I just found about this and would like to share for those unaware, apparently CS:GO does not support LOD.

What is LOD? Level of Detail allows models in the game to switch to a lower-/higher poly version of a model depending on your distance to it. This (normally) is a standard feature of the Source engine, but alongside a lot of other things that used to work in Source / early CS:GO days it has been broken in the meanwhile with no fix in sight.

Note: CS:GO currently does not support LOD. As a result, $lod should be avoided in custom models for CS:GO.

Fine, but how does this cause low FPS?

Well, let me show you. With their "HD" remakes of older maps, Valve seems to love taking the route of making a lot of things as models as opposed to normal brushwork. This in itself already decreases FPS by a ton as models are way harder to render than brushes are.

Example: The new Inferno. I guess i am not the only one whose FPS absolutely plummet in 2nd mid. I've decompiled inferno and stripped away everything but models, here's a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/7xR5xBN.png

As you can see, yes that indeed is quite a lot of models, 6330 to be exact, most of them are just there for plain looks / because they are "prettier" than their worldbrush counterparts. On the new nuke theres even more. As a reference, the entirety of cache cointains just about 950 models. Even freaking cobblestone, a map even larger than Inferno (?) contains just about 1320 models.

Granted, not all of them are rendered at once thanks to basic optimizazion, fade distances and the like, but those that are rendered are likely always rendered with a unnecessary Level of detail, which in terms brings me back to the original reason i am writing this up.

TL;DR CS:GO is missing a pretty basic but important optimization feature that, correcly applied, can yield more FPS on the new "fancy" maps. Valve, please fix.

Edit: I've compiled a custom version of the new Inferno as a practical example. All i've done is deleting all of the models out of the map ignoring any visual bugs caused as a result, simply leaving in just world brushes to practially demonstrate how much of the detail in the map is resulting from models. Keep in mind that i had to strip away some optimization done which broke in the process of decompiling the map. Also the performance you'll see in that map is nothing near what you would get if said issue was fixed, its just to show off how much detail really is achieved from models.

Edit2: You can just use sv_cheats 1 and r_drawstaticprops 0 to hide all props on any map.

I've seen stuff like this work on here before and I would really love it if a pro player or someone related to the pro scene could help give an insight into their life and into e-sports. The interview could be done through e-mail, twitter, a skype call, or anything else. I understand this may be a long shot but I'm hoping that someone will have the time to help me out.
