ELEAGUE Boston 2018 | Team Pick'Em Discussion Thread | Playoffs

ELEAGUE Boston 2018: Get ready for the first major playoff bracket of 2018! A Valve funded CS:GO major tournament has reached the playoffs stage and as fans, we can participate in the major HYPE by playing a mini game on the game client itself. The game is Team Pick'Em!

Recap on what are Stickers and where you can buy them can be found in the previous Pick'Em megathreads: Group Stage and the Prelim Stage.

In the Group Stage, there were 9 choices to be made:

  • Pick one of the 2 teams you think will go undefeated during the group stage with a 3-0 record.
  • Pick one of the 2 teams you think will be eliminated without winning a game during the group stage with a 0-3 record.
  • Pick 7 other teams you think will go through to the playoffs during the group stage.

8 teams have qualified to the playoffs. How did you fare in this stage of Pick'Em? Did you get the 3-0 and 0-3 picks right? How many of the 7 teams did you pick correctly that received the "Legend Team" status?

External Websites and Apps to play Team Pick'Em

Valve has opened up an API that helps in creating external tools that help you to make picks in case you do not have access to the game client itself. If you are on a vacation, at work, traveling or at the major itself, now you don't need to open the game to make the choices. Here is an option that has been presented to the subreddit in the past week.

How to play Team Pick'Em for Playoffs

The objective for playing Team Pick'Em is to predict how the playoff bracket will work out according to you. Please keep in mind that the choices for who you think will win the quarters, semis and finals should be made *before** the quarter-finals begin on Friday and these choices will count for all the next 3 days (26th to 28th).* Yes, you have to guess who wins the quarterfinals and according to your selected teams, pick who will win the semis and who wins the finals. Pretty difficult to get gold this time, right?

Playoffs Stage Picks (example)

  • Pick the winners of 4 quarterfinal games, each correct pick is worth 12 points
  • Pick the winners from the 2 semifinal games, each correct pick is worth 10 points
  • Pick the winner of the final, the correct pick is worth 7 points.

Once again a reminder, you will only get one chance to pick how the playoff bracket will play out. All 7 picks for the playoffs must be made before the quarterfinal games begin on Friday, the 26th. Yes, you won't know who qualified for the semis or the finals but you have to guess who will proceed with your acute sense of analysis ;)

PS: The points for quarters are more than the semis and finals because as we go ahead in the stage, it would be less likely to get your pick correct, hence more points are awarded in the beginning of the stage (i.e. the quarterfinals). All these games will be BO3.

There are a total of 111 points that you can earn in these 3 phases; 9 points for the Preliminary Stage, 27 points for the Group Stage and 75 for the Playoffs Stage. At the end of the major you will earn a bronze, silver or a gold Team Pick'Em Trophy if you score 25, 50 and 75 points and above respectively.

Playoff bracket to help you make picks:

Quarterfinals Semifinals Finals Winner
FaZe Clan 0
vs Q1 Your Q1 pick 0
mousesports 0
vs SF1 Your SF1 pick 0
Natus Vincere 0
vs Q2 Your Q2 pick 0
Quantum Bellator Fire 0
vs GF Your GF Pick
G2 Esports 0
vs Q3 Your Q3 pick 0
Cloud 9 0
vs SF2 Your SF2 pick 0
SK Gaming 0
vs Q4 Your Q4 pick 0
fnatic 0

This is one example of how you have to make picks all the way till selecting the winner of the Grand Final.

You have a little more than 3 days from the beginning of this post to lock in your brackets!

Full Schedule and Discussion thread.

Some concluding Notes

Now that you know how to play these games and how the scoring system works, you can discuss what would be the wise choices to complete your playoff bracket! Go simulate the bracket, pick teams who you think will win all the way up to the finals. Here is the schedule and discussion thread for the major. Here is the blog post by Valve regarding this. Please feel free to discuss your analysis and thoughts over here. You can also ask suggestions here if you are not sure who to choose.

25 points is current 1% right now!

Cloud9 vs. G2 Prediction

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 04:29 PM PST

Cloud9 and G2 are facing each other in the third quarterfinal of ELEAGUE Boston major.

Match Page

Our first objective is to find the map pools of these two teams.

Cloud9 Bans

Map # Banned
Nuke 8
Cobble 5
Inferno 4
Overpass 3
Cache 2
Mirage 2
Train 0

G2 Bans

Map # Banned
Mirage 6
Train 6
Cobble 2
Inferno 2
Overpass 2
Cache 0
Nuke 0

First Ban G2 is the higher seed, so they will have the first ban. At the major so far, their most commonly banned maps are Train and Mirage. Since the beginning of 2017, those two maps were their least played maps. They had a 71.4% win rate on Mirage, while only a 16.7% win rate on Train. Cloud9 also has a very good win rate on Train, playing it 29 times and championing a 62.1% win rate. Train will most likely be G2's first ban.

Second Ban So far, Cloud9 has banned Nuke and Cobble the most. Nuke has only been played 2 times in the past year by the American team, while Cobble has been battled on 21 times. These two maps are also very good for G2, having over a 70% win rate on each map. Since Cloud9 does not play Nuke very often, it is likely that we will see it banned in this match.

First Pick G2 will now get to pick the first map of the series. C9 and G2 actually faced each other in the first round of the top 16. The french man came out on top with a 16-8 win on Cache. Cloud9 is decent on Cache with a 55.6% win rating, but G2 is slightly better with a 62.5% win rating.

Second Pick One of Cloud9's most famous maps is Mirage. They have played it 31 times with a 64.5% win rating. G2 has only played it 7 times, although they have a 71.4% win rating. Along with that, Mirage is tied for G2's most banned maps at the major. They have banned it in every single map they have played. It should be an easy choice for Cloud9 to take.

Third Ban There are 3 maps left in the pool: Cobble, Overpass, and Inferno. Out of those 3, they are very good on Cobble (75% win rate) and Inferno (62.5% win rate) while they are significantly worse on Overpass (50% win rate), and even going to OT with Vega Squadron on it. Even though they are pretty decent on all of these maps, Overpass is the most logical ban.

Fourth Ban Now, there are 2 maps left in the pool: Cobble and Inferno. Cloud9 is OK on these maps, but noticeably worse on Cobble (47.6% win rate) than on Inferno (55.6% win rate). Also, G2 have an amazing conversion rate on Cobble (75%), so it would be best for Cloud9 to avoid that map. Cloud9 is pretty good on Inferno, which is why they should ban Cobble, which will leave Inferno as the last map standing.

Map Veto:

  1. G2 bans Train

  2. C9 bans Nuke

  3. G2 picks Cache - Map 1

  4. C9 picks Mirage - Map 2

  5. G2 bans Overpass

  6. C9 bans Cobble

  7. Inferno is left over - Map 3

Map 1 - Cache

Cloud9 win rate: 50% - Played 18 times

G2 win rate: 66.7% - Played 18 times

C9 H2H win rate: 25%

G2 H2H win rate: 75%

G2 Wins!!!

Map 2 - Mirage

Cloud9 win rate: 64.5% - Played 31 times

G2 win rate: 71.4% - Played 7 times

C9 H2H win rate: N/A

G2 H2H win rate: N/A

Cloud9 Wins!!!

Map 3 - Inferno

Cloud9 win rate: 55.6% - Played 18 times

G2 win rate: 62.5% - Played 24 times

C9 H2H win rate: 100%

G2 H2H win rate: 0%

Cloud9 Wins!!!

TLDR

Cloud9 wins 2-1 (winning Mirage and Inferno)

I changed the veto midway through the article, changing the first map from Inferno to Cache. Thanks for the read

thoughts???
