Fallout - In my opinion, Fallout 4 had the best art style of the series

In my opinion, Fallout 4 had the best art style of the series

say what you want about fallout 4, the lack of rpg mechanics, and the somewhat lackluster story, but fallout brings some new color to the series. fallout 3 and nv worked as a wasteland in terms of graphics, but fallout 4 nailed the retro-futuristic look of the 1950's.

What criticisms do you have for Fallout 1 and 2 (if any)?

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 10:54 AM PDT

I made a thread similar to this one in r/ElderScrolls awhile back, so I thought I would make one for this subreddit as well! OK, so Fallout 1 and 2 are regarded as the best games in the series, and get plenty of praise, but I want to flip things around. So, what criticisms do you have for these two games? Personally, I think the first few hours of these games kinda suck. Fallout 1 has that fucking timer which I despise (Its pretty forgiving, thankfully. I still hate timers in any video game though). However, once you get the water chip to your vault, the game gets MUCH better. To be honest, if they didn't patch out the second timer (which is the mutant invasion in 500 days IIRC), I probably wouldn't even beat the game. When you have a game that has a metric fuck ton of side content, its kinda hard to admire and enjoy said content when the game nags you to fucking rush the whole way through the game.

In Fallout 2, the combat is kinda shit for the first few hours, but gets much better once you get your first gun. Maybe this wouldn't be a problem if I was a melee or unarmed build, but because I wasn't, the game was a complete fucking drag for the first few hours. Also, you don't have to give criticism that applies to both games equally. It can be criticism about either game, or both!

Edit: this might piss some people off, but I think that while it does get better as you progress, the combat is a tad bit TOO hard. Look, I like turn based combat. I love the XCOM games. But the combat in this game is a bastard. In almost every battle im in, I feel like im underpowered and overwhelmed. Now some might argue "well thats the point! Your just a vault dweller, not some mutant slaying badass", and I can understand this from a STORY standpoint, but from a GAMEPLAY standpoint, it just isn't that fun to me. You wanna know another turn based combat game that was hard? XCOM ufo defense and XCOM EU (yes, I know XCOM eu is a far newer game than fallout 1 and 2, im just using it as an example). These two games are HARD, but whenever I lost a battle, I wasn't mad because I could understand WHY. Maybe my positioning was bad, my squad should've had better equipment, I got to blood thristy ETC. when I die in Fallout 1/2, most of the time, I feel like I lost simply because I was put into bullshit circumstances or because I got bum rushed by a group of enemies. I know someone is gonna say "but your comparing a turn based strategy game to a western RPG. Are you high?". Guys, im only comparing THE COMBAT, not the stories, not the art styles, not the characters or anything else. For a turn based strategy game, Fallout 1 and 2 could've been better. it might've worked better as an RTS rather than TBS if you ask me. This is much more of a personal gripe than objective criticism, but I thought I would throw this out there.

What are the main 4 things you would change about fallout 4?

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 10:43 AM PDT

It's cool if you like the game, it does have it's positives but I thought of instead of blindly hating on the game I would like to know what others would like to see changed, for me it was: 1. The players backstory, I am cool with the pre war origins but instead of giving the player a spouse and child I would have liked to see the story just start with you being thawed out 2. The story, instead of finding shawn I think it would have benefited more from the politics of the factions, much like New Vegas I was really hoping the Commonwealth would be somwhat rebuilt much like the wasteland in the west coast 3. The voiced protagonist, just give us more dialogue choices 4. The opening quest, because we fight a death claw and get power armor way too early in the game, mid game would have been fine.

What would you change?

We know Bethesda see this page, so lets help them out, what features would you like to see in the next Fallout?

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 02:43 PM PDT

I personally would like to see a more in depth settlement system and the ability to create your own faction.
Possibly the ability to build a settlement anywhere on the map (unless that area is an "essential" area used for quests ect...

Started replaying Fallout 4 a year and a half after a very underwhelming playthrough at launch, and to my surprise, I found probably my favorite area from any Fallout game.

Posted: 02 Aug 2017 06:16 PM PDT

That area is General Atomics Galleria. I had never even heard of it before and have never seen anyone talk about it on this sub, which I read through fairly consistently.

I discovered this area while just walking around, and found it very amusing when I discovered this little shopping center completely run by pre war robots. They are all oblivious to the war even happening. They ask for cash instead of caps. The diner robot thinks the skeletons in the booths are just really enthusiastic customers who never want to leave. The bakery robot has been calling for the same few order numbers for 200 years, and you can find order number pages scattered around the building. The coffee shop robot apologizes and tells you their food has unfortunately expired. The department store robot gives you a product tour and praises the functionality and reliability of their robots, as the floor models literally explode and fall lifeless behind him. You can even convince them you are their supervisor if you find the General Atomics employee ID in the GA Factory on the East coast of the city.

My favorite moment was walking into Madden's, the gym. When you walk in a robot calls for you to step into a boxing ring to box with "the champ", a robot named Champ. And you actually go in and box with him. If you attack him with anything but your fists, the entire town turns hostile. But if you keep punching him to the point where he dies, the robot outside the ring declares, "It looks like we have a new champ!" and says Champ is feeling a little under the weather (as he lays destroyed on the floor). I had a moment of childlike amusement at this, and I actually had to put my controller down to laugh in surprised that that had even just happened.

