The true cost of getting free stuff in Hearthstone Posted: 05 Aug 2017 04:35 AM PDT There have been several cool events giving out free cards and coins in Hearthstone and we are all very happy about that. Free Legendaries, Arena Runs, Double gold, no more duplicate legendaries, free Volcanosaur and Fight Promoter, ... (Ok some of you were not happy about Fight Promoter but I thought it was nice. Not that I ever played her though) But let's not forget why Blizzard became so generous this year: Adventures were replaced by Expansions - and Expansions were very good value and gave you lots of cards - including many Legendaries - for less coins or real money than you'd get in the Expansions (more on that below). This is why I gathered some data and juggled some numbers to find out how much we gained by pussibly getting more stuff - and how much we've lost by having to pay more to get all cards. So how much more expensive did Hearthstone get by that? For this we will first look at the total cost of owning a full collection in a Hearthstone year and then compare it to the amount of free stuff we get. I know, I know hardly anyone is aiming for a full collection but it is representative for the total cost and the cost of experiencing a certain percentage of all he game has to offer. I will make some other simplifications, like assuming that 100 dust = 100 gold = 1 pack If you are not interested in the details, you can skip to the summary and TL;DR below. In the early years of the game, Expansions and Adventures would alterate, meaning on average a year would have 1,5 Expansion and 1,5 Adventures. And I thing that was a really good balance. (For newbies: In Expansions you can aquire the usually about 132 cards only by opening card packs. In Adventures you can unlock single player chapters/levels by buying them with in-game or real world currency and are guaranteed the reward if you successfully play through the levels - 30-45 cards total) Expansions cost(ed) 2800 coins or 20-25 USD for all of their cards but you first have to unlock them by beating the single player bosses. It's not super hard though. Getting a full set of cards from one Expansion requires about 260 or 280 card packs, as other redditors calculated. That puts all of the cards in an Expansion at a price of 26 000 coins or around 300 USD (depending of your local currency, the latest price adjustments might have hit you pretty hard to, because they grew reaker in relation to the US-Dollar) That means in the old release cycle of alternating years with an average of 1,5 Expansions and 1,5 Adventures that puts the full collection at 43 200 coins. per year or 488$ (33$ for 1,5 Adventures plus 455$ on Expansions, assuming no free stuff). This meant that if you really play a lot it might have even been possible to maintain a full collection while f2p but you had to win 30 games and do your daily quests almost every day (5-9 hours/day). If you decided to pay for content you could for example buy the adventures and 40 packs for 50 USD (108 $ in the averaged year) and together with free stuff and daily quests you could have a really good card collection and play most of the decks you'd like to try. Now the total cost of 3 Expansions is 3*260 packs = 780 packs = 78 000 gold ~ over 900 USD - about twice as much as before. (A random thing I found out, by the way is that your account can only hold a maximum of 20 000 gold at a time) Adventures were really good deals for both f2p and p2p If you bought the Adventures with real money, you saved 2800 coins instead - you could argue that it's then as if you bought 28 packs for 20 USD or 0,71$/pack - 61% of what you'd otherwise have to pay in the biggest bundle. Or another comparison: The 15 pack bundle costs also 20$ but with an expansion you get 86% more cards. So now let's factor in the increase of free stuff we get this year: Un'Goro: Before Un'Goro we got a streak of Daily Login rewards. The total value of which was equivalent to 6 packs plus a Golden Volcanosaur and later after some time a surprize Fight Promoter. You probably wouldn't have crafted the Volcanosaur in golden, but let's calculate generously and value him at 800 Free Fight Promoter - assuming you would have never crafted the card - 100 dust. But since we wanted to evaluate the cost of a full collection, let's assume you had to craft her and value the promotion at 400. Total: 1800 (800 if you disenchanted the bonus cards) Midsummer Fire Festival - 14 days of double gold from daily quests - about 700 coins but let's assume we were lucky in re-rolling them and say 60*14=840 Ahune's Frost Festival - 3 free Arena runs: Three times 50 coins, Un'Goro Pack and a Frozen Throne Pack = 250 coins but Arena runs also give higher rewards so let's say 70 coins. In total 270*3=810 Since you might have used your Fire Festival coins for more Arena Runs, the 840 become 950. 1 free legendary for the Frozen Throne single player Missions = 1600 dust (I could also value it as 400 if it's a useless one but let's not be so negative). Guraranteed Legendary in the first 10 packs. Let's simplify the calculation and say normal drop rate is 1/20 and here it's 1/10 (actually higher). So usually your first 10 packs would have given you half a legendary, now you get one so that's 800 coins extra. Total: 4160 I will ignore packs for betting on a winner of competitions because it's inconsistent and they were awarded before the change of release cycle and will still be awarded in the future, so make little difference in the comparison. Also in the old cycle, before the release of a new Expansion a few packs were given out to players -often as special quests. Total bonus stuff in the old release cycle: Goblins vs. Gnomes: 3 Packs The Grand Tournament: I don't know. If you do, please