I got matched with a new player who is probably about to uninstall...

Posted: 02 May 2017 02:26 PM PDT

He was in my team, and he last picked Zeratul. Not optimal, but I was already on Tyrael and we had a duo playing Auriel & Valla, so it was fine.

We were against a 5- stack that went for a nice Muradin, Illidan, Rehgar, Abathur, Kerrigan composition. Obviously on comms, given to how Abathur responded and how they always collapsed near perfectly.

Zeratul went for the infamous Cleave build, with Q talents on 1, 4 and 16, Double Blink on 7, and the extremely dangerous Shadow Assault ultimate.

It took until the level 4 talent pick for Auriel to call him out. "Omfg not another idiot troll", "All those retards with new heroes they suck at", "report". I may have to mention that Zeratul has died twice until now in the top lane, where he was with me (Tyrael) against Illidan & Abathur. Basically, he vastly underestimated Illidans damage output and self sustain.

Come ultimates, and the real flaming begins. He picked Shadow Assault. I get it, it sounds insane to have dashes on your auto attacks! Especially against that Illidan that killed you 4 times so far, because he is so fast! Far more useful than a bubble that makes the enemy immune to damage!

Well, as you can imagine, Valla and Auriel went absolutely berserk on the poor dude. Yes, he was a bad player. Yes, his talent build sucked. But damn, the words that were written... (well, after Zeratul said "I heard this game had a nice community.... :(" I told him to mute, and that not everybody is like that, and he stopped replying. )

As you could imagine, the game ended soon enough, with spam pings, shooting skillshots at Zeratul, and occasionally typing vile messages. It was an absolutely disgraceful situation.

So, I wanted to chat with him to make sure he know some people are assholes, but most are really nice, but he signed off immediatly. I checked Zeratuls profile after the game. He had 2 vs AI games played, and then went into Unranked. This was his first match with other players.

Blizzard, Please, DO NOT match your new players with Diamond MMR players in UD. Also DO NOT match your new players against people playing a coordinated 5-stack in Diamond MMR - They'll have an absolutely dreadful experience, people get frustrated at them, and it'll do nothing but increase the odds they never come back. I am 100% confident we lost a nice guy and a friendly player today, just because of shitty matchmaking, and people feeling at liberty to be absolute assholes because of it.

Dear Danielw2100, If you ever read this, I am the Tyrael (Yellow Angel dude) you played with on Cursed Hollow, if you ever feel like bringing up the courage to play this game again, please send me a PM, I'll teach you the basics and I'll be your personal support :)!

Thanks for reading.

Open Letter to Blizzard on the Public Disclosure of Loot Chest Content Randomisation

Posted: 02 May 2017 04:47 AM PDT

Dear Blizzard in general and Heroes Developers in particular,

with the launch of Heroes 2.0 and the excitement of our first dozens (or hundreds) of Loot Chests still fresh in our memories, there is an opportunity for you to go above and beyond the call of duty and show the industry and your community your exceptionality. I call upon you to publicly disclose the mechanism behind the generation of virtual items from Loot Chests even if current regulations in all regions do not require you to do so.

Regulations in China

On May 1st, new regulations in China went into effect that requires game publishers to disclose the probabilities of drawing virtual items from Loot Boxes and similar mechanisms. To quote a translated section of the regulation:

2.6 – Online game publishers shall promptly publicly announce information about the name, property, content, quantity, and draw/forge probability of all virtual items and services that can be drawn/forge on the official website or a dedicated draw probability webpage of the game. The information on draw probability shall be true and effective.

Community effort

Over time, and with sufficient community effort, the odds of these randomised item generatiors are determined to a pretty good level of accuracy. Historically, mechanisms like "Pity Counters" or "Pity Timers" do not remain secret for long. Humans are naturally curious, pattern-seeking machines. And once a motivated subset of your community figures something out, platforms like reddit or dedicated wikis are employed to disseminate this knowledge quickly and persistently.

Is secrecy necessary?

