My kiddo defeated Calamity Ganon

Posted: 26 Dec 2017 07:58 AM PST

My 6 year old son began watching me play BotW earlier in the year. He began to play it and soon I was losing all my playing time. It finally got to the point that I had to purchase a second copy of the game for our WiiU so he would let me play my Switch. Countless times we were playing both systems simultaneously so we could both get our Zelda fix.

Either way, he has been putting a lot of time into the game. Although he mostly runs around exploring, he has requested that I helped him with all four of the Devine beasts. I did the puzzles for him and helped progress the game but I've told him from the beginning that Calamity Ganon was all him.

Christmas morning, he decided it was time. He had me check his inventory to ensure that he was as prepared as he could be. We equipped the Master Sword, Hylian Shield, and the best bow that he had. He made it to the entrance of the castle and I could tell he was nervous. I even went as far as to check his pulse and the poor kid's heart was pounding. We had to help encourage him to enter the room where Ganon was waiting. When he finally did, his entire demeanor changed. While the cutscene was playing, his face became pale and you could tell that this battle meant the world to him.

The battle begins and my kid is into it. He stands up from his seat and he is literally jumping around the room with the WiiU tablet and he's trying every angle to hit Ganon. As he is fighting, I'm giving him pointers on what to do but it was all him. I wish I would have recorded his battle but as his Zelda-loving Dad, I was just as into the fight as he was!

He did it. All three phases of Ganon, he defeated all by himself. My now 7 year old son had finally met the big beast and defeated him. All the hype and the nerves paid off. His mom and I were so proud. I know it is just a video game but it was a huge accomplishment to him. When the credits were finished, he looked at me and asked if it was time to go find his Korok Mask. As a reward, I'll be buying a second DLC for his system so he can have the entire game.

BotW introduced my son to the world of Zelda. I love that this game is literally for all ages!

(Spoilers for Wind Waker) Does anyone else think who was the Earth and Wind sages in Wind Waker is a bit backwards?

Posted: 26 Dec 2017 04:06 AM PST

It just hit me, Medli is the Earth sage, but she's a bird. And Makar is the Wind Sage, but he's a (tiny)tree. Seems like it would be more fitting to have it the other way around.

Posted: 26 Dec 2017 08:14 AM PST

Showerthought: Is Breath of the Wild the videogame with the furthest draw distance ever?

Posted: 26 Dec 2017 09:50 AM PST

I can only think of Just Cause as competitor, which doesn't even have half the visual variety. Witcher 3 looks great, but nearly everything is covered by trees. Skyrim has a very clear fog which doesn't render the game past a certain distance. However Zelda has an incredible visual variety, you can see one end of the map from the other (if you're high enough), and you can always see things like the towers and shrines from wherever you are.
