| New Idea: Weekly Map Discussion #1: Braxis Holdout Posted: 15 May 2017 09:15 AM PDT We've been seeing a lot of map rotation discussion, and requests to blizzard, so I figured I would change it up. Lets start discussing what makes certain maps/heroes good and bad. Talking Points: Which heroes excel on this map? Which heroes should never be picked? What are some niche tricks you can use for this map? How do you feel about this map's objectives/camps/boss? What's your favourite/least favourite part about the map? Aesthetically, do you like or dislike the map? [link] [comments] | ||

| HGC Meta Breakdown: Genji Debut Week (Spoilers HGC Games) Posted: 15 May 2017 09:23 AM PDT So the HGC games this week were… interesting to put it mildly. Most teams already locked in their seeding for playoffs and crucible so there weren't many impactful match ups. Some teams even opted to let their players play off-role and to use some off-meta compositions (looking at you, MVP Black). The one bright spot from this week is that Genji was played in nearly every game so there is some good insight into potential builds and impact of Genjis. We'll also follow up on double support compositions, the strategy that refuses to die. And we'll also examine Chromie's new role as a contested pick in certain regions. And finally, we'll take a lengthy preview of the HGC playoffs this upcoming weekend and I'll give you a VOD from the last weekend to check out. Note: This post contains spoilers for HGC China, Korea, Europe, North American games from May 8th to May 13th. GenjiWell saying that Genji made an appearance this week in HGC is an understatement. With very little on the line for playoffs, this week became the "everyone and their dog playing Genji week". Because of the oddity of some of the games, Genji's win rate probably doesn't mean very much for his competitive viability, but we got to see a lot of different Genji players as well as a variety of builds. Here's the breakdown of Genji play and different builds from this past week. Note: games in bold designate wins HGC China (0 wins – 0 Losses) 0 bans**Genji was not playable in China this week. HGC Korea (3 wins – 11 losses) 2 bansMVP Black vs GG Game 1, Game 2, Game 3, Game 4 MVP Miracle vs L5 Game 1, Game 2, Game 3, Game 4 Mighty vs Blossom Game 1, Game 2, Game 3 Raven vs Blossom Game 1, Game 2, Game 3 HGC Europe ( 3 wins – 1 Loss) 1 banFnatic vs Synergy Game 2, Game 3 Liquid vs beGenius Game 1 Team Expert vs Playing Ducks Game 2 HGC North America (6 wins – 4 Losses) 0 bansTeam Freedom vs Gale Force eSports Game 2, Game 3 Naventic vs Superstars Game 1, Game 2, Game 3 B-Step vs Tempo Storm Game 2 Team 8 vs No Tommorrow Game 1, Game 3, Game 4 Conclusion: So Genji was quite popular this week in HGC. Genji had a 100% pick and ban rate in HGC Korea and most often Genji was taken first pick. HGC Korea didn't do any favors to Genji's win rate as he only had a 21% win rate in the region. But most of this was caused by the fact that teams like MVP Black and GG rotated Genji players every game and even had their dedicated support players play the cyborg ninja. HGC Europe played Genji the least of the regions with a pick and ban rate of 28%, but had a 75% win rate on the hero. HGC North America also joined the fun with a 71% pick and ban rate and 60% win rate. Even though Korea seemed to opt for a "have fun" strategy over a "must win" strategy this week, I can still see the pick being popular in the region going forward. South Korea values heroes with high mobility and especially those with dashes or blinks (ETC, Tyrael, Kharazim, Li Ming, Zeratul, Tychus). Additionally, Genji's high skill cap affords players with high mechanical skill plenty of opportunities for flashy plays. The teams that had the most success with Genji were the ones who devoted other resources to setting up Genji for big plays. Pairing Uther's Divine Shield or Tyrael's Sanctification with Genji's Dragon Blade heroic was quite a lethal combination. Other teams attempted to pair Genji's X-Strike heroic into "wombo combo" type strategies trying to X-Strike on top of ETC Mosh Pits, but that was less impactful overall. As for Genji builds, there was quite a lot of variation in the talents and heroics that players opted to use this week. It seems that HGC Genji players were still experimenting with which abilities to power up. The most common builds were those that opted to empower Genji's Shuriken ability(Q) and builds that empowered his Swift Strike(E), but there were a few players that took all the Deflect(W) talents instead. At level 1, Agile Dismount was far and away the most common pick with Swift as the Wind in close second. Shuriken Mastery at level 4 was probably the most successful talent taken but Strike at the Heart and Dragon Claw also saw play. Level 7 is Genji's most versatile talent tier with a lot of variation in picks. Perfect Defense was the most popular choice, but players were able to take Cyber Shield against ability power teams and Dodge against auto-attack heavy compositions with good success. I would say that Dragonblade was the most impactful