tell me Old Gods: 13 Free Packs, Bonus C'Thun and Beckoner of Evil. (Maybe they gave us more because there were no free packs in TGT?) Gadgetzan: 6 free packs On average almost 6 packs per Expansion. Adventures gave no such bonuses. New release cycle: Un'Goro: Equivalent of 6 packs (plus Volcanosaur see above) Knights of the Frozen Throne: Not fully known yet. Single player missions reward (1 random legendary plus possibly some card packs). We don't know all the KFT rewards yet but let's assume it's equivalent to 6 packs and a free legendary for missions and guaranteed legendary in the first 10 packs for 4600 and the fire/frost festivals for a total of 6360 A few more numbers we will need later on: Adventure total disenchant value Karazhan: 2950 LoE: 3171 Blackrock: 2590 Naxxramas: 3140 Average: 2962 Arcane Dust for 20-25$ 131,6 dust/USD Daily quests and daily wins They also changed a little over the years but let's assume a comitted player who plays an hour a day. They do their daily quests, get some coins for winning games in ranked mode, play a few Arena runs on the weekend and make an average of maybe 70 coins per day. They do either just that (f2p) or spend additional money on packs or Arena runs but that's about 25 550 gold per year (255 packs). They did so in the old release cycle and will continue in the new. Time for the final comparison: Old release cycle: Total cost: 43 200 gold Free promotions: 900 gold (1,5*600) Daily stuff if you play a lot: 25 550 gold Missing: 15 350 New release cycle: Cost 78 000 coins Free stuff: (Assuming we get something similar like pre-KFT for every future Expnsion, which I'm not so sure of): 6360*3=19080 Daily stuff if you play a lot: 25 550 gold Missing: 33 370 So the total value that a frequent player is short of the full collection is now twice as high as it used to be before What if we bought Expansions with Expansions: 1,167$ per pack~98,25 dust, 0,233$ per card. 84,19 dust/USD Adventures give 56% more Dust per Dollar. TL;DR: No matter if you buy content with real money or in game currency: In the new release cycle you get much less for what you spend. You got the equivalent of a few thousand coins more than in the old release cycle but that is contrasted by an increase of the total price of the annual collection by several hundred thousand Expansions give only 64% of the Dust per Dollar value compared to Adventures. (Adventures 131,6 dust/$ and Expansions 84,2) This, and the fact that they could be bought by f2p players and gave them access to all the cards was presumably the reason for the Blizzard bean counters to change it and make a game that already sees sales of several hundred million dollars a year, even more expensive. If you only want to comment to say "Hur, dur you think you are entitled to free stuff, shut up" - please don't. It adds nothing of value to the discussion and the whole point is that even when you put money in the game you get way less than you did in the old release cycle with Adventures. If I missed something important, feel free to tell me I wrote a little more but put it in the comments because honestly this is already way too long. Look for my P.S: (press control+f to find it) [link] [comments]

There needs to be another round of bans on terrible Arena class cards this expansion. Posted: 05 Aug 2017 06:05 AM PDT While I love the vast majority of the cards revealed so far from a constructed play perspective, a lot of these are simply some of the shittiest Arena class cards ever printed. Treachery, Play Dead, Glacial Mysteries, Ice Breaker, Leeching Poison, Ice Fishing, and don't forget the worst by far: the newly announced 3 mana 3/6 for Warlock that discards up to 6(!) cards from your hand. Every single one of these is basically unplayable in the Arena format, and the worst part is, most of them are Common. And on top of these new KFT draft-ruiners, classes like Warrior are still putting up with cards like Iron Hide from previous expansions. Please, Blizzard. You don't even need to purge every bad card, just the ones for classes that wind up being underpowered post-release. The community reacted pretty favorably to the original Karazhan Arena card bans, so this seems like a no-brainer. [link] [comments]

Since Blizzard gave support to Raza Priest, can Krulock get support too? Posted: 05 Aug 2017 04:02 AM PDT I'm a heavy highlander deck player. My challenge was to kinda make the 3 highlander decks available works and it was very fun albeit not being that strong. The real issues i had was the Krul Warlock deck because i couldn't heal and there is not enough good demons... Blizzard tried to push too hard the discard mechanic on Warlock and that really limited the demons available to put in the deck. So let's hope the last reveal will show some love at that deck, the lifesteal cards will help but a good demon will be interesting! [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Aug 2017 12:48 AM PDT Hey all, I was a little hesitant to share this at the end of last season because it was such a unique deck, and I was overly proud of my accomplishment. I want to share my variation of dragon rogue (yes!) that got me to legend. Shadowstep x1 Backstab x2 Mistress of Mixtures x2 Netherspite Historian x2 Bloodmage Thalnos x1 Eviscerate x2 Faerie Dragon x2 Wild Pyromancer x1 Doomsayer x2 Edwin Van Cleef x1 Fan of Knives x2 Shaku the Collector x1 Tar Creeper x2 Defender of Argus x2 Xaril x1 Vile Spineslayer x2 Book Wyrm x2 Primordial Drake x2 It wasn't easy. I won 367 games out of 722 from rank 5ish when I starter counting. Took me most of the month. A solid just above 50% win rate. It helps that I have 3200 wins on Rogue and I have been theorycrafting for a long time. If anyone has questions feel free to send em my way. [link] [comments] |