Opening a Loot Chest is meant to evoke excitement and joy over the items you received, or hunger for more Loot Chests if you did not get the items you were after. I would argue that knowing the odds in no way detracts from this experience. When we play a fair card or dice game, the odds are knowable or at least calculable. We still enjoy these games and get excited over drawing a pair of aces in Poker or rolling a 7 in Settlers of Catan.

Closing remarks

I would like to close this letter with a quote from your mission statement [US / EU, depending on maintenance one or both links work]:

Lead responsibly

Our products and practices can affect not only our employees and players -- but the industry at large. As one of the world's leading game companies, we're committed to making ethical decisions, always keeping our players in mind, and setting a strong example of professionalism and excellence at all times.

This is your chance to set a responsible example for the industry at large. Do not wait around for legislation to force your hand in this matter. Show the gaming communities around the globe that randomised reward mechanisms do not have to rely on secrecy to be viable and effective.

Sincerely,

a long-time player of Blizzard games

MVP screen should be instant, show all heroes, and allow everyone to up vote whomever they want

The people botting in QM for the OW skin should not only be banned in HoTS but also OW - or at the very least not receive the skin.

Posted: 02 May 2017 06:00 PM PDT

I've had 3 matches today in quick-match where there was an obvious botting player on my team. You can tell by their movements and how similar pattern they have. Throughout the entire match they say nothing until the very end they say "gg".

It's really a major slap in the face to the hots player base in my opinion.

Chu8 finishes Bronze 5 to Master with a 75.5% win rate in 163 total games.

Posted: 02 May 2017 06:33 PM PDT

Some interesting stats on Chu's climb:

  • These stats include placements, which of course needed to be tanked somewhat to achieve Bronze 5. 163 total games were spent below Master, the 164th game took him to Master.

  • Including the final game - 124 wins, 40 losses.

  • 100 percent win rate with Valla (11-0) and Sylvanus (9-0) as well as half a dozen other heroes with less games played.

  • 100 percent win rate Blackheart's Bay (7), Warhead Junction (6), and Haunted Mines (4). 90 percent win rate on Garden of Terror (9 and 1). 87% win rate on Braxis Holdout (13-2).

  • 81 percent win rate with both DPS and Specialist.

  • All of this was done on a limited hero pool, with less than half of the characters levelled to 5.

Blizzard really needs to get rid of the map rotation

Posted: 02 May 2017 08:15 AM PDT

With the addition of Hanamura (a pretty alright map in my opinion) Heroes of the Storm has a total of 13 maps not counting the custom games or tutorial options. And just recently with the drop of Heroes 2.0 we were gifted with 20 free heroes from a group of our choosing. The nexus challenge once again brings people in from Overwatch, the free heroes and lootboxes will draw in many more new players from other places, and the addition of Genji and soon to be D.va has the whole community pretty freaking excited!

With all this going on, why the heck did Blizzard limit our map rotation to 3 maps? And yes I know there is around 5 or so out on rotation, but I swear to Jeff Kaplan that the only maps I ever get to play are Towers of Doom, Cursed Hollow, and Braxis Holdout. Sky Temple, one of my favorite maps, comes around every 6 games or so, and Hanamura I see even less somehow. With all the crap Blizzard has been getting about it, they would be insane not to change it soon.

And I know it's not everyone's opinion.... but why is one of the only maps I get to play anymore Towers of Doom?! My least favorite map and I have it every other game. I love Sky Temple and Hanamura is fun, but I never see them! It's like a map rotation within a map rotation! Maybe this is a sign, we must gather Blizzards tributes, and earn their favor!

Posted: 02 May 2017 06:28 AM PDT

Wait....this game is good

Posted: 02 May 2017 02:00 PM PDT

So my friends and I all play league together and have for years. HOTS has always been kind of a joke to us when it came out. None of us had ever played it and we just assumed it wasn't a great game based off videos we had watched when it first came out. I saw Scarra ( a league streamer) playing it the other day so I decided why not i'll download it and try it out.

