/r/PokemonGO is recruiting new moderators! Apply within

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 10:52 AM PST

Hello all! We're looking to take on some more mods to help keep /r/pokemongo running well. Are you up for the job? Then read on below!

As a mod, your responsibilities would include:

  • Responding to moderator mail as quickly and helpfully as possible. We are looking for volunteers with strong communication skills who can remain upbeat, even when dealing with difficult people and situations

  • Helping to check every new submission to the subreddit, and watching carefully to make sure the comments don't get out of hand either!

  • Politely and productively participating in internal discussions, both in our private subreddit and our Slack chat

  • Being the very best, like no one ever was

Before you apply, be warned that moderating can be difficult. Be prepared to put in a lot of time, and be further prepared to deal with rude people who will question every decision you make. Please only apply if you're willing to do the following:

  • Maintain a courteous demeanor when dealing with people on the subreddit

  • Participate in a trial period before becoming a full moderator

  • Actively participate in mod discussions on Slack

  • Install and use the Reddit moderator toolbox extension (please note that this is a desktop-only extension, so you should be confident you can do the majority of your work from desktop, not mobile, before you apply)

Please note that Reddit moderators are fan volunteers. No compensation is provided and we are not affiliated with Niantic or Pokemon in any official way.

If you understand what you're getting into, and you're still up for the job, you can apply by filling out this form. The application is fairly long, so we'd suggest waiting to complete it until you have some time to spare. If you applied in the past, you'll still need to fill out a new application this time around.

Applications will be open until Friday, November 17. Decisions will be made by the new year. We'll take on as many new mods as we feel comfortable adding, and we may contact you about a follow-up conversation or second-wave application before making a decision. Due to the high number of applications we typically receive, we will only contact you if we decide to add you as a moderator.

Best of luck! If you've got any questions about the application, please message the current mods here.

My campus has a PokeStop and Gym map for new students

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 05:25 PM PST

[Suggestion] Put a button on the gym screen which shows the raid schedule for the next 24 hours (from midnight). Watch participation go waaaay up.

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 09:34 AM PST

I don't have many gyms around (an hour walk up a mountain hiking trail to the nearest 2) and even though I'd like to do daily raids, it almost never happens. I'm almost at the point that I could solo some tier 3, but that would depend on actually seeing the right ones at the right times.

There are however places that I sometimes do long multi-hour walks to which have a bunch of gyms. If I knew what was going to be on and where, I'd even plan my walk around it, and maybe even try to meet up with people and plan in advance. As it stands, things are too haphazard for me to even invest in trying from so far out and on such rare occasions. If I knew that I could plan a route around multiple raids which I'm interested in, I'd actually have a reason to care about paid raid passes, let alone my unused daily free raid passes.

[Suggestion] Even more extra stuff: who's that pokémon minigame (with bonus item rewards)

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 08:35 AM PST

I️ finally made it to level 35! It took me 4 months to go from 34 to 35 thanks to high school.

They should put in some NPCs in this game

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 07:23 AM PST

This is probably a much requested feature but I'm not really an avid player but the game looks pretty empty to be honest. Would be cool if there were some characters popping up here and there, maybe offer some missions or something.

Can we please get Smeargle and Delibird by Christmas?!

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 03:19 PM PST

Look I don't care how you release them whether you make it so Smeargle spawns for Thanksgiving or Delibird spawns for Christmas or both Smeargle and Delibird spawn for Christmas I could really care less how they do it. Just please for the love of Pokemon release them already!

Niantic really needs a better marketing team/strategy....

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 11:05 AM PST

Now I'm not saying that I'm a marketing professional, however, I am a bored college student who needs new Pokémon to catch!!

I truthfully and respectfully think Niantic's company (or at least in regards to this game) are very foolish.

I thought the introduction of Gen. 3 ghost types was a perfect mini-introduction to the "new" Pokémon and perfect for Halloween. Nonetheless, I think if Niantic really wanted to capitalize on this game they would've released the rest of/majority of the Gen. 3 Pokémon a week or two after the event ended .... not waiting until December.

The event ended nearly a week ago, and I have no desire to play the game again (as of rn). Yes, you could argue that there's still the Legendary Beasts in the raids.... but is that really enough of a reason to play the game still? I'm sorry, I caught Suicune after a few tries, and now I'm bored (I was still bored while trying to catch it too).

