The Avengers Project is NOT a Multiplayer focused game; Single player focused

Posted: 03 Dec 2017 11:23 AM PST

A few months back, media outlets reported that Crystal Dynamics' Avengers game would be multiplayer focused/some type of Destiny clone. I have solid proof that that's not the case.

The recruiter for Crystal Dynamics posted this on LinkedIn a while back:

https://image.ibb.co/dEoctk/IMG_1557.jpg

Notice the Senior Producer job specifically joined with the single player campaign note in brackets, as well as 'writing focused' part next to the narrative designer/game writer job.

Also, he posted this: https://image.ibb.co/i0uH8a/IMG_1558.jpg

Recent job posting for a producer reaffirms this: https://image.ibb.co/er25OR/Avengers_Single_Player_Focused_3.png

https://app.jobvite.com/Jobvite/Job.aspx?b=nAVcqywa&o=34&j=ozep6fw2

One thing that I know people were using as an indication was this excerpt from the teaser description;

'Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come.'

Very distinct emphasis on story. It's important to remember that neither Crystal Dynamics or Eidos Montreal specialises in anything but single player adventure games of some sort.

Both studios are hiring for Network Engineers, and there's one job available at CD for Level Design for online functionality, but it's not enough for a shift to Games-as-"Services".

As for the 'universe for years to come' thing, a lot of people and publications forget that this is a multi-game, multi-year deal. Avengers is just the beginning. That universe they're referencing is likely the Marvel Games Universe (MGU). The games version of their Cinematic Universe. I thought it was kind of obvious to be honest.

I'm sure that it'll have online functionality. Horde maps, Civil War mode, 1v1, that sort of thing, but the focus is on the single player campaign as far as the evidence goes.

Yosuke Matsuda has indicated the game is playable, which isn't surprising considering they've been working on it since late 2015. I expect to see it latest at E3 next year, and a release date of May-June 2019, close enough to Avengers 4.

Statistics for Steam games released between 2017/11/13 to 2017/11/19

Posted: 03 Dec 2017 11:31 PM PST

Hey there :)

Thanks for the great reception last week! In a similar vein I've compiled the following infographic for Steam releases between the 13th and 19th of November: https://imgur.com/c5SDSOp

This week isn't as interesting as last week was unfortunately with a smattering of lesser known titles out this week (and Battlefront 2 out on Origin, although I can't track stats for that one unfortunately...). Interesting to see that the new Yu-Gi-Oh game took out the top spot globally and across all regions as well, something which doesn't happen all too often in these quieter weeks.

Another interesting data point I'd like to get some insight on, born out of last week's discussion of Hardnoid. Going through this week's trending games (I do a manual clean up of the data since there's a decent amount of noise) I noticed a few more titles that looked similar from a data point of view. Essentially they'd get massive spikes in players out of no where: no sales, no new features, nothing! The one that stuck out this week was Linea spiking up to thousands of players around the 14th/15th of November. Previous sales bumped it up to maybe a couple hundred for a day but nothing like this. I did note some people saying that it may be devs selling keys through alternate platforms but I struggled to find any selling this particular game.

Always keen to hear your thoughts on this week's games or the infographic as well. Appreciate any insights you may have! :D
