True Dota 2 - Ah, now I get it: Realising Heroes

Ah, now I get it: Realising Heroes

Posted: 27 Feb 2018 05:18 AM PST

Each hero in dota has been designed with a certain level of synergy in their toolkit. Disruptor for example can use Thunder Strike to provide vision so he can Glimpse back an enemy into his Kinetic Field within which he can cast Static Storm. Quite straightforward to figure out how the hero should be played.

However, what I find much more useful, is those little things that finally make you realise the hidden potential of a hero. Some examples of what I mean:

  • Oracle's False Promise stops all incoming damage. This means even Salves won't be interrupted by damage. As soon as you hit level 6 you can FP and Salve an ally for 800HP, turning around ganks easily.

  • Lifestealers Infest is not only a "suprise!" taxi-service. It will heal you for 100% of a creeps HP while dealing 150/275/400 dmg...and that damage heals if you used Open Wounds on the opponent before. And you thought Omniknight's Purification was a big HP exchange.

  • IO's Spirits last longer than the CD and when you re-cast them they explode. This means you can use Tether or Relocate to suddenly blast an opponent for 500 dmg followed up by another 500 dmg. If you combine this with the talent (+90) then its 950 dmg + 950 dmg. You're not only a healbot.

  • Earthshaker with a Blink is not just a million dollar echo slam. If you chain exactly right you can output A LOT of damage AND control. Enchant Totem from Fog -> Blink -> EchoSlam -> 400% RightClick -> ET -> 400% RightClick -> Fissure -> RightClick -> ET -> 400% RightClick. This is 860 dmg in magic nuke + echo slam damage (if any) + buffed right clicks.

These are just some examples I have discovered to really elevate my impact on these heroes. I feel like these "tricks" can be found for every hero - even something simple like Juggernaut's ability to TP out of almost any situation or Tidehunter's to clear ancient stacks.

What "eye openers" do you have for your heroes?

When is the right time to buy Faerie Fire?

Posted: 27 Feb 2018 04:10 PM PST

To start of I'm a Legend [3] player that plays around 85% of my games as core. Ever since faerie fire was introduced I haven't really bought them outside of blinding following a guides starting items.

Having watched most of the ESL Katowice I noticed players occasionally buying them over other starting items. In what situations is it worth spending starting gold on a faerie fire. If I needed health in lane I could buy tangos/salves albeit more expensive but more cost effective for healing. If I needed more attack damage for last hits/trading there's other options like quelling blade, branches and more gold towards stat items like aquila or wand. What are your guys thoughts on when to buy them?

Mathiest hero in the game?

Posted: 27 Feb 2018 06:52 AM PST

What heroes depend a lot on your ability to calculate combos or thresholds for your spells? I know a lot of playing carry us knowing how far you can push your hero. But the skill ceiling for each hero multiple components, Ie, some heroes are really hard to position correctly (drow), while others are hard mechanically (Tinker, invoker), etc. Is there a hero that has a very high mathematical skill cap?

Basically, I'm asking which hero benefits a lot from laying out a spreadsheet and calculating a bunch of scenarios. I love spreadsheets.

Should there be tiers of Aghs in price + stats depending on power?

Posted: 27 Feb 2018 02:10 PM PST

I'm collecting opinions on this one before a possible main-sub post.

Instead of buffing every Aghs to an even power-level...
The logic is that: some Aghs. scepters are not as strong as others, while it is still a delayed power-spike for particular heroes and item slot constraint.
(without resorting to giving them aghs effect for free or as talent).

Additional things to keep in mind: 5k gold on eg. Puck is not as good as 5k gold on a carry. An item slot on one hero can be worth more less than a slot on another, and there are different levels of farm rate too.

It will be at most a 2 tier Aghs. system, with a cheaper on with weaker stats for those heroes who do not have particular useful Aghs. upgrades.

Thoughts?

How to be better at offlane?

Posted: 27 Feb 2018 02:04 PM PST

Offlane is the hardest lane for me. I always die and get bullied by their supports. If i avoid and keep distance from their supports i tend to get very low farm and xp. I seriously don't know what to do. I could use some advice and tips. Thanks in advance.

What exactly is this pangolier "Gyroshell Ricochet" that can be dispelled?

Posted: 26 Feb 2018 09:05 PM PST

I was perusing the dota 2 wiki and saw that Rolling Thunder has a buff which can be dispelled (wall bumping stop buff).

What exactly is this buff which can be dispelled? And what happens if you dispel it?