WTF this game is actually super fun. The different maps keep things fresh and my god the heroes are so diverse. Heroes like Abathur and Murky and a few others are just such an interesting twist on a MOBA.

The way your team levels up all at once I like and dislike its kinda weird when you can get fed in lane and it doesn't have as big an impact, but its also nice to have everyone on equal footing. Not having to actually last hit the minions is nice. It's just so freeing to not worry about cs and blow up the wave.

The game certainly feels more geared to casuals considering you don't have to cs or pick out items/runes/masteries but that just makes it more fun so who cares.

Now I just have to convince my friends this game is actually great because they don't believe me

Players from Overwatch purposely throwing games?

Posted: 02 May 2017 05:14 PM PDT

Ive been in 3 matches now where Overwatch players I was grouped with for the event asked me why I was trying to win? They assumed everyone was throwing matches to try and complete the event faster.
Yeah i'll report them, yeah maybe they get banned from HoTs, but they don't care.
Blizzard needs to remove the rewards for this event in HoTs AND Overwatch for people who get banned. This is NOT ok.

Why so few banners?

Posted: 02 May 2017 10:56 AM PDT

There is no outcry about it, but why on earth are there no banners for half of the heroes?

Neutral WoW characters have nothing. Most don't fit under few race/sides provided. Diablo characters have very little. wizard has few options, but that is one hero. It's even worse in any epic skin.

Is this a priority for Blizzard? just asking because it's the one 2.0 feature that seems barely half way complete. Few heroes lack a spray, but banners are always visible and it's sad when I have nothing for my pretty heroes.

Blizzard, by matching players under 500 games with players with 2000-3000 games and above, you ruin experiance for all.

Posted: 02 May 2017 07:00 PM PDT

sorry for my bad english :(

And maybie that was not big problem before Heroes 2.0 because there was not that much new players so people didnt pay atttention to much when that happened (they said "fck this matchmaking" and continue to next game). But if you expect this game to grow (and we all expect) it will happen much more often (and it already do), so pls protect both new and old players.

In my experiance (6500 games), players with 500 games are still "new". And maybie they have good mechanics (from other moba games) they make sometimes very bad decisions for this game (game costing), their priotity for objective is sometimes lower than it should be, they just lack experiance in this game. Those players sometimes think that they know everything (because they was very good in their old moba games) so even if you want to say on nice whay what should we do together as team late game, they start to argue, just because they think they are best in this moba too.

Also, watching Scarra stream, I can see all problems this game have with matchmaking. Scarra already has ban button (even above Dunktrain!) just because he played with him. And while i see he has game mechanics, he just lack experiance to be good heroes of the storm player (for now). He still learn which heroes exsists in HotS! :) And keep in mind, he is Scarra, but other new players are not! And most of players will not learn that fast as him.

I just want to say that blizzard should create new algorithm that will adapt on (we all hope) continuous player base growth in long term, and protect both new and old players - matching players both by games played and MMR will be good long term solution.

April 20th / 25th Update - 11 Days Later

Posted: 02 May 2017 04:42 PM PDT

Previously on Reddit....

Back again with another update. This one is a two-parter, combining data from the April 20th update and the April 25th update into one massive post!

Disclaimer (please read!):

The hotfix update on April 28th threw off the numbers for that date, but the rest of the days should be relatively sound. As usual, keep in mind that my numbers may differ slightly from Hotslogs's "official" figures as the site regularly updates older information as more games are added. Therefore, our data may not match up perfectly, but it should give a generally accurate view of how the week progressed.

