Been a while since the megabundles with their ever gracious 20 free heroes. That was actually when I personally started getting into the game myself, and ever since its been my main game. It was a pretty encouraging reason to play the game, and now that I have a lot of IRL friends interested in joining me I would really like it if there was something similar to the old megabundle for them.

It doesn't have to be the same deal, but even something like ten classic newbie friendly heroes, at least one from every role, can go a long way in helping beginners get into the game. It's really hard and grindy to currently start the game from 0, hoping that this week's rotation is going to have something you like. Last week my friend from LoL who prefers to play mages had nothing but Kel'Thuzad to pick from, who isn't exactly newbie friendly.

Something like:

  • ETC: Fun and simple main tank

  • Jaina: Bursty Combo Mage

  • Valla: DPS with mobility

  • Lili: Healer for nubs

  • Sonya: Simple Bruiser who's also good at everything

  • Malfurion: Healer with a lot of utility

  • Raynor: DPS for nubs

  • Diablo: More aggressive tank

  • Thrall: Well rounded bruiser when Sonya is banned

  • Valeera: Hahaha no

Something along those lines would be much appreciated. I'm planning on spending a lot more time in the game with the upcoming patch, and I would like to be joined with my friends who don't have as much to look forward to with their lackluster collections

Nazeboo's Toads Animation Is Misleading

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 11:31 AM PST

I'M ONLY TALKING ABOUT THE ANIMATION!

When Naz's toads explode, they leave a very long animation of green poison on the ground. This poison animation doesn't do any damage but it LOOKS like it does! Even after 2 years of playing I still avoid this "poison" automatically.

Is it just me being stupid or does anyone else feels the same?

Hero rarities need to be looked at

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 02:53 AM PST

There are way too many 'Legendary' heroes in the game right now. Of all the pre-release heroes, only Abathur, TLV and Zeratul are in the 'Legendary' group, while there are 7 'Rare' and 37 'Epic heroes.

After launch there are 7 'Epic' heroes and 29 'Legendary' heroes. The newest hero not in the 'Legendary' group is Greymane, who was released in January of 2016. This is two full years ago.

Releasing heroes as legendary is understandable, but keeping heroes like Lt. Morales, Zaria, Gul'Dan as legendary more than a year after release is keeping new players on old and free week heroes. With a roster as big as the one we now have, having near half of them be 'Legendary' is unnecessary

EDIT: I'm not saying Blizzard should give all heroes away for free, I own all but the 3 newest. I'm just saying if I introduce someone new to the game they have a very huge grind to get a good group of HL ready heroes if they want to play anything released after launch

Dragonform Comparisons of Alexstrasza and Chromie (+Sindragosa)

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 09:50 AM PST

Lately I have been thinking about the true dragons of the Nexus, namely Alexstrasza, and Chromie, and how Chromie is not considered a real dragon, since she does not use her dragonform at all. But that is not entirely true. I compared both dragons, in both form, and in flight. I hope you guys will enjoy it.

As by now you may all know, Alexstrasza, the Aspect of Life is one of the largest dragons in the world of Warcraft. In Heroes of the Storm, she can transform into her true form with her trait: Dragonqueen. Chromie (or Chronormu) however is not a Dragon Aspect, meaning that she is not the leader of Bronze Dragonflight, so she is smaller in size and power. In game, she cannot transform into a dragon with any abilities, BUT she can with her taunt animation, and that is what I used to compare the two dragons.

In the first picture shown HERE you can see that in length they are closely similar in size, but not in girth (that may not be the correct word, but I hope you see what I'm trying to say). In this picture I tried to show their physical attributes compared to one another. In the second picture shown HERE for Alexstrasza and HERE for Chromie I tried to showcase their shadows in flight. For Alexstrasza I used one of her Heroic Abilities, Cleansing Flames, while for Chromie, I used her level 1 talent, Timewalker's Pursuit. As you can see, Alexstrasza's shadow hardly fits onto the screen whenever she swoops across the screen, while Chromie fits into the reveal circle. Of course height makes the huge difference, but these pictures show that even though they are of similar size, Alexstrasza's wingspan is a lot bigger than Chromie's.

I also added Sindragosa to the comparison as a bonus, since she was also a real dragon that was later resurrected as a frost wyrm by Arthas. You can still see, that Sindragosa is nearly the same size as Chromie in dragonform, but looks a lot smaller, since all of her flesh and muscles are gone.

Of course, all of this is only for entertainment, and serves no purpose other than enjoyment from my part, and maybe yours as well, but by this we can assume, that Deathwing is a possibility as well. As you can see HERE taken from World of Warcraft - Cataclysm, the aforementioned Deathwing is not so much larger than Alexstrasza, so it is a real possibility to fit him into the game.

Thank you for reading, and watching, and I may very well be editing this post for a lot of mistakes I made in the initial write-up, but I hope you all enjoyed this little showcase that I was interested in.

Also important to notice, that I only used examples of the Warcraft dragons, and only those that are (or were) part of the Dragonflights, so Cloud Serpents (Li Li), or mystical Japanese dragons do not count.

Why aren't more people talking about Hanzo's gem only skin?

