Hearthstone - Lifecoach parts way with G2esports

Lifecoach parts way with G2esports

Ever since Gadgetzan, this game has treated its players like shit.

Posted: 14 May 2017 07:29 PM PDT

I was playing a ton of Hunter today on ladder and I noticed something pretty fucked up. Why is it that almost every time I play Alleycat, the Alleycat gets killed first? When I played another hunter, why did they always trade in their Alleycat before Tabbycat? Or let Tabbycat be the only one to feel the glorious power of Crackling Razormaw? It seemed really strange to me that everyone would be so negligent of Alleycat, so I started digging for answers. I went on the subreddit, I watched streamers, I even started adding people I played, and everyone told me the same thing: Tabbycat is Cute Cat, and Alleycat is Ugly Cat.

"Cute Cat." What. The. Fuck.

Seriously, what the fuck? First, that name doesn't even make sense. I'm more of a snake guy than a cat guy, but I still know a cute cat when I see one, and they're both cute. Seriously, I can acknowledge that Tabbycat is cute. Those beautiful green eyes say, "hey, wanna hang out?" He has an adorable stance too, very triumphant. He looks a little too big for his britches, and it is cute! I get that!

But Alleycat is JUST AS CUTE, PEOPLE. His eyes betray a little timidness. Maybe he's nervous because he likes you so much, but is he not still walking towards you? Coming to play, even though there's some sewer gunk in front of him? He's looking right up at you and he looks more humble, more appreciative. Also, his tooth jewelry is a little more tasteful IMO. The only problem I see is a little underbite, but maybe he's just chewing something! A cat has to eat!

I honestly hate to bring this up, but look at the background of Alleycat's art, too. Tabbycat is there, and he looks like a total asshole! Look, he's probably just waking up from a nap or something so I don't want to make any huge assumptions, but come on. Are you really going to tell me with that face that Tabbycat has a "cute cat" personality?

I know this seems dumb, but as someone who suffers from acne, who is a little overweight, and who doesn't have the most symmetrical face, I feel the sting of "Ugly Cat." Yeah, I'm Ugly Cat, and it feels like I get killed first too, even though I have the exact same value as the Cute Cat. And everytime Ugly Cat gets shafted in the game, I have to just take it like its my fault. Well, it's not my fault.

IT'S NOT MY FUCKING FAULT I'M AN UGLY PIECE OF SHIT. IF A GIRL WOULD GIVE ME A FUCKING CHANCE I THINK PEOPLE WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT BUT THEY DON'T BECAUSE THEY'RE TOO BUSY WITH CUTE CAT CHADS.

Fuck you for printing this card Blizzard, it makes your playerbase feel specifically targeted. After I go buy 10 packs I'm totally never giving you money again except for preorders or if I'm missing a legendary.

Top Cards of the Week from /r/CustomHearthstone (05/15/2017)

Posted: 15 May 2017 07:32 AM PDT

Album

Sorry about the delay on this week's post as I know many of you really look forward to the cards that /r/customhearthstone makes each week. Besides my general forgetfulness, this was delayed because I wanted to also share this with you all. If you haven't already heard, we are hosting a large, team-based, design tournament and are entering the semifinals. A lot of teams have already been eliminated and the rest have just submitted their entries for the 3rd round. They are some really awesome cards created in horizontal cycles and you can join in on the tournament by voting for your favourites.

Thanks for checking that out and I'll see you all next week. Last week's post.

How many Hearthstone devs does it take to change a lightbulb?

It doesn't matter, because they don't know how to balance the ladder.

Arena Rewards - how big is Blizzard's rake?

Posted: 15 May 2017 05:31 AM PDT

For a tl;dr, look at the Conclusions section

EDIT: Read the comments about the discussion about whether my assumptions about card reward rarities is correct; there might be some deviations for the equivalents especially towards the higher ranks; more investigation into the exact reward distribution is needed.

Below, I convert the table from here into a table that shows the expected dust/gold return for each reward level. The conversion formula that I am using is 100 gold = 107 dust. The reward multiplier is the ratio between the expected reward (in gold) and the entry fee (in gold). The reward multiplier without the guaranteed pack calculates your expected gold - 100 (from the guaranteed pack) over the 50 gold that you pay as a premium for playing arena

As far as getting cards of specific rarities goes, I will presume that each card has a 5% chance of being golden and 95% chance of being regular; each random reward is presumed to have the same odds of happening. This is clearly not going to be exactly representative, but since we don't know the distribution of card rarities as rewards, and the distribution of random rewards, it should be sufficient. It should be noted that you only get golden cards starting at 7 wins, which is representative of less than 10% of the runs, so our estimation of the total rake for Blizzard in the end should be in the right ballpark.