So, here's our new status after a prolonged period:

Anub'arak: 57.3% (0% since April 20th)

Auriel: 49.6% (+1.9% since April 20th)

Cassia: 50.5% (+0.8% since April 20th)

E.T.C.: 43.8% (+0.6% since April 20th)

Genji: 46.1% (new hero, +0.4% since April 25th)

Greymane: 50.3% (-0.6% since April 20th)

Li Li: 54.3% (+5.3% since April 20th)

Nazeebo: 53.6% (-0.3% since April 20th)

Stitches: 47.6% (+3.4% since April 20th)

Tassadar: 40.7% (-4.9% since April 20th)

Uther: 50.8% (+4.1% since April 25th)

Valeera: 47.5% (-3.1% since April 25th)

Zarya: 49.8% (-1.4% since April 20th)

Here is a link to the spreadsheet with the data I've collected for the original April 20th patch, and here is a link to the spreadsheet with the data I've collected for the April 25th patch.

Initial evaluations:

1) Anub'arak is still king, but this surprises no one.

2) E.T.C. is still too weak. Again, no surprises here.

3) Positive changes towards balanced for Auriel, Cassia, Greymane, Nazeebo, Stitches.

4) Tassadar and Zarya continue to suffer because of their competitive prominence, though Zarya has recovered some of her early losses. Similarly, Valeera has gained back a little ground but is still now sub-50% primarily due to nerfs to address her prominence in Quick Match.

5) New Uther is a beast, and surprisingly pretty well balanced to boot.

6) Li Li is now pretty much confirmed to have been buffed a bit too much.

Also, if you haven't checked out my special project yet, please do so! I think it's exactly what some of you have been asking for!

"Escaped death X times", a stupid end of game award ?

Posted: 02 May 2017 03:33 AM PDT

I'm new to HotS, I really like the awards, the details about the contributions, the percentages, etc. But come on, how can "escaped death x times" be a good thing ?

I played with a Genji who got this award in the top5 screen, even if he was statistically the worst player of both teams, even if he was one of those who died the most. This award boosts the ego of someone who actually did nothing.

Taking AI out of the event is the biggest mistake Blizzard could make.

Posted: 02 May 2017 03:11 PM PDT

Now for the duration of this event there is gonna be a flood of the OW players just grouping and ruining QM for the skin. I don't get why they would do this, it just seems short sighted and silly.

I get that they didn't want people to abuse the AI to get the stuff but to be honest it is better than turning the whole game into a toxic mess of AFK and feeders who just want the round to be over with so they can tick off 1 of the 5 games they are being forced to play just to get a skin in an unrelated game that they can't get any other way.

Artwork: Nazeebo's spooky display of abilities

Posted: 02 May 2017 10:27 AM PDT

For the past 4 days (or 96 hours) I've not been grinding ladder but rather pencil, paper and Photoshop. As a starting community illustrator, I felt that I needed a promotional art piece. Something flashy and out there. I decided to give some love to one of my favorite heroes in the game. The witchdoctor himself, Nazeebo.

Great job on the Christmas skin Blizzard, It's nightmare fuel and also inspiration fuel for me.

If you're a (starting) community member that wants to make content as well, and you're interested in giving your production, tournament, charity event, live stream/youtube channel, website or any other outlet some illustrative flair, contact me at the email address listed down below. There's an Abathur bug in which the locusts don't attack mercs.

Posted: 02 May 2017 08:19 AM PDT

So it should be that if I aggro a camp and summon locusts, the locusts will attack the mercs, now they just wander off to lane leaving me behind.

As an Overwatch player, the lack of voice comms kills ranked for me

Posted: 02 May 2017 11:25 AM PDT

Like many people, I've come over to HotS for the current 2.0 patch and promotion. This game is absolutely amazing and I'm a bit sad I haven't put more time into it until now.

With that said, I'm very much missing the ability to communicate with other players via voice comms. While the ease of use in Overwatch is a double edged sword (toxicity, negativity, flaming, etc.), I think the pros greatly outweigh the cons. I'd love to have the option to use voice especially during ranked games.

Is there some reason Heroes doesn't have voice communication built into the game that I'm missing?

Warcraft Hero Lore as fast as possible - with links for further learning!

Posted: 02 May 2017 09:04 AM PDT

So, here's my attempt at this helpful write up for new players. Please note Warcraft lore is two decades and like 20 (+) books long, so... I had to make some SUPERCUTS and only included bits important to our HOTS characters, and it still came out very long.

