Sketched up how I imagine my colony's workshop would look like

This game gets dark.

Posted: 09 Jan 2018 09:06 PM PST

Yesterday I started up a colony while hanging out with some friends. Didn't mean to take it seriously, put it on the random guy on a higher difficulty than I'm used to. Landed in the desert. I'm drinking, not paying too much attention. I build a barracks, a freezer, couple solar panels, etc.

I was doing alright. Ordered a hunt on a few camels. An escape crashes - the survivor's name is Blue. Blue happens to be the nickname of a present friend of mine. I tell him about the character and all her traits and abilities. He's suddenly invested in my play through.

Then the camels went mad. Downed my main hunter and then the other two original settlers when I tried to rescue the first casualty. At this point Blue is my only hope.

I decide to let everyone but Blue die as she recovers. I'm thinking I can build back up with just her. I imagine the colony thriving years later with the original three graves marked as a monument to those that made their existence possible.

I see Blue pulling everything together, with the stamina and resolve of Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant. Saving future refugees and them together building a town where everyone is given a chance. Where a life has value.

Blue regained consciousness and immediately beat the shit out of the dog, collapsed next to a corpse and died of disease not long after.

I love this game.

Steam is giving me 93 GB of cloud storage for RimWorld

I just had the weirdest/craziest refugee event I've ever seen, courtesy of mods

Posted: 09 Jan 2018 11:30 AM PST

Okay so a few days ago I decided to venture into the Steam Workshop and added I huge amount mods, being the person that I am who likes incredibly broad, RNG-fueled stories. It's taken a few days for me to get to game relatively stable, and I've just decided to commit to a colony.

I got raided by some kind of flagellant, which I think is related to all the Cthulhu mods, called Delilah. I downed and captured her, but then realised she had both arterial blockage and a 4/10 brain injury which my brawler somehow managed with a jade shiv. I just stripped her and released her, giving my brawler a nice looking whip.

A few days later I get a refugee, called Delilah, asking for sanctuary. The name looks familiar but I think nothing of it and accept. As soon as she appears, my archive says 'Delilah is fully healed.' Thinking that's a bit weird, I checked her stats, and realised it's literally the same pawn. Apparently I released her, she ran into a bunch of enemies and came straight back. So I have a new hat cleaner I guess.

So then the raider arrives. And holy shit if it's the scariest single pawn I've ever seen show up. He's armed with a Launcher Pistol - literally a pistol-sized RPG from Glittertech or something, and is riding on an absolutely fucking enormous 80-year-old Diplobeetle. I think it's a cross between a Diplodicus and a massive insect, and it looks like this (squirrel for scale). I tend to go with tribal starts, so I have literal sticks and stones to fight it with.

I try to take it down by run&gun, but when the guy is firing a better incendiary launcher at you, it's very risky. However he then starts meleeing the pet I forgot about, so I say fuck it and charge into melee, hoping strength of numbers is enough.

Despite the guy riding on a beetle the size of Australia, almost all of the attacks hit the rider and kill him, and the beetlesaur immediately goes passive.

10/10 would roll with baddass tribe again.

Would running a drug cartel or an art company give a stronger economy?

Anybody too invested in the characters?

I find my self always save scumming when a pawn dies because I'm to attached to let them go. Does this happen to anyone else?

Questions Before Coming Back

Posted: 10 Jan 2018 01:53 AM PST

Hello all,

So, I haven't played Rimworld since last summer (I think the new location selection had just changed from a map to seeing a whole planet). Unfortunately, even then I wasn't able to play a lot, and I usually played without mods. I'd like to pick it up again, but as I go through the subreddit, it seems like there are a lot of new features and a lot of experience-enhancing mods.

I was hoping you all could bring me up to date to the biggest changes I need to be aware of, and I was wondering if you could point me towards the direction of some "essential" mods. I'm not looking for crazy additions but rather those mods that you feel you couldn't play without.

Thanks!

