Star Traders: Frontiers - a hidden sandbox, turn based RPG gem I've found recently.

Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:34 AM PST

I'll start by saying that you should definitely try this game, Star Traders Frontiers is a sandbox, turn based RPG, somewhat similar to Sid Meier's Pirates in some way, featuring a completely open gameplay in a procedurally generated galaxy.

The game is still in early access but the developers are putting out updates faster than I've ever seen in an early access game, and I haven't really encountered any game breaking bugs, my experience was quite smooth and bug-free in general. The developers also seem quite easy to interact, truly interacting with the community. It's quite rare really! (And trust me, I have played a lot of early access games!)

You play as a fresh "Star Trader", a captain of a ship, you start with creating a character by either choosing one of the default templates or create your own, selecting your starting profession(Merchant, Smuggler, Pirate, Spy, Bounty Hunter, and more!), select your skills and attributes, as well as your starting ship and contacts you know at the start. Then you create your map, select your faction and choose the difficulty setting...Oh the difficulty! There's quite a few difficulty settings with custom difficulty setting comming very soon!(At the time of writing this) The game can be quite brutal, especially on Hard and above as that's when permadeath becomes a thing. After you select all that, your adventure begins!

The gameplay features various possibilities, you can fly from world to world, trading goods as a merchant, you could explore wilderness, you can spy, blockade or patrol around a planet, (Which is done via a simple rng-ish, card minigame) or you could focus on the game's story although that will still be expanded as the development progresses.

The contacts that inhabit the world will give you various missions which reward money and reputation(Which is required for trade permits, ranks etc), plus can influence a conflict between the factions.

As you play, you have to remember about fueling your ship, repairing it, as well keeping your crew healthy, well-paid and on high morale, as they can leave your crew or even start a mutiny.

While flying your ship you can of course encounter other ships, which could end up with ship combat or crew combat(Crew combat works similar to Darkest Dungeon).

Your crew gains experience as you play, and as they level up you can upgrade their jobs, and select new talents. Your ship can also be upgraded with A LOT of components, or you could even buy a new ship.

No two games will be the same as thanks to the procedural generation, each time you start a new game, everything from the map itself to "Contacts" that inhabit the map will be different.

The game features quite complex simulation of various parts of the world, the factions will start conflicts, contacts will try to fulfill their own agenda (They might even assassin each other!) The game feels truly alive.

All in all, a pretty awesome game, reminds me a bit of Sid Meier's Pirates, amazing depth, a procedurally generated world that truly feels alive and excellent replayability with great developers! I most likely forgot to mention some features here but, it's a hidden gem that in my opinion deserves much more attention than it currently has, and it is easily worth the price!

I apologize for the bad writing but this is the first time I have written anything like this and I really think the game needs more attention and that's why I decided to write this, and why I also posted it in another subreddit.

It's difficult to recommend Payday 2 for Nintendo Switch. On one hand, it is the most content-complete version of Payday 2. On the other hand, it's still a five-year-old game that really hasn't aged that well and doesn't seem to have all the updates that other versions have received. One would hope this would be the most definitive version of Payday 2, but it appears that the team at Overkill still has some work to do to iron out the bugs.

God is a Geek - Mick Fraser - 8 / 10.0

When played with friends, Payday 2 is the ultimate heist game, offering tons to see, do, and unlock.

Nintendo Life - Dom Reseigh-Lincoln - 7 / 10

Payday 2's devotion to its core gameplay mantra makes it a unique way to team up with other players on Switch, but it does seal the game's mechanics in a time capsule that only serves to noticeably age it when seen through the prism of 2018.

NintendoWorldReport - Casey Gibson - 6.5 / 10.0

For those who have a dedicated group to play with online there are hours worth of fun to be had overcoming the more difficult challenges. However, If you'll need to rely on random players the fun can only go so far without any form of communication. And if playing solo is your only option, I'd highly suggest thinking twice because quite frankly playing alone is not very much fun at all.

Press Start - Shannon Grixti - 5 / 10

Payday 2 is a very competent FPS game that allows you to tackle it in just about any way imaginable. Unfortunately, when it comes to the Nintendo Switch version, the price, performance and the fact that content is lacking behind versions that have been out for years will only make it worth purchasing for gamers who are desperate for a new FPS on the go.

TheSixthAxis - Stefan L - 7 / 10

Payday 2 is definitely getting long in the tooth, but the game's appearance on Nintendo Switch is a good, solid port of the game. All of the same quirks and quibbles remain the same, there's the lingering question from how the game has been supported in the past, and there's the simple fact that we've seen all of this in higher fidelity elsewhere, but if you've got a burning desire for some co-op heisting fun on Switch, then this will scratch your itch to live outside the law.

TrustedReviews - Brett Phipps - 2 / 5 stars

Payday 2 continues to maintain a very dedicated audience, but even fans of the game are unlikely to enjoy what's being put forward for Nintendo Switch. Stripped-back visuals, poor performance and a lack of adaptation to the console results in a shoddy port at best.

Wccftech - Dave Aubrey - 6 / 10.0

Should you get Payday 2 on Switch? Well if you want an interesting multiplayer shooter and don't have access to it on other platforms, sure. Otherwise? Probably not. Maybe wait to see how things are after an update or two.