It's moments like this that make me love Fallout, and I had previously dismissed Fallout 4 without giving it a fair chance. I'm actually thoroughly enjoying it now.

Has anyone else had any moments like this, from any Fallout game? I'm interested to hear if there are any that I haven't seen yet.

Why are Ferals in the Commonwealth hanging around graveyards?

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 02:46 PM PDT

They're mutated humans, so unless Bethesda decided to add actual zombies to the game they shouldn't have any reason to be there.

What mutated creature from the fallout series you HATE the most?

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 12:35 PM PDT

I HATE Cazadors. They've killed me so many times. They are fast as fuck, Scary as fuck, They don't take special damage on their head, they can poison you and they attack you in swarms. Fuck them.

The Railroad should have stopped ghoul bigotry, rather than synth slavery.

Posted: 02 Aug 2017 10:18 PM PDT

As the title suggests, I think the Railroad faction would have been better utilized if they had fought as a pro-ghoul organization. It's no secret that Ghouls' are treated differently from normal humans. Diamond City persecutes them, and people's responses to them can range from snide jabs, to downright attacks on ghouls. The Railroad might even become likeable(?). They could have been an anarchist type faction against the BOS and Institute. It still fits in quite a bit in the story if you think about the BOS and Maxson's goals to erradicate all non-humans in the Commonwealth. The Railroad could be a bit more of an "extremist" faction. They would utilize guerrilla tactics to perform hit and and run attacks on BOS outpost, (guerrilla attacks are implied, but never seen or utilized in the game) along with some sabotage on their Paper Planes. It would also make it more feasible that the other factions could then beat the comparatively OP BOS, as they would be weakened from strikes from hidden enemies. If you wanted to make them a bit more dangerous, than you could have them attack Diamond City because of their whole ghoul persecution thing. If Bethesda REALLY wanted to make them have some connection to the Institute, then you could have them capture synths under the guise of a "Freedom for Synths" organization, and just reprogram them to act as agents. Make it a human/synth/ghoul faction, but keep them in the shadows. It makes a hell of a lot more sense for almost all the endings then. The BOS, while very powerful, would be significantly weaker from attacks on important bases of operations, and they can't rush a base that they can't find. So either the Institute takes down the previously weakened BOS, the Railroad takes down factions from the shadows, the BOS persevere because Power Armor, or the Minuteman launch quick attacks on inattentive enemies. TL;DR Railroad=terrorists (I guess) BOS gets weakened, Institute or Minutemen can pick up the scraps. (FYI English is not my first language, so sorry for any grammar issues)

Custom Acrylic Fallout "Cleveland" Sign

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 03:27 PM PDT

Image Gallery

I just finished making a custom Fallout sign. I took inspiration from an image of a Fallout New Vegas billboard and a design I saw that was offered as a limited edition item. I wanted one so I made it myself. Instead New Vegas I made it Cleveland, which is where I'm from. I'm sure if there's a Wasteland there's a Cleveland.

I annotated the pictures in the Imgur album; read there for some details on the build. Hope you all like!

I just want to say that naming a military camp "Forlorn Hope" seems like a terrible idea. Both definitions don't exactly boost moral.

Starting my first New Vegas survival build, looking to be a smooth talking stealth character

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 04:48 AM PDT

I always say "oh this play through is gonna be different" but I always end up going small guns/heavy armor/medicine/low speech. I finally want to try survival mode and I want to be able to talk my way out of situations rather than shooting out of them.is there a good build exactly for this?

Favorite DLC from Each Game

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 09:02 AM PDT

What is your favorite DLC from each of the Fallout games? From Fallout 3 mine is definitely Operation Anchorage. There were some cool weapons and the armor at the end is amazing. I also liked fighting the dirty commies. Moving on to Fallout: New Vegas my favorite was Lonesome Road. There were some cool creatures and I liked the story the best. It wrapped up the DLC nicely. And finally, my favorite Fallout 4 DLC was Far Harbor. I loved the setting and story.

TIL a trick to give your FO4 companion infinite carry weight

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 08:32 AM PDT

you know how you can point to an object and tell them to pick it up? turns out theyll still pick it up even when it says they cant carry any more. youre not going to want to use this trick for every little thing because it takes them a good few seconds to pick things up, but if youve got a heavy object or just a few things youre loathe to part with, its pretty useful. wish i would have discovered this sooner and not 100+ hours in lol.

Fallout new vegas or fallout 4 mod suggestion

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 11:36 AM PDT

The mod would take place in the Mojave wasteland. This is before the first battle of Hoover dam from fallout new vegas. You have the rangers, Caesars legion, brotherhood of steel, Joshua Graham, Ulysses, etc. You should be able to choose your own faction, climb through ranks, but start out as a neutral member so you have a choice of picking sides. I think this mod would be great since a lot of people loved the new vegas gameplay.
