Why do RTS games tend to not put much stock into combat?

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 01:34 AM PST

Hi guys, I posted this over is /r/RealTimeStrategy as well, but the sub does not have much activity

I'm a big RTS fan. However, I always preferred the RTS where the main focus was the battle/microing of units. This doesn't mean I like RTT's / MOBA's because i find the base building/resource management to be a very important aspect of the genre. However, I'm not a huge fan of resource gathering taking center stage (i.e Age of Empires)

One of my favourite games is Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth 2. There are many reasons it's my favourite (LOTR, medieval setting etc) but the main reason is that the combat itself is a really fun aspect of the game.

Cavalry can charge units over, Monsters (such as trolls) physically throw soldiers to the ground when they hit them, Hero abilities make units go flying etc. It really feels immersive, and it makes it feel like a good battle as opposed to action figures hitting each other.

Starcraft 2 has a similar style, but the combat is a bit too fast for my liking (also I'm much more into swords and bows compared to sci-fi).

Company of heroes is a game with especially good combat, but the base building aspect is almost non-existant.

However, a LOT of RTS games (especially the newer ones) seem to neglect this aspect. Is it just the fact that it's too costly to develop? Or do most people not care about the feel of battle as much as I do?

What are your thoughts on the Monster Hunter World Beta?

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 12:33 PM PST

Hi all, I have played through the three offered quests with different weapons. My previous experience is the US version of Monster Hunter on the "New 3ds XL" system, just a bit past the main campaign questline. I am curious to see what brand new/ casual/ diehard Monster Hunter players feel about the beta.

Some prompts:

  • How do the weapons feel? How have they changed from the last iterations?
  • How do the monsters feel? Do you feel you are interacting with them the same way as previous iterations?
  • How do some of the newer features work, and how do they feel?
  • How has your single player experience been?
  • How does 2P-4P multiplayer feel? How has your connection been?
  • Are you sold on a console version? I might personally hold off until PC comes out to gauge whether it performs better. I guess that depends on my patience.

Which unknown or now forgotten multiplayer games/game modes do you still regularly play?

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 03:23 PM PST

I used to play BioShock 2 MP on PC for a long time, watching playerbase shrink to literally couple dozens of people. It was poorly balanced, laggy most of the time, the controls were awful and felt like they were optimized for a gamepad, the remaining small community was surprisingly toxic, but it still felt unique, mostly because of aesthetics, atmosphere and couple minor features, and I really had fun. It also had one of my favorite grenade launchers in video games and I remember being pretty good at noob tubing. Time passed, I moved on, discovered and played some really polished MP-oriented games and forgot about BioShock.

But recently I felt nostalgic, tried playing it again and it didn't feet good at all, the game being the same unpolished gem as before. This time I wasn't ready to deal with all it's shortcomings and after a couple of hours of constant frustration my nostalgia was gone and I uninstalled it for good. Guess, I got spoiled by those other games after all. Funny, the people I played with now were the same people from years ago, like about 10 of them and almost all familiar usernames, using the same loadouts, acting the same in chat. Looks like they're going nowhere and this game will always have some following. In case anyone wants to give it a try, but have troubles finding a match, here's a Steam group where you can find people to play with: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/bio2mp4fans

What are your examples of such games? What makes you play them? Also, if your game has a really small playerbase which coordinates to play together in some place, don't forget to post a link to those who would like to try it.

Statistics for Steam games released between 2017/11/20 to 2017/11/26

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 11:09 PM PST

Hey there /r/games-ers! :D

Here's an infographic I put together covering some stats for games released on Steam between the 20th and 26th: https://imgur.com/4d8trrb

Another relatively quiet week with the biggest "release" this week being Legion TD 2 hitting Early Access. The real interesting data comes from the trending section where free keys (care of the Humble Store's summer sale) got Brutal Legend and Sanctum 2 topping the charts. The content updates for Telltale's Batman game and, most surprisingly Titanquest, also earned them a spot in the top 5 trending.

Interested to see if anyone here played any of this week's releases and what you thought about them! Also keen to hear any feedback you have or if you're interested in seeing some other data.
