/r/Overwatch Community Games Experimentation and Weekly Role Discussion Thread: (Support)

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 06:34 AM PST

Hello there everybody, sorry to hijack the weekly sticky for those who were participating it. It's still available here if you had any comment chains to reply to, or just wanted to check it out. The role we're discussing this week is support. Got any guides for a trash-tier mercy main such as myself?

As well as our usual Saturday tomfoolery, we're up to something new using Discord. For those of you who don't know, it's an internet text/voice-chat program that functions similarly to TeamSpeak etc.. You all probably know about our main Discord server, but what if I told you we had another? Well, the secret most definitely is out now.

The /r/Overwatch Games Discord server is a sister server to the /r/Overwatch Discord server that runs weekly in-house games and semi-regular 3v3 tournaments. If you're interested in playing casual in-house matches or participating in tournaments with other members of the community, join the server by clicking the link! Here it is again!

The next in-house games will be played today (Sat, Nov 11) at 18:30 CET for EU games and 6PM EST for NA games. There aren't any rewards or prizes at the moment, but if you want to meet some new people or bring your IRL 6 stack in to destroy some strangers, the playing field is all game.

So if you're keen for a great time, head on down. Please be advised that, at this time, the server is in a fairly experimental stage- so don't expect everything to be running smoothly. If you have any feedback, or would like to give us a hand keeping everything running, don't hesitate to ask the staff over on Discord, or send the subreddit boys a modmail.

Have a joyous weekend,

Love, the modteam. xxx

HulkTastic Cup - in honor of INTERNETHULK

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 07:35 AM PST

This week we sadly lost one of Overwatch's founding fathers; Dennis "INTERNETHULK" Hawelka. The community has come together in many ways to pay their respects towards Dennis, and that includes today's Hulktastic tournament organised by the community.

The tournament will be played on the Public Test Region, so we'll get to see the new Mercy, and of course the latest hero Moira! In addition, plenty of old names are coming back such as ARC6, melty, and bird noises. The folks from Blizzard are also fielding a team in the tournament.

It's set to be an allstar broadcast lineup as well with MonteCristo, DoA, ZP, hexagrams, Uber, JKap, Bren and FishStix all confirmed to be commenting. We're also going to be seeing other personalities such as Soe, Harsha, ChanmanV and Achilios sharing their memories of Dennis.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help towards any costs Dennis' family may incur as a result of his death. Dennis' father has given permission for this to be raised and has vowed to send any excess money to a children's charity. We also added a matcherino page for those of you not able to support the GuFundMe via PayPal, we will collect the money there and add it to the GoFundMe later.

Dennis' parents will be watching the tournament, so let's make them proud and show them what our community is made of.

If you want to support us without using the GoFundMe feel free to share stories and memories on Twitter using the Hashtag #HulkTastic

Below are a summary of details, let's make this a tournament to remember.

  • Time: 20:00 CET / 14:00 ET / 11:00 PT
  • Stream
  • Bracket
  • Format: BO3 single elimination, 1 hero limit, PTR

One Tricking Isn't Bannable but doing this as a one trick is

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 09:19 AM PST

Well this one trick banning discussion started with a post by XUL here https://redd.it/7c5gvh.

He claims that the only reason he got banned was for one tricking torb. Me and my friends played with him and got steamrolled on the payload map since they were heavily countering torb.

My friend Activates picked torb on attack to see what XUL would play after we asked him kindly to swap to ANYTHING else as we were flexible on our picks.

XUL responded by saying he's just gonna afk then. Rather than picking another character and playing the game he decided he would just sit in base without picking a hero. He kept timing out and back in so he wouldn't get banned from competitive afterwards.

From his actions in this clip shown if another torb main was on the team and picked it first he would've went afk in the base and just lost the game for the team since he was unwilling to pick anything else. This is the problem with some of these one-tricks, it's not the one tricking itself, its the player. XUL got banned for griefing or delibrate inactivity.

PROOF: https://streamable.com/hh7ro

EDIT: To clarify we let him play torb on defense and got crushed as he was getting super countered. The team made an effort to play around his pick and you can see by the time on the top right it didn't work.

EDIT 2: XUL's response that he deleted https://i.imgur.com/JDQxrU7.png

One-Tricking is Officially Bannable.

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 04:25 AM PST

r/Overwatch is going to change the flair to "Misleading" but you make the decision no matter what the flair, you've been explaining how this is either good/ridiculous to this moment...

Don't take notice to the flair and continue making your opinions based on what is presented here, we are looking at the response from Blizzard.

From the guy that was banned today for playing Torbjorn. This is the response he got from Blizzard.

Response: https://i.imgur.com/R3vLIOR.png (This matters the most in the post)

Original Post from u/XulHearthstone: https://redd.it/7c5gvh

"If that means that you are picking up a particular character, completely ignoring the rest of the team composition, and the requests from people, that they cannot accommodate you to your play-style, then the reports are justified I'm afraid."
~ Arcaxenosi - Game Master/Customer Support Representative.

Edit: We are on r/all say hi!

Edit 2: I would like this post flaired with the correct term when Blizzard makes a statement on it, If they confirm that you can be banned for One Tricking then a "Verified" would be put in place or if it isn't true at all then a "False" to be put in place.

Remove the level 25 cap for entering Competitive

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 03:28 PM PST

Replace it with [xx] hours on at least 4 heroes that heal, do dmg, tank and defend. I bet the devs can even set the [xx] hrs time frame that is comparable with the time frame of how many hrs you need to reach level 25.

Instead of going into year 2 with ultra high tech punishments for toxic people and advanced report systems. Lets help create a better community of people that enjoy playing more than 1/2/3 heroes, but actually enjoy playing 10 or more heroes from the roster and be effective.

