Destiny 2 makes Kotaku's list of biggest video game disappointments of 2017

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 11:11 AM PST

Destiny 2 is mentioned a few times throughout and has it's own section.

Destiny 2 keeps making the same mistakes as Destiny 1. From its September debut until now, Destiny 2 has managed some sort of quantum trick: it's simultaneously superior to its predecessor in a hundred obvious and subtle ways, while also repeating almost every one of the first game's launch-year failings, sometimes to the letter. It's understandable that Bungie would want to cut away the many bandage-like auxiliary systems they added to Destiny over three years. They'd want to do that in order to launch a game with a sturdier foundation, something they can build on in new and exciting ways over the years to come. It's less understandable why they would still fail to communicate with their players to the degree they have, or why the game would still hide crucial systems and calculations, forcing players to figure out for themselves that the XP system is invisibly throttling them, or a new exotic buff item isn't working as intended.

Personally speaking, I like Destiny 2. I appreciate the numerous ways Bungie has managed to improve the game over the last few weeks. Despite a rough winter, I'm still optimistic that it'll become a better and better game over the months and years to come. But it's remarkable how closely the sequel's meta-narrative has matched the narrative of the first game, up to and including the disappointing winter expansion and Bungie's continual unforced communication errors. It was exhausting the first time around, and it's incalculably more so to do it all over again.

Hidden Juggler exists. There is hard data and no need to debate it anymore.

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 09:41 AM PST

I just wanted to stop all the comments of people saying that Hidden Juggler does not exist. It's been tested and the data is below:

https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/7gjc3d/data_crowd_sourcing_hidden_juggler/

It is around a ~1:3 ratio of equipped vs unequipped weapons. So by the time you've seen 10 ammo bricks for your equipped you'll have seen 30 for your unequipped.

So it's not a full juggler but a slightly nerfed juggler which basically makes you play the same way especially in higher end bullet sponge content.

Please feel free to send more data to the OP of the other thread, more data is always good.

Edit:

I feel like I need address everyone stating their preference for/against the Hidden Juggler mechanic. I'm not stating that I am for or against the system in this post, I'm merely stating that it does exist with some numbers to back it up. This is to let people know that it does exist as a mechanic, not whether it is good or bad. It is up to you if you like it or not but please realize that it is there.

Calling it now: When SRL comes around, trick sparrows will be behind eververse paywall

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 10:20 AM PST

in D1, bungie introduced trick sparrows. they were so popular and with community feedback, they created an entire event sparrow racing league. D2 released without trick sparrows, monetize plan ensues. when srl comes around i'm 100% confident there will be srl engrams with all srl themed stuff that will not be available through progression of 'vanilla engrams.' essentially, we will be left the the decision to either pay for trick sparrows, that were free in D1. just another example of how bungie see things that were fun from D1 and montetizing that crap out of it. you may get a trick sparrow from you first free srl engram, carrot on a stick, or you'll have to open your wallet.

on a serious note, there is potential that bungie hears our feedback and allows players to earn trick sparrows through playing the game. srl record book? win/participate in so many races get rewarded with trick sparrow? but i have zero faith in bungie/activision moving forward.

this is pure speculation and i hope i am proven wrong. but none bungie's decisions have led to believe any other scenario.

edit: this is also an example of how 'pay to win' features are creeping into destiny. people have been pointing out that ghosts do have some impact on gameplay, and all ghosts are in eververse. this pertains to the trick sparrows as well. assuming the features are the same as they were in D1, landing a 'trick' on a trick sparrow would refill the ability use to dodge left/right on your sparrow. this can mean the difference in an srl match. bungie has shown in the past that they place objects in the way at important choke points in a race and having your dodge ability available can be the difference from placing 1st to last. edit: you can preform trick on d-pad and it will refill dodge ability, regardless of landing flips or not.

edit 2: you can do x-game like tricks on any sparrow in d1 and d2 by using the d-pad on controller, default setting on pc arrows keys, while airborne. i am talking about the sparrows from d1 that preformed flips and barrel rolls.

edit 3: wow front page! i hope bungie can see this post and consider changing their strategy with live events like SRL and all content moving forward. we all love destiny and just want it to be better.

