My 3-year-old son asked me last night if I was going to play "lawnmower man." Took me a few minutes to realize that he thinks the game is all about cutting grass.

Which is/are your favourite quotes?

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 02:31 AM PST

I'll go with:

"You shouldn't have done that" I think that it was from a stone plate in MM

"Wake up Link!" Zelda - BOTW

"Hhiiyhaa!" Link - TP, SS and others

And my personal favourite:

"I'm going to ask you a favor, sleepyhead. Ever since we were kids, I'd always be the one to wake you up when you slept in. But this time, when all of this is over, will you come to wake me up?" Zelda - SS

The last one could be Linked with the one of BOTW.......which would be a really deep thing....

Link's house in BOTW

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 08:46 AM PST

While I was chilling at Link's crib while mining dragon fangs, I wondered if he (or his family) owned the house before the Calamity. Doesn't Bolton say something about the previous owner going to the castle and never returning. I know Link didn't exactly fall in battle there, but to the rest of the world, that's how it would seem. I am visually impaired so maybe I missed something about this in some other dialog.

The Legend of Zelda and "Bait and Switch" Villains, a Different Approach.

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 07:06 AM PST

A common theme in the Zelda series is plot twisting "Bait and Switch" villains; One primary antagonist is chased throughout the game, who ultimately turns out to be a puppet, or mere incarnation of the true villain. Skull Kid, Zant, etc

This ranges from predictable to floor dropping out beneath you surprising from game to game, but it's usually at least an interesting plot twist.

In that vein, I was contemplating a similar style bait and switch, and how it could create a completely different dynamic and feel for a Zelda game, before returning to the traditional narrative and progression after the twist;

You encounter Ganon early in his plans, he's still out for world Domination and still preparing evil but he's not nearly ready for Link to turn up. The fight happens, but this time there's no sages, no ancient seals, no Zelda's power yet. So what do you do? Here's another bipedal manifestation of ganondorf who's lost before he even started and nowhere to put him. So he gets put in jail, under the still living King Hyrule, Carefully watched and separated from any sources of magic. Link, meanwhile, feels... wrong. Zelda is still in the castle, her life continuing as normal, and the people wonder what all the fuss of legends and the Hero Garbed in Green was all about. This sets in motion dissent and discontent amongst the people of hyrule, who see the whole royal lineage being based around the Prophesy, the Legend of Zelda. If Zelda didn't even CONTRIBUTE to beating the dreaded Ganon, then what's the point of the royal family?

The anger broils, conflict starts, Hyrule castle is sieged and taken by the revolutionaries who come to call themselves the "Yiga". Zelda and her attendants, the mysterious shieka retreat underground.

Eventually, out of ignorance and through subtle manipulation, Ganon is freed by the Yiga. Now presented with a caste of willing, ignorant followers already at his command and hyrule castle already toppled, he immediately commences part 2 of his grand plan, and Link's true quest begins.

The idea of seeing the old School Ocarina style ganon, intelligent and carefully predictive, waiting for the right opportunity... I missed that, newer iterations have been little more than power hungry misanthropes at best and mindless destruction at worst.

It could be fun to have a simultaneous break from, and then return to tradition in a similar manner to Breath of the Wild's take on the genre.

{BOTW} I feel like the game would have benefitted from an armor that prevents slipping when it's raining...

Posted: 23 Jan 2018 08:30 PM PST

I really am loving breath of the wild, but the game would have benefitted greatly from this, even if it was a pain to get, it would have probably been worth it due to how annoying it is slipping in the rain.

Drew one of my favourite races from botw

Posted: 23 Jan 2018 03:02 PM PST

One of the great surprises in BotW is the way they handled the day and night system...

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 10:03 AM PST

More specifically, the fact that the NPCs walk off into their homes and fall asleep, and just generally go about their daily routines, is pretty amazing.

I remember, as a kid, being fascinated by the different sides to the NPCs and what they were up to at different hours. Majora's Mask took this a bit further, of course.

This is a major step forward, though, as the day and night scenes now organically flow into each other instead of being segmented (i.e., in Ocarina, time never passes while you're in a town; you have to exit and return at the right time to see the town at night).

I have only extensively played one other open world game and that's Horizon. The use of NPCs in BotW is far superior. Is BotW's approach to NPCs found in other open world games? The scripted movements throughout the day, the reactions to weather, etc.?

Majora's Mask vs Reinforced Lizal Shield

I know you can get a Majora's Mask in Breath of the Wild as DLC but the shape of the shield plus the spikes out the sides give me a real Majora's Mask feeling, almost intentional perhaps as some kind of homage before the first DLC pack released? Either way, that's probably why it's my second favorite shield in the game.

What other little things like this have you noticed that may or may not be intentional?
