PSA: Please don't call the smash 4 mod "Melee HD". Remember what happened to AM2R?

That's assuming, of course, that melee HD is actually being developed lol

ZeRo vs. the Field: Top 10 ZeRo Losses in PGR v4

Posted: 24 Nov 2017 10:46 AM PST

I've been preparing for the 2GG Championship by doing what I do best: rewatching top 8's from the entire season when I should be grading papers. ZeRo's had a lot of losses this season, huh? He's still #1, but that doesn't make the upsets any less hype. These are my favorites, in order. They are also inarguable, because I have never had a wrong opinion, so DON'T state your disagreements.

1. TSM | ZeRo vs. bc | Mr. R - MKLeo Saga Losers Side

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=425O6QjcYTA&t=739s

Make no mistake, this was kind of a huge deal. Mr. R has only taken two sets off ZeRo previously - one was in ZeRo's spring 2016 slump (hand-related), and one was at Royal Flush as Cloud this past May. (ZeRo ultimately took the tournament from Mr. R.) The resulting set is maybe the best Smash 4 we've seen all year. Mr. R makes frequent use of dash-dancing, lightning-quick gimps (which he takes game 4 with), and other technical tomfoolery like b-reverse needles. ZeRo keeps up, getting a 2-1 lead that is only blown by Diddy's mediocre recovery. It's so satisfying to watch Mr. R take the set not through DLC, not through up-air trains and spikes, but with brilliant Sheik play and Melee speed.

2. TSM | ZeRo [W] vs. NRG | Nairo [L] - Super Smash Con GFs Set One

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AFZj_sFL3c&t=9s

Nairo has taken 4 sets off ZeRo in 2017; all are worth watching. However, this first set at Super Smash Con reigns supreme. Rewatching it, I'm stunned by how close Nairo was to losing - there was no guarantee his godlike loser's run would continue to 1st place, nor was there any guarantee he would make it past the first set. Nairo comes ridiculously close to getting 3-1'd, barely saving himself in game 4 with good DI and a miraculous out-of-shield Boost Kick. The set is fucking amazing. ZeRo is playing at the top of his game, and still loses.

3. TSM | ZeRo vs. Marss - The Big House 7 Loser's Semis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdXhgar7f2A

After barely clutching out sets against Nairo and Salem, arguably the two other players closest to #1 this season, ZeRo gets 3-0'd by Marss - a player so absent from this Smash 4 season that he was seeded 23rd. What the fuck happened? Well, unlike Nairo, Marss plays a slow and deliberate neutral game that is almost solely on the ground. It's interesting to see this development from Marss. He's not more patient than Nairo, per se, but there's a method to his play here: don't jump, and if you jump, make it a short hop. ZSS mains could learn from his sobriety.

4. TSM | ZeRo vs. MVG | Salem - EVO 2017 Grand Finals

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obWXT0WFdK8

Is there anything left to say about this Grand Finals? Well, yes. In fact it's only gotten more prescient as this latest Smash 4 season has come to a close. In one tournament we have a) the beginning of Salem's rise to the top 5, hinted at in Nairo Saga; b) ZeRo's most devastating loss ever, and the beginning of a month of thrown Grand Finals; and c) the beginning of Bayonetta's total dominance this season, having exceeded Cloud in tournament success and exceeded any other character in top 8 frequency. And it's an amazing set. Both players are at the top of their game, but Salem plays it cool and refuses to take a step too far. Ultimately ZeRo fails due to reckless behavior, like the now-famous Monkey Flip in game 10, and snatches defeat from the claws of victory. Salem remains within striking distance of #1 this year, but he'd have to win the 2GG championship to get it. If he does, the questions raised by EVO 2017 - is ZeRo still the best player? Should Bayonetta be banned? Is Salem the new Ally? - will be reopened.

5. TSM | ZeRo vs. Cosmos - The Big House 7 Top 32

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zTEUWPt4qo

Rounding it out, we have ZeRo's first 3-0 loss this YEAR and first loss to a Corrin. Corrin is to the PGR v4 what Bayo was to v3: a character who finally started to prove him/herself after months of hazy speculation about "potential." Cosmos went from unranked to potentially top 20 in a single tournament; his edgeguards and combo game are unreal here. And ZeRo certainly does not choke - every game goes to one stock, and by mid-game 3 you think "maybe ZeRo will clutch this out." Cosmos is an amazing player, and he's brought Corrin back into top 10 speculation. Expect him to make waves at the 2GG Championship. {edit: Dabuz actually 3-0'd ZeRo at ARMS Saga a few months earlier; this was the second time this season, not the first.)

SPEAKING OF WHICH: if either Nairo or Salem takes the 2GG Championship, the question of #1 is a serious one. ZeRo's ranking lead has never been more tenuous than it is now. Will Tweek take a second tournament and climb to top 2 or 3? Will Nairo buster out and potentially land himself in #5 or #6 on the PGR? Will ZeRo come in the clutch and cement himself as the world's best Sm4sh player? Or will Salem cruise to Grand Finals and win without losing a set? Will Leo or Dabuz????? There's never been a more chaotic and uncertain top 6 in the game's history, and this single tournament will determine between a wide variety of outcomes. I'll close by saying this: depending on the 2GG Championship, second place on the PGR could be any of these players.

ZeRo

Nairo

Salem

MKLeo

Tweek

Dabuz

Chat moderation during Super FamiCon 2017

Posted: 24 Nov 2017 10:15 AM PST

Hey guys, this is a few days late as we were all busy with the holidays and such, but we wanted to address some of the issues with chat moderation during Super FamiCon.

For those unaware, there were problems with moderation while a transgender player appeared on stream for an extended period of time. As you can imagine, chat exploded with transphobic comments and insults towards the player. We have zero tolerance for this type of behavior, and we stand by that 100%. That said, there were times where people got wrongfully banned amongst all the chaos, often for just genuinely not knowing the player's gender.

Our mods have strict instructions to not permaban unless absolutely necessary, but it became apparent this was being ignored. Particularly, a few mods were banning for people spamming HotPokket GDQ style. This was not authorized by us at all and those mods have been removed.

We were actively watching the reddit threads while directing the stream, and you may have seen us asking people for their usernames so we could unban them. I'd like to do the same again, so if you feel you were wrongfully banned from the channel, please comment or DM your username and I will unban you right away.

Falco vs Marth matchup

Posted: 24 Nov 2017 09:27 PM PST

So i'm just kinda getting started with melee and I'm trying to pick it up quick. I've been practicing my Marth for a while, and I've got some movement stuff going ok, I've got some punish stuff going ok, but I do not have some neutral game or defence stuff going ok at all. I just got back from getting absolutely trounced by my buddy's falco (about 5 wins to 1 ratio) and I can't seem to figure out how to stop off his approach, or make my own. Most of my success came from knowing the guy really well and thinking "what is homeslice over here gonna do at this moment" and smashing that counter. However, this is inconsistent and got predictable quick so that's not a great option. I need to find a way to not get popped after lasers. My buddy loves to run up, wait for me to do a retreating fair or dair, and pop me in the foot with a laser to interupt and follow that up with combing me right to 60/70%. He also likes to wait until I'm about to go in for any attack and laser into shine or laser and let me drift into an up/f smash. What are some ways to avoid being stunned by lasers, and also as a secondary point how the hell do you break out of a falco combo I'm in hitstun until I did.

TLDR: I'm very bad and want to be less very bad by figuring out falco lasers