I just think it was very very stupid on their part to hold the new generation off for another month. They should've released them while the hype was still there stemming from the event (which I loved). Waiting until December, especially a time of year where the weather is cold for most, is so stupid.

[Idea] Raid specific Spawns

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 10:57 AM PST

As an example, what I mean is an Alakazam raid hatches, then maybe increase the chances of an Abra spawn around during the raid. Or maybe the raid boss attracts counters like a Tyranitar raid increases the chance of a Machoke spawn.

Completing a raid at a gym should guarantee ALL players an EX Raid Pass if that location is chosen

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 04:10 PM PST

My girlfriend and I did a Suicune raid at a sponsored location (Starbucks) three hours ago - EX Passes just went out and neither of us got one. If that doesn't indicate a broken system, I don't know what does. If you complete the raid at the chosen sponsored raid, you should get an EX pass. Not a perfect Mewtwo, not a shiny one - all I'm saying is players should receive the same opportunity.

Someone in our Discord received passes to two locations in the most recent round of passes. Yet neither of us got a single one? Fix this system.

PROOF: Two EX passes, one trainer

[IDEA] EX Raid Quests!

Where did all the younger players go?

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 11:54 AM PST

I'm a younger player myself in my early 20s and I remember back in the first few weeks and months, teens and those in their early 20s dominated the scene. In fact, I don't recall seeing many players over 30, if any. Looking back at videos of people playing Pokemon Go in groups, they're all younger players and older ones are nowhere to be seen.

You could see a lot of young people walking in the parks and swiping on their phones and knew they were playing Pokemon Go. We connected with each other and had a number of shared interests, especially when it came to gaming.

Now? I'm the youngest player in the raid groups and local Discord. The next youngest player is in his late 30s and the largest age group are those in their 40s. Of course gamers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome, but the demographic shift is striking and I'm curious as to the reason.

This older generation of players is also taking the game much more seriously than I've ever seen with people in my age group. They often go out past midnight to recapture gyms or to catch rare Pokemon that showed up in the scanner channels on Discord. They drive around doing raids, spinning stops, and catching Pokemon. Back in the early days, we actually walked outside in parks and shared sighting information.

I've never seen a game shift so rapidly in its demographics. You don't just swap out 20s for 40s in a few months for most games.

Does anyone have any theories as to what there seems to be such a switch? Have you seen such a change in your area? How old are you?

Prediction: Australia and U.S will get their own Safari like event. Where both will get rare spawns including unown spawns, but Australia get Tauros spawns and United States get Farfetch’ed spawns.

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 11:07 AM PST

Europe had their Safari event and got Kangaskan and now Asia is having one similar now with Mr. Mime spawns coming in this weekend. That leaves United States and Australia along with their regionals. It's just a prediction but it would make sense. That would be cool too as Farfetch'ed is my favorite regional. I only have one but don't know when the next time I'll be in Asia.

[Video] The Gym system has become a nightmare! Help needed. My explanation in the comment

[Complaint] - I'm getting REALLY fed up...

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 10:02 PM PST

Let me start by saying I LOVE playing Pokemon GO. It is something I highly enjoy. So much so that I have tried to play past all the bugs, lack of communication, and issues that have played this game since practically launch. I have put up with being cheated out of raids. Even that wasn't enough to stop me from playing at least an hour daily, buying a new phone to have a better experience, and buy 3 GO+ (2 I gave to friends). It has been the topic of most my social media, and entertainment from actually playing, and to watching Youtubers play it as well that share their experience.

All that being said, I'm not one to shy away from giving my opinion, even if negative. Unfortunately, that leads me here.

I don't have a degree that is relevant to creating an AR, mobile game. However, in my place of work, my co-workers do have said degrees, and they have said it's quite inexcusable for a company that has made a BILLION in revenue to have a game this... sad.