heroic choice, but plenty of Genji players did opt for X-Strike this week. Oddly enough, X-Strike seemed to be used often to escape out of situations rather than to engage or provide burst damage in team fights. At level 13, Shingan and Flow Like Water were the preferred talent choices. Shingan was very successful on maps were Genji needed extra damage to kill summoned objectives and bosses as well as providing more damage to attack structures. Level 16, also had some variation, but Reflect and Steady Blade were both picked frequently. At level 20, The Dragon Becomes Me was a must pick for Dragonblade Genjis as the talent almost seemed to allow Genji to have Dragonblade up for the entirety of team fights. For those that didn't take the Dragonblade heroic, many opted for the shuriken pierce with Sharpened Stars and a few took Zanshin for better deflect damage. Most common/most sucessful HGC Genji Build All in all, Genji this week wasn't exactly a "world beater" hero, but there is reason to believe that we will continue to see the hero played competitively. He didn't seem like a pick that could fit in every composition successfully and needs support from teammates to be the most successful. I think that if we see Genji going forward, it will most certainly be on teams that are built around him with heroes like Abathur, Uther, and Tyrael. Double SupportAfter the underwhelming first week for double support compositions with a whopping 38% win rate globally, some teams still insisted on still running the composition this week. Surprisingly, double support compositions went 7 – 1 this week and Team expert in HGC Europe even netted a win running a triple support composition with Malfurion, Auriel, Lili, Sonya, and Arthas. It appears that some teams followed the advice from last week and narrowed down the map pool that they would run the strategy on. Double support saw the most success this week on maps that didn't prioritize globals such as Tomb of the Spider Queen and Battlefield of Eternity. Double support even had a good showing on maps that had centralized objectives that led to brawls like Sky Temple and Infernal Shrines. This hot streak has brought the global win rate of double support compositions up to a respectable 57%. Once the latest balance patch nerfs to Li Li hit HGC, I imagine double support will pop up less often, but it seems like this strategy isn't going away any time soon. ChromieSince HGC moved to the HOTS 2.0 patch, Chromie has seen an uptick in competitive play, especially in the Western regions. The new patch saw Chromie go from a 9% pick and ban rate globally to a 16% pick and ban rate. And in North America and Europe, the regions Chromie is used most often, the pick and ban rate went from 13% to 25%. After this increase in popularity for the adorable Gnomish dragon mage, let's take a look at how well Chromie has done competitively these past 2 weeks. HGC China (0 wins – 0 Losses) 0 BansHGC Korea (0 wins – 2 Losses) 0 BansHGC Europe (5 wins – 2 Losses) 2 BansHGC North America (4 wins – 7 Losses) 7 BansConclusions: Chromie has definitely become a hot pick in the Western regions. In HGC Europe, Chromie has a 71% win rate, but only a 15% pick and ban rate. On the other hand, Chromie in HGC North America has a 40% pick and ban rate, but a 36% win rate. For Europe and North America, Chromie has become a contested pick on pretty specific maps. Chromie has been preferred on Towers of Doom, Tomb of the Spider Queen, and Dragon Shire where she is able to safely stop opponents from channeling objectives. Additionally, she is a strong pick on Braxis Holdout in the 4 man lane bringing strong wave clear and a kit that counters opposing compositions that pick a Guldan or Sgt. Hammer. Chromie's heroic Slowing Sands also allows an incredible amount of zone control which is best used on maps which have control points (Dragon Shire, Sky Temple, Braxis Holdout) or lots obstacles and narrow corridors (Battlefield of Eternity, Tomb of the Spider Queen). Chromie also was a favorite hero to pair with assassins like Greymane and Genji that can reliably secure kills after Chromie lands her abilities on high priority backline targets. Now that Greymane has an 88% pick and ban rate in Europe and North America, it leads me to believe that Chromie will continue to be a strong synergistic pick on her best maps. Playoff PictureHOTS and HGC fans, the time has finally arrived. We get to experience our first HGC playoffs this weekend and I, for one, am very excited to see how the teams from South Korea, Europe, and North America will raise their game in order to book their ticket to the prestigious Mid-Season Brawl in order to compete against the best in the world for a $250,000 prize pool. The teams with the best record in each region have already qualified and are inactive for the week. So we won't see anything out of L5, Fnatic, or Tempo Storm for a while. That leaves the #2 through #6 teams from the regular season to battle it out for the last qualifying spot. For those unfamiliar with the HGC playoff format, the tournament is a single-elimination stepladder