The current weapon slot system is shallow and pointless

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 07:48 AM PST

As someone who never played Destiny 1, I want to talk about weapon slot system in Destiny 2 without comparing it to the one that Destiny 1 had. Most of the complains that I read about it talk about how it's worse than Destiny 1 system, but I feel like it's really bad even on its own.

The main issue for me is just how shallow Energy weapons really are. Energy weapons are basically the elemental weapons that many games have, except unlike in most games, where there is some significant difference between elemental and non-elemental weapons, Destiny 2 has none of that.

Energy weapons mainly come into play when there's a shielded enemy, and you use them to destroy their shields. After the shield is down, Kinetic weapons will deal more damage. Energy weapons also come into play when you need to have a specific element(like with Nezarec's Sin).

And that's about it. Energy weapons are basically Kinetic weapons for all intents and purposes, they just deal less damage and can take down shields. But they aren't distinct enough to occupy and entire weapon slot.

And while there are Energy weapons like Uriel's Gift that see a lot of use, they aren't used because they are Energy weapons. They could become Kinetic and not much would really change.

So I feel like Energy weapons need to either be combined in the same slot as Kinetic weapons, or we need a better and more deep Energy system.

Take a look at Borderlands 2, for example. It doesn't have that deep of a system, it's mostly fairly basic stuff: there are different elements that are more effective against particular enemy types(so if you're fighting unarmored enemies, you can deal more damage with Fire-based weapons, while armored foes would be best dealt with by using Corrosive-based weapons), while being less effective against other enemy types. Meanwhile, non-elemental weapons aren't good against any particular enemy type, but can be effective against all of them.

It's a simple system, but it certainly has more depth than what Destiny 2 has, where Energy weapons are only more effective against shields of shielded enemies, and after shields are down they are less effective. Furthermore, matching energy type to enemy shield doesn't really give that much of a bonus to bother with it.

And of course, there's a problem of Power weapons being overcrowded, with some options being better than others, but people have talked about that a lot already.

I Miss those days when we all hated Rahool the most.

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 08:22 AM PST

He is probably the only guy who is happy about the micro-transaction shit storm. We kinda forgot that we used to hate him.

Something is really wrong with that game right now, I hope bungie is re-evaluating this all micro-transaction thing. We should go back to hating Rahool and celebrate blue fusion rifles at the Gunsmith, those days were much, much better.

Bungie Please: Quest Kiosk, also known as "Leave My Weapon slots alone".

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 10:09 AM PST

Hey Bungie,

I don't really mind that you are dropping quests into item locations. For the most part it makes a bunch of sense. HOWEVER, if I decide to abandon a quest, even one that points me to your raid. Please respect my wishes. I realize that the intent here is to give someone that might have accidentally deleted it another chance at it, but I don't think it needs to drop every time I kill a Cabal. I realized this last night running strikes on my 3rd alt. I already have Legend of Acrius and I just abandoned the quest on my hunter. Every time I went into a strike It would drop again on my first Cabal kill. Delete it again? Oh no, we'll just give it right back. It's like Bungie is walking behind me going "Hey, You dropped this!".

tl;dr If I abandon a quest, please stop giving it to me every 2 seconds. I need that weapon slot because the vault is pitifully small. If we had a kiosk again we could go there to get it if we needed it back.

How many of you only play this ONE game?

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 09:05 AM PST

That's me.

A long time ago, before the Dark Times, I was a Spartan. Eventually, 343i drove me away and I didn't play games anymore. At all.

It took until March 2015 for my friends to talk me into giving Destiny a try. I fell in love and never looked back over 3500+ hours. THIS is why I have to cling to my optimism regarding this game. I'm not an apologist. I don't condone Bungie's performance over the first few months of Destiny 2. But the simple fact is I'm terrified of getting to the point where I walk away.

I'm not a gamer; I'm a Guardian. I don't want to stop being a Guardian.

The new ghosts are ugly...

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 07:20 AM PST

Ok, I'm going to outright say it, the new ghosts look ugly. They look like someone threw their ghost too hard multiple times and it just stayed that way...

