The Forgotten Middle Ground of the REQ System and Playerbase-Dividing DLC

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 10:11 AM PST

Recently, there has been a lot of debate around the topics of Microtransactions, the REQ system and Paid DLC. Both arguments have valid points raised, on one side of the fence the REQ system is invasive to Halo 5's reward system and results in padded out content, and uses a predatory nature to try to get users to purchase REQ packs through a long grind and Warzone weaponry. On the other side, the REQ system helped pay for free DLC, continued the support of the game with patches and content updates for a time longer than most current AAA games will ever receive, and is only optional cosmetic items outside of Warzone. I won't weigh in on this as I want to present a middle ground without it being perceived as bias.

I have seen many people suggest going back to paid DLC, and many counter arguments stating that DLC only served to divide the playerbase, and therefore has no place in a game that aims to have a longer lifespan. Paid DLC is a good solution, but this is a valid and important opposition to make towards it. However, there seems to be a forgotten solution that nobody talks about, which has already been partially implemented in one of the most recent Halo titles.

Halo Wars 2 did many things right, and many things wrong. It's a great game, but not without fault. One of it's strongest post-launch ideas though, is something Halo titles have never done: Story DLC. Were the next game to have rid of the REQ system, and in it's place introduce additional Campaign DLC in place of multiplayer content, it could provide a viable solution to monetising Halo post launch, without impacting it's multiplayer, player base or unlock system.

Releasing a 3-4 mission long DLC, perhaps similar in style to ODST following a different perspective on the main story's events would allow for asset reuse to reduce on production costs, new lore content and singleplayer/co-op missions for players to experience and a more familiar development cycle with less padded content required. More importantly, it lets players see where their money is going, judge if they value it at the price, and make the choice to purchase something that tells them up front what they will get.

Using this method has benefits outside of the financial too. It would also allow 343 more freedom to experiment with different tones & gameplay, safe in the knowledge that they can appeal to a more niche part of the audience due to other DLCs and the main fulfilling more of what people expect from a Halo game's story. One of the biggest faults of the more recent story lines and character arcs is the reliance on external media to fill in the gaps, with whole factions being barely touched upon in the main game. The greatest example of this is the Forerunners/Prometheans, who each have deep lore in books, but little of that is explored within the main campaigns.

A similar problem is characters getting introductions in books, and then the games picking up halfway through their ark. The obvious example of this is Osiris, who could all have benefited from in-game setup before their appearance as game leads. At the end of the day, Halo's core audience is gamers, and gamers want to play games! Catering to a subset audience isn't a problem, but for main plot lines the larger Halo audience should be more forefront. Expanding on characters and the universe could be done in far better using this method.

Alongside this could solve another community-based issue: lack of achievement based armours/cosmetics. Since the base game would have a proper, non-random progression of cosmetic unlocks, each DLC could contain some new armour pieces and weapon skins, perhaps based on the characters or theming of the DLC's story. With a new short campaign comes the opportunity for new achievements, and from that the opportunity to tie new cosmetics to them. armours for completing on legendary, LASO, mission specific challenges and other achievements could all reward cosmetics as incentives to play the DLCs differently and encourage multiple playthroughs.

TL;DR paid DLC has good benefits for players, but paid DLC can divide the playerbase, and therefore can reduce the game's lifespan. Introduce short paid single player DLC with some achievement-tied cosmetics for replay value. Presents good opportunities for expanding on characters and lore not in the games, and experimenting with different themes and gameplay styles.

Please discuss this idea, the future of Halo should be community focused after all. All C&C is welcome, I'd be interested to hear your feedback!

Idea for a new Halo game format

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 11:59 AM PST

Would anyone else like a Halo game, where every level is a different character from a different part of the war (any of the wars).

It would be like an anthology game.

Imagine this. One level you play as Sargent Johnson, fighting in Operation Trebuchet. Another, a lone marine on a flood infested ship. A Spartan 2, fighting against the Insurrection. A Sangheili warrior, fighting the Sanshyuum. A Forerunner during their final years again the Flood.

The list, times, battles could go on and on. We could have so many different GamePlay and levels.

I'd love to see something like that.

Fun Halo 5 Custom Game Shotball

One of those rare instances where the game is actually just as good, if not better than the trailers, and the marketing is accurate.

Any update on the MCC ranking system?

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 02:08 PM PST

With the new update coming around is it possible for them in the future add an improved ranking system? The new patch notes spoke nothing of it so I was just curious.

Is The MCC worth buying an Xbox one for?

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 11:07 AM PST

I own a PS4 but Halo is my all time favorite game series and I really want to relive the campaigns. I wouldn't buy the online feature and wouldn't use multiplayer for anything but couch co-op split screen

Idea to fix halo mcc

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 04:42 PM PST

I have thought it would be better to just have each game in a seperate executable, similar to infinite warfare and mwr. It would allow for better multiplayer and the game would be faster as it wouldn't be running 8 seperate engines

Is a Spartan II in Gen 2 armor superior to a Spartan IV in Gen 2? (LORE QUESTION)

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 12:05 PM PST

I'm really fuzzy on the whole way this works now. I know a Spartan II not in armor is vastly superior to a IV unarmed.

I think it's that a Spartan IV in gen 2 is equal to a Spartan II in the old armor (H3). So by that logic, is an SII not vastly superior to a S IV in equal armor?

Could someone clarify?
