Smite - Developer Update: Technical Improvements

Developer Update: Technical Improvements

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 01:28 PM PST

(With Blake Edwards & Chris Larson)

Hey guys, MLC St3alth here!

Gif of the Fog!

Today we'll be going over the new addition of fog to the Season 5 Conquest map as well as a few other technical improvements made to SMITE. Everything you see is still a work in progress; the team is working their butts off every day to make their vision for this map a reality. This will be our very last Season 5 sneak peak until we reveal the whole map at HRX. You guys will finally have the chance to play it yourselves on the PTS on January 17. If you're joining us at HRX, you'll be able to play it at the show next week! Without further ado, let's get rolling.

Season 4

Season 5

When SMITE was in beta we experimented with tons of features. One that didn't make it out of beta, and has remained on the top of the community request list, is Jungle Fog. We're super excited to re-implement it in Season 5.

Senior Software Engineer, Blake Edwards was kind enough to shed some light on some of the work we did to bring back this long requested feature.

To implement fog in Season 5, we utilized a combination of fog volumes and particle effects. This closely matches the gameplay design of limited vision, and also provides a more realistic, eerie look to the jungle. Looking closely, you will notice that taller objects peek out of the fog and so do other Gods when using height-based abilities. In addition, artists also have been able to carve out areas from the fog, providing more visibility around the camps.

Season 4

Season 5

This is brand new tech we created specifically for the Conquest map! The new fog makes it incredibly clear what you have vision of and what you don't.

Here's a quick message from SMITE Executive Producer, Chris Larson:

The team continues to work hard and deliver new advancements to the core technology of SMITE. We hope as you start to play Conquest in Season 5 you will discover and appreciate the small details that were put into the map. Also players that are on older gaming PC's will not be left behind on the fun because performance was at the forefront of our efforts!

I can't wait for Conquest to be played in 2018, and to share in the excitement of what I consider our greatest map produced to date. You don't have to worry that the team may decide to sit back on our achievement and take a break… No, we have already started on the next awesome SMITE map!

And there you have it! I've had a great time sitting down with everyone around the SMITE office getting all the details about the Season 5 Conquest map. I hope all of you reading this have enjoyed the time we've spent together these past couple weeks. On January 17 we will release our PTS for the new map so you will have a chance to provide us first hand feedback. We will be searching for your feedback and trying our best to improve the game around it.

But let's not get too excited about next year quite yet because we've still got things to worry about in the present: HRX. That's right! The grand finale of all things Season 4 begins in less than one week. Be sure to catch the best teams in action as they face off to see who is #1. Love you guys. See you at HRX!

AFK/Base Sitters need to have crazy punishments

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 03:16 PM PST

I know these threads pop up like once a week and it's obnoxious so I'm sorry if this annoys you. But seriously this game is becoming my biggest headache even though I love it so much.

Let's talk about my past 3 games.

Mid dies on first wave, pings the support, support leaves.

Carry gets killed trying to take purple buff at level 1 with no bhumbas. Leaves and messages me "I don't feel good so I'm leaving".

Support starts duo lane (Artemis vs izzy) and the mid overextends 2 minutes in and dies. Sits in base pinging all game.

These people should all be banned for a week from ranked. Why can't I submit video and we ban these people?

I understand that bad internet happens or the game crashes and people always use that as an excuse to not having a harsher punishment. But let's really dig into that. I've played 526 games this SPLIT of ranked conquest. I'm in college with a ton of free time. Out of those 526 games I've been kicked out and unable to return 1 time. ONCE. And that was my own fault playing in a thunderstorm. There are a lot of reasons somebody might get booted from a game, but that is why the pause button exists and gives them time to return, where in most cases they will make it back.

If you have trash internet, don't queue ranked. If you might have to leave mid match, don't queue ranked.

But right now the worst part of this game to me is the fact that people can just leave ranked games without any real consequences. There should be insane punishments from openly leaving a ranked game. If proof can be provided then they should be hit with a harsh ranked punishment. The current system is failing. Fix it.