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 01:55 PM PST

Or are people not aware that on the PTR, his Farstrider skins are gem only?

Now, this shit flew when Alexstrasza had her base skin a "master" skin and the gem only Themed skin.

But Hanzo doesn't have a "master" skin, just the Farstrider one, which won't be available for shard crafting or in loot crates.

At this point I think the spirit of 2.0 is dead.

Is Hanzo the least-hyped hero ever?

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 06:16 PM PST

I don't see much excitement on the forums or anywhere else. Seems like he's "just another Overwatch hero," and "just another assassin."

There have been heroes who ended up unpopular but had a lot of hype going in, because they were interesting or exciting, like Probius and Medivh. And there have been heroes that some people love while others hate, like Garrosh and Chromie. But it seems like Hanzo is the first hero that no one cares about at all.

With the firebat can we get some anti-mobility mechanics?

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 03:22 PM PST

Like a trait or ability that is called "Slow Burn"

Basically "the more distance someone moves since being hit with this ability they take 'X' amount of damage per 'X' distance"... something like that would be really nice since hyper mobility characters from overwatch have been rampant

Example: For every one range worth of distance an enemy hero moves, they take 200 damage. Lasts 3 seconds.

QM comps are getting...weird?

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 06:17 PM PST

I feel like they've adjusted the parameters for QM comps in the last couple patches. Am I imagining that? I got into this game: https://imgur.com/9azbTJg in 5 seconds.

I'd gladly wait 30 seconds for a little more sanity than this. I've seen games lately with things like tripple support vs 1 support. 4 assassins vs 3 specialists and so on. I feel like this didn't use to happen. Did they change something?

I Like Anti-Mobility Mechanics. Here's a Version that May Translate Well to HotS

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 10:50 AM PST

Hey everyone!

I've been reading about how some players have been having some challenging experiences vs the likes of the Genjis and Tracers and how we need more tools to deal with the mobility creep. Seeing since most of the mobility is coming from Heroes that are from the shooter genre, I believe there are some answers from other shooters that may translate well to the HotS style.

Before coming to HotS, I spent many, many hours in an online MMO named Firefall which has been basically left for dead. In a visual and play style eerily similar to Overwatch (and IMO Blizzard took a lot of inspiration from, but I digress), players had 3 basic abilities and a ultimate that they could charge up. One of the classes, the Tigerclaw, had an ultimate called Tether Field.

With Tether Field, the idea is to create a zone that you are "tethered to the center" of the zone and take minimal damage while still inside the zone. However, if you decide to escape the zone, you take heavy burst damage and are severely slowed.

Below are some less than ideal videos of how the ability works: https://youtu.be/qmNzeLluXCE?t=171

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Tz6t-gPERw

Can this translate to HotS?

IMO, I Think it can be a great addition to HotS. In an example, I'm thinking of maybe Zarya's Graviton Surge or Butcher's Slaughterhouse acting the opposite way (hero is silenced if you leave the area) as current abilities for the basis for a Tether Field ability. You can deploy an AoE zone and if it catches Heroes inside of the zone, they take very light damage. If they decide to leave the zone, either by just walking out, using an ability, or knocked out, they take heavy damage and are super slowed.

This type of ability has lots of great aspects:

  • It can counter mobile heroes who wish to escape while having minimal effects on heroes that don't need to run.

  • There is counter play: obviously Cleanse, but everyone can still use active abilities such as damage, shields and heals, Sanct (if have Tyrael), Unstoppable effects (Butcher's Charge, Leoric E and MotBK, Anub Burrow etc) and more.

  • There can be some cool synergies with a Tether ability, Falstad Gust in/out of the zone, Li Ming WoF in/out of zone, Chromie Loop in to Tether Zone, Awesome Mosh fallow up (what isn't a great follow up to Mosh, really?) etc. I just see so much playmaking potential with this type of ability.

  • Bllizzard can create different styles and effects of the same version. Examples: heroes can be silenced/stunned/rooted after exiting instead of slows, can be a "trap" ability like JR's, can be a skillshot version, Map environments (The boss on Hanamura can create a tether zone for epic confrontations!), etc. Really endless opportunities.

Overall, I think this can be a great mechanic for HotS, abilities that keep a hero in one place unhindered but are punished massively for deciding to exit. While I think Orisa's Halt! may be an option for anti-mobility, I think we need something with a little more Oomph. Tether abilities might be the answer.

What's everyone else think?

Anyone else get loot chests out of no where today?

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 07:20 PM PST

Got on to find 5 loot chests that weren't there yesterday. Is there an event for loot chests I didn't notice? I never got anything for the Summer raffle - could it be something delayed from that? I haven't been saving boxes so I have no idea, but just wondering if anyone else experienced this.

Edit: Okay I figured it out. It was Twitch Prime loot. I was confused because every other time I had to go manually claim it, but this time it was automatic.

