Newbie Tuesdays Weekly Discussion

Posted: 27 Nov 2017 04:10 PM PST

Hello members of the /r/hearthstone community,

This is part of a series of weekly threads aimed at both new and old players from the community. It is designed so that everybody may ask any and all questions regarding the game's mechanics, decks, strategies and more.

Please keep it clean and try to add more than just a one or two word response. As the goal of this post is to increase the community's knowledge, the thought process matters as much as the answer! There is also a Theorycrafting Thursday weekly post, for those who wish to discuss some of the more intricate aspects of the game.

Sticky Threads and Guides - Great resources for new players!

Note: I am a bot. Questions or feedback regarding this thread? Message the moderators.

The reason hearthstone feels so expensive is not because tier 1 decks are expensive

Posted: 28 Nov 2017 03:42 AM PST

The problem is that you want to try out something fun or gimmicky but you can not because it cost about as much as a meta deck. I noticed that when I saw cataclym and was like maybe discardlock could be fun in the expansion but then I realised that I would need 3 legendaries and 2 epics that that I am never going to be able to use in any other deck.

In physical card games that does not happen because you can get the cards that do not see play in meta deck for a cheap price through the secondary market.

Since there is no secondary market in hearthstone I think it would be a good idea if epics and legendaries would get discounted if the ratio between beeing crafted and beeing disenchanted falls below a certain level.

If according to Blizzard dungeon mode has no rewards because they didn't want people to feel forced to play it, why do we have to suffer through quests for classes we don't have good cards for?

Posted: 28 Nov 2017 08:22 AM PST

Against people playing fully loaded decks in casual. Hypocrisy much?

What about people feeling like they have to play arena even if they hate it?

FYI: When someone befriends you to tell you to kill yourself then removes you as a friend, the chat is still in the social tab of Battle.net. You can still respond there or report them.

Not sure if people were aware of this, but when someone adds you to tell you to kill yourself or shout racism at you and then I friend you, the chat is still in the social tab of Battle.net. Even if they are no longer your friend you can still respond there or report them there.

Whatever happened to Fullas Games?

Posted: 28 Nov 2017 07:54 AM PST

His Youtube, Facebook and Twitter have all been inactive for over half a year, with seemingly no explanation. Curious whether anyone knows what happened, whether he's okay etc?

I really like the triple card reveals!

Posted: 27 Nov 2017 01:28 PM PST

I think it's a very nice way to show off some (basic) synergies and the community does not immediately jump to the conclusion that one card is useless and unplayable - imo it spreads a more positive vibe thoughout the subreddit!

keep it up team 5, thx!

I get why the reward for dungeon run should be a cosmetic, but I wish the reward was an alternate hero and not a cardback.

Posted: 27 Nov 2017 08:38 PM PST

I thought giving Arthas for beating the Lich King with all classes was a pretty smart move, but it kind of sucks that dungeon run won't have a similar sort of reward. I get that dungeon run is really all about the gameplay and having fun, but a cardback is kind of lame in my opinion. Well that's my opinion at least.

Peter Whalen Twitter responses of Lynessa Sunsorrow

Posted: 28 Nov 2017 01:27 AM PST

Is Voraxx interact with Lynessa (Buffing Voraxx triggers Lynessa's battlecry twice)? Thx!

No, should only trigger it once

for the new paladin legendary are spells cast on it in the order they were played? Or random? Also will the spells she casts on herself count towards the paladin quest?

Random order, but usually doesn't matter. Her extra spells don't count for the paladin quest.

If her battlecry is triggered buffing randomly(According to your previous tweet,) and if the player uses the Dinosize spell, how is she gonna be? The value of her is going to be random?

Yes

nagging reminder that we NEED a better history tab that shows milled cards

Posted: 27 Nov 2017 10:29 AM PST

alt tabbed for a second to look if there were any new cards released and came back to 2 oracles played and the last bit of the milled "card burned" animation. 2 cards gone and no clue what they were. If youre going to make a card that can overdraw me that much blizz, its unacceptable to not have it show me what those cards were.

yes i have a deck tracker so it wasnt impossible to figure out what the cards were but in a game praised for its intuitive, pick up and play style, this is such a gross oversight its amazing.

and yes, i know this exact same post has been made countless times, but i havent seen in for a while so im keeping the nag up so blizz might finally fix it. sorry if its annoying.

Props to blizzard for removing regular commons as arena rewards. I have more gold saved up than ever thanks tho this change.

Posted: 28 Nov 2017 05:50 AM PST

I play arena almost exclusively. In between expansions I do around 150 arena runs (usually 1 a day, sometimes more than 1) and normally by the time the next expansion rolls around, my gold count is exactly where it was at the start of the last expansion.

However, thanks largely to blizzard removing regular commons as an arena reward, I'm getting much more gold per run. My gold count going into the next expansion is 2500 gold higher than it was at the start of KFT.

My average win rate is around 6 in arena. I track it and it's barely changed since last expansion.

Edit: You can still get common cards as a reward for arena runs with 2 wins or less. Previously though you could get non-golden common cards as a reward for any run, even ones with 12 wins.

