UPDATE

Hey everyone! Thanks for coming to chat with us: you had great questions and our team had a blast! The Wavedash team is winding down now and preparing to head home from EVO. Community interaction is critical to our process and you all had invaluable feedback.

Remember to sign up now on the IconsGG Web Site for beta access (available this fall) and reserve your username!

Hello, Smashers! We're the Wavedash development team:

Wes: Game Designer - Ashani Enthusiast
Alex: Co-Founder Technical Director

Eleine: Esports Marketing and Partnerships Manager

Yesterday we achieved a long time dream of ours. We finally were able to reveal our game to the world - both title and gameplay - and to do it on the largest stage in fighting games.

A lot has happened!

• We held our largest playtest yet, featuring eight setups and dozens of players rolling through
• The build had FIVE playable characters, up from three a month ago and two the month before that
• We announced our game's title, Icons: Combat Arena, along with its website, subreddit, and Twitter
• We announced our game at the largest fighting game tournament of the year, achieving a longtime dream of ours

Since starting Wavedash in 2015, we've always said that our biggest advantage is that we can share our progress with the community much earlier than other companies. The Smash community sets a very, very high bar, and we consistently find that the bar is even higher than we previously expected.

Rather than hide from that bar, we seek it out. We want your feedback. We do playtests at tournaments every month, and we've done so since our build was pixels bouncing on blocks. We share in-progress content. We expose ourselves to the world so that we can get your unflinching thoughts. When we get that, we know exactly how to improve the game. And for that, we are very thankful.

So, with all that said, hello! We're thrilled to be here. Let's talk gameplay.

I'm not a smash player, but that Evo top 8 on Sunday was amazing!

Posted: 17 Jul 2017 12:04 PM PDT

I play pretty much every fighter except Smash, so I don't follow the scene (I know a bit about the Melee scene). But I ended up getting really good seats for the finals yesterday and I didn't want to lose them during the Smash 4 finals yesterday, so I stayed. And I am so glad I did!

Those finals were absolutely nuts! And that grand finals? Damn... Completely insane and a total blast to watch! Congrats to all!

The Wii U just got a new System Update. If you have Smash Wii U mods, DO NOT UPDATE.

The Internet Browser was one of the titles hit. So it most likely was patched.

Thank you Disney XD!

Posted: 17 Jul 2017 12:17 PM PDT

My parents have previously been quite harsh toward my passion for video games, particularly Smash. They thought it was a waste of time and actively sought to stop me from pursuing my goal of becoming the best Yoshi main.

Thankfully, that's no longer the case. Thanks to Disney XD's coverage of EVO, I was able to finally show my parents the reason why I love this game. The fast movement, the extremely tense neutral game, the character variety, etc. It was all there, and all of us enjoyed every bit of it. They came out with a new understanding of Smash, and now I can safely say they'll be supporting me in my future endeavors in Smash tournaments. Mom even said I should try and make it to EVO sometime! Sure, I'm not good enough to make it past 0-2, but still, I'd love to go!

But I digress. Thank you, Disney XD, for helping me show my parents the reason I love Super Smash Bros.

Oh, and a special shoutout to D1 and VikkiKitty. Your commentary was amazing and really helped them follow along after I explained the basics to them. Plus, you two had great synergy with each other and it showed throughout Top 8. I could listen to your commentary all day.

(Sidenote: Am I the only one that heard ZeRo say "Fuck yeah!" on live national television?)

New Melee to-do list. This list will probably outlive me.

Posted: 17 Jul 2017 12:06 PM PDT

Poke Floats, Break The Targets, Green Greens, Yoshi's Story, Opening, Hyrule Temple, Final Destination. Not necessarily in that order.

I hit 60 this year, so some of these may have to go to the next generation :D

Why a 2 month "off season" for Smash 4 would be a great thing for the scene

Posted: 17 Jul 2017 08:23 PM PDT

And it's not just "top player burnout", it goes a lot deeper.

  • It would allow Top Players to stream, create content, grow their brands.