format. This means that the #4 and #5 seeds will face off in a best of five and the winner of that match then plays the #3rd seed in a best of five. This continues until the final match with the #1 seed to determine which team wins the playoffs and secure a spot in the international tournament this summer. The format is uncommon is sports, but it can definitely set up some exciting scenarios if a team is able to make a run from the play-in game to the finals. Now a lot can change as these teams boot camp and buckle down to practice, but let's take a look at the field in Korea, Europe, and North America and look at their recent form in Group Stage 2 as well as their records against all the potential match ups and make some predictions of how it could all shake up. HGC South Korea PlayoffsPlayoff Seed (Group stage 2 record against other Korean playoff teams) #1 MVP Black (12 maps won – 2 maps lost) 80% win rate Round 1: #4 MVP Miracle vs #5 GG [Friday, May 19th 2:00 AM PDT/ 11:00 AM CEST] Round 2: (Match 1 Winner) vs #3 Mighty [Friday, May 19th 4:30 AM PST/ 3:30 PM CEST] Round 3: (Match 2 Winner) vs #2 Tempest [Saturday, May 20th 2:00 AM PDT/ 11:00 AM CEST] Round 4: (Match 3 Winner) vs #1 MVP Black [Sunday May 21st 2:00 AM PDT/ 11:00 AM CEST] Thoughts: Even though MVP Miracle and Mighty have an even record versus each other, I think MVP Miracle will win the match because of their improved form from Stage 1 to Stage 2. MVP Miracle rarely gets swept, even by the top 2 teams, and their ability to take series to game 5s make me think we could see an exciting run out of MVP Miracle this tournament. I think MVP Miracle beats GG and Mighty. Even though Tempest has the better record against MVP Miracle, it's hard to overlook Tempest's loss to the worst team in the region this last week even if Tempest wasn't completely invested in the series. I think that game goes close, but MVP Miracle continues the well... miracle run. A final game between MVP Miracle and their sister team MVP Black would be an incredible story, but I think that's where MVP Miracle's dream tournament ends. With an impressive form in Group Stage 2 and dominant records against the other playoff teams, it's hard to expect MVP Black losing to any team in the final. They just seem a tier above the rest of the bracket. Final Prediction: MVP Black wins spot in Mid-Season Brawl HGC Europe PlayoffsPlayoff Seed (Group stage 2 record against other EU playoff teams) Round 1: #4 Playing Ducks vs #5 Tricked eSports [Friday, May 19 9:00 AM PDT/ 6:00 PM CEST] Round 2: (Round 1 Winner) vs #3 Team expert [Friday, May 19th 11:30 AM PDT/ 8:30 PM CEST] Round 3: (Round 2 Winner) vs #2 Team Dignitas [Saturdau, May 20th 11:30 AM PDT/ 8:30 CEST] Round 4: (Round 3 Winner) vs #1 Team Liquid [Sunday, May 21st 11:30 PDT/ 8:30 PM CEST] Thoughts: Team expert had a respectable finish to the stage 2 by taking Dignitas to a game 5, but I think Playing Ducks will end up winning the series. I expect whoever makes it out of round 1 will probably lose to Team expert. In round 3, expect Dignitas to emerge victorious. For the final round, I think that the only reason Team Liquid achieved the number 1 seed is because of their dominant Group Stage 1. In the second stage, I feel like their form has definitely deteriorated and I think Dignitas is the best team in the playoffs right now. Dignitas take care of Team Liquid and punch their ticket to the Mid-Season Brawl. Final Prediction: Team Dignitas wins spot for Mid-Season Brawl North America HGC PlayoffsPlayoff Seed (Group stage 2 record against other NA playoff teams) Round 1: #4 B-Step vs #5 Team Freedom [Friday, May 19th 2:00 PM PDT/ 11:00 PM CEST] Round 2: (Round 1 Winner) vs #3 Superstars [Friday, May 19th 4:30 PDT/ Saturday, May 20th 1:30 AM CEST] Round 3: (Round 2 Winner) vs #2 Team8 [Saturday, May 20th 2:00 PM PDT/ 11:00PM CEST] Round 4: (Round 3 Winner) vs #1 Gale Force eSports [Sunday, May 21st 2:00 PM PDT/ 11:00 PM CEST] Thoughts: If you had asked me to predict this series last week, I probably would've been fairly confident that Team Freedom would win, but their inability to close out games this week vs Gale Force makes me wonder how they will be able to make in game decisions in a high pressure environment especially against the pressure tested B-Step line up. I think this is more of a toss-up even with B-Step's lackluster group stage 2 form, but my gut tells me Team Freedom will step up and take the series. I think Superstars have a pretty good recent form and will beat Team Freedom. Team8 stumbled a little bit at the beginning of group stage 2 after a dominant group stage 1, but I think they have fixed their issues and their win streak to close out stage 2 gives them the confidence and momentum to beat Superstars and move on to the finals. Unfortunately for Team8 or whoever makes it to the finals, Gale Force looks really strong right now. And fortunate for Gale Force, the only teams that have taken a game off of them in group stage 2 aren't in this playoff bracket. I think Gale Force continues to refine their unique style and strategies and that proves too much for Team8. I