Heroes of the Storm - If we're going to stick with this kind of matchmaking, Roles need to be split in more categories.

If we're going to stick with this kind of matchmaking, Roles need to be split in more categories.

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 02:10 PM PST

I'll say it : QM is unfun.

The way matchmaking is structured, a significant percentage of QM games are decided before we even get to the loading screen. In a lot of games, one team will have that inherent advantage based solely on the fact that matchmaking gave them a comp that makes sense.

I've looked around my match history, and I currently can't make sense of match making. I heard a lot of issues had been fixed to lead to more balance matchmaking, but I just don't see how that would be a possibility unless the previous matchmaking system was literally just a "Congrats, you won by default" screen.

Apparently, they split some of the roles (such as Tyrande and Abathur both being considered 'Support/Utility', and Varian being considered a 'Bruiser'). It seems these rules are super muddy. I've had games where one team had a traditional healer (such as Ana) but the closest thing we've had to a healer was a Tassadar (see the first example below). Or teams where Zagara and Probius are considered "Damage dealers" despite not being assassins, and are matched against more traditional assassins that can delete them without a second thought.

Samples from my last few matches :

  • Team "Sustain & Delete" : Cho'Gall, Ana, Valla and Sonya vs Team "No damage, no range, no escape" : Blaze, Alarak, Tassadar, Johanna and D.Va

  • Team "Squish" : Murky, Abathur, Probius, Lt. Morales and Raynor vs Team "Demolition Derby" : Genji, Li-Ming, Zeratul, Li Li, and Sylvanas

  • Team "Balance" : Lucio, Varian, Maiev, Blaze and Valla vs Team "Protect the Zaga- oh, fuck, she took Nydus" : Tyrande, Tassadar, Kharazim, Leoric and Zagara

  • Team "Brick Wall" : Leoric, D.Va, Varian, Greymane and Anub'Arak vs Team "Here come the tickles" : Nova, Valeera, Gazlowe, Garrosh and Stitches

Honestly, roles need a major rework. A solution would be to split the roles more traditionally, and tell us what hero goes where. I don't want to have to pretend that it was fun when my team won because it was built to win, or that I ever stood a chance when matchmaking made it almost impossible to (again, in Quick Match). And I don't want to pretend a 'bruiser' Ragnaros is the same thing as a 'bruiser' Varian, and that both of those are the same as a 'bruiser' Zarya.

AI Ana is very strong.

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 08:20 AM PST

Started a game the other day, Ana leaves after the first team fight. Enemy team is a bunch of hyper-meta nonsense (hate that in QM) and I've basically written the game off as a loss.

A few minutes go by and we're down 3 levels. Our Greymane leaves. We catch a team fight just before they get 10 and I notice that the AI Ana never missed a heal. I ping her and the Greymane.

I'm on Sonya, so I start playing aggressive as soon as we get 10. Ana is glued to me, never ever misses a heal and we start to stomp the enemy team. AI Greymane isn't bad, Qs in and hits his R to finish kills which is all I needed. Ana though... picture perfect plays all game, uses the global range shots to perfection multiple times and even lands several killing blows.

Game goes another few minutes and we end up with an easy win. Gonna start asking Ana players to DC and come back in 15 for the easy wins 😂

Wake me up again when ARAM brawl is back.

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 10:34 AM PST

Honestly, I know this gets posted a lot, but ARAM has kinda ruined me for mainstream hots. ARAM is everything I like about hots, crammed into a shorter more exciting game. I could still see playing other modes when I'm up for it, but it really gives the game something between AI and QM/UR. I'm getting old. I don't have the emotional energy to care as much as everyone else does about winning. I want to click my buttons and watch things blow up. ARAM is a great mode for me, but it has really highlighted why I just wasn't feeling QM/UR/R most of the time.

Part of what I love about hots was that it was more laid back, as it becomes less the case, I need ARAM more and more :(

Now that we have voice chat, can we please queue as Cho or Gall?

These two are my lowest level heroes because I don't have someone to play with them when I want. I don't see any reason to not implement this.

