Pigs will never attack you, no matter how much you brutalize them.

Zombies assault you on sight, intent on bloodying you no matter what you've done.

So what do Zombie Pigmen, the exact hybrid between these two mobs, do?

Something in between.

My thoughts on how the new water physics affect me as a builder, and a message for those in the technical community.

Posted: 24 Nov 2017 01:52 PM PST

I've been reading plenty of comments on the new upcoming water physics and I have really been bugged to speak up about how it affects me as a builder, and why I think it's a necessary change for any water-related building.

It's really frustrating that I can't use non-full blocks while building underwater, whenever I want to use some stairs and fences to add some detail to this cool base that I'm building, they always leave those unsightly air pockets wherever there are empty spaces within them. Having the water tiles be able to connect to the hitboxes of non-cube blocks is something that I've been wanting for quite a long time, you can bet that I got excited as hell when the 1.14 update was announced.

But of course, there's always these complications with adding something so radical like this. Now that the devs are going to update the water physics to give builders more options, some members of the community start raising a big hell about it, since it'll break many farms that use water mechanics to move and transport mobs and items, which believe me, I understand is a legitimate concern for technical creators, though I'll be honest, all of those anti-1.14 water comments I've been seeing over the past few days are really upsetting, since it felt like they were actively condemning a feature which I've always wanted and felt that water-related builds needed.

"Why the hell would you even want to build around water?" Have you ever heard of the lost city of Atlantis? How about things that are more relatable like pools, fountains, bridges, dams, aqueducts, tunnels, ports, harbors, ships, submarines, shipwrecks, water wheels, locks, canals, the wreck of the deepwater horizon, steampunk builds, piers, New Orleans after hurricane katrina or Houston after Harvey, and especially AQUARIUMS, all of these builds that could benefit from improved water physics and non-solid blocks.

As you can see, this opens up so many new possibilities for aesthetic builders in where they are presented with a broader palette of blocks to work from and to add detail to their builds. And also based on the new snapshot the other day, it looks like the developers are finally opening up a whole new realm for building blocks and block variations as well by removing block IDs and also giving us a "debug stick." (Which I really hope stays in the game because it is an awesome tool.)

But if the community keeps protesting against changes such as the water physics, what if the devs decide not to add such mechanics? Builders like me would lose out on posterity and be constrained to using opaque blocks for everything water-related. Though you can certainly build these epic underwater bases and things using only full blocks, you just cannot achieve that same level of depth and variation as terrestrial builds without removing those air-pockets around transparent blocks.

What is it going to be then?

How can they please both sides? Perhaps about they should create separate versions for the builders and the redstoners, Minecraft: The Totally Terrific Technical Edition TM and Minecraft: Bob's Big Bombastic Building Edition TM. That way, everybody can be satisfied by keeping the old water physics for one edition, and implementing the new physics for the other one. Because having those new physics in the same game just wouldn't work out for both groups, there is just no hope. Sorry about it sounding so pessimistic but it's unfortunately true unless the devs add something to resolve this problem. A solution to that might be something like a hydrophobic void block that keeps out water but lets entities and items through. Even Tommo said they were contemplating on something like that in his post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/7dw5bz/jeb_when_redoing_the_water_physics_please/dq13qbu/

So for technical players, PLEASE try to find solutions or innovate around the new water physics if they are implemented, I understand that it would break many concepts that you guys have created over the past few years, but I've seen that the technical community has always been able to work around such issues like these, and certainly, "changing water mechanics" shouldn't be a big reason enough for you to stop designing and innovating new farms altogether. But it's just unreasonable that me as an aesthetic builder would be held back from accessing a whole new realm of possibilities just because some others want to keep their old water mechanics.

One of my greatest ambitions is to create a great, detailed underwater base in Minecraft, but I can only use full blocks in the process of building and envisioning it, having to substitute full blocks for structures that can use transparent blocks above water. This change in water physics is HUGE for many builders like me. How can it ever happen smoothly if so many people are actively in opposition to it?

For those expecting a TL;DR. PLEASE read the whole damn thing because it's important, even essential that the community addresses the opinions and concerns of all of its different players regarding these new water physics. And I wasn't just going to sit there and not say anything now that the developers are considering implementing something I've always wanted.

Suggestion for new water physics: if fences or stairs abut on water, dummy water appears, but still block water.

Question: Will magma blocks still delete water blocks in the 1.14?

Posted: 24 Nov 2017 01:21 PM PST

While the current version is cool (where water gets randomly deleted on top of magma blocks) I'm not overly attached to the feature.

With the upcoming Bubble Streams, I'm looking forward to the different design opportunities (like big bubbling tubes in a lab). So I figured it was worth asking about it. Are there more details about that anywhere yet? Or is it too soon?

TBH, I would prefer it if the bubble stream replaces deleted-water-blocks. :D