think Gale Force, deservedly, moves on to the Mid-Season Brawl. Final Prediction: Gale Force eSports wins spot in Mid-Season Brawl These are only my predictions for what will happen in the playoffs. How do you think this weekend will really go? Next Time on HGC Meta BreakdownTonight, Monday May 15th at 6:00 pm PDT, the NA HGC – Open Division Playoffs begins, and, following the conclusion on Tuesday night, we will know which teams will have a chance to join the HGC. Check out all the action on https://www.twitch.tv/arcane8. Next week, I'll profile the amateur teams from NA and EU as well as the HGC teams in the crucible and breakdown what to expect. We'll also follow up on the results from the playoffs and any surprises that popped up over the weekend. VOD to WatchAs I mentioned earlier in the post, there weren't a lot of great games across the different regions. So instead I want to link what I thought was an interesting series to end the group stage and that was Team8 vs No Tomorrow. The reason I found it entertaining is because Team8 decided to play with Former League of Legends Pro Marcus 'Dyrus' Hill. For me personally, the early League of Legends scene was where I began seriously following esports and Dyrus was one of my favorite pros. Now I know that Team8 inviting Dyrus to play with them was probably a gimmick to increase viewership for their game, but I guess I'm a sucker for gimmicks. So here's the VOD and be sure to check out the conclusion to Tryhard For Good Charity Streams this week: [link] [comments] | ||

| After 6 months, Varian's multi-class status is still a problem Posted: 14 May 2017 11:08 PM PDT 1) Where are the designation changes for the rest of the characters that are clearly multi-class? Artanis, Tyrande, Kharazim, just to name a few. It's been exactly 6 months since Varian's release. In that time no new multi-class characters have been released, and no characters have been re-classified. 2) There are plenty of tanks that have DPS builds. There's nothing inherent to Varian that makes him a multi-class character that's different from any other current character that can apply themselves to multiple roles. It's not like you receive an entirely different skill tree at level 1 if you want to build towards one spec. 3) It's an obvious problem for quickmatch, as noted by the number of threads we see on the subject every week. It's been long enough. Can we just drop the multi-class tag or apply it all characters that deserve it? [link] [comments] | ||

| Just got the game last night - thoroughly impressed Posted: 15 May 2017 08:23 AM PDT I have been a DotA player for the past few years, not really getting any better in my ability to play the game to to a hindrance I unconsciously put on myself, and my brother urged me to try HoTS. I played about 5 quick matches last night with him and it was really fun. I like the fact that there are shared levels and no items, making it so your team has no underpowered heroes. I played Abathur for 3 rounds, and I really like the remote control aspect of it, where you don't have to get stressed out about seeing multiple heroes gank you. The cloning of friendly heroes was fun to play, as you have to learn how to play other heroes. Next, I played Malfurion. Malfurion is closer to "my type of hero," which is a nuking/initiating support, and it was interesting. I got quite a few kills, and secured a ton more due to my root entrapment. His heals were amazing, and I almost survived the whole entire team by running away and healing myself. Lastly, I played Stitches. Stiches was fun, and I have a lot of experience with Pudge from DotA 2, so it transferred nicely. This was the most fun match of the night. Being able to initiate was a ton of fun, and the talents I selected were revolving around getting healed. The most amount of trouble I had was from a assassin that kept turning invisible and silencing me, doing about 20% of my health late game. Overall, I really like this game, and will play it a lot during the coming summer. [link] [comments] | ||

| Came for the D.Va OW Skin, Stayed for the Game! Posted: 15 May 2017 08:40 PM PDT I usually don't play Moba type games, as they aren't really my favored style of gameplay. I played DotA and LoL back when they were still new, and just... Couldn't get into it. Lately, though, I've been having a blast in HotS. I originally just downloaded it to earn the Officer D.Va skin. But once I played the game for a few matches in my mission to earn said skin, I discovered that it's actually a lot of fun... And I'm at least half decent at playing Support (specifically Healer in the form of Lucio). Blizzard really hit the mark with this game. I've even begun playing the game regularly, sometimes for my weekly Livestream on YouTube. I did have a question, though. In regards to the Quickplay system and queuing for that, or even for Ranked, what's the skill curve like? Is it as bad as Overwatch where there's a massive skill cliff between QP and Comp, or is it a more "noob" friendly curve, where you can jump into ranked as soon as you've gotten used to the game in QuickPlay?