Overwatch Devs honor INTERNETHULK with PTR Server Message

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 01:47 PM PST

Picture: https://i.imgur.com/3ozcego.png (Check the yellow text)

For those of you that missed it, INTERNETHULK (Dennis Hawelka), passed away this week from tonsillitis.

For those of you that didn't know him -- Dennis was the person who captained team EnVyUs (now mostly Dallas Fuel) to their initial success, and got a lot of relatively unknown players into the spotlight. He was a big figure in the e-sports scene, and its beautiful that Blizzard honors him this way.

This message was (probably) displayed to go with the 'HULKTASTIC Cup' thats going on right now, featuring teams that he helped form/had iconic matches against.

The cup is being held to honor him, and a fundraiser is attached to it (to help out his family) which can be found here -- We already smashed the goal, any extra donations are going to charity.

I want to thank Blizzard for this unexpected showing, I sure know it made me choke up a little.

Click here if you want to know more about Hulk's passing and his effect on the community, I suggest you look at the top posts of this week on /r/CompetitiveOverwatch -- most significantly this post

Can we chill out , there is no "Mass ban wave of 1 tricks"

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 08:56 AM PST

Theres atleast 2 posts on the front page now talking about some massive ban wave of 1 tricks. Stop fear mongering please.

Also remember literally anyone can make a post and say " I was never toxic in anygame ever but still banned....must be because of X" coming from the WoW community most of these claims are usually just not true. Emphasis on usually.

That is all

Edit: Damn it turns out the " I got ban for only doing X , Blizzard wrongly banned me" , turns out was a toxic troll when not given his 1trick who would of thought

Yet here we are, with onetricks getting banned.

151 hours on all heroes in 'All Modes' is now complete!

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 06:36 AM PST

Since the update to the career profile that added the 'All Modes' category, I have been working on creating another rainbow in 'All Modes'. Today I completed that goal on stream!

Double rainbow! https://gfycat.com/ShoddyPointedHuia

I've been streaming the whole thing over on my twitch.

Next up, I plan on getting 250 hours on all heroes in quick play, in addition to that, once Moira comes out, I will be playing catchup with her, and getting her to 151 hours asap.

Many thanks to all the supporters so far, the community has been great!

"I don't miss"

We need to punish toxicity, not bad choices

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 07:11 AM PST

Toxicity is not having Hanzo or Widowmaker

Toxicity is when players pick them to troll and lose on purpose

If I just want to play a character, and I lose with it,but I'm learning and getting better, and trying,I should not be banned.

It's not toxic to instapick either,it's a bad choice,but it's a choice and I respect it

This bans will just increase toxicity, people will start to not play properly and just report when their teammates pick something they don't want

If I'm in Platinum and someone is a Platinum Symmetra, there should be no reason for me to complain,we as a team should work around it,not say that he's the problem

This is a team based game, but we are playing a solo queu mode,so it's impossible to have teams always working together,so only intentional ruiners of games should be bannable, along with people that swears like crazy

IF someone only knows how to play one character to his teammates skill level,it s just plain stupid to ask him to switch,I'd rather have him on that character than having him being a Mercy that can't time her rez or a S76 that can only shoot thing when ulting

Also we need to teach this community what toxicity is,not make it dictate what toxicity is

You don't go in the street learning people to make rules, you teach them

Good behavior is good Bad behavior is not

I can see that having a top500 torb in a game of top500 tracer and mercy is a bad idea, but if it is that much it's meta's fault or poor teamwork

And we know that everything can work,as we saw almost every character in the Worlds this year,so there is no excuse for the people not trying to win anymore and just report their teammates when they instalock or one trick, because this is what this bans will make the toxic community behave

Also why should Torb switch when you don't want to switch off from dps?

If you don't know how to heal and he doesn't either, there is no "real"reason for him to switch over you,it's the best for him to switch because 2-2-2,but it's not like not following the meta or make perfect choices is toxic, acting poorly to hurt your team is,but if u just play bad,you simply should lose SR,not the right to play

In the end... One trick is a BAD CHOICE: you don't always are going to have a easy time, and your team will not work together most of the time,

BUT IT'S NOT TOXIC: You just want to play one character and try to make it work in any situation to become the best

We are being GIANT hypocrites when it comes to the banned Torb one-trick.

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 12:34 AM PST

I see a lot of support for him, coming from this super misleading phrase-

"You can't be banned for picking a certain hero."

That's not why he's banned. He's banned because he instalocks a non tank/support hero every single game, and so many players have been frustrated being his teammate the system has banned him. Every single person on this subreddit would NOT want him on their team:

  • It forces his teammates to play fill roles every game so he can "play the hero he prefers most" (his words). To me, this is SUPER inconsiderate. Most people want to play DPS.

  • It is not the best pick in all situations, especially in high elo where people understand how to counter Torb.

Why are we defending this toxic behavior online, when it frustrates all of us in-game?

EDIT: The TLDR of the feedback im getting is "Its bad behavior but shouldn't be ban-worthy." I'm in the minority that believes if you are getting consistently reported by frustrated teammates, you are definitively a bad teammate and should be punished.

EDIT#2: I didn't mean to speak for the entire subreddit, that was wrong. Obviously a lot of people have different opinions then me, I'm not trying to say my word is law. Just sharing my opinion here

Blizzard isn’t banning OTPs. Blizzard is punishing poor teamwork.

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 12:56 PM PST

For some reason, people assume that blizzard has gone against their word and decided to impose bans on people who play off meta characters.

Simply put, if you're playing a character that is heavily countered and refuse to switch, you should be reported for poor teamwork.

It's not difficult. Please stop this nonsense.

Torb is difficult to build a team around and is easily countered at higher levels. Refusing to switch is annoying and none of you in here would want to be on that team.
