM PST

Both abilities grant bonuses during the first 10 turns of wars you declare and both include a part which decreases warmonger penalites, only difference is Chandragupta gains an additional attack bonus and can declare war of territorial expansion early instead of reducing warmonger penalties in surprise attacks.

Remove/Increase District's Range from 3 Tiles?

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 06:40 PM PST

I'm hoping someone can help me. I bought Civ 6 at launch to use it the same way I've primarily used Civilization 5 - to make maps, commonly for use in DnD games. The fact that a legitimate world builder still hasn't been released is one thing, I can work around that and use Firetuner to essentially do the same thing... but I'm still limited by in-game restrictions, like I can only place districts (like the Commerce Hub) within three tiles of a city.

Is there a mod, or a way to alter the game files, to alleviate this restriction or set it to a value like 100 so it is negligible? Ideally, I'd like to be able to take the art asset for something like the Commercial Hub and duplicate it as an improvement (like a Roman Fort) and just drop that where I please with the same restrictions as other improvements, which seem to be far more lenient, but every time I try to access Modbuddy, it says it needs to install Virtual Studio 2013 Isolated Shell, which just says I need to restart my computer before it can continue and restarting my computer does absolutely nothing. I'd like to believe since I have no desire to edit any values and just copy, paste, rename, it wouldn't require a full out mod.

Please send help.

Civ 6 FPS drop and game uninstalled itself!?

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 06:13 PM PST

So, yesterday I was playing a Civ 6 game, it was an already started game I continued, worked perfectly. Steady 60 fps, no issues.

Today I got back from work and decided to continue with my game, only to find out when I ran the game that it dropped to 8-13 FPS and couldn't get up. No setting was changed, everything was the same as I left it. I tried closing the game but it made my entire computer crash, leaving me with no choice but to hard reset my PC. Once I open it again I find that I have no longer the game installed, and opening the direct access icon to prompt me with the usual Steam install window.

What happened? Did someone else have this issue before?

Buy or Hold on DLC Leaders?

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 09:54 AM PST

I've got some Steam spacebucks burning a hole in my wallet after the holidays. I already pre-ordered Rise and Fall, and I'm considering pulling the trigger on the DLC leaders. I only have Australia right now.

Is it wise to snap up a few now, or do we see a bundle around R&F?

What Modded Leaders are you using in Civ VI?

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 02:09 PM PST

Hey guys. Was looking through the mods for Civ VI, and there's starting to be quite a few leaders in there! With that in mind, I was looking for some feedback on the one's you guys like, and which ones you don't.

My main concern is geography on TSL Earth maps (looking to fill in North/South America and Africa), and overall balance of the civ with the initial leaders. It's all fun and games until you boot up a game at higher difficulty only to find that the modded leaders you added are just waaaaaaay better than you are.

Looking for a post

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 10:11 AM PST

Ok, so this has been making me crazy. I saw a picture someone made here, that was hilarious. Basically it's pointing out how aggressive some civs are with spreading and making cities, and features the user turning from a happy face to more and more of a frown. It was stick figure drawing. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I think it got gold gifted.
