Lucky & Hugs are now free agents as Selfless Org owners step away Posted: 07 Jul 2017 12:16 PM PDT https://selfless.gg/news/orgupdates From the article: "On the Smash Melee front, Hugo and Lucky have both finished their contract terms and are free agents, looking for new homes effective immediately. Both are great guys and competitors with strong individual brands, and I'm personally hoping to see them signed to new organizations in the very near future—and willing to help make this happen in any way I can— but know that if it takes a little longer than planned, their communities will support them and allow them to continue living their dreams. Joey and Hugo, you guys rock and I'm looking forward to sharing some high quality craft brews with you soon (because that's what we drink, am I right?)." Edit: Added tweets [link] [comments]

Errors within the Challonge Bracket System Posted: 07 Jul 2017 01:50 PM PDT TL;DR - Challonge is failing to seed 16 man brackets properly, pls fix so my already dying scene doesn't have fraudulent tournaments. Longer TL;DR - Challonge does not send people to losers bracket correctly in a 16 man or smaller bracket. It will give a harder bracket to those who are seeded 9 or 10, while giving seeds 11 and 12 an easier one. However, it also changes how it sends people to losers based on the tournament size, for example in a 32 man bracket it sends 9, 10, 11, and 12 to losers correctly. Not only does it fail to follow the philosophy of seeding outlined below, but fails to stay consistent within its own set of rules. This means any tournaments run on Challonge are not run as well as they could be, and Challonge needs to address and change this bug immediately. Throughout this post, please use challonge.com/seeded8, challonge.com/seeded16, challonge.com/seeded32, and challonge.com/seeded64 to check my work! I triple checked all of my work, but with the scope and complexity of brackets its entirely possible I missed something. I believe I have found errors and inconsistencies with how Challonge sends people into losers, which is damaging the tournaments that run their brackets using it. Not only does it not operate on the values and reasons we use seeding, it also is self-contradictory in how it sends people to losers. In losers round 2 of a 16 man bracket, challonge pits 6 v 9 and 7 v 12 on one side, and 5 v 10 and 8 v 11 on the other side. This violates the principle that a higher seeded team should not have a more difficult bracket than a lower seeded team. The players that 6 plays in his run is: 11 -> 3 -> 9 -> 7. The players that 7 plays in his run is: 10 -> 2 -> 12 -> 6. There is no reaason for 6 to play 9 instead of 12, in fact in the 32 man bracket challonge sends people to losers correctly. Because 6 and 7 play in the next round, they should be swapped to ensure that 6 has an easier bracket than 7. Challonge's seeding method leads to a more difficult bracket for the higher ranked seed, which is the opposite of what we are trying to accomplish by seeding our brackets. If we define the "Evenness" of a match compared to the round its in as the difference of the summation of the seeds in the match compared to the average of the seeds in the round, challonge creates more uneven matchups than could be made. For example, in LR2, 6 + 9 - 17 = 0, 7 + 12 - 17 = 2, 5 + 10 - 17 = -2, and 8 + 11 - 17 = 0. Compare this to the optimal way of seeding, where 6 plays 12, 7 plays 9, 8 plays 10, and 5 plays 11, and you get 6 + 12 - 17 = 1, 7 + 9 - 17 = -1, 8 + 10 - 17 = 1, and 5 + 11 - 17 = -1. The second way is centered over 0, and therefore more even and fair for all matches and players. Unfortunately, Challonge is not even consistent in how it treats sending people to losers bracket. In the 32 man bracket, the matches that occur in Winners Round 2 and Losers Round 3 are equivalent to the matches that occur in Winners Round 1 and Losers Round 1 of the 16 man bracket. This means we should expect the matches to play out exactly as it was in the 16 man bracket, if all the matches are the same there are no meaningful differences between the two brackets. Even by looking at them, the only difference is that all the losers matches in the 32 man bracket are upside down, but the physical placement does not actually change how the matches should be played. However, in the 32 man challonge correctly seeds 6 against 12, 7 aganst 9, 8 against 10, and 5 against 11. Even if you disagree with my seeding philosophy, it is clear that challonge is being inconsistent with how it treats putting players into losers. This error doesn't occur when comparing the 64 man and 32 man brackets, so it seems the bug only hurts small scale locals. Challonge is failing to seed 16 man brackets properly, pls fix so my already dying scene doesn't have fraudulent tournaments. Philosophy of Seeding (Skip this unless you disagree with how I believe seeding should be distributed): I am running off of the axioms given in the paper, "What is the Correct Way to Seed a Knockout Tournament?" by Allen Schwenk. The first axiom is Delayed Confrontation. The teams rated among the top 2j shall never meet until the field has been reduced to 2j or fewer teams. This is the whole reason we have seeding, to ensure Armada and Mango don't meet round 1 at Big House. The second axiom is Sincerity Rewarded, a higher seeded team should never be penalized by being given a more difficult schedule than a lower seed. Since a player has earned their higher seed, they also deserve to be given an easier bracket compared to a player who has not shown that they are nearly as good. These two axioms are what my seeding philosophy is based off of. I believe that given any round, whether it be winners or losers, the best player should play the worst player, the second best player plays the second worst player, etc. until we reach the middle two teams playing each other. This ensures that the best teams won't knock each other out early, and someone who is not good won't get a lucky bracket of unskilled players, inflating their final placing. The exception to this rule is that losers bracket must be split into two halves, otherwise players would get knocked out of the tournament by the player that beat them in winners, which we as a community have decided is not good. Edit: http://imgur.com/a/XDcih this is the inconsistency I was talking about. There is no difference between the matches in the first round of losers that is shown, as well as the seeds of the people coming down from losers, but they are placed differently for no reason. Posted: 07 Jul 2017 08:36 AM PDT This Saturday (in Japan Time) will be one of the very few Japanese multi-Smash tournaments in recent history, and both Melee and 64 this weekend have very high entrants numbers by Japanese standards. 64 in particular is at 134 entrants, making it the 2nd biggest 64 tournament in Japan history since 2011. However, this one might be more stacked! It features players such as Wario (allegedly), k y s k (3rd at Genesis 4), Wangera (Best Puff), Fukurou (Best Japanese Kirby), Kurabba (Top Japanese Yoshi), Prince (Combo Contest Master and Top Yoshi), Keisuke (Top Japanese Kirby), Moyashi (Top Japanese Kirby), Hiyo (Top Japanese Yoshi), Gyaki (Top Japanese Link), Sekirei (Top Japanese Link), Yu-kun (Top Japanese Falcon), FAUST (Top Japanese Mario), and more. Melee hovers at 108 entrants, making it one of the largest Japanese tournament in quite some time. It features players such as aMSa, Rudolph, Gucci, Yu, Plata, Sanne, kkp, Da-yoshi, Watch, dano, and more. It will be one of the rare tournaments where Rudolph attends a major Japanese tournament featuring many of Japan's Top 5 including aMSa, Gucci, and Yu. This is a link to the schedule This is the full entrants list It will most likely be streamed (in English) on VGBC for Melee. 64 will be streamed on twitch.tv/kyskyskysk [link] [comments]