Quality of life change: If you don't have enough mana for a skill have the cooldown be greyed out.

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 10:05 AM PST

Been running into moments when I'm chasing a target with an ability that would secure the kill only to realize I don't actually have enough mana for it once it comes off cooldown. Sure, there is that I didn't look at my mana bar, but with changes to heroes that are happening, mana costs is something that's always in flux (not to mention actually remembering all the mana costs in the game). A simple change making cooldowns appear greyed out when you don't have enough mana, similar to abilities themselves, would make it easier to avoid these type of situations.

Voice chat tip: talk in third person

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:40 AM PST

"I need help!"

Sorry but I don't know who are you, you all sound the same for me, and it's so easy to miss that little icon that says who's talking (or if more than one people is talking at the same time).

It's way easier if you talk in third person. If you're Nazeebo and you need help, say "Help Nazeebo!" instead of "Help me!". Your teammates will easily identify the person who made the call and will have a faster reaction towards it.

This Hammer Brawl is Hilarious. Never Laughed so hard playing Heroes before.

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 12:47 PM PST

First the Album: https://imgur.com/a/YLgXR

I know people hate this brawl, but this is the first time we have had hammer brawl since the hammer remake (Nov 29, 2017) and nobody is giving it a chance. One of the big changes was the addition of the mine talents, specifically [[Tactical Mine Deployment]] at level 13. With the mines slowing more and there being NO cooldown on thrusters you can create easy minefields everywhere. Mines are absolutely amazing. They slow, Ignore aoe, are ignored by keeps and towers, and are ignored by monsters.

Combine it with [[Pulse Detonation Core]] at level 7 and the mines trigger 3 times. The boss spawns right at 5 mintues, but by sieging and unsieging twice and throwing down 3 mines, that is effectively 39 attacks at roughly 160 damage apiece (depending on your level when he spawns at 5 minutes). Once I got a friend on board we were dying laughing, killing people who face checked our massive mine fields and nabbing the boss within seconds.

Honestly, I think this brawl is WAY underrated. With a friend and some good coordinated gameplay our wins got faster and faster (we never lost in 7 games). BFG is good, but you start to need the Napalm for checking Brush. If people took it more seriously and really pushed the mines to the limit, I could see a whole meta developing around this brawl. Until then, it is friggin hilarious to plough through people who don't know what is going on and keep dying to mines.

Slowing down hero releases - The "Yay and Nay"

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:04 AM PST

After watching the devolper Q&A update with hots game director Alan Dabiri and lead designer Matthew Cooper, which came out few days ago, I see a lot of people are worried about the dev team slowing down the hero releases. In this post I wanna share my view on it, the yay and nay, the good and the bad.

For most of us, this is not news. The developer team has been talking about slowing new hero releases for some time now, it's as if they were preparing us for this transition all along - and rightfully so. A lot of people would argue that it is still too soon and that may be so, especially considering other MOBAs like League of Legends have 134 heroes/champs on active roster and DOTA 2 has 108. While in HoTS we currently have 76 heroes (77 considering Cho'Gall). So the natural thing to say is "go to at least a 100 before you slow down releases, if you don't hots will die lul". A major selling point for HoTS, was having a new hero every 3 to 4 weeks. It's what got a lot of people hyped for the game, seeing their favorite heroes from our beloved Blizzard universes like StarCraft, Diablo, WoW come to life was an amazing experience for all of us. But will you honestly stop playing the game just because you don't get a new hero every few weeks or so? I think not. HoTS has a lot more to offer than just new heroes.

