Posted: 23 Dec 2017 09:05 AM PST TL;DR: Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals. Christmas is just around the corner, and so it is only appropriate to take a look at DotA2 heroes in that festive light. In years past, I have looked at outwardly obvious Christmas characteristics (red and green or Santa-like heroes) and studied how heroes with those qualities were picked before and leading up to Christmas. To do so flew in the face of the Christmas spirit; I was actively ignoring a certain percentage of the hero pool without those qualities, thereby tarnishing the inclusive togetherness that comes with this holiday season. For that I apologize. A new year, however, gives one new opportunity. Therefore, this special Christmas analysis will include all current DotA2 heroes. Now, everyone has strong opinions about their favorite or least favorite heroes to play or play against, and since it is the season, there is no better time to quantify those feelings. To that end, this analysis seeks to define whether each individual hero would wind up on Santa's "Naughty" or "Nice" list. I initially attempted to categorize heroes using readily available online tools, but quickly ran into problems. It seems like all of the existing programs out there are poorly coded and fail to account for numerous variables. Take, for instance, the Nice-O-Meter at claus.com. Here the user is prompted for the first and last names of the person or hero to be analyzed, but the output is always the same: some degree of nice. No one ever winds up on the naughty list (whether deserved or not)—this pattern held true for multiple similar online services. Therefore, I needed to develop my own algorithm that could accurately assess a hero's true degree of naughtiness. While it is nearly impossible to come up with a perfect list of criteria that the real Santa Claus would use to make his lists, I attempted to include as many characteristics which were outwardly observable or measurable as possible. This did include hero name (as per Claus.com), but also overall hero appearance, a hero's voice lines to both itself and to other heroes, the ability of the hero to work well with others (as measured by assist rates), and to a lesser extent, a hero's propensity to participate in generally "nice" behavior (buying wards, support items etc.), versus "naughty" behavior (buying dagon level 5, jungling, etc.). My newly designed algorithm was able assess a hero for each of these qualities, and then used pre-assigned weights to calculate a percent significance for each characteristic. All scores were then combined and an overall rank of "nice" or "naughty" was assigned for each hero. For example, let's look at two cases in the table below: one each of a demonstrably nice and naughty hero.
Below, are two lists containing all nice (n=55) and naughty (n=60) heroes. Note, that while close, naughty heroes hold a slight majority. NICE: Alchemist, Anti-Mage, Beastmaster, Bounty Hunter, Brewmaster, Broodmother, Chen, Clockwerk, Crystal Maiden, Dark Seer, Dark Willow, Dragon Knight, Drow Ranger, Earth Spirit, Earthshaker, Elder Titan, Enchantress, Gyrocopter, Io, Juggernaut, Keeper of the Light, Kunkka, Legion Commander, Leshrac, Lina, Lone Druid, Luna, Magnus, Mirana, Morphling, Naga Siren, Nature's Prophet, Ogre Magi, Omniknight, Oracle, Pangolier, Phantom Lancer, Phoenix, Puck, Silencer, Skywrath Mage, Sniper, Storm Spirit, Sven, Techies, Tidehunter, Tinker, Tiny, Treant Protector, Tusk, Warlock, Weaver, Windranger, Wraith King, and Zeus NAUGHTY: Abaddon, Ancient Apparition, Arc Warden, Axe, Bane, Batrider, Bloodseeker, Bristleback, Centaur Warrunner, Chaos Knight, Clinkz, Dazzle, Death Prophet, Disruptor, Doom, Ember Spirit, Enigma, Faceless Void, Huskar, Invoker, Jakiro, Lich, Lifestealer, Lion, Lycan, Medusa, Meepo, Monkey King, Necrophos, Night Stalker, Nyx Assassin, Outworld Devourer, Phantom Assassin, Pudge, Pugna, Queen of Pain, Razor, Riki, Rubick, Sand King, Shadow Demon, Shadow Fiend, Shadow Shaman, Slardar, Slark, Spectre, Spirit Breaker, Templar Assassin, Terrorblade, Timbersaw, Troll Warlord, Underlord, Undying, Ursa, Vengeful Spirit, Venomancer, Viper, Visage, Winter Wyvern, and Witch Doctor With the naughty and nice lists made, I next sought to determine whether or not players were picking nice heroes at higher rates during this past month leading up to Christmas, compared to pick rates over the past year. To do so, I first collected total matches played by all heroes over both the past month and year from dotabuff.com, and tallied how many games nice and naughty heroes played in each time period. For example, in the past month, the 55 nice heroes played a total of 99,697,757 matches. I could then divide this by the total number of matches played by all heroes in that month (216,404,750) to determine the overall pick rate of nice heroes (46.07%). The same calculation was carried out for naughty heroes in the same month, and then was repeated for both groups using the year-to-date data. Ultimately, these data could be compared to the percentage of the total hero pool made up by each list of heroes to determine if a list was over or under-represented by picks: nice heroes (55/115) make up 47.83% of all heroes, while naughty heroes (60/115) make up 52.17% of all heroes. See summary data below:
For both month and year-to-date data, naughty heroes are over-represented in terms of overall pick rates: while they only make up 52.17% of all heroes, they were picked at rates of 53.93% and 56.17% during the month and year respectively. Does this apparent preference for naughty heroes show our player-base is not getting into that jolly Christmas spirit? No! Indeed DotA players show encouraging results when we compare rates between the two time periods. Nice heroes had a pick rate of only 43.83% during the whole year, which significantly rose (p<0.01) in the past month to 46.07%! So, while nice heroes are still under-represented in terms of overall pick rate (46.07% compared to making up 47.83% of the hero pool) they have been picked drastically more leading up to Christmas. This analysis represents the first published report of an algorithm made to assign DotA2 heroes to Santa's naughty or nice lists, and used that data to determine whether players were more likely to pick nice heroes leading up to Christmas Day. Indeed, the algorithm neatly placed heroes into one of two groups using available observations, but is far from perfect. There are obvious limitations to the methods employed here, which could drastically change depending on any individual's own naughty or nice criteria. That being said, a noteworthy trend emerged from the pick rates of this algorithm's nice heroes: while underrepresented compared to naughty heroes, nice pick rates showed encouraging upward trends in the month leading to Christmas. Feeling the hopeful Christmas cheer demonstrated by DotA2 players has lightened this analyst's heart; I hope that in 2018 we can all strive to be a little kinder, a little more accepting, and have a little more fun together. Thank you for reading, and have a wonderful and merry holiday season. [link] [comments]