Planning to remake an old (small) mod

Posted: 10 Jan 2018 01:50 AM PST

Specifially, Nandonalt's Snowy Trees

The Steam link is down now, but here's some proof it existed.

Basically, the mod made any tree on a tile with snow on it visually change to show snow on the leaves/limbs.

I have a tablet and some art experience, so I figure whipping up the textures isn't too much of a problem. However, I have no idea where to find the game textures I would need to edit, or how to code in the effect in-game.

If anyone is interested in helping a prospective modder out, it would be much appreciated.

Planetkiller scenarios produce the most thrilling Rimworld stories.

Posted: 09 Jan 2018 02:24 AM PST

Some days ago I had the most thrilling Rimworld Game.

I started a random campaign which happened to give me 15 shipcores and several jade counters as starting equipment. Also 2 Labrador Retrievers who were a great help with fighting and hauling the whole game. Also part of my random campaign: Most of my colonists were polyamorous (<3) and I only had about 3 ingame years to build the spaceship since the planet would be destroyed then. I played on an easy difficulty because I did not want to make the game too stressful, however, I enabled permadeath.

This is my base sometime at the beginning of the game.

After some time I had one death but even more people joining. One of them had severe anxiety. She droped after a conversation(?) and never left the bed again...

Building the space ship wasn't too hard, I only had to research everything except the ship core (lucky me). So no uranium problems, enough plasteel, simply by deconstructing the ship cores I did not need. Therefore I did not worry to be able to finish the game by rescuing one or two colonists. I was pretty chilled.

Then I noticed that I only had three quandrums left and did not build anything!!!

I needed components desperately, also steel and a little bit of gold. I invited trade caravans whenever I could. It happened that two trade caravans would meet in my base. What I did not know was that they were rivals and started killing each other with my pawns caught in the middle and the precious space ship nearby. These idiots. Good thing though: They dropped all their stuff which I could sell to fund the building of my space ship.

Two people were forced to make components all the time. Three people had to drill for steel.

I was thinking about who to left behind. I had too many people for one spaceship. At least they had their nice moments and used their last weeks to do what was important for them.

Then I thought... maybe there is enough time. I could try to save more people, I have so many resources! And I started building another ship structural beam. And a third one. Time was kinda running out but there was nothing to lose.

Oh, and the traders were busy killing each other again. And my pawns had to clean up everything. Sigh.

Then the time had come. My people were getting ready to enter the cryptosleep caskets. My base did grow since the starte of the game, but since I knew nothing would last due to the planetkiller, I did not waste time building a beautiful base.

I couldn't figure out how to put animals into cryptosleep caskets, therefore all of them, including the bonded ones, had to stay behind. They had plenty of food left until the big explosion. It still was a sad goodbye, since it would be forever.

All was settled, the countdown was running. The ship was leaving the doomed planet.

And nobody was left behind. I did it! I hope they find a new home somewhere on a glitterworld planet where Eagle's Anxiety can be healed.

The End.

Is it just me or is Uranium hard to find?

Posted: 10 Jan 2018 01:06 AM PST

I've read a lot of posts regarding this and it seems like such a toss up on the rarity of uranium for some people. I'm trying to build the ship, I haven't played this game in a couple years and thought it'd be cool. I settled in a temperate forest, moved to another temperate forest after 5 years. My colony is now 10 years old. For the past 5 years I've tried to find uranium. I've mined all the places in my area, nothing. I have two different tribes and two same townships within a few days reach of me that I check regularly. I wanna say in the past 3 ish years I've gotten 270 uranium from it. I call in trade caravans, bulk and exotic, from all 3 factions. No weapons made from any 3 factions. No furniture made from it either.I did deconstruct those cryosleep caskets on my base I found that got me enough to make the components, but other than that, it's slim pickins. I'm getting pretty sick of trying everything I know to get some for years and barely getting any. Is there something I'm not getting or is it bad RNG?