GoB is abbreviated for Golden or Better.

Wins Guaranteed Rewards Optional Rewards Expected Outcome Reward Multiplier with pack Reward Multiplier without pack
0 1 pack 1 of 25-40 dust; 25-40 gold; 1 Common Card 123 Dust OR 115 Gold 76.7% 30%
1 1 pack 1 of 25-50 dust; 30-50 gold; 1 Common Card; 1 pack 148 Dust OR 138 Gold 92.2% 76%
2 1 pack 1 of 40-50 dust; 35-60 gold; 1 Common Card; 1 Rare Card; 1 pack 152 Dust OR 142 Gold 95% 84%
3 1 pack; 25-35 gold 1 of 20-25 dust; 20-25 gold; 1 Common Card; 1 Rare Card; 1 pack 175 Dust OR 163 Gold 108.6% 126%
4 1 pack; 40-60 gold 1 of 20-25 dust; 20-30 gold; 1 Common Card; 1 Rare Card; 1 pack 198 Dust OR 185 Gold 123% 170%
5 1 pack; 45-60 gold 1 of 45-60 dust; 45-60 gold; 1 Common Card; 1 Rare Card; 1 pack 260 Dust OR 243 Gold 162% 286%
6 1 pack; 75-85 gold 1 of 45-60 dust; 45-60 gold; 1 Common Card; 1 Rare Card; 1 pack 289 Dust OR 270 Gold 180% 340%
7 1 pack; 150-160 gold 1 of 20-25 dust; 20-30 gold; 1 Common Card; 1 Rare Card; 1 pack 310 Dust OR 290 Gold 193% 380%
8 1 pack; 150-160 gold 2 of 20-25 dust; 20-45 gold; 1 GoB Common Card; 1 GoB Rare Card; 1 GoB Epic Card; 1 GoB Legendary; 1 pack 493 Dust OR 461 Gold 307% 721%
9 1 pack; 150-165 gold 2 of 20-50 dust; 20-120 gold; 1 Golden Common Card; 1 GoB Rare Card; 1 GoB Epic Card; 1 GoB Legendary; 1 pack 523 Dust OR 488 Gold 326% 777%
10 1 pack; 150-185 gold 2 of 65-95 dust; 65-125 gold; 1 Golden Common Card; 1 GoB Rare Card; 1 GoB Epic Card; 1 GoB Legendary; 1 pack 554 Dust OR 518 Gold 345% 835%
11 1 pack; 195-210 gold 2 of 65-95 dust; 65-205 gold; 1 Golden Common Card; 1 GoB Rare Card; 1 GoB Epic Card; 1 GoB Legendary; 1 pack 592Dust OR 552 Gold 368% 905%
12 1 pack; 215-225 gold; 25-35 gold 2 of 65-185 gold; 1 Golden Common Card; 1 Golden Rare Card; 1 GoB Epic Card; 1 GoB Legendary; 1 pack 738 Dust OR 689 Gold 460% 1178%

Based on those results, and the expected probability of each number of wins, we can compute the average profit Blizzard makes from each arena run:

Number of Wins Expected Gold Outcome Blizzard Profit Proportion of Runs
0 115 35 12.5%
1 138 12 18.75%
2 142 8 18.75%
3 163 -13 15.63%
4 185 -35 11.72%
5 243 -93 8.20%
6 270 -120 5.47%
7 290 -140 3.52%
8 461 -311 2.20%
9 488 -338 1.34%
10 518 -368 0.81%
11 552 -402 0.48%
12 689 -539 0.65%
Expected Blizzard profit: -37

BUT SHAKESPEARE, WE DON'T GET 10 GOLD FOR 3 WINS IN ARENA

The adjustment is easy; below is the table with the expected Blizzard return if you subtract 10/3 gold for every Arena win you get:

Number of Wins Expected Gold Outcome Blizzard Profit Proportion of Runs
0 115 35 12.5%
1 135 15 18.75%
2 136 14 18.75%
3 153 -3 15.63%
4 172 -22 11.72%
5 227 -77 8.20%
6 250 -100 5.47%
7 267 -117 3.52%
8 435 -285 2.20%
9 458 -308 1.34%
10 485 -335 0.81%
11 516 -366 0.48%
12 649 -499 0.65%
Expected Blizzard profit: -27

CONCLUSIONS

There is a gigantic jump in expected value at 8 wins thanks to the introduction of 2 rewards, one of which could be a legendary. Overall, Blizzard is actively losing value from allowing people to play Arena - if everybody was playing Arena by paying with in-game gold, Blizzard would be losing about 27-37 Gold per Arena on average. Other better known conclusions are confirmed, like breaking even at 3 wins; interestingly, if you discount the guaranteed pack, you double your investment of 50 gold at 5 and not 7 wins.