These "Hit the wall too fast" look really don't do anything for me. Give me a Sigera looking one... or give me the ability to customize it to some extent. (more than these shaders)

These new things Bungie is coming out with lately really is more miss than hit.

*Edit for an understanding*

When I say Sigera looking one, I don't mean I want Sigera, I want one that looks like her. Sigera is only for Mercury to be useful... I just want a skin for my ghost or something of the sort so my ghost can have the same effects as Sigera without needing to grind needless hours to get her shell.

Destiny 2’s Silver is among the most popular Add-ons on Playstation Store

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 07:22 AM PST

The spendgame doesn't work for us, it hurts our end game and takes away the fun we could have from events, like The Dawning. But it works for Bungie and Activision.

It's sad to see our game going into such a poor direction and getting a lot of revenue out of it. It's like we are approving the state of the game.

Remmember, no voice is louder than your wallet. If you are unsatisfied with the direction Destiny 2 went, avoid spending money on silver.

Kotaku names D2 as one of 2017 video game disappointments 'cause it keeps making D1 mistakes

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 12:29 PM PST

https://kotaku.com/the-biggest-video-game-disappointments-of-2017-1821497305

They liked the game, but got tired of the same shit that we had to deal with in D1.

I played about 5 hours of the dawning. It's fun for about 5 hours, but I can see it getting a little old. The Grind is just not the same.

edit: I think that the first sentence really sums up r/dtg:

Bungie Continuously Beats Its Playerbase To A Pulp

Posted: 20 Dec 2017 01:14 PM PST

I just wanted to say this, as clearly and concisely as possible; I apologize for the salt, but this has been on my mind for a while. From under-cooked, bloody, raw, DLC's to two stacks of the same shader, one of which gives dust and one of which doesn't simply because you purchased one and not the other, to completely inappropriate nerfs, to the consistent mishandling of pretty much every aspect of their game. Honestly, if the gunplay weren't there, what would there be to keep us coming back to this game?

I am so sick of trying to enjoy this game that I've loved since day one of D1 and being constantly slapped across the damn face by a developer who, frankly, seems incapable of giving a single solitary fuck about their playerbase; and I really mean that. I have really tried to focus on the gunplay, and stay positive, but with the Dawning and the likely onslaughts to come it's just too much now. They used to be subtle in their laziness, and TTK was an excellent step forward as were expansions from then on, but now it feels like the game's development process is being run by some stubborn 5 year old who can't stop holding their middle finger up to your face. It's a toxic and abusive relationship, plain and simple; and it's disappointing as hell.

The Dawning was a great opportunity for them to take a shot at redemption, and it looked good to begin with. But two hours in and I see that leveling up gives you regular loot boxes, the boons don't even give you the seasonal gear, and the armor isn't even in the gift quests loot pool... I mean, what the hell? 'Tis the season to be fucking greedy apparently. I honestly don't know what to expect from Bungie going forward, but let me tell you, the bar is real fucking low. Literally any semblance of effort would be like a damn firework show at this point. Right now, every action they take seems to say "fuck you and your enjoyment, give me your fucking money or else", and if they claim otherwise, they sure as hell had me fooled.

This could be such an incredible game under proper management. Honestly, if this game were properly developed, it would likely dominate the charts. It's just a shame that its fate is being determined by the actions of a developer who is still riding their own Halo glory days dick and continuously and consistently proves to be more and more unworthy of the title "Game Developer", and even more so of the name "Bungie".

Remember when we all saw the Destiny 1 announcement at E3 and our thoughts were "wow these are the guys who made Halo"? How much weight does that name hold now? A fraction of that I reckon.

To be clear though, none of this applies to the visual and audio designers of the game. They are the ones who deserve the real praise. It's a shame they're being bottle necked by the people they labor beneath. Bungie needs to start investing its resources in the right places. And that IS NOT Eververse.

sigh

I think I'm gonna take a break from this game for a couple of months. I just needed to get some of this salt off my chest. I'll see you guys around.

EDIT: Nice to see the support guys. For Bungie to see, accurately, where it stands as of today in the eyes of the community is of fundamental importance to the state of the game. Keep the feedback and comments coming.

