Minecraft Bi-Weekly Build Challenge #34: Winter Wonderland

LAST WEEK'S THEME: CORAL REEF

Gold

Micstro

Awesome build! One the main draws to this build was the size of it, it had a lot of great big looking things. However, I feel that was also a drawback to the build. Because it was on a big scale, many of the screenshots you took were far away and we could see the barren landscape around it. That's not a bad thing, since the real ocean is also barren (although I'm pretty sure it would be deeper around coral reefs? Don't quote me on this though, I'm by no means an ocean expert). However, one of the things I think the build really misses is scale. Love the coral and the trenches and landscapes, they are awesome. Also love the fish, they are detailed and look pretty cool. But, when you combine both, you have these massive looking fish in this tiny coral system. That really looks off for me because I think instead of blending together to make a great build, both of these aspects are fighting for the most attention. To solve this, I would day you needed to build your reef bigger because I think your fish would lose a lot of detail if you made them smaller and I wouldn't want them since they are really cool!

However, besides that small thing, everything else was wonderfully built so congrats!!

We had a tough time deciding between second and third place because they are similar builds. However, in the end we felt that this build deserved it. One thing this build did really good was the fish. It used fish that are in minecraft already and as he put in his comment used armour stands and heads to create even more fish to roam around his reef! The coral reef was well made and I'd still be proud of it however, the thing that separates this from a first place build is more of the shape and form of your coral. It's really the same everywhere. I'm not talking about the coral structures itself, it's more about the landscape it's on. It just is all about the same elevation and there's nothing really impressive about the location of your coral.

On a better note though, loved the shipwreck and the whales, very well made!

Great build!

A bit of the same idea as the second place winner except a few changes. Where he had some good coral but not as good location, I felt you were the opposite. You had a better location mostly because the coral was more chaotic and it felt more different rather than the same however, didn't really like the use of terracotta. I personally love people using terracotta and think it's a good block for this build but I think you overused it here. There so many wild colours that it's really hard to focus. Also, like first place, your fish are also pretty big compared to the rest of your build.

But, on the bright side, your ship looked really cool, even though it was above the ocean :)

Good build!

Honourable mentions

No one here this time...

Introduction

Well, these weeks were meant to see what works and what doesn't. Well, I think we can all say that maybe underwater aren't the best at the moment...

But, who cares about that this time because it's Christmas! Last year, we built Santa's workshop but this year we'll be forgetting about Santa and building something that can take on a lot of facets, a winter wonderland! What is a winter wonderland you may ask?

Well, here is the beauty of it, it's up to you to decide how your winter wonderland is built. Maybe, you'll go for a classic snowcovered forest with nice houses or perhaps a fantasy-esque setting. It's up to you, just make it wonderful! :)

What do you think Mojang should do about making all versions of Minecraft play the same with respect to technical "bugs" and inconsistencies?

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 11:18 AM PST

so ilmango posted a video about why technical minecrafters are so often neglected you can watch it here. https://youtu.be/XEnND6nPMnQ

I think this video brings up something more fundamental. At Minecon earth Mojang talked about wanting to make all the versions of minecraft consistent... but they are not, especially when it comes to technical details and "bugs" like the one ilmango pointed out with one tick pulses on pistons.

There are some others, For example, on the java edition of the game, minecarts don't work the same as on PS3/4 and bedrock editions. So on those you can use minecarts as secret storage and seats in the same way in Java. Here is a vid of what I'm talking about from Fed X Gaming https://youtu.be/R5MycONs78U.

My opinion is that Mojang should carefully research what the community has built with these "bugs" and inconsistencies and make all versions have whatever version's functionality gives players the greatest flexibility. So like go with "can" instead of "can't" . so for example make it so you "can" make a piston spit out a block with a one tick pulse. you "can" make a flying machine work, you "can" put a minecart inside a block to use it as secret storage, a chair, or secret entrance. To me the game is about creativity and I think that Mojang should not limit that.

But what do you think???
