/r/Civ Free Talk Friday - March 30, 2018

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:14 AM PDT

Greetings r/Civ.

Hello and welcome to Free Talk Friday, a megathread where everyone can rant, vent, or otherwise express themselves to their heart's content. This is also a place where you can organize your thoughts, or even a party for multiplayer games if you so wish to.

Despite the mostly free of expression, however, we would like to ask you to still follow the rules, mainly:

  • Be polite as much as possible. Don't be rude or vulgar to anyone.
  • Keep your comments civil and as respectful as you can. If you cannot say anything good, please hide and ignore the comment.
  • Memes are allowed in the thread, but Politics and other controversial topics are not permitted to prevent offending certain people.

For other Weekly/Monthly threads, you can now view them here.

There is currently a bug with running the Rise & Fall Expansion with the existing DLC which in some cases makes it impossible to start a game. A more detailed explanation of this bug can be found in this post.

As a temporary fix until we can get an official patch, you can download either this unofficial patch by Deliverator23, or with this patch by Gedemon.

FUCK YOU HOJO

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:37 AM PDT

Playing as Korea when an emergency popped-up and it said to take one of Spanish city and the other member that invited were Japan, Aztec, and Arab. Most of Spanish cities are on the coast and i have strong navies so why not i join it.

Turns out the mission is to capture Tokyo from Spain and i'm THE ONLY one who join the emergency. WHAT THE FUCK IS HOJO DOING???? He doesn't join a war to retake his city????

But meh, it will an easy capture so why not i send my troops to Tokyo. Tokyo is sandwiched between Kyoto and other Japanese city so of course i have to be on their border to go to Tokyo but guess what? Diplomacy screen popped-up and Hojo said TO REMOVE MY TROOPS from his border while i'm here voluntarily tried to liberate HIS GODDAMN CITY. And 10 turns later THIS MOTHERFUCKER DECLARES WAR ON ME. WTFFFFFF???!!!!

I'm so done with current game. I will end this game with Thermo to all Japs cities.

[MOD] Have you ever gotten lazy of doing your job? Do you decide burn down the neighboring village as a result? Then play as Javraganak, who leads the Thule Peoples in Civilization 6: Rise and Fall!

I'm trying to build a Holy Site in Kyoto. Can anyone explain to me why I am not allowed to build it in any of the tiles inside of my city's borders?

If someone makes a Sweden mod for Civ6 in the future, please take a read into Charles XII

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:42 AM PDT

I've recently taken a liking to The Great Northern War and I have to say, I'm in love with the bravery of King Charles XII. If anyone is planning a Sweden mod for Civ6 or decides to make on in the future, I highly recommend having this young king as the leader.

If you want any context for him, I recommend watching this series of videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyBPAz1H-lU&list=PLhyKYa0YJ_5D8fC4ZFD5QbIBqC8mfpR6h

He became king at age 14 and bravely led Swedish military against the forces of Russia, Denmark-Norway, Poland-Lithuania, and England. His death proved that all patriotism and love for Sweden, at the time, came from his strength.

Mix 'n' Match Leaders and Civs

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 02:28 AM PDT

Does anyone know if there's a mod that lets you pick which leader and which Civ you play as?

E.g., You could play as Qin Shi Huang (China) leading Egypt. You'd get his "The First Emperor" bonus, and Egypt's "Iteru" bonus for a Wonder heavy strategy. Or you could play as Amanitore (Nubia) leading the Aztecs for a district heavy game, ("Kandake of Meroe" and "Legend of the Five Suns")

This game made me realize I might be racist

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:52 PM PDT

I just want to preface this by letting you guys know that this has more to do with pride in heritage than outright racism. But it was an interesting self-discovery moment I had while I was on LSD and cranking out the endless hours into the game.

I noticed I had strong tendencies in every. single. game. I've owned Civ 5 since 2014:

I've only ever played my ethnicity, Korea. (I've actually never even seen the King Sejong animations)

I only played with domination and cultural victories turned on. The other victories "never felt like a real victory" to me, in the scheme of Civ and what it is.

I never, EVER open borders. While I realize I'm missing out on different strategies by doing so, it never felt right for me to open my lands to potential enemies. (Very pessimistic of me, I know..)

My land shape strategy is always similar, as well. Find myself somewhere cozy to fortify myself in, preferably with mountains to block myself from other nations. I love big island starts where I am alone and untouched. I will always strive to have as few bordering nations on my civ as possible, with cities being tight and close to one another. The Korean spirit of being a dense, hermit kingdom seems well alive in me.

While the border thing might just be common civ tactics, the victory modes are what really made me introspective on my innate racism. Other people clearly played and enjoyed the other victory conditions, yet I realized I didn't care at all for any of them besides domination and culture. Subconsciously, I had it geared in my mind that "winning" in this game is only achieved by:

1) Wiping out any and all other ethnicities 2) Converting all other groups of people to live by Korean culture and traditions

This was a funny, but in a deeper way, startling realization. It wasn't even roleplay, it was my consistently desired strategy/goal for this game in all difficulties. I was a Korean Hitler in the world of Civ.

Will sending an envoy to Yerevan cause the borders to expand outside my territory or not?

[Civ5 BNW] How come the AI can make peace right after declaring war?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:30 PM PDT

With careful reloading of saves I managed to drag the whole world (7/8 civs) into war with me. I was China and made defense pacts with 3 other civs (Morocco, Siam, America) right before Poland and Persia declared war on me. They declare war as well and I immediately renew the defense policy with all 3 of them. A turn later Greece declares war on me, my allies join in as well. 3 turns later, Siam makes peace with everyone and is no longer at war. Like 5 turns after that Morocco and America are only at war with Greece. What gives? I still have defense pacts with all 3 of my allies. I swear when an ally drags me into war I have to wait like 20 turns before sueing for peace. My allies dropped me right away. I mean Greece is the main one I'm worried about so I'm not too bothered (I'm crushing Poland and Persia is a continent away and doesn't have a navy). Still, I thought my world war would have been able to last longer. I'm really surprised at Siam. Both Siam and America are Freedom like me while Morocco is Autocracy (my enemies are all Order) and Siam once followed me into a War with Egypt which lasted how long I expected it to last. If anything I would expected Morocco to drop out since they're the closest to Greece and most likely to get clobbered but maybe they were getting sick of their neighbours.

Game Setup question

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:24 AM PDT

I play a lot of civ with my fiance and 2 best friends, and one of our biggest gripes is that the game always places us so close together. Even though we always use Huge mapsize and fill out the rest of the map with AI, it's not uncommon for us to all spawn on the same continent with MAYBE 1 AI in between us. Is there a setting somewhere that allows a "spread out" start that allows for some growth and conquering of AI before we run into each other? I can't remember a game that we started where one person wasn't directly bordering another. The last game we started a mere 8 tiles separated my capital from my fiance's... on a HUGE map.