EDIT: Damn, reddit gold, I appreciate the enthusiasm guys, truly.

EDIT: Some comments mentioned that this post lacks constructive criticism. While it was only intended to express some thoughts, I've given a rudimentary improvements list a go below.

LIST OF POTENTIAL IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Heroic strike playlist re-instated for all players, no long locked behind a DLC after it was already available in game.

  • If Eververse must stay, i would argue that the ratio of aesthetically comparable gear in EV to in game rewards systems such as strikes should be in the range of 1:3 to 1:5. You cant have a looter shooter where literally more than 50% of the loot is behind the lootbox system.

  • Less childish dialogue. Seriousness needs to be re-introduced into this game. You expect me to believe the characters are devastated by the capture of the city while they take every single opportunity to make a discount Cayde 6 joke? Come on.

  • I'm not a huge fan of the new weapons system. It feels like 70% of powerful weapons are stuck competing for one slot while the other 30% are split between two. I personally would not be opposed to reverting to the D1 weapon system or perhaps adding a 4th PVE only weapon (i saw this in a post on this sub but i could not locate it, so credit to whoever that was :D).

  • For the love of god, get rid of the hidden juggler perk. It's so obvious that it's there.

  • The re-introduction of ammo syntheses would make us feel much more powerful in strikes and raids where now we feel like beached whales when we run out of ammo.

  • Exotics should feel more powerful than legendaries and should hold true value in your inventory. Perhaps a set of pvp perks vs pve perks might be considered to avoid the complications of attempting to balance different pieces in both pve and pvp.

  • Raid loot needs an overhaul to increase incentive across the board. Make the various raids worth completing fully.

  • Super cooldowns in general should be upped (not drastically). Just to increase the pace of combat in pve and pvp and make us feel more powerful. The success of the re-introduction of mayhem was, if anything, a sign that this is the correct direction to move in.

  • PVP needs to be slightly faster paced (see the above point). I believe this could be accomplished by getting rid of this whole team-shooting gangbang meta that devalues the skill of individual guardians and discourages heroic displays of pure skill.

  • Either the re-introduction of permanent swappable shaders, or the implementation of a system of crafting permanent shaders out of a certain number of the consumable shader equivalent.

  • Furthermore, there should be permanent shaders aquired through activity completions for specific challenges. Raids, specific strikes, certain milestones, etc.

  • From now on, Bungie should be 100% transparent with numbers working behind the scenes such as XP gains, 3oC boost numbers, etc.

  • Perhaps make exotics slightly harder to get and thus more exciting to open in terms of engrams. I was pretty taken aback when I got to pick up my first exotic after playing only an hour or so.

This was simply what I could come up with right now. Feel free to leave feedback below!

D2 is 2nd Highest Selling game in 2017

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 08:04 AM PST

"As for Destiny 2, the latest from Bungie is the second highest-selling 2017 game based on revenue and is also Activision's biggest PC launch ever based on units sold. The sequel has now outsold 2014's Destiny"

TFA: http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/12/21/call-of-duty-wwii-destiny-2-top-us-sales-for-2017

Is D2 successful? Financially, yes. In the eyes of a minority (people here) maybe not?

Questions that will get this downvoted:

What if Bungie's vision for the game is exactly what they delivered?

What if they really don't care (i.e. it doesn't make financial sense to spend time building things) to cater to 1-5% of the players that want an MMO like experience where they want to have something to do for hours per day?

EDIT:

There's been a couple comments about the "will get this downvoted" bit. My comment from below:

I honestly thought those questions would put this into the trash bin of posts because I think there is significant willful ignorance in r/DTG about what they wanted Destiny 2 to be and what Bungie's vision for D2 was.

An analogy might help: what if Bungie's vision for D2 was a commuter car based on last year's model but slightly different. It is gorgeous, has a great sound system but really isn't something you'd go cross-country in, never was the intent. It seems (with this analogy) that r/DTG thinks that D2 should be a full size cruising SUV, yeah it can do your random commute but man this thing will take you places: 10 cupholders, leather armrests, GPS, a mini-fridge, TV screens, etc. for those long cross country trips.