All links lead to Nobbel.

Disclaimer : events are NOT neccesarily in chronological order. People aware of the lore of Warcraft will notice many missing pieces of story. I did not include anything not neccesariy to know a character.

In the universe of warcraft there existed a pantheon of godlike beings named the Titans. These guys went around and destroyed demons. They did their best to travel from planet to planet and maintain order in the cosmos. Eventually their greatest warrior fell into corruption - he decided to lead the demons of the universe in a burning crusade to destroy all existance.

Azeroth was a planet of great destiny, although looking at it right now, you wouldn't be able to tell. Elemental forces like Ragnaros, the Firelord raged in an endless war and chaos was amock. Dark, evil beings known as the Old Gods had also infested the planet - they spread madness and corruption. The Titans had come to Azeroth and ordered it. They imprisoned the elementals and the Old Gods, and they also killed one. However this turned out to be a mistake as it created the Well of Eternity, a massive pool of power that would forever influence Azeroth. Before leaving the planet to tend to others, the Titans left in charge five dragonflights empowered to maintain order. Of these 5 flights, there was the Bronze Dragonflight, from which comes Chromie, Guardian of Time.

Much time passed and the Well of Eternity drew the attention of trolls - primordial inhabitants of Azeroth. The well caused the trolls to evolve into Elves, wise and powerful and graceful beings. However, the well also drew the attention of the Burning Legion led by the fallen titan. Much stuff happened leading to the eventual destruction of the well of eternity. It violently collapsed into itself, shattering the great landmass of Azeroth into many smaller pieces.

The Elven people swore to never again allow arcane magic to destroy them like so, except for Illidan, the Betrayer who in his hubris had secretly kept 7 vials of the waters of eternity and used them to create a new, smaller well. For this he was imprisoned.

Meanwhile in a different world named Draenor, the Burning Legion had corrupted the native Orcs and basically caused so much shit that the solution was to blow up the entire place. Before the planet was destroyed however, many orcs had travelled to Azeroth through a portal. Amongst these was Gul'dan, Darkness Incarnate - a fiendish warlock, Gull'dan dealt with demons and in fact served the Burning Legion. It was he who had caused the corruption of his people in his endless chase for power, and he died betrayed by his master - surrounded by demons.

Ten thousand years passed since the events of the Well of Eternity, and the Burning Legion begun their second invasion attempt of Azeroth. Malfurion, the first Druid, Tyrande, High Priestess of Elune, and Jaina, not random Mage Chick joined forces to stop them. They were not powerful enough however and Illidan, the Betrayer was released from his prison to help fight the Legion. He DID help fight the Legion, but in his overzealous chase for power, he sought after and absorbed the skull of Gul'dan, which held massive demonic power. This transformed Illidan into a half demon, half elf, and while he did help stop the Legion.... he was eternally banished from his land for the atrocity he has become.

The young Prince of Lordaeron went down a terribly dark path, manipulated by demons, he became Arthas, the Lich King and begun a rampage of undeath to conquor all of Azeroth. In his sights was the elven city of Quel'thalas, home of the elves who chose to continue practicing the arcane after the collapse of the Well of Eternity. Kael'thas Sunstrider, prince of the Sin'dorei, clashed with Arthas, but eventually not even he could stand in the path of the Lich King. So it came that the Sin'dorei were scattered and amongst them, ranger general Sylvanas Windrunner was slain and raised into a Banshee. Uther, the Lightbringer had also stood in Arthas' way, and perished. Even Illidan had clashed with Arthas on his chase for the skull of Gul'Dan, and even he was no match. However no king rules forever and so it was that Sylvanas regained her free will and her soul and became Sylvanas, the Banshee Queen, leader of the Forsaken, and she, together with most of Azeroth (Specifically Muradin, the forces of the Alliance, and the forces of the Horde) stood against the Lich King and he was eventually defeated upon his throne in the icy land of Northrend. It is quite tragic that Uther, the Lightbringer, Arthas' mentor, and Jaina, now even less random mage, his good friend and lover, had to take part in his destruction. Noteworthy is that in Northrend, Arthas encountered a race of inscetoid creatures. He waged war against these creatures and eventually won due to the actions of Anub'arak, the Traitor King.

