Learn Dota 2 - Killing heroes =/= Winning

Killing heroes =/= Winning

Posted: 03 May 2017 07:39 AM PDT

I lost a long, painful game last night, so I'm coping with it by making a passive-aggressive PSA: killing the ancient is how you win Dota, not killing heroes. My team had a substantial midgame advantage, and our kill count was much higher than our opponents. We weren't able to break highground, however, because we didn't snowball that advantage into items and teamfights that would let us close out the game.

Once you've finished your core items, consider "what will I need in the next fight? What are my weaknesses?" Our LC had 300+ duel damage, but continued to build damage items until the end. She didn't need more ways to kill people faster, she needed survivability against the enemy Tinker's harass. A bkb would have likely won the game. Come to think of it, so many games could be won if people just built bkb or linkens instead of more damage.

By the same token, there's a point where you need to stop fucking around and make sure that taking objectives is the primary thing on your mind. Getting a kill at 45 minutes means very little if you can't turn it into something tangible. Are you preparing for a big teamfight? Push out lanes. Did you win a big teamfight? Take an objective. Did you get rosh? Take an objective. Are you strong now, but know that you will fall off later? Take an objective. Consider your win conditions: are you better at 5v5s? Force one to happen, don't get picked off alone. Do you need to split push? Put pressure on them, but don't get baited into a 4v5 while your NP is on the opposite side of the map. Do you rely on getting picks? Get a successful gank, and then immediately force a fight while you have the numbers advantage.

Think big picture, and don't get tunnel vision. There are many different ways to win the game!

On a incredibly long losing streak.

Posted: 03 May 2017 05:34 PM PDT

I am on a really long losing streak. Almost 15 games. Out of my last 25 games I have won 4. I am relatively new to the game, only about 170 hours in. However its getting incredibly frustrating. Shouldn't unranked mmr bring me down against people closer to my skill level. Is there anything I am doing wrong, or is this incredibly bad luck.

Broodmother VS Sandking 1v1, wat do

Posted: 03 May 2017 01:31 PM PDT

Level 1 is a struggle, I can mostly just sit there and leech XP until level 2. I've tried creepskipping him, but he just follows the creeps to the lane and as soon as he sees me, he stuns and starts autoattacking applying a lot of Caustic. There must be a way to at least not get shitstomped by him.

The only thing I haven't tried is the no spider build with ult and passive, but I'm not feeling that it would work as most likely he will hit 6 before me and and just stun and ult me down if I try to go in for a kill.

Drow Ranger vs Tinker Mid?

Posted: 03 May 2017 07:17 PM PDT

I am fairly new to DOTA. After about a hundred bot games, I started playing normal games. One game had me mid Drow against Tinker. After 3 feeds, I didn't come back to the lane. My teammates got mad, said I'm a scrub and I can't play properly cause I'm a girl. I'm pretty sure it's hard to win a lane against a Tinker. Obviously, we noobs lost the game trashtalking like pros. What could have I done to do better?

What are some ways to become better without playing?

Posted: 03 May 2017 03:04 PM PDT

I recently feel that I'm spending too much time on this game without improving. Flipping between 3k and 4k recently. Not really sure what to do to improve

TIL that you can customize your in-game item builds (so do ability choice) in Dota 2 website

Took me about 2 years? I didn't play frequently (like only 100+ matches) though. I guess that's where Steam Guide made? The link goes here

Some 2k questions

Posted: 03 May 2017 05:39 PM PDT

I played a game as Storm Spirit, 2k average. I was looking through my replay and noticed the game is kind of reminiscent of a lot of my games. I make the same mistakes a lot even when I know I am making them. Ie greedy builds, overextending, ignoring team.

match id 3155691150 Is the game in question. I doubt you want to watch the whole thing so here is a summary:

  • I was in the mood to play Storm. Storm has lots of counters. I asked to pick last but Pudge wanted to pick last and I ended up against an Antimage. Not a problem until he had aghs manta abyssal so I hesitate to put this defeat entirely on the am pick.
  • I did pretty well but my team mostly just farmed and served as good distractions for me. Good warding though, put wards where I asked all the time.
  • The majority of the early game was spent farming, I ganked a few times but rarely helped my team fight. The late game consisted mainly of losing teamfights and me getting lots of pickoffs on farming enemy carries. Then bs got bloodthorne and am got aghs and I got shat on.