My questions are simply that - what if Bungie wanted a commuter car and delivered it and all this talk about vault, economy/loot, endgame is just "noise" to them from people that wanted a different car?

TL;DW: Mayhem is back and its great, and snowballs are fun and sort of effective. Bungie, you have plans for DLC 2 already? Here is a suggestion. Push it back.

Posted: 20 Dec 2017 06:39 PM PST

You have plans for the DLC? Push it back. At the drawing board for the first major expansion? Push it back. Destiny 3? Push it back.

You seriously need to go back to the drawing board, take some real time, and come up with something to blow our minds. You need to release something that is well thought out, well executed, and takes the communities gripes, complaints (warranted or not) into consideration.

You need to throw us a bone, fix your reputation, and show through action that "you are listening". Because believe us Bungie, we are listening too. We hear how you "are listening" again and again. And we have heard enough. Time to actually do something.

You want to know how we feel? This is how we feel. And by now I assume (though that hasn't gotten the fans anywhere) that you know why. You sure as hell should. If DLC 2 is anything like CoO or The Dawning, you better believe a lot of us aren't coming back for the Expansions, or Destiny 3.

So, do your pockets a favor. Take some time to properly develop something that will win us back.

Tl;dr Salt.

Edit: "Better" to "need"

Bungie: DLC's & the QoL aren't Killing your Game, Eververse is.

Posted: 20 Dec 2017 03:56 PM PST

I feel like I can't go a single day enjoying Destiny 2 without being depressed that Queue Times in Crucible & Strikes are getting Longer, more Public Events are done Solo, My Clan and I played Destiny 1 Everyday for it's entire length, but now they've all but left and I continue playing, hoping to see Destiny Change in a big way.

Every day I post things giving my feedback hoping to see your weekly update address the issues, and every single time you address an issue, a larger, more disappointing issue pops up.

Destiny 1 was not without its issues, but I almost feel like Bungie has learned nothing in the 3 Years Destiny 1's life span.

With that out of the way, let's get into the Meat of the problem, Eververse. Destiny 2 has traded out Quality for Commerce. While the Art team is hard at work, all of that work is behind Random Lootboxes. Initially Eververse just had Cosmetics, then they Got Armor, Destiny 2 brought Weapon Mods, CoO brought Exotic Ghosts that gave bonuses to your Loot & Experience Gains.

Eververse is soaking up all of the items and armor sets that that people want and I feel obligated to grind exp just for a chance to fail to get 1 thing that I want.

Bungie, I really want to keep playing and despite everything's that's happened, maybe for now I'll just be a weekend warrior, because I can't afford to spend my time on this Destiny Themed Slot Machine.

Now that the Salt out of the Way, Bungie I know you can make the Best Game on the Market, and I know you know what the Community wants, stop investing in Eververse and start investing in your player-base.

Edit: wow I didn't expect this to catch on like this, I really hope Bungie will change focus, I really want Destiny 2 to be great, and I know it's not going to be an easy fix, but I hope Bungie will see what the community wants and acts

Edit#2: I've been noticing that there are people saying that Eververse doesn't affect gameplay, which your are technically correct, but when a Developer is using more resources to Develop Micro-Transactions than to Develop Fixes to the infrastructure of a game that's suppose to last another 3 years or however long D2 is supposed to last, it does affect gameplay.

Would we still be mad at Eververse if Destiny 2 was a great game with deep build diversity, itemization, and replayable loot hunts?

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 11:19 AM PST

It's hip to hate on Bungie these days, but I'm wondering if the hate is really about microtransactions or are we mad that D2 was a shallower RPG experience than D1, while we have been waiting for years for it to be deeper.

Speaking for myself, I am emotionlessly neutral about the Dawning cosmetic/Eververse salt. I have no desire to dress my Guardian up when I am not deeply invested in it's build design. The game simply doesn't allow players to personalize their playstyle in any meaningful way, and consequently I feel no desire to personalize my character's appearance.

I think deep down inside, we are mad because Bungie is trying to sell us the Icing without the cake. If the cake tastes good, we'd be more happy to splurge on some sprinkles.

/edit: some grammatical/typo shit that's bugging me.