Edit- To really clarify, I specifically mean ranked mainly.

Every Skin Concept of 2017! (+ NEW Popularity Tier List)

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 03:19 PM PST

Ever since January of 2017, I've been compiling and sharing any skin concepts I could find on Reddit or DeviantArt every month. As someone who collected skin concepts and made a few myself, I figured it would be nice to have a collected and organized place to store them for not only us community members, but for HiRez to see as well. Since this is a resource HiRez employees can see, they have a direct collection of skins and themes we like, and gods we want skins for the most. It benefits everyone!

Concept Log (Month-Month): Bomp - For if you're looking for concepts that were added each month

Concept Masterpost (God-God): Bomp - For if you're looking for all the concepts for specific gods

Popularity Tier List: Boop - Gods ranked in order of how many skin concepts they recieved. Ranking criteria in the description.

Goal for next year: I'm hoping to get more concepts from different social media platforms such as Twitter and Tumblr. The reason I haven't been collecting from them this year is because it's harder to save them for when I go into editing the Google Docs.

If you have any ideas for improvements I can do to make everything easier, cleaner or nicer in general, please let me know. I have no issue with putting in some extra work for a different format y'all would be into.

If any of the concept links aren't working or you notice anything is in the wrong place or missing (Like a concept you like that isn't on the list). This was a great year full of beautifully creative ideas and more meme skins than I've ever seen. Keep up the great work and can't wait to see what you all create in 2018!

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 02:31 PM PST

Hey guys! Since 2017 is nearly over, I've decided to make another poll like that (you can view the last year's poll here).

Simply vote for the god you enjoy the most, the one you feel is the most 'complete'! Let's find out which one is the community favorite.

This year, 9 more gods joined Smite's battlefields, as well a new pantheon was introduced.
Click here to cast your vote.

2017 Gods by Pantheon:

Celtic Japanese Chinese Hindu Roman Egyptian Norse Greek Mayan
4 Gods 2 Gods 1 God 1 God 1 God 0 Gods 0 Gods 0 Gods 0 Gods

Edit: Added Mayan to the table.

Can we get some more Clan Chests?

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 03:01 PM PST

I'm pretty sure we haven't gotten a new clan chest.. Ever. I could be wrong.. I just feel like its a forgotten feature, that nobody uses, but I personally would like some new things in it?

My experience with SAIL.. (PS4's Community attempt at league teams)

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 01:15 PM PST

So the other day I saw a post for SAIL which is being organized by some people who play PS4 and are trying to organize a "league" for PS4, where players have teams and go against other teams through the use of private matches.

I went into it not expecting anything. I got in contact with a team that was mostly looking for a Support sub, so i figured I would try out why not.. Although I main Mid, I'm very comfortable in the Support role since I mostly play Fill/Support.

So the 5 of us first did two casual Conquest matches as a warm up as we waited to scrim another team that is apart of SAIL. Both games were lost, as we were up against another 5-man that had much better rotations, plays, synergy, etc. And we played the same team both times.

So we then go on to scrim against another SAIL team. First of all, as everyone was making choices, the only choice that was being dictated was me as a Support by these people I was on a team with. I believe synergy is a team effort, everyone kind of made their own picks but everyone had a say in what I should go as Support. But it's fine, I can play any Support.

Long story short we lost both games to the team we scrimmed against, and it was very clear that some players don't understand that playing with completely new people is not easy (Half of the team never played together before). I noticed that the scrim was also not fun. It was meant to be a friendly game as people are trying to put together teams, but instead I was met with people on the opposing team laugh spamming which resulted in players on my team getting salty, and surrendering the second scrim.

So I think the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth because I don't think the people I encountered with SAIL understand that perfection is not overnight, and neither is synergy. The current clan I am in, took time before we got to where we were. And I'm sure many from my clan would be willing to sign up with me and do scrims and participate in a league-like tournament. But it's just not fun when you run into players that don't know how to properly work as a team.