When HoTS first came out, it was labeled as the "chill MOBA". It wasn't competetive and "good" enough to be compared to LoL or DOTA. Well, a lot has changed since 6.5/10. Our hero roster expanded from 30 to 76 (77) heroes, we got new maps, new progression system, new reward system, new vanity items, laning changes, in-game voice chat integration, we even have our own esports scene now, which is growing at a very steady pace and it has some amazing and loveable people in it. HoTS has a lot more going for it now than it used to. As opposed to other MOBAs, HoTS has shorter games, which some would argue is a bad thing, but I think it's one of its best qualities. There's a lot of frustration playing a 40 minute to 1 hour long games only to lose because someone on your team decided that this is the way to go. Losing a 15-20 minute game still sucks, but it's a lot more manageable. At least for me that's the case, but I'm sure many of you will agree. The HoTS dev team also managed to create a game where you genuinely need to work as a team (lul, kappa) in order to win. We have to level up as a unit and it's considerably harder killing other players by yourself. There is not a lot of room for people to shine as a "carry" and be that special snowflake, no, you need to work as a team to secure a kill or the objective. Which doesn't mean you cannot show your individual skill level, no, not at all. And that's what makes it so awesome. We also have a big map pool, with different objectives which all require a different approach, mindset and gameplay. I forgot how boring it is to play the same map over and over and over again. HoTS changed all of that for me, as I'm sure it did for you. Otherwise you wouldn't be here, at least not just for the new heroes.

A lot of you probably missed what Alan Dabiri said in the interview. They want to take this approach of slowing down hero releases for this year and see how it goes. Meaning this is not a permanent change. And of course it wouldn't be, Blizzard is a business first and foremost, meaning if any changes to the game affect their income, it would be reverted. So if this doesn't work out like they hope it will and people stop playing the game, you can be sure as hell they will start releasing new heroes again. But I can bet you my 60k gold that this won't be the case.

Why they should slow down hero release. Having a new hero every 3-4 weeks, means the team is on a tight schedule to get everything pushed as fast as possible (even though everything is planned months ahead, it is still incredibly stressful). And that means the content is not as polished and it is full of bugs that need to be tweaked. Think about how many heroes we had on release that were absolutely broken and imbalanced (ess of johan * cough cough *) and needed immediate tweaks. I am absolutely fine with slowing down the new heroes if it means they will have more time to polish them and add some good skins/vanity items to come along with (not just the same skin with 5 different tints, priced highly). Among other othings:

  • I would like to see them invest that extra time in some older hero reworks, that are in desparate need of that - like Raynor, Vikings, Chen - heroes who haven't been touched in a long time.
  • I would like to see them make Hanamura playable and add a WarCraft map.
  • I would like to see them fix the matchmaking and maybe finally implement the PBM (performance based matchmaking), which they have been hyping since Blizzcon, but never had the time to polish because we need Maiev and Kel'Thuzad more than we need a good MMR system.
  • I would like to see another game mode, which is more fun and engaging than the current brawls are and makes you play more than just 1-3 games for a loot box.
  • I would like to see more emphasis and improvements in Team League, which we all know needs it.
  • I would like to see a clan/guild system that is not just for vanity sake.
  • I would like to see the reporting system revamped.
  • I would like to see...

I'm sure you can think of a lot more things that should be done and need to be done.

TL;DR: Slowing down the new hero releases is absolutely fine, if it means they will use that time to fix different aspects of the game and balance it out for a better game experience.

P.S.
Oh and Blizzard, just a side note, if you do decide to release a new hero, please make it to be Fenix, the great Protoss Executor, the Praetor to the Protoss Defense Forces, Steward of the Templar, Defender of Antioch, F... I won't turn this into another meme (or will i?)

KSV role swaps. Sake to support, Kyocha to solo lane and Rich to assassin/flex.

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 02:37 PM PST

Just watched KSV vs. Miracle this weekend. Sake played Malfurion in 3 games, Kyocha was in the offlane playing Tyrael, Leo, Artanis (for BoE), and Rich was on the dmg w/ Greymane & Hanzo.

In the interview afterwards with Sake he said that Rich & Reset have great synergy as backliners and with their current hero pool and the double tank meta wither their hero pool this swap made the most sense to them. Rich and Noblesse suggested it to him.

I honestly think with this change KSV will be back to the #1 spot. They looked really clean in their games against Miracle and Sake has always played a good support when the meta was double support. He played a great Malfurion and I think he has the one of the best Medics. Everytime he runs her his grenades always get great value.