So here are my questions:

  • How to deal with Antimage? Most Storm counters can be dumpstered by bkb and/or bloodthorn, not am. I had bkb for manabreak, linkens for abyssal, bloodthorn for blink, I even got sheep to prevent manta for longer. Just once he got aghs I couldn't 1v1 him even though I had like twice his networth.
  • When to jungle, when to fight, and when to rat? I jungled a lot and the game ended due to the enemies having total map control. Our team had no push and medusa went full stats vs 2 mana draining rightclickers so we basically had nothing, but I never felt like I had the space to splitpush, is it worth it to go deep, cut lanes, probably die, just to push for a team that otherwise cant, or should I just farm it up and try to simply push when enemy cores are dead? Or should I just help my team fight whenever I can, even if it seems like a lost fight and 4 dead is better than 5 dead?
  • My deaths. I died once due to poor map awareness and misjudging omnislash bounce radius, once doe to unlucky ancient rooting, once due to an accidental suicide, and a few times when I was desperate do defend and dove into bloodseekers with bloodthorns and am with bashers etc. I didn't die a lot but often I prioritized my life over helping my team, often a kill, occasionally 2 kills. Which is more important? I felt at the time like I made the right decisions for the most part, but bs shit all over my team, made space for am, and won the game for dire. It seems like by the time I realize my team can't handle some snowbally guy it is too late.

How can I improve my chances of winning against 5 cores?

Posted: 03 May 2017 02:56 AM PDT

https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3153382238

I find myself at a huge loss on how to win against 5 core line ups. Especially when I'm supporting.

In this particular match, what could I have done better? I find myself out of hp in every team fight and having to back way too early. Rubick seems too squishy with pathetic cast range.

I considered getting ghost sceptre but 2 diffusals on the enemy team made me choose glimmer cape instead. I bought urn to get some hp, heal my teammates and myself after skirmishes so we can push.

Is there any way I could have helped my team win more? I think we had a small lead but it was thrown away so quickly.

How to turn around a bad start as support?

Posted: 03 May 2017 05:33 PM PDT

What's the best way to turn around a bad start as a support? I find it increasingly hard to do if I've had a bad laning phase to be effective in team fights or anything as I just seem squishy.

I went on a 6-win streak playing as CM and found myself able to do a lot and be useful to my team. Recently I've lost 2 in a row and felt like a massive burden to my team because I get picked almost instantly in a team fight. Any suggestions of what to do when you end up being 5-6 levels below the carries on the enemies team?

How should I play roaming Wukong?

Posted: 03 May 2017 05:40 AM PDT

I saw it was a really common role for him during the last major, adn a pretty darn effective one. I don't really know how to play roaming heroes in general so tips on that would be very welcomed as well.

What are some of the things I need to work on?

Posted: 03 May 2017 12:26 PM PDT

I am a very low mmr player (1kish), and I always thought i was really good, and didn't deserve such a low mmr. Then I play a string of ranked games and holy shit, did I do terrible. I played like 16 ranked matches, and lost 14 of them. So obviously, I am in this MMR for a reason, but am having trouble figuring out what it is. The highest probability is that I just get too tilted and play badly because of it. So, I have been trying to work on that, but even when I don't get upset for the whole game, I am not able to carry really hard like pros do. Obviously they have like 7k mmr teammates, but they also have 7k enemies. I on the other only have 1k teammates with 1k enemies, so I should be able to just afk farm for 25 to 30 minutes and 1v5 carry, but I can't. I have yet to meet any players who can farm well, and even when I'm getting like 650 to 750 gpm, I can't win. Lets take this game for example: https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3134503200 I am the Sven. I got pretty good farm, managing to get 600 gpm, and around 450 last hits per minute. I had the CK outfarmed really badly, AND Sven is a pretty good counter against him. Yet still, he raped our team, and I couldn't do anything. This is the same for a lot of games, like this one: https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3143551526 I was the terroblade, and I went mid against the SD, who did kind destroy me, but there wasnt really much I could do, but I managed to AFK farm the jungle and lanes with illusions and got really good gpm. None of the enemy team farmed that well, and we were doing alright in fights, but even as my farm got better, they started winning more and more teamfights. I understand that Axe does really good against illusion heroes, but it still shouldn't make the game as unwinnable as it was. Could anyone analyze some of these games or some other ones on my dotabuff that I could improve on to get better and raise my MMR? (Other than raging.) What replay should I analyse?

Posted: 03 May 2017 03:31 PM PDT

I'm a 2k player that have watched many videos and read a lot about dota. I've played with my 3~4k friends and frequently I can handle it. When I'm playing on my mmr things are chaotic and I feel I can't win more than luck allows me. I want to increase my mmr so I can learn playing against better people, since this is not teaching me anything anymore. What I don't do I watching my replays, out of laziness.

What tips can I have to increase it since I feel I need to win alone? I think my biggest issue is decision making, since I have better mechanics than almost everyone. How do I choose the right games to watch?

Auto attack on or off?

Posted: 03 May 2017 07:44 AM PDT

When I started playing i turned auto attack off so i could focus on last hitting without having to constantly move around.

Now that i'm getting better and can last hit all right while moving, i'm wondering if there are any benefits to having auto attack on aside from easier wave/jungle camp clearing?

