full list of overused commentary clichés

Posted: 11 Jul 2017 10:20 AM PDT

inspired by bad moon rising 2 i decided to compile a list of all of the most overused cliches used in commentary. i have also made a bingo board out of this that you can check out here so you can host super cool melee viewing parties with lots of alcohol and play bingo:

bingo drinking game

  1. (whenever someone is down a stock) "he needs this stock to come back"

  2. (whenever someone is down a stock pt 2) "it's still doable"

  3. (whenever someone is up a stock) "he has SO much momentum right now"

  4. (whenever westballz is playing) "you know, contrary to popular belief, westballz is actually a very DEFENSIVE player" "wow really i did not hear that before" -> someone who has heard that before

  5. "Nice (move)"

  6. (whenever someone is playing ice climbers and nana dies) "you know, chudat is one of the best sopos alongside fly amanita, let's see what he can do"

  7. "He read him like a (reference to anything literature related)"

  8. "oops! Commentator's curse haHahhahaHha oOpS!"

  9. "One stock is not a lead!"

  10. (whenever someone gets hit by fox up-b) "sakurai!!" "-forced laughter from other guy-"

  11. "you know, (move) has only (made up frame data) amount of frames" "wow really?" -> doesn't seem right but won't contest it for the sake of the stream

  12. (whenever a falcon is behind) "but you know, falcon can take a HIT"

  13. (character gets hit off stage and is about to die) "ohhhhh that's it" (character lives) "omg he lived!"

  14. (any ditto) "this matchup is SO volatile, anything can happen"

if i'm missing something please let me know so i can make a 5x5 bingo board thanks for your time

Just a gentle reminder. In case you were wondering why many top players - including ZeRo and Ranai - did not use their mains last night. Set counts are completely irrelevant, let top players have their fun.

That is all :)

The Movement Options of Smash 4's Top Players

Posted: 11 Jul 2017 02:22 PM PDT

I thought that it would be interesting in giving an overview of what movement options that each top player uses in their gameplay to show what is current in the meta as well as potentially outline which movement options are useful based on the character that they respectively play.

TSM Zero

His Diddy has some extremely tricky movement in the air, which takes advantage of the huge momentum boost from monkey flip. As a defensive option he mainly B-Reverses his momentum using a shield cancelled Popgun mix-up his landings. But as shown vs Raito at ARMS Saga, he can also use it to edge-guard efficiently. Ledge-cancels with monkey flip are also something that he uses to great effect, especially by following up with an instant back air for more shield pressure at the ledge. Surprisingly, Zero's ground movement options are relatively simple. He typically likes to foxtrot back and forth while mixing up with run-up shield/spot-dodge. Occasionally, he mixes it up with ground B-reverses with popcan or extended dash dances, but for the most part, he prefers to abuse Diddy's great roll and Smash4's shield mechanics. Note that his Lucina showcases extended dash dancing a lot more.

MVG Echofox MKleo

The first thing that you notice about his movement is his empty hops and his use of perfect pivots in neutral with all three of his characters. In fact, Mkleo is probably the pioneer of using perfect pivots in situations that aren't for extending combos. The combination of these two techniques is mainly for mind-games if he is corner-pressuring an opponent, or for whiff-punishing grabs if used in neutral. Mkleo also uses B-Reversed/Wavebounced shield breaker to surprise an opponent shielding. While I occasionally see foxtrots/dashdancing/extended dashdancing, it's a lot less than I would assume, considering how good these options are for Marth/Cloud especially. I've been also noticing that MKleo is starting to shield drop more, which is rare to see in today's meta.

NRG Nairo

ZSS is all about spaced aerials so it makes sense that Nairo doesn't use that many different ground movement options. Combined with the fact that ZSS doesn't have the greatest perfect pivot nor a particularly long dash length, I can perfectly understand why Nairo typically only uses foxtrot to move around on the ground (watch his Bowser/Lucina if you want to see some cool ground movement options). Of course, he's not afraid to use the flip kick ledge cancel or B-reversed paralyzer in the air whether to land safely or to extend combos.

RNG Dabuz

Of the top players, Dabuz probably uses the simplest of movement options with his character. He typically only foxtrots back and forth for spacing. However, I am impressed with his usage of Rosalina's crouch and crawl to lock down the wall of that he puts up.

C9 Ally

Ally's Mario is honestly so interesting to watch. His use of Mario's skid animation to bait grabs and approaches feels like it shouldn't work, but there's enough mix-ups from the skid that he makes it viable. Occasionally, you might see a bit of dashdancing, or a perfect pivot or two in neutral, but for the most part, he sticks to skidding around on the ground, either surprising you with a run-in grab, or an upsmash at kill percents. I also like that he uses walking a lot as a mindgame or as a bait. A famous example is his set with Zero at Zero Saga, in which he slowly walks toward Zero and throws out a random F-smash to win the set.