Predicting HOTS Quick Matches Using a Neural Network

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 09:20 AM PST

Hi everyone, I wrote a pretty simple neural network designed to predict HOTS match results. As a preview, here are a few of the conclusions I left off with: - It might be possible to "game" the quickmatch matching algorithm - Stats-based embeddings may offer deeper insight into class separation and sub-classes - The HOTS MMR rating might not be as valuable as one might intuit

Here is the full blog post: https://medium.com/@CommonGibbon/predicting-hots-match-outcomes-using-neural-networks-8d656b51d715 If you're interested in trying the model for yourself, checkout my github repo:https://github.com/CommonGibbon/HOTS_QM_Predict

I'd love to hear any feedback you have to offer!

Have there been any updates on a new Arthas model?

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 04:32 PM PST

It's been a while, but has there? Like how fucking long do we need to wait and plead for an update to this Skylanders figurine? I don't want to hear this bullshit "they no like Murky update" bs, Murky's old and new models aren't extremely different. Arthas' model is worse than his WoW one, which is 7 years older than the HotS model. I haven't seen a single person say "Arthas' model is pretty great", and I've played the game since Alpha. I'm getting tired of waiting, you'd think with all the requests and begging for an Arthas model update it would of been high on their list, but it doesn't seem important.

[Suggestion] Alternate Diablo III Character Skins

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 03:44 PM PST

I've lately been thinking about how cool it'd be to get legendary skins for the Diablo III heroes that are their other gender counterpart. For example Nazeebo the Witch Doctor would get a female variant, Sonya the male variant, Valla the male and so on. I wanted the primeval skin since the Blizzard All-Stars trailer was shown at Blizzcon and we learned he was getting his original concept as the model for what would eventually be known as Heroes of the Storm. So this might just be wishful thinking of mine but it was such a delight to eventually get the primeval skin :)

Heroes.report improvements - Talent calculator and accurate later talent win rates

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 06:48 AM PST

I wanted to share a cool new feature with you guys and let you know the story behind it.

Heroes.report now has a fully functional talent calculator, thanks in large part to /u/heroesmania (more on that below). It also now has properly adjusted later level talent win rates - something no other site has done.

How it works (the short version)

As many of you know, the talent win rates on other sites do not account for unfinished builds. Later talents have inflated win rates because these win rates include matches where one team (almost always the winners if they finish a talent tier ahead) reached a given talent tier but the other team did not.

To adjust for this, you need to incorporate the win rates and matches from unfinished builds into finished builds in the proportion that they show up in finished builds. Then, the win rates reflect a build's real strength. This also helps adjust builds that are more powerful late game but weaker early game to more accurately reflect their true strength.

To build a talent calculator, you need to not only do this but also keep and send the information from every partial and complete build (from a given set of filters - mmr rank / game mode / timeframe / map). Aggregate information is not enough for a talent calculator. This is a good amount of data (as it includes talents, matches, and wins from several hundred to several thousand builds per filter combination) when you take into account the number of possible filter combinations heroes.report uses (currently 4,677,460), but can be cut down to a reasonable size (currently 20 GB of gzipped files) through partial bit packing.

A big thank you

The talent calculator was made possible by /u/heroesmania, who came up the main idea of the calculator, showed me how to compress the build data necessary into a tiny size, was the one to crack the biggest issues we faced with integrating unfinished builds into finished builds, and who donated a not-so-little amount to see it happen. It was great working with him on this, and I really appreciate the support.

The Talent Calculator

The talent calculator is pretty self explanatory, and since it is the most useful feature of the heroes page, it's at the top. You click any talent and it adjusts the total picks and win rates of talents below and above that talent tier. (Picks represent actual picks, and do not include the count from partial builds integrated into full builds. Win rates, on the other hand, use these 'shadow picks')

Like a particular talent on a hero you haven't played long? Click that talent and see which other ones fit well with it. Think a talent is garbage? See if that is true (usually it is, sometimes not) by clicking on it and seeing if there are any talents that do particularly well with it.

A word of caution: the more talents you pick the less predictive the win rates become, as the sample size drops off pretty quickly. This makes the calculator most useful for filters with lots of replays and more popular heroes (try the 30 and 90 day time frames unless the hero has recently had talent changes), and is all the more reason to go get the uploader for HOTSApi if you have not yet.

Nonetheless, this is a pretty neat calculator you can use to see tons of talent interactions in an easy to process way (instead of looking through dozens or hundreds of build lists).

Updated normal talent and talent build chart win rates

Below this and the heroes' stats graph, the normal talent win rate chart and build charts incorporate wins and matches from partial builds by default.

You can change the type of win rates at the top and it will adjust the calculator and other talent charts below. The choices are the one described above, the one that other sites use (observable talent win rates), and one that uses only complete builds (so that the inflated win rates apply to talents at all tiers, not just the final ones).

Finally, a link to the Patreon page for heroes.report. Recently, I have cut down significantly on expenses through some backend and frontend restructuring, but I am still getting less in donations than it costs to run the site's servers (one tiny frontend that is more or less a static file server + reverse proxy, as well as a more powerful backend from AWS' spot market) and am also several hundred dollars in the red from previous costs (not to mention the many thousands of hours of work on heroes.report and previously HOTSHits). If you like what I have done, please help support the site so I can feel slightly less crazy for continuing to work on it, as well as upgrade to a more powerful backend (and frontend) server when it becomes necessary.
