ReflectionsFor our last February tournament, we had 16 people enter for Wii U, 10 people for 3DS, and 14 for DBFZ. The ones who came out on top turned out to be DHB (Wii U), PKMudkip (3DS), and ATLCico(DBFZ). Still wondering who we are? For our big return you know we had to find an extra special guest to kick things off: Captain Jack! If you know anything about old school Melee then you already know who he is, but for those out of the loop Captain Jack used to be one of the best in the world! Well now the legend is coming back to seriously compete once again and he has his eyes set on the top. By bootcamping in America, he intends on learning about everything that he missed and putting all these newschool players in their place. We talk to him about his mentality and his goals while looking at what the community was like back in his day and currently. We also get a taste of just how good he still is by watching him face-off against Nintendude! We're super excited to see how he does in the future! We also learn more about the man himself, such as his days as a sick Mahjong player. Captain Jack isn't really into much anime, but even he knows about the legendary Akagi (which you should totally watch btw). | Posted: 27 Feb 2018 09:45 PM PST What aspects of a character contribute to thier hype factor? Why is the common consensus that captain falcon and falco are super cool whereas fox and puff are super lame? Do the people who play the characters cause them to be considered cool or is it the characters themselves? I personally think this is an interesting question b/c I've never really seen the hype behind captain falcon or falco all that much, and while I can see how one could say fox and puff (especially puff) are boring, I find it very interesting that these characters share some clear and important similarities. A comparison that I think jumps right out is puffs rest to CFs knee. If anything, rest should be much more hype to hit as it is far more risky to use, and carries even more damage and knockback. I've heard Captain falcons knee been called the "knee of justice" on streams before, why is the rest not called the "rest of the gods" or something that would imply it being super cool, as it is very similar in effect and much more dangerous. Fox and falco visually carry almost entirely similar movesets in terms of appearance, their character design is very similar as a whole. Some differences that are obvious are falcos shittier recovery (id personally say it's still pretty good due to the number of different options that he has out of it), their different lasers (falco's are really annoying and fox's are pretty annoying but not as bad) their dair (each works well with it's own character) and their shines( I know there are a bunch more things like how they're slightly different weights, fox is faster, and some of their frame data/knockback values are different, but this is what is super obvious from the perspective of a viewer) Shines seem to be what must be the deciding factor in why falco is more hype than fox, as all other aspects are pretty similar. Shines however both serve many of the same purposes (oos options, combo starter, stock ending tool, shine stalling, allows directional changes in mid air) With these "hype" characters having such clear similarities in their moves or even their entire move sets to "lame" characters, why do we consider some to be so much more fun and cool than others?
