Statistics for Steam games released between 2017/12/11 to 2017/12/17

Posted: 31 Dec 2017 10:46 PM PST

Happy new year everyone!

Since I don't have many better things to do with my time on New Year's Day I've put together this infographic showing some stats for games released on Steam between the 11th and 17th of December in 2017: https://imgur.com/rAkLnJR

I haven't yet checked out this week's top game They Are Billions but the stats suggest it's definitely worth looking into. Now that we're almost 3 weeks past its release date the game has seen a 3x increase in its playerbase which is pretty incredible! Average play time has also increased by about 50% or so over the same period too with the reviews almost universally positive.

Gang Beasts shows up as the top across all regions mostly because its been out for so long so the total play time for it is quite high. It didn't attract that many new players during its "release" week but it has managed to attract a few more people over the past couple weeks (mostly from streamers and YouTubers jumping on it, I think).

Any releases you played this week that you enjoyed? Anything that isn't up here that you might have expected to see? Always keen to hear your feedback!

What do you think are the best game and/or series revivals?

Posted: 31 Dec 2017 11:44 AM PST

Just when you think a game or series is dead in the water or beyond salvageable. They release another great title that re-invigorates your faith in the developers behind the game or series.

My personal nomination would be Final Fantasy XIV. It was released as quite possibly the worst big budget MMO in a decade and Square Enix changed the lead designer and painstakingly invested in reviving the game to be one of the best MMOs in the market right now. They literally redid all the maps, UI, and re-created entire gaming systems for the re-release, as well as weaving the destruction of the old world (the initial release) into the lore and backstory of the world itself. This is all in a gaming space where failures are often swept under the rug cough Mass Effect Andromeda cough.

Finding Paradise (To the Moon sequel) Discussion

Posted: 31 Dec 2017 11:21 AM PST

Finding Paradise, the second episode in the To the Moon series, released about two weeks ago. It follows the To the Moon formula of traveling through a dying person's memories in order to "grant their wish". Finding Paradise had a short prologue of sorts that released in 2014, A Bird Story. Their developer is Freebird Games, run by Kan Gao (/u/reives).

To the Moon has gotten a pretty large cult following in the six (6!!) years since its release, and while there was some limited discussion about Finding Paradise at its announcement and later release I'm curious about what everyone's thoughts about it are now.

Weekly /r/Games Discussion - What have you been playing, and what do you think of it?

Posted: 31 Dec 2017 01:09 PM PST

Please use this thread to discuss whatever you've been playing lately (old or new, any platform, AAA or indie). As usual, please don't just list the names of games as your entire post, make sure to elaborate with your thoughts on the games. Writing the names of the games in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names.

Please also make sure to use spoiler tags if you're posting anything about a game's plot that might significantly hurt the experience of others that haven't played the game yet (no matter how old or new the game is).

Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

For a subreddit devoted to this type of discussion during the rest of the week, please check out /r/WhatAreYouPlaying.