    • Currently their is a huge lack of streams and YT video creators in the Smash 4 scene. This is crucial for creating interest in the scene, players having fan bases, and helping new players learn more in an accessible fashion. It's hard for anybody to have a consistent stream when every weekend they are out of town and every week exhausted from traveling.
  • Create hype by building importance of tourneys

    • Imagine that first tournament with every single top player after the 2 month break, shit would be mad hype. We would all be hungry to watch instead of seeing the same thing every single weekend. Also, the last tourney before the break would become a much larger deal and its importance would grow a lot.

There are a lot more reasons to that I don't want to go into a ton of detail with because I dont want to write a novel but here they are.

  • Still allows players to attend tourneys and make money during off season while still improving
  • Gives a structure to the scene
  • Helps with tournament burnout
  • Allows players to take a break, be with friends and family without worrying about falling behind in seeding/rankings

Feel free to discuss this with counter arguments but I believe this is a great solution to a lot of problems in the Smash 4 scene currently. Hope to see real action with this too, not just talk.

Highest Placing Player of Each Char at EVO 2017

He did it at Collision XIV and did it again at EVO 2017. Also on an unrelated note I'm so happy Salem won. It's a good day to be a Salem fan.

A look at the strongest Melee Region

Posted: 17 Jul 2017 04:34 PM PDT

Now that the 2017 Summer SSBMRank is out, I thought it'd be a good idea to compare regions and see how the regions stack up against each other.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yHb0fvUz6wrKM8KuhAW_qXusL7_AjrHByb-yt95CKeQ/edit?usp=sharing

Here is a visual breakdown of the regions included if anyone's interested.

http://imgur.com/a/PmKuM

I tried to include as many regions as I could find data for, just to have a more complete figure. For the players that have more than 1 region, I decided to go with whatever region they live in. So Dizzkidboogie is in NorCal and Slox is in New England. What do you mean Slox is New England? Connecticut is both Tri-State AND New England! I decided to use the regions as defined by The Big House. At THB5 Crew battles Tri-State was NY, NJ, and half of PA, New England got CT, and the western half of PA was Midwest (Abate from PA played for Midwest).

I took the players for each crew from that region's Power Rank, so for the SoCal crew, I just picked their top 10 players. For the regions that were made up of multiple states I first took the players that appeared on the SSBM Rank, and then picked players from all of their PRs. I'll admit, this selection was a little subjective, seeing as how I don't know everyone's region I picked the names that I thought had "National Recognition" from the Majors they attended (so if your region isn't exactly represented don't hate me, I'll just change it). I also included the rank of 102 for any unranked players in 2016 to find the average. There was already a 101st player, so I just went to the next number. I used 51 for 2017 seeing as how it was only a half rank.

For both the 2016 and 2017 ranking SoCal had the most players ranked, followed closely by NorCal and Europe.

I think there is a massive gap between the top 4 and everyone else. Florida, SoCal, NorCal, and Europe are clearly the strongest. In a 5v5 Crew battle, I think Florida would walk away with the win, but if extended to a 10v10 SoCal would be the strongest region. What are your thoughts/reactions?

Toon Link in 2017

Posted: 17 Jul 2017 11:18 AM PDT

Toon Link's meta has hugely stagnated. There are players like Ri-Ma, Sigma, Zan, 3xA, etc. that have picked up where Hyuga left off, but no one has come close to matching his results at a national level. Toon Link is still agreed to be within the high/high mid tier level.

On the official tier list, he is above Falcon, Peach, Bowser, DK, Greninja, Luigi, Olimar, etc.

On the PGRv3 list, he is above Bowser, Mega Man, Villager, Luigi, Olimar, etc.

Of course tier lists are based on the individual panelists, as well as theory of the character tools, not just results. But can anyone expect Toon Link to maintain a presence in the meta, or is he just dropping on a linear path? Thoughts?