This is a big rant, but I will try to offer my personal opinions on how to fix some of these issues. I'm sure many of these have been brought up, but despite loving this game, I'm starting to question if I should quit or not. If I wasn't so close to level 40, I would likely have switched over to Draconius GO, which it seems people have started debating doing so because it appears Elyland looks at all the complaints people have with Pokemon GO and inserts it into their game. I have yet to play it, but I've heard many people state that all the issues with Pokemon GO are FIXED in Draconius GO. Let's begin.

1) Rubberbanding health - This one seems relatively new. Yesterday I watched PokeAK, Big Daddy Red, and ProdigiesNation do raid bosses. Each of them had rubberbanding health. What this means is they do a large chunk of damage, but the boss SOMEHOW regains that chunk of health back. The timer doesn't reset, your health doesn't reset, but somehow the raid bosses health does. This has happened to me too when soloing raids, and have failed a Machamp raid because of it when my average time to beat it is about 40-50 seconds, regardless of its moveset.

2) Timer starting way late, and ending too early. I've seen this happen a LOT of PokeAK's videos and he's ranted about it too. Granted, I think its more of his phone then the game, but this has happened to me and others on IOS, which is the platform the game was developed for. You are suppose to get 180 seconds to beat the boss. NEVER have I seen 180 or even 179 on the timer. Some people get an entire 10 seconds shaven off their time, and as T3 solo players know, that 10 seconds matters to a lot of bosses. The same thing happens when the "Time's up" screen appears when you have 6 seconds remaining on the timer, and you aren't even allowed to attack for a few seconds before that because you actually beat the boss, but it didn't start "fainting" until after the timer ran out (or didn't run out and it just ended early).

3) The dodge bug - This has been in the game since launch, and is the most frustrating bug in the game. Basically you dodge the opponents attack. You get "Dodged" appearing above your Pokemon. About 3 seconds later, you lose all your health and your pokemon faints. Personally, against Mewtwo, I used Tyranitars and it had focus blast. I fainted, despite dodging, ALL OF THE FOCUS BLASTS.

4) Taking damage TWICE from ONE charge attack. Sometimes its before the charge attack animation even displays. Well before. You just randomly take the damage. Then it does the charge attack and you take the damage AGAIN. Sometimes you don't even bother dodging, because your Pokemon would faint anyways. But then your new Pokemon comes in with half health after the previous one took all the damage from that charge attack. Going back to rubberbanding health, I've actually had a Pokemon I NEVER USED be fainted and have lost all my Pokemon when only using THREE of them.

The simple solution? UPDATE YOUR SERVERS NIANTIC. You have a billion in revenue. I'm aware a lot likely goes to the Pokemon company but still, it's ridiculous how the servers lag so badly in a game that produces so much revenue. Its making it frustrating for players. In Legendary raids I don't even bother paying attention or dodging because I'm going to take the damage anyways. The ridiculous amount of bugs and lag in the combat in this game is pathetic. I didn't even mention how the energy meter rubberbands EVERY SINGLE TIME. I've watched countless videos of people doing solo raids (to study) and see them have the same exact issues, so I know it's not just my phone or personal connection.

5) The lack of communication by Niantic. It's pathetic how this company NEVER speaks to its playerbase AT ALL. We had NO idea that raid bosses were being switched out. The only communication we've gotten is a stupid AR contest. We don't know what's coming, or when things are coming, or anything like that. People have to rely on Youtubers for information, and they make some video going "OMG GEN 3!!" getting people hyped up, then we only get 5 Gen 3 Pokemon, and then the Youtubers get trashed because people were expecting more (that is on them though, and the youtubers for hyping things up blindly, but that doesn't excuse Niantic for being terrible at communication).

6) EX raids are a scam. Along with the terrible communication, it's no doubt the EX raid system is a complete scam. When it was first announced, people went around and did raids numerous locations in hopes that they'd get an invite. Now that it's not just sponsored gyms, people go around doing any raid they can find. There is a gym in my city that I've done many raids at in the past week. The last I did was a Snorlax with about 14 people on Sunday. ONE person of the 14 was given an EX raid pass. ONE at this gym. Despite having met all the requirements for getting an invite, I don't get one... why? I have done what was asked. I've spent my money on raids I didn't care to do but did it anyways because I want to get a Mewtwo. Yet, I didn't get a pass? 12 other people didn't get one as well? I'm considering going to the raid anyways to see how many people are actually there. The lack of communication and the fact you aren't gauranteed a pass when that gym is selected, and your activity and participation in raids at that gym is sickening. I feel quite cheated about this.