I lost Arena to the best strategy I have seen in my life

Posted: 14 May 2017 06:48 PM PDT

This guy literally roped every single turn and I started getting frustrated at turn 7 I left to take a pee after I ended my turn. So turn 8 happens he played Nozdormu I come back I missed 2 turns and ended up losing the match.

Also sidenote but in that arena run I faced 3 different people who had Nozdormu I find that weird.

Blizzard, can we have a Tavern Brawl where you make a deck using all cards from all classes?

Posted: 14 May 2017 06:39 PM PDT

^

EDIT: People are telling me this brawl would be broken, but already I've seen 5+ different deck ideas

EDIT: /u/cronedog suggests that all cards from other classes should cost +1, which I think is great!

[Mid/Low Ranks only] Do you sometimes NOT play around a card because your opponent looks too poor to afford it ?

I've documented it every time and kept an album on my phone for this, and I just wanted to spread my joy and cheer!

For beginners, patches is Good.

Posted: 15 May 2017 02:18 AM PDT

I was watching a stream yesterday when someone said he was sad because he got a bad legendary which is Patches The pirate ...
Someone told him to just dust it and I was like "WTF". After some discussion it turns out a lot of beginners consider "small" legendaries as bad.
So for them Thalnos is not very good and Patches is horrible as it only has 1/1 charge, so I just wanted to give this advice.
Thalnos is pretty good, and Patches is very good guys so don't disenchant it.
In most card games and specially in hearthstone tutoring a card is one of the most powerful effects, Patches can be tutored early and it's an early drop so it lets you play your curve pretty well and puts some early pressure. Imagine you are turn 10 and have an empty hand then draw a 1 drop, most of the time you will be pretty sad. Well with patches it won't happen because you will probably have already drawn him. Thalnos is also good for almost the same reason, it's a low cost legendary that recycles itself.
TL DR : Beginners please consider keeping patches and thalnos if you find them

So what happens if you play Deathwing, and you have Deathwing, Dragonlord on board?

Posted: 15 May 2017 07:57 AM PDT

Discard all the dragons in hands, or summon them because Dragonlord is dead?

I always wondered about it, but too poor to try it.

Do you concede of your opponent if too slow?

Posted: 15 May 2017 01:37 AM PDT

Not even trying to be a dick towards you by running down the rope. He's generally thinking a bit too hard towards his moves and is taking forever. Much so, you manage to think/call his own moves and figure out if you've won or lost this game.

I honestly, hate slow opponents. It's just "Fuck it, take the win. You're too slow." It's a generally fast card game, least to me it is.

I created an app to make hearthstone lethal puzzles more accessible and fun!

Posted: 14 May 2017 03:01 PM PDT

Hello /r/hearthstone/ :)

I am James and I created a new app called Lethal. The app is inspired by the likes of Daily Chess Problems, where you are given a daily chessboard and have to complete the puzzle (typically win the game).

All the basics have been set up and the app is launched! Recently updated with article support. So as well as getting your daily fix of lethal puzzles, you can read legend Deck Guides from the Lethal community!

At the moment, there's over 50 lethal puzzles and more added daily! There's also a global leaderboard so you can track your progress among the community! Timed Card Trivia and Heroic puzzles too for those who like to challenge themselves!

Would love for you to check it out and give me any feedback regarding puzzle gameplay and general app suggestions.

(Android only at the moment, working on an iPhone version right now -stay tuned!)

tl;dr Lethal, an app that gives you daily hearthstone puzzles so you can practice spotting lethal on the go :)

edit: Thanks for highlighting that hovering over cards doesn't show card text on some devices, i'll try and get hands on mores devices and fix asap!

Screen Shot 2

My two major goals I set when I started playing hearthstone were to hit legend and get all heroes golden. This took a lot longer than hitting legend but it felt so much better.
