Why does everyone act like this game is unplayable without mods?

Posted: 25 Jun 2017 07:22 PM PDT

I'm a console peasant. Not only that, my console is Playstation. By simple chance, the first gaming console my parents ever bought me as a kid was a PS2, and it's just stuck ever since. Mostly because I kept stupidly assuming backwards compatibility was a guaranteed thing, but that's neither here nor there.

I originally bought Skyrim in late 2011, thanks to all the hype at school surrounding it. It took a while for me to really learn the game and understand it, but I was hooked. Over the past six years, I've constantly come back to it, almost always with a character I roleplay extensively; I can't think of ever once simply fucking around with a character named Nordy McBeardface who becomes the leader of every faction while decked out in Legendary Daedric everything and takes nothing seriously.

Now, if you're the kind of player who uses Nordy McBeardface, I can understand how the game would get very dull, very quickly for you. For me, however, it's been kept alive by roleplaying and the limits I put on myself while playing each individual character. Now that I have the PS4 remaster (again, the worst possible version, by all accounts), I admit that the mods I do have would be hard to give up, but all of them - every last one - adds immersion to the game, not massive new storylines with full voice-acting or Thomas the Tank Engine dragons.

I guess this was partly just an excuse to rant about my personal Skyrim experience, but I also want to hear other thoughts. Obviously, if you frequent this subreddit in the year 2017, you probably aren't bored of Skyrim, either. But do any of you play vanilla or lightly-modded console games, and do you feel the same way? Or are your PCs modded to Oblivion and back, to the point that the game is unrecognizable, and the idea of playing vanilla fills your heart with unimaginable terror?

Is there a mod that lets the forsworn take over Markarth?

It feels kinda strange that after killing every guard in the city, madanach and his bois just disperse. It feels like it'd be more sensible for them to take control of the city
