League of Legends - A Bold Move: Daryl Thunderson Jr., 19, drops out of League of Legends to pursue college dreams

A Bold Move: Daryl Thunderson Jr., 19, drops out of League of Legends to pursue college dreams

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 10:21 AM PDT

Daryl's tightly-knit community of friends and family were stunned this Sunday morning to discover that Daryl, a "pretty decent" League player, had applied to UC Santa Cruz. Most surprising of all: he got in.

"He's been gaining, say, five or six league points a day," says Mr. Thunderson, father. "Then this morning, my son comes out of his room after checking his computer, and he's got the biggest grin. He tells me he's going to major in computer science. I could barely keep my egg scramble down."

League of Legends is a challenging PC game created by Riot, where professional players team up in groups of five to complete challenging feats, such as keeping their racist agenda off of twitter. The game has skyrocketed from after-school activity to worldwide Esport in a matter of years. With players around the globe and rewards of up to 500,000 dollars, Daryl might have made the biggest mistake of his life.

His sister, Emily, had only invectives. "I'm scared for him, I seriously am. He's going to put all his life and energy into this degree. Who will support him? What if he doesn't make it in the scene? I'm wishing he would have spoken to us before throwing his life away."

And now it is. By uninstalling League, Thunderson Jr. has sentenced his Gold III legacy to collect dust and become forgotten, like Ozymandias, or Origen's trophy shelf. It can only be imagined what Thunderson could have accomplished, what insights his Lee Sin OTP could have provided to a scene that many claim has become "dehydrated" since season three. What if he became the new insec? What if, in the best timeline, we would all be crying out that a player has just "done a Thunderson," when they hit a perfect kick? Not anymore. Not anymore.

The story is a bitter reminder of such champion players as Krepo, who retired his career to become an announcer and beloved personality. As well as all those poor members of Team Liquid, who--oh, sorry, my crystal ball turned on somehow.

At press time, everyone was relieved to know Daryl was not leaving League forever. "I just want to make a decent client," he told reporters.

Up next: Permanent vs indefinite: it all means the same thing to a company that let Tainted Minds run free.

A lot of people misunderstand this: Tyler1 isn't permabanned, he's banned indefinitely

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 04:11 AM PDT

Making a separate thread about this for hopefully more visibility.

In the other thread people about his ban's anniversary, there's a lot of people making comments like "he's permabanned, Riot shouldn't go back on their decision or it sets a bad example".

Unlike players like Jensen who actually were permabanned (and still unbanned anyway, for what that says about permabans), Tyler 1 is just indefinitely banned, meaning he's banned for as long as Riot wants him to be. The distinction is important because unbanning him is not "going back on their decision", their decision of banning him was made with the full intention of one day giving him another chance if he was showing signs of reform.

Many people are having their opinions influenced by "he's permabanned, he can't just get out of that by acting nice and claiming he's reformed". Once you realize that the ban was never intended to be permanent (except in the case that he proved to always remain toxic), that changes the entire approach to his unban. Given that many people who watch his stream think he's completely reformed since his ban and that the unban is already overdue, it's not a question of "should he be given another chance?", it's a question of "should he be given another chance now, or in the future?".

If you don't think he should be unbanned, your reasoning should be based on his recent stream behaviour. Not "he got permabanned, let him serve his punishment", which is just inaccurate.

HUGE Lee sin trick

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 05:28 AM PDT

TL;DR : You can cast R while mid-air from the second part of your Q if done correctly, watch the video https://youtu.be/V38yeKXz6Kc

I was just playing around with lee sin in the new practise tool and foud this... Now, I'm pretty sure there are some people that know about this, still decided to share it. It allows some ultra fast Q kick flash combos. That normally take twice as long as showcased in the video.

So, its basically about using other abilities while in the second part of Q mid air. You can't normally do that. You are just unable to cast both E and R. Well, if you jump on a ward with your W before activating the second part of Q and activate it before you reach the ward and finish the W, the Q just gets fcked up and you see like a weird fast running animation instead of the normal Q animation. Thats when you can just use E or R while mid air. And thats pretty stupid. You can start casting R while still travelling to the enemy and just flash behind the enemy way sooner. So the flash kick can be done wayyy faster with this.

Aram S rank needs a rework

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 05:53 AM PDT

Ive had 6 games in the last week (about 40% of the games I've played, I don't play often) where Ive had a KDA over 4 usually in the 15/3/~ range and I get A+'s every time. The only S's I've had have been on tanks where my KDA is basically 1, I do way less damage and the games are twice as long

Why am I being penalised for playing a carry role, it shouldn't be a throw away for me to get an S on a non damage focused role. But then for the same grade on a carry I need a perfect KDA/Double damage on everyone else etc. The ranking seems completely arbitrary but weighted massively against carries.

Hello everyone!

I am new to this subreddit but I wanted to share my latest digital drawing with you. As you see I tried to make her look as badass as I could, hopefully in a good way. It just suits the character so much. Xayah really makes me want to play League again (taking a break atm).

I would be glad for any form of constructive criticism :)

3 months, countless hours of work and finally we’ve launched the first ever 1v1 league. $2,000 prize pool every 2 weeks

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 10:29 AM PDT

We've got some killer news on a project that we've been working on the past couple months!

I'm stoked to announce the Zengaming League, which gives players a chance to compete (completely free) and win $2000 during every 2-week season. The league utilizes a ladder system, divided into 3 tiers according to skill level (as determined by your Zengaming rank--which you'll get after 10 placement matches). The first 300 players in all leagues combined will be rewarded. The prize pool is sponsored by both Zengaming and G2A.

