Hearthstone - Theorycrafting Thursdays Weekly Discussion

Theorycrafting Thursdays Weekly Discussion

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 04:10 PM PST

Hello members of the /r/hearthstone community,

This is a weekly thread designed for more advanced discussion regarding the intricacies of Hearthstone. Questions and answers should be focused on high-level theory crafting, such as card synergy, efficient mana drafts, and the viability of cards in certain situations.

Please keep it clean and try to add more than just a one or two word response. As the goal of this post is to increase the community's knowledge, the thought process matters as much as the answer! There is also a Newbie Tuesday weekly post, for those who wish to discuss the basics.

Note: I am a bot. Questions or feedback regarding this thread? Message the moderators.

I f*cking hate Spreading Plague

Posted: 16 Nov 2017 07:32 AM PST

I hate it so much. I swear, if any card has ever considered me to leave HS it's this one. Ever since I saw this card announced I got a bad feeling in my guts. Past turn 5 it's so stressful to play against Druid, it almost feels like a horror movie. It's so goddamn broken, what did they think?! And there are TWO of this bullshit! Just give this stupid card mana cost it deserves already, PLEASE! And I'm talking about 8 or more. I can't anymore.

Dane: Reddit Suggestion

This year Hunter will receive as many weapons as Mage, Priest, Warlock and Druid.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. What is their reason not to give him weapons?

I Just Realized How Completely Asinine Hunter's Class Design Is Becoming ...

Posted: 16 Nov 2017 05:13 AM PST

So we all know by now that Hunter's core kit is slowly turning into a meme, with Starving Buzzard (I don't blame anybody for forgetting that thing exists at this point :P) being such a steaming pile of shit that it permanently cripples Hunter's draw options as a Basic card (and therefore any hopes of a viable control archetype), and its early game being so hopelessly outmatched by the Pirate kit, token spam, and just AoE in general that the only class permanently stuck with a 2-ping Hero Power is inexplicably one of the weakest Aggro options available ...

The thing is, I was recently glancing though the card file to theorycraft some way of staying relevant on Ladder, and decided to start digging through older cards to make sure I hadn't overlooked an obscure clutch inclusion or something.

Lo and behold, I came across Princess Huhuran, and immediately noticed something strange: the card's effect is literally the exact same as Terrorscale Stalker's. In other words, what was once considered a "Legendary-caliber" ability is suddenly banal enough to be found on a class Rare, with both cards being released closely enough to inhabit the very same Standard rotation. My memory's not great, but I'm 99% sure this is the only time wherein a (class!) Legendary's effect has simply been transplanted onto a card so accessible that it's even likely to pop up multiple times in Arena drafts alone, with no explanation forthcoming from Brode & Co. whatsoever :\

More to the point, what exactly are we forking over 1,600 Dust to nab the Princess for, then? The Beast tag? A 6/5 body? While some classes get game-defining superstars like Fandral and Lightlord, is the one class supposedly centered around synergy across class and Neutral creatures (Warlock honestly works off class Demons alone) meant to be content with a Legendary whose design space is upstaged by a Rare 3/3 for 3?

I'd like to take a moment to clarify something: I am not one of those hyper-Aggro zealots bitching about how my precious Ranked games are suddenly increasing in duration from 15 seconds to 30 (I'm no Pirate Warrior after all ;D). My favorite Hunter card of all time is actually Houndmaster, and the highest I've ever reached on the Ranked ladder was with Mech Hunter, back before the Standard format existed and Metaltooth Leaper was treated like a meme (for whatever reason, incidentally; that thing was a fucking murderer!).

This actually brings me to another point: it's strange how much "meme-hate" we took over the years from people sick of hyper-aggro shenanigans, even while much worse offenders like Aggro Shaman and Pirate Warrior did things with the mana curve that we could only dream of. Even if those psycho archetypes didn't exist though, was the burden really on Hunters to move away from the very game plan that our own Hero Power yelled out in bold letters? Is our class's inherent marriage to a 2-damage clock now simply our fault, forcing us to (purchase and) play a 6-cost, 1-of diceroll Legendary every single game just to avoid offending other decent people on the internet? (By the way yes, the whole Undertaker fiasco was disgusting; I honestly felt too greasy to even play the deck back then, and actually never touched the Ladder until it blew over because of how ridiculously one-dimensional the draw-RNG coinflips had become anyway.)