Thrall, the World Shaman was one of the few Orcs who remained after the first war between Humans and Orcs, which was the result of the bloodlusty, corrupted Orcs leaving Draenor and travelling to Azeroth. He was a mere slave before a Human who trusted him freed him from his masters. With the help of Rexxar, Half Ogre and Chen Stormstout Thrall was able to raise and unite the HORDE, a force of the Tauren, the Darkspear Trolls, the Forsaken, and others.

In the chilly land of Dun Morough, the Dwarves of Ironforge, who were composed of the Bronzebeard clan and the Wildhammer clan (from which hails Falsted), dwelt in their great forge-city embedded into a mountain. The Dwarves were part of the Alliance, led by Varian Wrynn, King of Stormwind. But Varian was missing. In a plot to destroy the Alliance, Varian was struck by a terrible curse and split in two parts of himself. We only care about Lo'gosh, the violent and powerful gladiator half who spent years fighting alongside Valeera Sanguinar for Rehgar Earthfury in an arena. It was eventually so that Varian was reformed and went on to rule the Alliance. Speaking of walls and building them, there's this Greymane guy who was king of a seperate Human kingdom, outside of Stormwind. When the Alliance fought the scourge in the third war, Greymane had hidden himself and his people away, refusing to offer aid. It was only later that he came crawling back and joined the Alliance, after Sylvanas, the Banshee Queen threatened to destroy his people.

So, this is my attempt at a cohesive story involving all characters from the Warcraft part of HOTS. Now for characters that do not tie into eachothers' stories:

Medivh, the Last Guardian. The Guardian was a spearhead made manifest. A single mage endowed with the power of a larger council of mages. The Guardian kept Azeroth safe from demons.

Captured by Elves and tortured, Zul'jin grew a deep hatred for them. As time passed, he rose to become leader of the Amani Trolls. You want axe?

So, in the goblin city of Ratchet, the ingeniues Gazlowe is making business. That's about it.

Stitches was made by Abercrombie, an old man who tricks you into gathering parts to build the abomination in the dark and eerie town of Darkshire.

Li-Li is Chen's niece. She's seen in Pandaria.

Samuro is an interpetation of the Blademaster unit from Warcraft 3.

Brightwing is a fae dragon. A creature that eats arcane and poops life. They're like, friends of the druids.

Lunara is a dryad, also friends of the druids.

E.T.C - Elite Tauren Chieftain is a reference to a band that created songs related to world of warcraft.

Murky is a murloc. Just a fish creature very iconic to the wow game.

Cho'gall is an ogre mage, a rare and powerful creature, who was corrupted by the Old Gods.

p.s: if you find mistakes please correct me.

Further further learning : The Story of Warcraft, a full list of most warcraft lore in existance by Nobbel

P.s.s as you can see in the comments below, the moment you try and tell more than the bare minimum about a character... it becomes an 800 word essay. I tried my best.

HOTS is the one MOBA I actually enjoy playing

Posted: 02 May 2017 07:49 PM PDT

So I love overwatch, and I installed HOTS just do the 5 matches each week and get the skins in overwatch. But after playing this game for a little bit, I have got to say that I really enjoy playing it.

I should also mention that I have heaps of friends that play LOL and DOTA, and although I have tried to get into it with them, I never really seemed to enjoy it, mainly cos its a really complicated game and its just sorta overwhelming, BUT... HOTS basically took that same MOBA gameplay and made it much easier to understand but still keeping that "difficult to master" type thing, and I gotta say that I see myself casually playing some HOTS even after the nexus challenge, so thanks I guess...

Just wanted to share my thoughts.
