THE LARGEST FIGHTING GAME COMMUNITY ON DISCORD

https://discord.gg/NewChallenger
New Challenger is a PS4/PC based casual fighting game group made by new players, for new players. The group is comprised of people that range from "I know how to throw a fireball!" to seasoned veterans looking to help out the new guys, and everything in between. Our goal is to help the newer people grow, learn the game and LEVEL UP!

COACHING

We teach YOU how to play and level up!!
The NCH has high level coaches ready to answer any SFV question you may have! They also volenteer their time to host random 1on1 and group Coaching Nights throughout the week. The purpose of these events are to help people to better understand the basic fundamentals, combos, tech, etc of the game.

TOURNAMENTS

Skill capped tournaments 0-7499 are held bi-weekly for both NA and EU! It's an opportunity for Bronze, Silver and Gold players to get the same tournament thrill higher ranked players get.

FIGHT NIGHTS

We are a VERY active Discord and someone ALWAYS has a lounge open. We hold regular evening Fight Nights for EU and NA! Fight Nights are an opportunity for Bronze, Silver, Gold players to get together with other members of NCH community in a lounge to play SFV and have some fun. They happen every night of the week and feature different organizers who set their own rules, although we strongly encourage a "3 win then you drop to the bottom" rule.

I'M NOT A BRONZE OR SILVER, CAN I STILL PLAY?
Of course you can!

One of the reasons New Challenger is so successful, is because of people like you who join events and give back to the community by helping other players improve! Fight Nights are a great time for new players to ask more experienced players for help or watch some great matches.

Zangief newbie questions

Posted: 26 Dec 2017 08:13 AM PST

Hey folks, I'm long time reader of this Reddit, this is my first fighting game, Zangief is my 2nd main, previously I played Ed, until I got into Silver, then decided to switch, because I feel Zangief do more damage and better on punishing. So I have plenty of questions:

1) What to do with Nash, Karin - they both seem to jump on me from the safe distance, and I can't punish them afterward (they end up out of range of my heavy leg kick) if I try to show aggression - I'm eating a lot of dmg.

2) Cammy - simply impossible to punish, she just jumps from all the side and Lariat doing no dmg to her.

3) What to do when people do cross-up? (I'm trying Lariat with like 50% of success, skilled guys won't be hit by it)

4) Why armored bear grab can be prevented by simple hits, shurukens etc. isn't armor should give me the opportunity to grab someone?

5) Armored SPD seems useless as any DMG prevents you from grabbing people.

6) What to do against guarding people - like Guile, they'll sit in a corner spamming projectiles - if you jump in you get dmg, lose-lose situation tbh.

7) Headbutt vs shuruken - sometimes I'm able to hit, sometimes I'm getting hit by it - should I do it at all against a downed opponent?

8) I'm super bad at punishing neutral jump near me when I'm downed... What is the best punish?

9) Last Trial Vol 2 - after Headbutt and crunched punch opponent is too far away for CA, managed to do all the sequence but grab never work as it is too far.

10) Looks like SPD not working after any hit, so I can't do it as a combo finisher, right? (except V-Skill, when I can do armored grab in the air afterward)

11) Ken's running towards me canceling it into grab - what's the best answer/punish? Getting caught by it a lot.

What changes DON'T you want to see in Season 3?

Posted: 26 Dec 2017 05:34 AM PST

What proposed balance changes - whether they've been noticed in early versions of AE, or just been suggested somewhere in the community - do you definitely NOT want to see when AE rolls out?

[SFV] I can use Fight Money to unlock content?

Posted: 26 Dec 2017 07:38 AM PST

I heard about those Fight Money in SFV, I have played the game offline at a friend's house (he doesn't have internet) on Survival Mode, and I also heard that I can use Fight Money to buy DLC instead of real money, which sounds nice, but there must be a catch to that. Is it true, and if so, how much grinding do I have to waste time in Survival? I suck at Survival (only got up to 4 matches), so I know this is gonna be very difficult for me since I'm buying the game now for PC.

Capcom is ahead of the time with SFV

Posted: 25 Dec 2017 05:02 PM PST

SFV came under a lot of fire for various reasons. But I think that there were a few notable design decisions that were very progressive and slick. The kind of stuff that can help fighting games become mainstream again. And some of it is stuff that people like to bash the game for. Capcom was not the first to think of these, at least not all of them, but to decide that these were the right choice for SFV took some guts and I personally believe is right for the game.