Ember Spirit: Late game progression -> rapier

Posted: 03 May 2017 03:02 PM PDT

I just finished another rond of the lovely ember spirit and went for the magic damage build. I feel like I played okayish ( could have done better but to improve you have to play) vs the invoker but wasn't able to farm really well so I would like to have some tips, I know I should have creep blocked early on and try to deny / pull creep aggro to manipulate the creep equilibrium.

As the game went on I ganked pretty well and aside from 1-2 I don't feel like I made any huge mistakes.

My real question is about the late game. With octarine core and my team unwilling to siege high ground I went to split push lanes and got flamed for it, was it the correct choice to split push since I felt like our initiation wasn't really well and I did not manage to nuke anyone instantly ( again that's something I think I should improve on). At minute 70 I purchased a rapier since I felt like physical damage would be the better choice and allow me to get some building damage. Since I lost it a while later I'm unsure if it was the right choice and I just misplayed (too much) and if yes what could I have done better ?

I thought about getting a BKB but felt like it was more a positioning thing since the fights got dragged out quite a bit.

Thanks for reading and replying :)

TL:DR: How do I improve and how do I play ember late game ?

Force Staff on Dueled Target

Posted: 03 May 2017 07:02 AM PDT

I'm seeing conflicting information on this. If LC duels me, can I Force staff myself? If a teammate is being dueled, can I force staff them? I know the duel wouldn't end, but they would spend time running back together which means they're at least not attacking each other.

I am feeling really hopeless about my Ranked games. Desperately need help

Posted: 03 May 2017 02:07 PM PDT

Hey, So I'm 1.7k MMR, I had calibrated at 684 about 2 years ago. Been trying to rise for the past 2 years unsuccessfully. I have no idea what to focus on or what to improve. It seems like someone always snowballs in my games and usually it is the opponent. Even if my team gets an early lead, it is lost. I play support almost exclusively and currently I am playing support on safelane. I try to pull to give my safelaner an advantage and if possible gank other lanes. It's usually hard because it's 2v2. I would like to know what I should focus on and how it might help my team.

Why is there such resistance to tri-lanes?

Posted: 03 May 2017 01:35 PM PDT

Every time I've done it, it has worked out very well (as long as people do pulling and aren't stupid about it).

However, I've had really strange responses while doing it:

  • "Get out of my lane you will steal XP" from my safe lane carry (we promptly got a double kill later while the carry went to go grab a bounty rune and missed the entire free creep wave).

  • "Lol tri-lane try-hards" from the enemy off lane (we stomped them early but eventually lost the game - same game as above and our slark just didn't get strong).

  • "am I seriously alone down here?" from the off lane.

  • various "don't steal my exp, go away" lines but the game hasn't even started.

Why do people try so hard to even have a support in the game when they don't even set up the lanes properly? Why are trilanes so frowned upon in low MMR? I personally find them to be easy wins and it is a lot more fun to play support when you trilane since you get to do a lot more in the early game.

Sniper itemization

Posted: 03 May 2017 01:07 PM PDT

I love to go dragon lance-maelstorm-pike-mjollner then some damage item, but I've realized I'm under valuing shadow blade/SE. Great verus heroes with passives. Also pike sometimes isn't enough to get away from people getting on top of you. Should I get sb after lance? Or after maelstrom?

How do you decide what hero to pick?

Posted: 03 May 2017 09:18 AM PDT

I've got 2.5 k hours and I'm 2k MMr (lost a few matches so I'm back at 1.9 range).

Generally, I like playing pos 1 or 2, and I've been getting better at last hitting, but positioning is still a slight issue for me. When I'm playing Dota I can't decide what hero to pick so I go with my comfort picks around 80% of the time. The problem arises when my heroes have been picked/banned or unsuitable for the given match.

I have general ideas but can't choose the right hero. (ie pure damage or spells against DK).

Magic damage for heroes with illusions.

Any advice on how to win in trash tier?

Posted: 03 May 2017 12:11 PM PDT

Just lost my 3rd game in a row and i'm super tilted after what i had to experience. No matter how good i do at my lane (it's usually mid because i feel like i can have the most impact on the game from 2nd pos and be independent from my team at the same time, i play other roles if needed), there's always something wrong on other lanes.

It's not only about laning; things like picking sniper into pa or randoming in ranked or having 5 carries in one team isn't a rare sight, and it of course affects the game. What's even more tilting is seeing enemy players who are obviously not good winning just because their ally got fed. For example, in one of my latest games, i won mid against Alche and snowballed into the game but lost because enemy team (and especially fed PA) was just stronger than my other teammates.

This is obviously not that bad, but at this moment i feel like my teammates are intentionally ruining my games. Maybe it's somehow related to my behaviour score being really, REALLY low (about 3-4k i guess) because i abandon a lot.

What can I do to win games at low mmr without help from my teammates? What heroes and roles are the best? Thanks in advance

P.S. Fuck my life, posted this with an error in the title and had to wait 10m to post again