Little things that seem to make a big impact

Posted: 26 Feb 2018 08:25 PM PST

  1. On medusa, getting a casual glove of haste (which builds into a maelstrom), after aquila/phase and/or after Dlance.

  2. With the change to Tangos pricing, I've found that I can get some pretty decent harass capability with some weakish lane supports by augmenting regen with faery fire (particularly Vengeful spirit)

  3. Orb of venom on tidehunter, never tried it before a few days ago, but it's fucking horrible paired with first point in gush.

  4. blightstone on CK. say what? for real. If you've hit decent timings and get your treads/armlet/echo/heart, that 300 gold item can turn a "OK we got racks, lets um, go take that T2" push, into a heartwrenching game push, where, even if you don't fully take throne (i.e. get it to 50%), the sense of panic frequently results in the opposition feeding in desperation plays leading to an easy win anyway.

  5. Vlads on vengeful spirit, I know this is a bit more costly, but I get a real kick out of a level 20 venge with vlads (30% +15% + 15% = 60% damage amp, and you can get 90% with a helm of dominator+wolf aura), passive healing with stacked auras is ridiculous.

  6. Obs and Sentry on push. I know this is probably a bit noobish, but I like to travel with a obs+sentry, even as a carry. I drop the sentry on the inside of the treeline just outside of tower range, and try to drop the obs ward on our inside flank, (for mid it's trickier) and basically just push knowing I've got at least a 3-4s window of escape, rather than that horrible feeling of uncertainty that I could be feeding and, oops, I'm dead.

  7. Maybe this isn't good play at higher level because it alerts the opposition to your itemisation, but sometimes it pays to get a cheap starting item that has early benefit (blightstone into deso on PA/weaver for example) to both remind you of your current item choice, and to accelerate your farm towards the finished item.

  8. TP scroll. Seriously. And here's something else... Maybe this isn't good practice in pro games, but if I only have one TP on me, and I use it, then immediately after the engagement, I consciously work my way over to a sideshop to repurchase, stacking/clearing camps on the way, OR, if support, immediately purchase obs/sentry/TP/regen and ferry out to utilise the man advantage for subsequent push.

Advice needed: how to change your role/hero pool, if playing even semi-decent supports still looses you the game.

Posted: 27 Feb 2018 10:38 AM PST

I prefer to play pos 3-4-5 and you usually 1st pick (pos 1/2 is heaveily contested and boring) and i play heroes who don`t need a lot of money to have huge teamfight impact (silencer/dark willow/offlane void/slardar with blink/rasta/wd/etc).

This is the list of my hero pool: https://www.opendota.com/players/104069828/rankings (dunno why have such score as treant, i did not spam him).

And i am pretty much always win the lane i am at (or at least can hold t1 tower for longest as solo offlaner).

But other lanes sometimes loose horribly, because they don`t want to buy themselves wards (mid and safe laner are horrible in this: death cost always > ward cost, so if wards can make your farm safe, i buy it on any position)/dont watch minimap (with 3 heroes walking on top of ward in their direction) and generally risk too much (being on other end of the river with pos 4 sky mage for example and pudge in other team with no vision there).

So lack good positioning and map awareness. And so on, stuff which you learn hard way by playing poor and very squishy supports.

So the question itself: what to do, if i don't want to play core(1/2) positions myself ? (I find playing "creep farming similator" very boring).

I do enjoy playing core invo (cause mashing buttons seems like you do a lot, "more active spell/item abilities = more fun for me) and I am pretty decent, but my hands hurt after 3 games on invo, so I stopped playing him.

Cause even, if you won early laning phase hard, but your pos 1/2/3 gone to farm enemy jungle with no vision and feed horribly 1-2 times, game sort of changes from offense to defense.

Maybe correct way is to change to pos 3 completely and start counter-drafting for big team fight heroes like magnus/void/tide/enigma and learn to play only them at top 1% rank for that hero ?

Rank: ancient1, I think my mmr floats around 3.6-4.2k.

Good ways to practice team fighting with a particular hero?

Posted: 26 Feb 2018 05:59 PM PST

Are there any custom games or other resources that help me practice team fighting with a particular hero? I especially need practice with mids and carries, since those are the heroes I play least.

I need to practice when to jump, whom to jump on, how far to commit, etc. Thanks to playing a fair bit, I've now developed the ability to position myself away from danger as a support to get my spells off, or position myself and wait for the right moment to initiate as an offlaner. But I die a lot as squishy cores like SF, Lina, QOP because I commit too much or jump too early without my team backing me up.

Edit: Grammar and stuff.

How to deal with a tough lane as Meepo?

Posted: 26 Feb 2018 07:34 PM PST

I have like 400 games as Meepo and I usually do really well all game, but since like 7.08ish I just always get killed a shit ton in lane especially by gankers.