Reddit Smash 4 Player Rankings for the month of June 15th-July 15th

Posted: 17 Jul 2017 04:28 PM PDT

This is gonna be our first time trying this out, but hopefully it can be a running series. The goal is to try and make our own "what if" version of a monthly power ranking, going off the yearly work the Panda Global Team puts together

This, as a community can hopefully serve as just a supportive, alternative and weighted series (similar to Onion Rankings but weighted different and not as detailed) to compliment the work they do, and hopefully get players on the way some attention or community support

And I want to thank /u/mu_II for helping me work on this

Time Frame: June 15th- July 15th, 2017

Any tournies that fell within this time frame may be counted. So everything from CEO 2017 to EVO 2017.

Weeklies can be listed but should not be used to argue placement, only tourneys that would be PGR qualified

Tournaments Used: (let me know if i missed any PGR qualified tournies)

CEO 2017. Top 24 Bracket and Wiki

Umebura 27 Top 96 Bracket and Wiki

Midwest Mayhem 9: Top 64 Bracket and Wiki

ARMS Saga: Top 24 Bracket and Wiki

EVO 2017 Top 48 Bracket and Wiki

How to vote:

  1. Each month, i write a topic. I start off by creating bolded spaces for discussion of the current top 10 PGR players on our list (bolded name sections, like for the character tier list discussions)

  2. Each player will be capable of having their hypothetical reddit rating change by +5/-5 points (nominated number with most votes/best argument is selected)

  3. I compile votes/see top rated movement column and release the results next month. It will tell us what they are on the official PGR, what they are on PGR reddit made and thus what they hypothetically would move them to (running concurrently). In tiebreak scenarios, players will be orderd from highest to lowest based on their current state on PGR

  4. Under each name, list why they should move up, down, or stay the same. Mention results (peak placements or big lows, notable PGR records and consistency across months), list specific videos showing in-bracket play and techs used (makes us analyze the meta better)

  5. Ill create an additional bolded section just for discussing top 11-20, and a final section in which anyone in the community can start a train for a player 21-50. Every month, I will list the players PGRv3 ranking, as well as the movement from a hypothetical reddit ranking like this (using ZeRo next month for example)

Example of what a weekly post from me looks like, using a hypothetical July 15th-August 15th topic

ZeRo DiddyKong: PGR- 1st. Reddit Ranking- 1st (+/-0). Voting would come under his name

I do this from the 15ths to be as inclusive of tourney timing, as well as not to overlap with our Reddit Character tier list, which tends to be at the start and end of months. This can also help us keep track of secondary play

This is all hypothetical, so while weeklies/non-PGR tournies will not count towards ranking, they can be posted to show if one player struggles in a particular MU, if someone finally takes a momentous set off or if a specific secondarys meta is improving The goal is not to be overly critical, more to help players rise. Helps to get players sponsored and make hidden bosses more visible. Even Kappa, for all its shit, gets players sponsored

Area 51

-Each month, i will create a space for discussing the current Area 51 players (5 unordered best outside of top 50), as well as a discussion spot for anyone who may have fallen out of PGR that week or anyone who should make it on there next month. We will try to vote which 5 players should make next months hypothetical Area 51

-This month, we will vote on 5 potential players who deserve to be in next months Area 51, along with the 5 current area 51. Anyone who drops off PGR next month will automatically be added to area 51 with priority on the 5 player list (ill explain more below as needed)

Do not use downvote button to vote on characters. Vote on them in the particular subtopic they are assigned

Monthly running TTS Results system can be found here, but this is totally optional and you do not have to fill out every player or even consult this

Remember, this is all hypothetical, just for fun, and meant to be constructive. Lets kick off our first ever topic!

/u/Ponder AKA Tonny Cannon, the Tournament Director and one of the founders of EVO, confirmed the reason why melee was a saturday event.

Posted: 17 Jul 2017 09:39 PM PDT

It was indeed because of the TV Broadcast deal including Disney XD , ESPN U and Nintendo.

Its not speculation anymore, he straight up confirmed it 4 days ago in a comment that not many seemed to have realize came from him.

Now that we got the speculation label out of the picture, what do you guys really think of this?