I need help to get payout from sale of items in steam Workshop... Posted: 22 Dec 2017 04:28 PM PST Hello guys, I was a Dota 2 amateur Tournament admin back in time once it was really a thing. I spent lots of my time and efforts and conducted some tournaments successfully. From sale of tickets of these tournaments I made some money (although it is very less, but still...). I had to get that money out from my steam workshop account to my back account. There was no way (automatic) to get that money, so I contacted steam support via a ticket. They generically referred me to a support topic. I replied to that topic and from then onward, steam is silent. Here is a screenshot of that ticket; So, now I cant open a closed ticket because its more than 30 days old and there is no way to contact steam about it. They say they automatically make payments, but interestingly, I have not received even a single penny till now. So, I would request help from community to please tell me how to proceed ? Specially ones who work with steam workshop that how do I get a payout from my workshop account. Thanks a lot and sorry for bad English. [link] [comments]

The thing is bug reports never get deleted by the mods anyway, so if someone was reporting a bug on /r/dota2 for the first time and they see that message from AutoModerator, they might delete their post and leave the bug in game. [link] [comments]

Posted: 22 Dec 2017 10:25 PM PST Anyone remember him? He's a malaysian player from MUFC. Wasn't that successful in dota 2 but had a pretty okay career in wc3 dota. I think he died this day 3 years ago? RIP. Just asked if there are still people who remember him, feels bad nobody seems to post about it. [link] [comments]