At this point I feel like I've ranted enough to just start throwing my conspiracy theories out there: I think Hunter's current cob-webbed state is basically the end result of preliminary years of bitching they'd heard from bundle-purchasing, Legendary-enamored noobs who'd walk blindly into even a moderately-tuned Aggro list when starting out, and get insta-wiped by like a double-Kill Command on turn 6 or whatever. Panicked by the mass unease of potential whales and the impending loss of revenue, Blizzard probably tossed the Undertaker and Starving Buzzard nerfs out there without really worrying about what to replace the ensuing void with (I have a strong feeling Hunter's been the darling of F2P players since Day 1, i.e. the least "financially damaging" to simply cripple in this manner), and let this disparity remain long after other classes had clearly (and obscenely) exploited the Aggro archetype in Rexxar's stead. In other words, what we're experiencing today just feels like the logical result of initially accessible Aggro archetypes within the F2P marketplace, and subsequent developer "punishment" after then and ever since.

TL,DR: With the permanent obsolescence of Starving Buzzard, the inescapable "Aggro mindset" of the Hero Power, and overall lack of "archetypal staying power" in any particular direction, Hunter is gradually morphing into some sort of weird, F2P training-class that really only prepares you for piloting the true champions of any given archetype (even Druid could pull off a better Beast package!) once you actually stack up the Dust. This is insulting to the hundreds of thousands of people who've surely put money into experimenting broadly with the class (I'm actually theorycrafting Carnassa myself at the moment), and thus the onus IMO is on Blizzard to move Hunter's identity away from whatever noodle-soup mentality is driving the design at this point in time, and either change the Hero Power completely or improve its Aggro capabilities whilst simultaneously releasing more Neutral control options etc. that can deal with the resulting power spike.

Welp, looks like I finally blurted out all I had to say these last few months. Time to wallow in my first-world problems a bit more now :|

Cheers, all

Edit: To avoid painting myself as one of those random "bitch & moan" types, I'll leave you guys with a question: how would you fix Hunter's problems today? Introduce an heir to Glaivezooka? Adopt Warlock's self-damaging "stat tax" (Pit Lord et al.) in exchange for more durable minions? Lend Hunter a class equivalent of Secretkeeper?

Please discuss :D

Edit 2: This is one of my favorite posts in the entire thread. It speaks a lot to how even a little bit of simplicity can go a long, long way when it comes to CCGs, and Blizzard would be wise to take notes; honestly, would a complete class overhaul be so bad at some point, guys? Surely your Small Indie Company™ has the resources to pull it off? :|

Edit 3: I'm glad to have struck a chord with a portion of the playerbase via this post. My currently unemployed self will make it a personal mission to reply to everybody at some point, but in the meantime I think Blizzard should be more receptive to every single player enjoying Hearthstone, not just the oh-so-important whales who actually wouldn't have much of a playerbase to show up to if F2P faithfuls weren't slogging away all the while ... hopefully KnC holds some long-awaited surprised for all of us furries though eh :P

Looking for a guy I met at a Fireside gathering with the username "DaTodd" who frequents this subreddit?

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 11:20 AM PST

Hi, I'm posting this on behalf of my partner!

About two weeks ago I attended my first Fireside Gathering at Edinburgh Napier and met a cool guy with the username "DaTodd". He unfortunately had to leave early and I forgot to get his full battletag before he left. My battletag is "Grizz" and I am hard to forget as I was the blonde amputee. Any Reddit detectives on who can help me out? Thanks so much!

Title. Type hearthstone and then use the first word of your phones autofill till you get a repeating word or feel like stopping. Seems like a fun idea.

Is it just me or "Your Opponent" with no rank bug started happening very frequently?

Posted: 16 Nov 2017 02:17 AM PST

Before I used to see it and think it was a glitch and no big deal. Used to happen once or twice a month. As of recently it has been happening like once or twice a day. Is it just me or?
