Top Cards of the Week from /r/CustomHearthstone (07/16/2017) Later Edition

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 04:02 PM PDT

Hi. Sorry it's a day late! Laser Snake has been usurped and we've got a few new twists on old mechanics like Discover and Hand Buffing.

Anyway, here's the album: Ding!

Be sure to check out /r/customhearthstone and its weekly design contest. Last week's winner was /u/Nanophreak with Felbender. This week the challenge is for participants to create their best common cards.

We'll be back next week (hopefully on time).

The real problem with hearthstone: the low ranks

Posted: 17 Jul 2017 03:25 AM PDT

I take a break for a few weeks and decide to come back past mid-month. What am I met with? Exclusively tier 1 decks rank 20 and up. I cant imagine how new players get into this game anymore, these 'tier lists' for hearthstone have effectively killed any variance in low ranks anymore. You either buy packs and dust to craft one of four tier 1 decks because ___.hearthstone.com said you NEED it, or you quit.

If this was early season - no problem makes sense, but how many people REALLY are going to be going for high ranks that are at this rank right now, theyre just ruining the experience for new players and topping out at rank 10 because they dont understand the decks theyre playing.

The low ranks need a drastic re-think, particularly the step up from rank 21 to 20 if this is the new rank 20 landscape people are met with..

EZ BIG EZ DRUID EZ is truly EZ

Just went from rank 10 to 5 with Thijs' druid with no losses at all. Never had that big of a streak. Mages and Pirate warriors have no chance against this deck and I was not even highrolling (I had a 6 mana 1/1 from a Moongalde Portal couple of times)

Remember 4 mana 7/7 and Purify?

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 11:09 AM PDT

Recently I realized that purify is probably played much more frequently on ladder than 4 mana 7/7. Isn't it funny how the worst card became more popular than one of the most OP cards in the game?

Global Games Top 8 Analysis and Predictions

Posted: 17 Jul 2017 03:46 AM PDT

Hearthstone Global Games is finally down to the top 8, and all 8 teams are very well deserved to be where they are. I have collected some stats from the tournaments and will predict who advances to the top 4 based off the numbers.

First off I would like to say that the scores predicted all 8/8 wins in the round of 16, and I'm expecting at least 3/4 to be correct in the round of 8 as well.

Table of HGG results for the Top 8

Team Combined Score Match Record Games won Games lost Game win percentage
China 571 7-2 23 10 69.70%
Netherlands 483 8-1 25 11 69.44%
United States 467 7-2 23 12 65.71%
Ukraine 385 7-2 24 13 64.86%
New Zealand 368 8-1 24 12 66.67%
South Korea 338 7-2 23 13 63.89%
Mexico 262 8-1 25 16 60.98%
Czech Republic 242 7-2 23 15 60.53%

The score here is a combined score based off player rankings and Blizzard tournament point earned before HGG, as well as performance in the tournament. China is in front, with Netherlands and the USA battling for second place.

Matches in Top 8:

China-Czech Republic

Numbers predict:

  • China: 60.8% to win
  • Czech Republic: 39.2% to win.

Analysis

A match where deck techs will be key. Both China and Czech Republic have proven to be masters of the format, using tech cards to prevent strategies of their opponent.

China has been playing very well since the end of Stage 1, currently in a 6-game win streak. They seem to favor aggro decks over control, frequently playing decks like Pirate Warrior, Aggro Druid and Aggro Paladin. They will be favored going into the round of 8, and are the team to beat in order to win the tournament.

Czech Republic is one of the most interesting teams out of a deckbuilding perspective. StanCifka said in the post-match interview that they wanted to bring Angry Chicken in Aggro Druid. They have also during the tournament queued decks like Quest Shaman and Bloodbloom Doom Warlock. Maybe they can catch China off guard with a crazy tech-in.

USA - New Zealand

Numbers predict:

  • USA: 52.3% to win
  • New Zealand: 47.7% to win.

Analysis

The David against Goliath match, where New Zealand has proven themselves to be well worthy of a spot in the top 4. Can USA put a stop to that?

United States has been, most like Ukraine playing well in Stage 1 and less so in Stage 2. However, with a 3-0 win against Taiwan, they are now back on track, and focused to win the title. With plenty of experience in high-stakes matches, they are favourites to advance to the top 4.

New Zealand has worked very hard to reach the top 8, scouting the opponents carefully, and making smart decisions when picking classes. They have also been playing fantastically, being 8-1 in the tournament and haven't lost a game since May 5th when they lost against Argentina. This will be their hardest match yet, but they have a really good chance.

Mexico-South Korea

Numbers predict:

  • Mexico: 46.5% to win
  • South Korea: 53.5% to win.

Analysis

The weakest match out of the four, based on score, but nevertheless two really strong teams that battle it out for a spot in the top 4.

Mexico has surprised a lot of people in HGG, with a score of 8-1, they are definitely a force to be reckoned with. They are innovative deck builders, and very consistent players. We should never forget the fact that Epsylon won a game as Hunter with Curator and Ysera in the deck. Mexico will give South Korea their hardest match of the whole tournament.

South Korea has a really strong line-up, with plenty of star quality players, and good teamwork. Kranich in particular is known for his great deckbuilding, and both Handsomeguy and Ddahyoni have participated in the HS World Championships, and Flurry is currently rank 2 in Asia according to Gosugamers. Watch out for South Korea.

Ukraine-Netherlands

Numbers predict:

  • Ukraine: 46.6% to win
  • Netherlands: 53.4% to win.

Analysis

Wow. I am very sad to say that one of these two teams will have to leave the tournament before top 4. This might as well have been the final of the tournament as both of these teams have played exceptionally well.

Another team with only star players, definitely deserving to be in top 8. Ukraine played stage 1 superbly, but only finished third in stage 2. However with a score of 2-1, there was no issue of advancing to the top 16. Kolento and Neirea both finished top 4 in the recent HCT Spring championships, and NickChipper and DrHippi are both top tier. Prepare for a battle of the century.

The Netherlands just managed to win a really intense last game to advance to top 8 over Brazil. The last game was made on the back of Thijs, which could be seen as the star player of the team. However, his teammates Tyler, Theo and Mitsuhide are all star players, and they have shown great teamwork during the tournament, only dropping one match in the whole tournament. Do not miss this match.

Final Words

According to the numbers, the following teams will advance:

  • China
  • USA
  • South Korea
  • Netherlands

I am however the most concerned about the second and fourth match, where anything can happen. I am happy if 3 out of 4 predictions are correct, and the team that breaks a full 4/4 is New Zealand.

TL;DR:

China, USA, South Korea and Netherlands will likely advance, with reservations for New Zealand.

UI request: display opponent's hand size when hovering over their deck

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 03:42 PM PDT

It would be nice if it acted the same way as displaying your deck/hand totals, instead of having to move between the 2 locations. Certainly not necessary, but a small change that would tighten things up.