The top-tier ladder will feature numerous semi pro players, and sponsors will be watching--we truly hope this will be a platform for players to display their talents and kickstart their eSports careers.

Enough of my jibber-jabber already, head over to Zengaming to join in! If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to contact me directly or leave your comment here.

BTW, if you guys wonder how Zengaming 'FBM' (First Blood Mode) works in 1v1, go ahead and check this 30 sec tutorial.

Peace =]

China's LPL becomes first region to abolish relegation, implement franchising system in League of Legends

Posted: 29 Apr 2017 08:51 PM PDT

As a guy who plays fairly close attention to NHL and decent attention to NFL, franchising has to be done right..

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 09:57 AM PDT

I'm typing something purely philosophical here; I'm not educated in lawyer speak, but I'd like to bring up some guidelines that should be followed when it comes to taking a big step like franchising:

  1. Preventing "Too big to fail" mentality: these things creep into monopolies and league systems where power pyramids are too difficult to ascend. Teams that make the most money can attract the best talent. Will parity be ensured? There's no draft right now (see later)... everyone pretty much signs as free agents, and some organizations are quite a ways better branded than others so their income is always going to be solid simply because of their legacy. They can spin a bigger economic web than their competition, so to speak. If league is franchising in NA, it's in their best interests to take measures of parity unless they want 80% of the fan base in NA to cheer on one of two teams. Pro leagues handle this through a "luxury tax" which means when a team spends over a limit, they pay a tax of the overspending to the other teams so that they can put together more competitive rosters, or they handle this through a hard salary cap.

  2. Omitting/Changing import limitations. This was likely a patchwork solution to the LMQ problem where five chinese guys came over to NA already playing like a squad and trying to vault to World's from a weaker region. However, the two import thing won't work in a franchised league; the teams at the bottom need a way to backdoor to the top of the standings. Seeing as franchising will also still maintain a "farm" system, I'm guessing, you can limit farm teams to 0 import, but franchised leagues should rethink the idea altogether. In NA, the import limit is essentially keeping things at status quo, which is not quite competitive enough (although NA, because of high powered imports, became considerably more competitive in the last split)... they should probably turn both the Chinese region and NA region into pure international regions but limit import slots from one particular region to 2 (ie, no more than 2 koreans on squads). LoL is in desperate need of a superleague and a franchised league can and should be that...

  3. Maintaining competitive system... if a team is not being serious about their slot and just using it to make money rather than to put together a competitive line-up... the owners should have a board and a commissioner like they do in pro-leagues in order to vote on banning a certain owner from running a franchise and forcing them to sell it; this would effectively take power away from Riot (rightly) and handing it to a perennial bad guy Bettmen/Goodell type of character. These are going to be larger and larger investments, so they'll need a better system to govern itself... and a consensus of rich guys with the passion to compete are the right people for the job.

  4. Players unions. In the interests of playing environments, a group of those old LCS veterans should get together and run a board that makes sure that players are well taken care of, and they should have the power to exact punishment on certain teams for not following a guild code for player treatment (which they'll come up with, having a few lawyers at their side). Again, due to the amount of money that's going to be poured into franchising, Riot needs to surrender executive control over these decisions. In addition to all of this, these kids are 17 when they advance, so they especially need mentorship on how to deal with real world situations so that people don't develop rifts with their family because they're getting serious attention from the video game industry. Make it look professional and respectable and ensure they have the psychological resources necessary to keep them socially fit to deal with life after league. It's no secret that a lot of gamers come from restrictive and traditional families, so players who take the risk of going into the video game industries should have proper care.

  5. Institution of a "draft"... Challenger leagues will be developmental leagues, obviously, so again, they'll have to start instituting rules that regulate organizations reserving players who are underaged and what not. Make players unable to be reserved when underaged, and do not let the teams with the biggest money buy their success by slamming them on the head with big cheques.

Now I know my suggestions are following the model of sports leagues, but these are systems that have run for 30+ years on disputes (when players unions were getting instituted), having a power balance between players and owners, removing power from monopoly (and right now, Riot is essentially monopoly), and enhancing the competitive integrity of their leagues. I'm probably better at writing satire than lawyer stuff, but if I see Riot turning NA into franchising and expecting to hold onto the reigns of the competitive integrity (which has almost effectively stagnated every league since the top tiers in most of them have not seen much of a shift in the last two years), I'm going to be majorly disappointed. Franchising can be a great thing if opportunities are seized, allowing us to see highly competitive league of legends.

My 11 year old daughter's watercolor Poro and Kirby cosplaying a poro.

Posted: 29 Apr 2017 04:34 PM PDT

http://imgur.com/a/YZEaM

My wife and I have been playing since beta and we let our daughters play pretty young (at 7 and 4 years old... I guess we're bad parents or something... but we're game developers ourselves so how can we not raise gamer kids???).

This is a watercolor our youngest (now 11) made of a Poro and Kirby dressed as a Poro with both of them drooling over a poro snack.

Her school has an art show at the end of the year where local businesses can lease the works to put them on display. This piece got leased within moments of the show starting! She was so excited.

My photograph isn't that great, and there's some reflection since it is framed, but a few of my LoL friends said I should share it here.

EDIT: Thank you everyone for so many kind words! I'm surprised by how many people think it is too good to be done by an 11 year old. She will be very amused by that. I don't think she considers this one of her best pieces. She's probably more proud of the highlight video she made stealing infernal drake with Twitch.

EDIT #2: A few people asked what her inspiration/reference was. It was this picture (no idea who the artist is, she just found it by googling poros and kirby): http://i.imgur.com/XZWyLrq.jpg

EDIT #3: Another poster knows who the artist of the reference picture is: https://twitter.com/kakip200