I could go on and on about my issues with this game. The fact some of the bugs BENEFIT Niantic (like 2 items per stop rather than the usual 3, that took about 3 weeks to "fix"). The fact we get updates that say "Fixed various bugs" but no one seems to know what bugs were actually fixed. But honestly I could write a book about how this game has terrible bugs and lag that really damage the experience and how it feels to numerous people that Niantic doesn't seem to care. I'm just not going to bother.

Please fix these issues Niantic. It is quite frustrating that the gameplay is so hampered by these bugs.

PS - you're losing a lot of business because raids didn't swap with DLS. I'm lucky to even use my free pass for the day.

[Discussion] Some (new?) informations about Ex Raids, a question and a problem

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 07:26 PM PST

First at all, english is not my mother language, so I apologize for any mistakes.

Well, I'm going to begin with a fact, after some hypotheses and at last a question.

The fact: The new Ex Raid passes were distributed today and they are going to happen this weekend in one gym that I'm present mostly of the time. On Monday me and my girlfriend raided there in the middle of the afternoon, we did not came back there this week neither to Raid or to fight in the gym. Tonight she got an Ex Raid pass and I didn't.

The informations: I cannot say that I'm not kinda sad, because I didn't got one, but I'm also happy for her, specially because she does not play that much and this is definitely some motivation for her (I also would like to have this motivation, she's level 22 and I'm 32, but okay). So, one thing's for sure, unlike what Niantic said, if you make a Raid in the right time and in the right gym, you can't be sure that you will receive the pass, I'm the example. But beyond that, I talked to a friend who for coincidence also got the Ex Raid pass and he gave me 100% sure that he did not raided there this week, the only thing he did in this gym was to put one pokémon to defend it on Tuesday. I did found it very upsetting, because you can't have sure that you will receive the pass even you match the odds and random people got the same chance as you, if not more to receive the pass. I could not help to remember the case of the player who was low level (something like level 5 ou 7) and had never raided before, ever, but he got the EX Raid pass and Niantic George immediately answered the topic, so, it makes me think how out of control is the distribution pass system. However, in case of research, I'm going to add some other informations: The raid was a Tier 3 Machamp. Me and my girlfriend spinned the photo disc of the gym after the raid. But we did not fight in the gym neither left any pokémon to defend it. I raided like 6 or 7 times after that, in other locations. My girfriend never raided there before, her first time was with me in that location. My girlfriend didn't raided after that, the Machamp was her last Raid.

It also makes me raise some hypothesis that perhaps the EX Raid passes are given to the people whose last raid is in the chosen place, or this thing doesn't makes any sense, I can't undestand how it works.

At last, my question is: has it happened to someone also? Like you raided one time with someone and the other person got the pass but you didn't?

Pokeathelon Idea

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 09:29 PM PST

In Pokémon Soulsilver/Heartgold there was this mini game called the pokeathelon. You would get your Pokémon and use them to compete in Olympic-like events. (Hurdles, Brick Smash, etc...) I was thinking Niantic could use this as a way for us to get some rewards outside of raids, but not as easy as spinning a stop. I was think inside each gym you had the option to compete in the event of the day. You do the event and set a high score for that event for that day. If by the end of the day nobody beats your high score, you win the prize. (TM's, Rare Candy, Golden Razz, etc...) Or I was thinking it would be a once a week thing, where in 2-3 hour time frame gyms became pokedomes, and everybody competed for their team to get the big global final prize for the winning team. Also, the pokeathlon was mainly based on your reaction time and skill, and it deemphasized your Pokémon lvl/IV's as much as usual, if I remember correctly. This makes it so the guy with a 100% 2800 CP Alakazam doesn't win all the hurdles events for being the fastest. This is a workable idea that needs some balance, please post your thoughts below.

How to reset the Go Plus and connect to a new device

Posted: 09 Nov 2017 08:26 PM PST

I've seen a few posts around asking why a Plus won't connect to someone's new phone, and the common solution has been to do a full reset on the Plus. Video below shows how to do it for anyone who happens to need to do this but doesn't know how.
