Parents know there's no pausing in online games; kids know how to "accidentally" join another round.

Posted: 02 May 2017 09:43 AM PDT

A comment in another thread made me think of posting about this. [Most people here probably are aged out of living under their parents' rules/supervision. But in case there are some younger forumites here...]

I'm a long time video gamer (since the 70s). I play with both my sons (high school, middle school). I know online games can't be paused, and they can't be immediately dropped. (I've educated my wife/their mother on this.) So when I see they're playing something, and dinner times comes, or bed time, or "you have to get outside for some fresh air" time, etc., I tell them to wrap up their play time. I know they can't just immediately quit it.

Playing Overwatch (or Hearthstone), they can finish their current game, then log off. Playing WoW, they should head towards the nearest inn for log off.

Aggravatingly, though, too often after their current game, they "forget" and join another game. I'm forgiving/lenient with a mistake the first time. But I have a few times forced them to leave a game (never a comp match*) in progress.

If this post has a point, it's this: Kids - your gamer parent can be the biggest supporter of your gaming entertainment. Don't abuse their knowledge (that you can't pause an online game) by trying to sneak in more game time "accidentally." Don't make your gaming time an aggravation for your parents.

  • I'd never make them leave a comp team. (That would be punishing 5 other, innocent players.) But if they joined another after I told them to quit, they'd get restricted from playing comp again for a week or so. After a couple of restrictions, they no longer make this "mistake".

Blizzard, thank you for the Uprising Event

Posted: 02 May 2017 05:34 AM PDT

Overall, Uprising was pretty simple and if you knew what you were doing, it was easy to abuse to get your three arcade wins. But in the end, I really appreciated the event. It provided a fun co-op experience that gave us a little dive into some of the lore of the game. As we come up on the anniversary of release, it was nice to have a PVE experience that was still engaging after multiple playthroughs. I would like to see more of this in the future.