Rich ofc is the best mechanical player and I think allowing him to show off his hero pool more by not limiting him to be on offlaners will really increase their chances of winning. If they really want they can even flex him in the solo lane with his Rag or Sonya. I am looking a bit more towards the eastern clash to see BLX, KSV and Tempest duke it out.

What's your go-to Greymane build now that his Cocktail abilities were slightly nerfed?

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 11:31 AM PST

I recently watched a Grubby video where there was an amazing Greymane. It looks like they took Cocktail at 1, Stealth at 4, and Duelist at 7 - instead of Cocktail. Heroic was Go for the Throat - though I think GM's heroic choice is dependent on enemy team comp, but I could be wrong here? 13 was Disengage/Leap range, 16 was Executioner (pretty standard), and 20 was splash on Blunderbuss - is it ever worth choosing a different 20?

His playstyle was pretty cool to watch, in that he was in Worgen form 90% of the time, roaming and doing camps.

Any tips from high level Greymane players on builds and playstyle like that? He's such a rewarding character when played well.

What you guys think about a thematic event in the Nexus?

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 09:52 AM PST

So, now with the probably slow down on hero releases. To keep up with new and exciting content what you guys think about some thematic event that is not connected to real life calendar?

If I may give a suggestion, what about a Warcraft vs StarCraft event? Players could select a faction on the start of the event (maybe Azeroth and Koprulu. I think Warcraft vs StarCraft sounds weird lol) and during the event players have to complete missions weekly or monthly to earn prestige to their team and conquer parts of the Nexus for their respective factions (and earn prizes, of course). Diablo and Overwatch heroes could team up with Warcraft and StarCraft respectively.

Plus: a cinematic would be so dope, Varian vs Raynor, Kerrigan vs Arthas, Artanis vs Thrall, Zeratul vs Medivh, etc...

Any ideas?

The "nay" portion of slowing hero releases

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:00 PM PST

By now everyone has seen the front page post "Yay or nay" on hero releases.

However, if you look closely you'll see there actually is no nay portion mentioned. All paragraphs are explaining that HotS will be fine with slowed hero releases. So thats what this post is for.

The first thing we have to realize is-what drew you into HotS? And what will draw future players into it? Was it the MOBA portion? But we can get that with LoL or DotA. No, what drew you in (most likely) was the characters (as well as other things).

The ability to play as one of your favourite blizzard universe characters is what draws a potential player in. However, with slowed hero releases, this may no longer be the case. A lot of players, me included, are waiting for a specific hero to be released. Whether it be a dreadlord, a prime evil, a dragon, the list is endless. With slowed hero releases, this list not only will lengthen over time, but it will get delayed. 200 heroes now will turn to 400 heroes 2 years from now (and somehow 10 OW heroes will make it ingame in those 2 years). Blizz has to start pushing out heroes now. They can't keep waiting and pushing it off. If they delay it long enough, players will lose hope and interest in it. Playerbase will ever so slowly dwindle.

Not only just releasing heroes asap but another major point of HotS is the constant stream of new content. Heroes is part of this content. Yes, you can release battlegrounds, clans, multiple cosmetic items, but if the hero you want is not there, how willing are you to play the game?

On a side/final note, a ton of people who are 'for' slowly releasing heroes seem to think a ton of bugs will magically get fixed. Let me ask you this. Every hero or patch that has gone on the PTR has been on it for a week. On the first day usually a bug or 2 are found. How often does a fix ship to live? How often are bugs found on live after being on the PTR for a week? Usually never, even though that is what the PTR is for. Hell the hanzo bug (which I think has been present on PTR as well) has still not been fixed. If Blizz cannot/will not fix a bug that is clearly present on a testing environment, why will they magically start fixing bugs with slower hero releases? That budget/work is heading towards other content if anything, not bugs. So, as much as I would love for that to be correct, slowing hero releases won't fix bugs any faster.

There is the "nay" portion of the post.

TL;DR-Heroes is content and HotS needs a constant, steady stream of new content to keep its current playerbase and to attract new players. Also, bugs won't magically get fixed with slower hero releases.