Misfits Larry Lurr

Larry has got some great all-around movement. I definitely see moments in his sets where he is using perfect pivot in neutral for spacing, to extend combos, and to come in with an approaching uptilt. Fox has a great perfect pivot length so it is understandable that he uses it in as many applicable places as possible. If he's doing any of these options, he is usually spacing with aerials or approaching with dash attack, so it's understandable that he doesn't use any other movement options.

P1 Captain Zach

If I'm being honest, I can hardly understand Bayonetta's movement options in the air. But what I can say is from a spectator's point of view, it definitely looks impressive. Bayonetta's specials are so versatile, I can hardly see a reason why Captain Zach would use perfect pivots, B-Reverses/Wavebounces, dashdancing, or any other options. Still, his movement when he is planking the ledge or when he is recovering is tricky enough to mix-up opponents.

2GG Komorikiri

I cannot comment on his Sonic because I feel like I don't see it enough, but I can say that his Cloud and Marth have a very similar movement style to MKleo. Lots of empty hops and neutral perfect pivots as a spacing tool as well as a mindgame. Not much else to say about it other than it's clean and gets the job done.

Mr. R

Personally, one of my favourite players to watch, especially for his movement. I remember one of the first time's my mind was blown watching Mr. R was watching him recover against Ally and doing a wall-jump instant B-reverse with needles and grabbing Ally who was shielding from the ledge. I'm pretty sure he doesn't do this mix-up anymore, but I can at least appreciate that Mr. R is always looking for innovative ways to optimize his movement. Recently in sets, you can see him use Sheik's dashdance when he is techchasing an opponent or to bait out a reaction. There is, of course, questions about how useful this is, considering Smash 4 dashdancing was largely regarded as useless, but I see it as effective and would like to see it more in other characters. He of course utilizes perfect pivot, but more for extending combos on fast-fallers as opposed to in neutral (more opting for grounded B-reversed needle cancels). Sheik's extremely short dash into shield probably means that extended dashdancing is probably useless, but I look forward to see what Mr. R can come up with in the future.

LG Abadango

Teleport ledge cancels are an integral part for Mewtwo's disadvantaged state and you can definitely see this a lot in Abadango's gameplay. B-reverses and wavebounces are also extremely important for spacing, especially when used with Shadow Ball, whether it be grounded or in the air. Abadango's movement is clean and succinct and I doubt he really needs any other movement options to clean up his game. As an aside, it's up for debate that fellow Mewtwo's, Wadi and Rich Brown have better movement, but I would need someone to point out specific examples for me personally to pick a side.

----------------------------------

And that's all I have on the top players. I might choose some honorable mentions outside the top 10 if I have time in the future. As for progressing in the meta, I would love to see more shield dropping out of the top talent, as well as linking perfect pivots, dashdancing, and extended dash dancing into eachother for some PPMD-like movement in Smash 4. Things I don't see catching on are alternative control schemes like Bidou (sorry ESAM), as well as obscure movement options like step-dashing.

TLDR: Current top players are split between integrating new movement options into their gaimeplay and run-up shield/rolling. This disparity is highly dependant on what character they main.

EDIT: It seems like a lot of the top tier characters don't gain much from EDD and simply have a better foxtrot (eg. Cloud, Fox, ZSS) so we will probably not see it for the top 10 that use these characters.

2GG and BAM have mutually agreed to part ways

Posted: 11 Jul 2017 12:59 PM PDT

Didn't see it posted yet.

Hi everyone,

We wanted to make a public statement regarding our very own 2GG Bam. As of 7/10/17, Bam is no longer representing 2GG. We have since spoken with Bam on a professional level and there is no negativity with this mutual decision to release him from the team. For anything 2GG please continue to reach out to Champ or Jmex for future inquiries regarding 2GG related matters.

With this change @eSportsDEMI will be the bridge between Esports Arena and 2GG moving forward. She will be assisting Artists, Vendors, and other needed logistics for future Sagas.

We will continue to support Bam in his endeavors in Esports and in life as he continues his journey to bigger and better things.

Thanks, 2GG Management

Although I am a little sad we won't be seeing BAM around anymore, I hope for only the best for him.

EDIT: Despite deleting his Twitter, D1 has confirmed that BAM is good and he is coming to Vegas (presumably for EVO) (Source: https://twitter.com/xD1x/status/884866042291306496)

Can Liquid Crunch coach the other Liquid players aside from Hbox?

Posted: 11 Jul 2017 08:57 AM PDT

This has just been something I've been wondering about. Whatever your stance on coaching is it's pretty much inarguable how valuable it is to players when trying to improve. Hbox ascended to the next level pretty much when crunch started coaching him and he also does better in tournaments where mid-set coaching is allowed.

So since chu, chillin, and ken(not sure if he still plays) are on the same team can they use crunch as their coach as well if they wanted or is he only their to coach hbox?

I think it'd be interesting to see how far a proven coach like crunch could elevate the play of chudat and chillin.