First nice message I’ve ever received in this community

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 03:23 PM PST

Which god(dess) do you love working together with on your team, but at the same time hate playing against?

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 05:15 PM PST

Discordia for me.

That passive is just absolutely awesome to have in any team comp. It always helps at least one person snowball, and the power gets pretty significant at 40 physical power and 70 magical power when Discordia is level 20. Her CC is brilliant, especially her Madness which can combo into a lot of other CC abilities, which make Discordia fit into almost any team composition.

However, she is a pain in the ass to play against, to say the least. Her damage is absolutely ridiculous and spams abilities like crazy. Her madness CC is not fun to deal with and almost guarantees your death if you don't have an aegis up. Also, her apple makes you vgs spam ''I'm the greatest'' which gets old fast imo.

Child's Play Scylla type skins?

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 10:53 AM PST

Has anyone though of any ideas for skin types that would be considered child friendly in the way that you see Child's Play Scylla? Recently I thought of little rhymes that kids might say that could be clever little skins.

Examples being:

An Artemis Skin called: Okie Dokie Artechokie!

A Chiron Skin called: Of Course, My Horse!

A Hunbatz Skin called: Not So Soon Baboon!

And a pair of Sobek Skins called: See Ya Later Alligator! AND In A While Crocodile!

What do you think? Would people be interested in these more adorable style skin concepts, or are bones and death metal too standard at the moment XD

Intense game skips

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 06:11 PM PST

So I am living in a new house this semester and just built my new pc. Ryzen 5 1600 with a GTX 1080. The current internet I have is around 300 down 50 up with 11 ping. I loaded up Smite last night and every game I play in I experience really bad skipping. for example I will walk into lane and in one second be teleported further than I was the second before. This is really frustrating because even autoing a minion can become a challenge because I will move without touching my WASD keys. Or standing near a tower and the next thing I know I am under tower taking shots. Does anyone have any idea what could cause this? I did a packet loss test in the cmd propmt and it is about 2%, but is that enough to make a huge difference like this? Also some websites that say test your packet loss here usually say 100% loss or they can not receive any packets from me. Or this could all be on HiRez's end which I hope it isn't. I also have around 70-80 ping in-game.

SMITE OCE NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 05:32 AM PST

I have been living in Australia for about a year now, maybe a little over a year and this still kills me. I feel like the player base is only getting smaller and its forcing people who truly want to play smite to go to na/eu servers. I know hi- rez has a plan to help with talent and the pro league over this next season but what about trying to gain a bigger population. More advertising, set up booths at cons or somthing over here. Because having to play on 300 ping constantly is not really enjoyable. I wish we could get a more competitive scene over here so im excited to see what hi-rez brings but im also hoping they start to advertise over here and maybe get some big streamers to advertise it. I really don't know just figured I would rant about it and see if anyone had any ideas.

Is Auto Skill/Items Okay for New Players?

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 06:22 PM PST

I'm still super new at the game and I'm slowly learning about the items/how to build each god, but I wanted to know if using the auto options for both skills and items is okay to do while I simply focus on learning the other mechanics of the game and how each god's abilities work? I feel like I'll learn the intricacies of the stat and item system as I go on.

I've generally tried turning off auto-skills but sometimes leave auto-items on especially if I'm playing a god I'm really unfamiliar with.

Bonus Question: If I build a full setup in the "God Builder" section of the game, and then turn on the auto options, will the game automatically build my god around the setup I pre-set in that god builder?

Thanks so much :)

What color is Mercury's hair?

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 07:21 AM PST

So we don't see what color his hair is with his helmet on for default skins. His Kung-Fu and Boxing skins show brown hair, but his Modern Messenger and Cyborg skins show him with blonde hair. And in the god reveal, he is shown as a redhead: https://youtu.be/jj0xUlvqjlQ?t=1m21s. WHICH IS IT I AM SO CONFUSED.