1: PC - PS4 crossplay: universally loved I believe? Amazing feature. Should be a standard in all fighting games. Highly contributes to the success of the game.

2: 3 frame buffer. Say what you will about lowering the skill cap, but personally without the 3 frame buffer, I wouldn't be here posting, I would be incapable of playing the game properly in a consistent fashion. Combos would be dropped left and right. I feel like my brain has a lot to offer in this game, I have my own twist on tactics and how to pressure people, but my brain is not good at 1 frame links. Should I be shunted from ever having any hope of being competitive?

Accessibility is essential in these modern times if you want to attract new players. Don't want to give people a little leeway for inputs? They will just go play LoL or Overwatch, and the FGC will have stunted growth.

3: long blockstun/hitstun. See above for accessibility.

4: Fight money. In this day and age a lot of players come to expect a way to grind for new characters and cosmetics. Should be standard in all fighting games at this point.

I have to point out the 1 big flaw that actually hurts accessibility, the netcode is garbage. That absolutely can and likely does turn away potential players. Especially if they are coming from mainstream online competitive games and decide to try online fighting games.

Another flaw that I see for accessibility is that some characters have light normals that chain into itself or other light normals. For some characters that makes it much more difficult to execute a tick throw. Also, command grab cancels can result in frustrating execution barriers. Trying to jab then command throw as vega is painful because if you try to buffer the command grab you can instead get a cancel that wiffs. This seems easy to fix and is definitely a barrier of entry for some characters.

What are your thoughts? Do you you think the game is accessible enough? Do you think they sacrificed too much for accessibility? Do you think they need to do more?

EDIT: As others have pointed out. The netcode, albeit flawed, is functional. If you have a good connection, you will get alot of good matches. Some of them will be a lag fest, but playing online is a worthwhile experience overall. I can tell you I have spent over 800 hours in the mode, and I concur that it is satisfactory on average, with a buzzkill lag fest occuring at some frequency. However, this is still a barrier to accessibility to have to endure the shit matches that you absolutely will get served.

Street Fighter's AI

Posted: 26 Dec 2017 05:01 AM PST

I finally started learning street fighter by playing against the CPU. So I started with sf2 world warrior. Today I switched to super turbo. But its AI was just too tough. I read on the internet that it has cheap AI. So which arcade ports of street fighter games have playable AI.

What should I be focusing on as a complete newbie?

Posted: 26 Dec 2017 01:06 AM PST

I've been wanting to get SF5 for a while and finally picked it up today with the Steam sale. I've never played fighting games before but I've played Starcraft for a while up to a decent level (Dia 2) so mechanically I feel like I'm pretty good.

So far I've completed all the character stories, spent a while in training and tried the survival a few times.

Menat and Dhalsim are the fighters that have caught my eye, Bison also looks cool. I know that both of them are probably not the easiest ones to start out with but Ryu is kind of boring to me (I did play around with him for a bit though).

I know about all the basic controls like movement, EX moves, H/M/L, highs/lows and V-trigger and I've learnt all of Dhalsim and Menat's special normals (Is that what you call them?), their EX moves and their V triggers. I've also learnt to do Dhalsim's instant air teleport consistently and managed to do the combo string up to back mP (Not consistently though). For Menat, I can consistently use her ball and learnt to cancel(?) crouching mP into m ball throw but I'm not super consistent at that yet.

My problem at the moment is whenever I go into survival with Dhalsim (Only tried him so far) I often devolve into spamming random moves (Mainly heavies which I know isn't great) when the computer closes the gap on me and I could barely execute a normal teleport at first. I'm already getting better at zoning using my mediums and escaping with teleport though, and I figure that stuff will improve with more games.

I guess I'm asking what I should do when I get jumped on and what I should be trying to improve on right now. I know about AA's and currently try to use Dhalsim's cMP, but it still allows them to get a bit closer. Should I be trying to use my fire ball to zone as well?

Thanks in advance, I'm looking forwards to being involved in the community :)

Does SF4 still have a solid playerbase?

Posted: 26 Dec 2017 07:57 AM PST

I've been playing SF5, but i feel like the roster is a bit small, and i want a bit more of a challenge, so i was thinking of re-installing USF4, but i'm worried it's gonna be difficult to find games, is the community still strong?