Hearthstone: Sands of Time, a 120-Card Fan-Made Expansion

Posted: 27 Nov 2017 11:06 AM PST

Greetings, /r/hearthstone!

I've been involved in the custom hearthstone community for a decent chunk of time, starting a few years ago at hearthpwn where I entered custom class competitions (you may remember my Bard class from a while ago, but probably not). Since then, I have become extremely active in the /r/customhearthstone Discord, building a bot for the server in addition to designing cards as usual.

While I have been designing for a while, this is my first (almost) full-size expansion. I think it turned out pretty well, so I thought I'd share it here! Sands of Time explores Time Travel, Dimensional Rifts, the Bronze and Infinite Dragonflights, and what happens when people from all across spacetime find themselves in an inn playing cards against each other.

I'm not going to spend too much time in this post talking about the design of my expansion. The reason for this is that, as well as making the expansion itself, I also recorded my process in extreme detail on a google doc. It contains some general information about the direction, themes, and goals of the expansion, followed by a relatively in-depth description of my reasoning behind the design of every single card in the set. So, you can skip straight to the cards, or take a more in-depth look if you're interested.

So, if you're wondering how I came up with Oasis Spirit's effect, or why Nexus-King Salhadaar seems to be an exact copy of an existing card, or more likely, who in their right mind would design Awaken the Ancients and call it balanced, go check out that card's entry on the Design Doc!

Well, without further ado...

Hearthstone: Sands of Time Album

Hearthstone: Sands of Time Design Doc

Mobile Friendly Card-by-Card Albums:

Rogue

Priest

Paladin

Druid

Warlock

Warrior

Shaman

Hunter

Mage

Neutrals

Thanks for taking the time to stop by! If you enjoyed the set and have a few particular favorite cards, feel free to leave a comment. And if you didn't enjoy the set because you think the balance or design is totally out of wack, please let me know so I can work towards improving!

See you guys next time,

~DKP (aka 'birb' from the customhearthstone Discord)

EDIT: Thank you for my first gold, kind stranger! I'm glad that I could earn it by sharing something I truly loved doing. <3

Remember that starter bundle of 10 Classic packs and a Legendary? Why not have a Starter Bundle for every expansion?

Posted: 27 Nov 2017 10:43 AM PST

Seriously, what does Blizzard have to lose for doing so? If anything, I can only see them benefiting from it. People like me who will never spend real money on this otherwise would actually be tempted to spend more money. That starter bundle was the literal first time I've spent real money on this game, and I've been playing since beta.

Blizzard, think about it. Seriously. Think of all the people like me that you would tempt into throwing money at you if you introduced starter bundles for every expansion, past and future expansions. Imagine if there were 500,000 more people like me that refuse to spend money on this game, but were finally tempted to do so when purchasing that Classic bundle.

The people who already pre-purchase the new expansion will continue to pre-purchase expansions. People who already spend money on the game are still going to spend money. Whales will be whales, regardless of you guys making a Starter Bundle for every expansion.

The work it takes to implement such a thing is faaaaaar less that the work require to make a physical representation of said starter bundles and having to ship them to retailers.

Honestly, what does Blizzard lose by doing so? I refuse to spend money on this game, with the exception of those bundles. And if I'm like there, the chances of there being similar-minded people in the player base is very high.

So hey. Blizzard.Pleeeease do it. Give me and these probably hundreds of thousands of other people an excuse to give you money. Because honestly, what does it cost you guys to make a little starter bundle for every expansion? Would it really cost more than what you would gain from us buying it?

Edit #1: Ah, I keep using the term 'starter bundle' but when I look back at it again, Hearthstone calls it the 'Welcome Bundle'. Regardless a 'Welcome bundle/Starter Bundle' for each expansion would be really neat.

Edit #2: The welcome bundle (10 Classic packs + 1 Classic Legendary) is 4.99. There's 9 sets (Including Classic and the upcoming Kobolds). So if each set had a $4.99 welcome bundle, that would mean I'd pay roughly 44.91 (Lets pretend tax doesn't exist). So that's $44.91 from me alone. But now lets pretend that 500,000 players in the community went ahead and all did the exact same thing. What's 44.91 times 500,000? 22,455,000.

That is a pretty nice gain for Blizzard. That's not even the correct amount, that's technical lower since tax isn't being applied in my math. Blizzard. Look at that. You can't say that its not worth giving each set a Welcome bundle. Even if say, half that number of players bought it, you're still looking at roughly 11,227,500 bucks.

Latest Tavern Brawl 'Decks Assemble' should be a permanent mode.

Posted: 27 Nov 2017 06:56 PM PST

Live deckbuilding mode in Hearthstone! IMO this tavern brawl is by far the most creative and enjoyable, to the point that it is set apart from all other tavern brawls. With 38 wins, it is by far my most played brawl (as a relatively casual player). It acts as a stand-alone mode of play and has the complexity and strategy to be entertaining for many hours. It also changes significantly as cards cycle, which would keep it fresh into the future. Anyone else feel similar here? Shall we petition blizzard?!
