Announcing Official Community Discord [Learn DotA 2 Update as well]

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 08:50 AM PST

We now have a community discord at the following link:

https://discord.gg/aYGUavz

Some individuals have advertised discords in the past, like the Dota 2 Scrubs discord with our permission, but this is the first official community hub for the subreddit moderated by subreddit mods.

Additionally, this is the new home of Learn Dota 2 League and the LD2L inhouses, both of which are aimed at <3.2k players who want to experience a more competitive setting with quality games, though higher mmr players sometimes play inhouses. Join and say hi, and if you want to play with other discord members make sure to ask for a region tag! I hope to see some of you there.

Advice for new players (or any player who wants to learn something new)

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 12:16 PM PST

What I'm going to say might be frowned upon but watch account boosters streams on Twitch! Now I know what they're doing is disgusting and I hate them just as much as everyone else, but we must admit one thing, they know how to play DotA. I've been watching their streams for a couple of months (mostly one guy's stream, I don't want to advertise him here but he's a well known booster) and I must say that stuff I've seen from them have made me a better player. I also watch stuff on YouTube like Purge's clips etc., and I love that kind of content, but all the combos, tricks, builds and dirty stuff I know I've learned from Twitch boosters. If you're a 2k player and you see some 8k player stomping a game in your bracket, you'll at least get an idea of how to outplay other 2k players, I'm not saying you'll stomp like he does but your game experience will improve for sure

I'm relatively new and want to watch games through the dota client, but they are all super high MMR and I'm guessing are completely different to games at my level. How do I find lower MMR games?

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 07:39 PM PST

Is there some website that lists match IDs for a range of MMRs that I can just plug in?

Can I adjust settings within the dota client to show me lower MMR games? I think this is really important for new players to learn, because I have no idea what's happening if I can only watch pro players.

I’ve been playing since dota 1 but still suck?;(

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 12:42 PM PST

To be fair, I've never really wanted to learn.. I just played. Never watched any championships or anything like that.

Now I feel like I actually want to learn and be good at it but don't know where to begin. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Arteezy’s Morphling

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 09:23 AM PST

So, after seeing RTZ play morphling, i noticed he usually goes wand-treads-aquila-dragon lance-diffusal into whatever he needs for the game. Is this the new morphling build? When would i get eblade?

All thoughts and opinions welcome

How viable is re-calibrating on pos 4-5?

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 12:31 PM PST

I calibrated horribly when I started, 600mmr. I clawed my way to 3.2k (on a good day). I'm having seriosu stress because I'm not an 800 gpm carry player, and I don't want to go back to 1k.

Getting 1-2 reports despite not saying/doing anything?

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 08:05 AM PST

I wanted to ask if that's normal in this game. I noticed that I frequently get 1 or 2 reports in my conduct summaries even though I literally don't say anything in chat. I just don't talk in video games, I just play. And on the other hand, I have more commend than games, so I find that kind of strange.

Hotkey Questions

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 06:19 AM PST

Been thinking about reconfiguring some hotkeys. I'd like to start playing some more micro intensive heroes that require control groups, but my number keys are bound to my inventory items.

I've noticed on a LOT of pro players' streams that their items are bound to ALT+(Q,W,E and A,S,D) for their top 3 and bottom 3 inventory slots respectively. Does anybody know if that means they literally have to press the alt key on their keyboard + Q, or if that ALT is just a generic that could represent a button on their mouse?

It seems to me that I'd fuck up and use my spells if my items were bound to ALT + (Q,W,E) since I use standard key config not legacy. Especially if that literally means ALT button; it's just awkward to reach.

For players who like to play micro-intensive heroes, what are your configurations/tricks? I'd love to know.

What is a good support combo for PA?

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 07:55 AM PST

I'm pretty sure that almost any combination of a support+carry can work out if played well, though I also believe certain combos are particularly noticeable. I have played Jugg+CM a lot, which is imo a really strong laning combo, then there's the very popular Huskar+Dazzle/Oracle, Io+Tiny, Bane+Mirana, etc.

In a similar vein, are there any decent combos for PA that could at least help her secure the laning stage if not the mid(-late) game? Omni did come to mind as he does give a free BKB which is huge but i don't think he does much during the laning stage. I suppose Venge could be nice since she has a disable, armor reduction, damage aura and can do clutch saves with her ult all of which sound really for a PA.

So, Storm Spirit Blood Rush to Orchid or Kaya first?

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 02:28 AM PST

The title. Which is more effective if you are snowballing and if you aren't. I find it rushing Kaya then Bloodstone first greatly delays buying Orchid which hinders my kill potential.

What heroes are good for getting solo kills?

Posted: 16 Nov 2017 11:39 PM PST

Asking this out of curiosity. TBH I feel like I play too many split-pushy heroes (like AM, and I'm not saying I'm really good on him, I just like that playstyle) and was wondering what heroes, safe laners or mids, can reliably find solo kills around the map. I've been picking up Juggernaut a bit, and Omni almost guarantees a free kill, but without that it's a bit tricky to do much without multiple items. I also wonder if SF would be a good idea, because imo having an early item that allows him to land triple razes (force, eul's or blink) could help in being aggressive early on.

Thoughts?

With recent jungle changes: what do you play on the offlane ?

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 12:37 AM PST

Let's say someone picks a typical offlaner. What am I supposed to pick when I go duo lane with him. Do I go full support ?

Is helm of dominator a good investment on sven if he can stack ancients every minute?

Posted: 16 Nov 2017 09:57 PM PST

I'm considering Sven as the hero I can spam while calibrating. He can farm fast, deal great damage and has great abilities that can help in teamfights.

In a situation where no one can stack for him, will HoD be good?

You could skip treads and just go boots + HoD in 6-8 mins, you could put the 950 gold from treads recipe into buying the HoD and get boots of travel later so you can be more mobile and perhaps snowball more out of your great farm.

The item build would be tango > salve > mango > stout shield > qb > boots > HoD > blink and SnY > travels (if you have a big lead) > BKB > Heart or other core item

This is like the senario hat I'd like to happen.

Needs some thoughts on this. tnx.

tested it, it was bad, it was a disaster, i regretted purchasing it.

Position 5 support in pubs overrated?

Posted: 16 Nov 2017 08:59 PM PST

A majority of people agree that hard supporting in DotA is less fun than a core position (obviously not everyone). While I know that buying wards and dust is necessary, I don't understand why there can't be a more even farm distribution. If supports were allowed to take some farm and stay at about the same level as the cores, they would be much more impactful throughout the game. Especially since pubs don't play 4 protect 1 strategies, a single big carry isn't as beneficial. Would increasing the farm priority if supports help improve win rate in pubs vs those that sack the support?

I mean at low levels. It seems like carry and mids at 1-2k expect the supports to have nothing and contribute. It just seems like everyone would be better of with someone who farms more, especially after the landing stage.
