FAQs:

  1. This is the fourth Battle Gateway tournament of 2017. The winner of the first was Shippu, while the second and third was by aMSa.

  2. Battle Gateway takes place on East Japan. Players such as Tapioka, Kounotori, and Nanashi who live in West Japan as a result mostly did not attend this tournament. Rudolph and Watch however represented West Japan at this tournament. This was the last Japanese tournament before EVO 2017.

  3. Here is Japan's current PR from the beginning of the year: https://twitter.com/aMSaRedyoshi/status/827903025985380353

  4. Top 3 was initially planned to be Bo5. However, the entire tournament was Bo3 due to the interest of time; there were more entrants than usual, and this was first time BGW has co-hosted more than one Smash game (64).

  5. Rudolph has entered few tournaments this year compared to his rivals, entering four tournaments in 2017 compared to aMSa's seven and Yu's six. However, he currently holds the best cumulative placing in Japan, obtaining 1st at three of these four tournaments and 2nd in his outlier. He currently holds a positive record against every Japanese player with one exception: aMSa. Like 2016, aMSa remains a consistent stain in Rudolph's otherwise clean record. Once again, the two rivals failed to meet each other in bracket, and many are itching to see their rematch from March once more.

  6. BGW 17 was not particularly kind to aMSa. He lost to his demon, Sanne, once again in winners, and in losers, he dropped a set to Gucci, tipping their previously even record away from aMSa's favor. Sanne, who is not a member of Japan's top 5, holds a threatening rebuttal against aMSa's run for best in Japan. As if a response to that, aMSa finally gained a victory against Sanne in losers after three straight losses. Their record is now 2-3 in Sanne's favor, but aMSa plans to turn the commonly held Western belief that he obtains mediocre results in Japan into an irrefutable myth once and for all.

  7. After a somewhat questionable first quarter, Gucci seems to have found his pace by obtaining yet another 2nd place in a row. Rudolph remains his demon, cementing a 0-4 deficit against the current King of Japan. However, he has managed to gain the upper hand against aMSa, twisting his previously tied record into a 3-2 lead. He also managed to dodge Yu, who represents one of Gucci's more inconsistent match-ups: Falco.

  8. Victory seems elusive for Yu once again as he loses a nail-biting set against Rudolph before being eliminated by his demon, aMSa, in losers. Japan's best Falco has shown many times he is capable of beating anyone in Japan, but his somewhat consistent losses against aMSa only seem to shrink the gap between him and the hungry Gucci shortly behind him in ranks.

  9. Plata, Japan's second best Yoshi, the runaway train of 2017 that has defeated the likes of Kounotori and darkatma, finally seems to have been briefly stopped at BGW 17, losing to lower ranked players in dano and Massun. This may hopefully be a minor setback in Plata's otherwise colorful rise to stardom out of aMSa's shadow.

  10. On the other hand, it might be the year of Falcon in Japan. Not only has Gucci brilliantly returned, but second-tier falcon dano finally obtained one of his best wins in Plata. Meanwhile in West Japan, another second-tier Falcon Nagaimo obtained 3rd at a Master Hand monthly, defeating Sobameshi and s-royal along the way. Speaking of surprise runs, Mid Japan's Massun came out of nowhere, beating two ranked players in watch and Plata to obtain 5th; his best Japanese major run before this point was 17th!

  11. BGW 17 marks one of the very few Melee majors to feature more than one game by teaming up with 64 Major Kanto. There was plenty of crossplay between the two games (k y s k and Gyaki entered in Melee and aMSa and Rudolph (I believe) entered 64). Both tournaments were very large, breaking 100 entrants for both! 64 in particular was the second largest 64 tournament ever in Japan.

  12. Meanwhile in West Japan, a Master Hand tournament went on. Sobameshi defeated Nanashi, while Hino earned one of his best wins against Kounotori. K.F in the meantime emphatically earned first. With wins on Nanashi, Kounotori, Rudolph, and Shippu, this begs the question: is Japan's best Puff, K.F, the second best player from the West?

  13. The following Japanese players are entering EVO 2017: Gucci, aMSa, Zer0 (Best Japanese Doc), K.F (Best Japanese Puff), Kounotori, kkp (Top Japanese Fox), Negu (High-level Japanese Peach), dano (High-level Japanese Falcon), MOSH (Top Japanese Fox), s-royal (Top Japanese Fox), and Watch (Best Japanese ICs).

Clone Wars 2: Building the Ultimate Link

Posted: 08 Jul 2017 03:01 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I thought it would be interesting to do a series of posts in which we (collectively) build the ultimate version of a character by taking the best attributes and moves from their clones and semi-clones.

This second one will focus on Link and Toon Link!

KuroganeHammer links:

Some rules, modified from last time:

  1. Each move in its entirety (jab, fsmash, down B, etc.) must come from one character. So you can't take Mario's Jab 1 and Luigi's Jab 2, nor can you say "Luigi's fsmash but with Mario's fsmash knockback".
  2. Jump height is not an independent character attribute; rather, it's a function of gravity and jump force. When discussing what attributes to take from each character, jump force is the relevant one. Turns out this isn't true in Smash 4. Thanks to /u/KHonepieceRWBY for pointing this out.

After I submit this post, I'll create comments below for us to discuss different aspects of the gestalt character. After discussion has progressed, I will make another post with a link to a poll, like last time.

Voting for the ultimate Mario build is still happening!

Please look through the discussion here: https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/6l2ny9/clone_wars_1_building_the_ultimate_mario/
