| Anet, we have to talk about Season 1... again Posted: 04 May 2017 09:54 AM PDT In regards to what Mo said, to spread the word on Guild Wars 2 and recruiting new Players, let me say this: IN MY OPINION, Anet has get Season 1 remade and integrated ASAP, even before the new expansion. Reasons: Missing link is annoying. As a new player, you get to play the original Season Zero, defeating the mediocre implemented should-also-be-reworked Dragon Zaithan Endoss, then what? If you have the base game only: You are done. If you have HoT, suddenly you get a ticket to the jungle with other than a few cutscenes and an NPC you can talk to, that nearly is not enough, with a group you dont give a damn about. If you dont want to start there, you want to have the missing link, you are standing before a paywall with 200 gems for one Season times eight or in other words 20 euro (in my country) for a in-between story with the also completly unknown group mentioned earlier you dont give a damn about because again, a cutscene and a little dialoge is not nearly enough to build some kind of relationship with them. And why the heck are they calling me boss? This is not a joke, this is what happened with not 2, not 3, but 4 new players in my guild i had to explain that the content in between is not coming back, so please try to let the stranger npcs in your heart instantly. Look, Rox looks neat, isnt she? Yes, its a she, from where? You dont know? You have to complete your storyline to stop confusing new players and stop making them lose interest because they are getting the feeling to have missed out. Then you have to integrate those seasons - hopefully with a instanced season 1 to have finaly the whole picture as a new player who wants to like the story and the characters in it - into your expansion pack, or at least, make the whole season 200 to 400 gems. New players with - now more empty than ever - original maps and with no reward for strangers helping them in their personal storyline, have - thanks to bad gold to gem ratio, player control of the markets, infaltions, no more farmspots and not that much Gold from Dungeons starting with level 30 problems getting enough Gold as it is. Now explain them why they should invest their hard earned Gold or real Money in a Season 2, they can not even connect with because they buy the second book/movie/content of a series. Many dont even reach that. Not everyone enjoys the story that much or at least maybe a few chapters. Sure i am going to help my Guildmate in his personal stroy, but what is with me? Maybe he/she/it wants to play through a whole lot of chapters, going for hours. Why do i get nothing out of it? No item, no achivement, not even a little exp - nothing. As long as this is not dealt with, i cannot recommend this game fully. It is a major problem Arenanet ignores. Is the story good, they ask. What do you say to them? Yes, on the Parts that are there it is. [link] [comments] | ||
| A big thank you to A-Net for not putting the collection rocks into the Jumping Puzzle area Posted: 04 May 2017 04:40 AM PDT It was one of the things that buffled me in Ember Bay. You had to do the JP and make sure you look around for the tokens. In fact 2 of the tokens were way of the edge of the volcano after the last checkpoint. This time JP feels more isolated and comfortable to finish without worrying about other achievements. Edit: you don't need to do the JP for map completion either. There are some hard to get POIs on the map but none of them are on the JP [link] [comments] | ||
| PSA: you can salvage legendary armor pieces Posted: 04 May 2017 09:54 AM PDT Any kit is viable, yields Ball of Dark Energy, (lesser) Vision Crystal and apparently has a chance (or guaranteed) drop of the Salvaged Greatness just don't try it. | Whoever at Anet was in charge of making boiling water and waves in the new map did a good job! Posted: 04 May 2017 04:36 AM PDT I just wanted to say that I was impressed by the water mass in the new map. I like the waves, something you don't get to see in other maps. It was the first thing I noticed when I arrived to a new map. Kudos to anet devs! [link] [comments] | ||
| Thank you for Crimson SAB Torch update!! Posted: 04 May 2017 05:43 PM PDT Looks like the last patch added a red aura to the Crimson Assassin SAB torch. Before patch it looked the same as a regular torch. After the patch it looks much better. Here's green and blue SAB torches for comparison. I know this was a tiny fix, but it made me really happy! | To whoever had the idea of changing backpiece aquisition on this LS3 map.. Posted: 04 May 2017 12:49 PM PDT ..THANK YOU! The new backpiece, even if it's only an exotic equip so far, is 100 times better to get compared to the other ones introduced with LS3. No crafting required, no limitations except that we have to get a set number of runestones [so, a set number of days in the map since we can get only one each day], no farm needed, and there is lore behind! Seriously, good job and thank you! [link] [comments] | ||
| PSA: Don't bother with the Sentient Singularity Posted: 04 May 2017 06:07 AM PDT The new currency eater eats 150 Unbound Magic at a time and you can use a couple of times a day, just like any other currency eater. It poops out the same exact item as the other Sentient eaters do. Today I was able to use it 6 times, so I spent 900 Unbound Magic and got loot that was worth about 14.5 silver. That's just over 16 silver/1000 Unbound Magic spent in this way. Abysmal. It is much more profitable/useful to ignore this eater and buy Magic-Warped Packets or things of the like as shown here. You can easily see that the profit for these packets/bundles come out to be over 2.5 gold/1000 Unbound Magic. ANet, what is the point of this? [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 04 May 2017 03:59 AM PDT TL;DR: Traditional book stories are best delivered by books, and modern video games can offer us a different adventurous experience instead, which GW2 does. Also, the title and the bolded text. There's been a lot of criticism about the multitude of plotlines, the lack of exposition and the poor pacing of the GW2 story and why it is bad, but I have a different opinion. Hear me out. I think the story as presented now is better than the traditional type of story people usually ask for in discussion threads. Obviously, we all have different backgrounds, and different experience comes from that. Maybe it's because I've read a decent amount of sci-fi literature, or watched a really large amount of those-things-people-do-not-generally-like-in-western-communities, but (point A) I feel that I am at the state where I see that "everything has been written before" and "nothing new can be done" - so the value comes more from the actual arrangement and seasoning rather than the plot itself. Maybe it's because (point B) I've been studying contemporary art over the last couple of years, and I am used to the concept of a postmodern intertextual piece which needs not fully form itself to work because it already exists within a rhizomatic field of similar pieces that automatically fill the gaps in the viewer's mind. (This, to note, doesn't inheritably makes me "better" - just one with more time to focus on these fictional rather than other RL things.) Someone said that the story lacks a specific direction and goal, with an example of "Personal Story past level 30 always being about slaying Zhaitan". Surprisingly, for me this was exactly the point which made me postpone finishing the story for 1+ years, and never finish it on another of my (now 20+) characters. I mean, if we're rallying an army to slay an Undead Dragon, what can exactly happen in the end - we build a pink coffee shop or herd space cats instead? So when I first heard about fighting the Jungle Dragon in the expansion, the first thing I feared was "great, it will be all the jungle stuff over and over again, and then we kill it - and when we get to Jormag, it will be snow and snow, and I hate snow maps, and..."; but shortly after slaying the big bad vine, we got a story-based reason to visit a variety of places like Bloodstone Fen, Ember Bay, Bitterfrost Frontier and even Lake Doric! So much variety and so many different adventures! One might now argue that a variety of subquests doesn't require the lack of a clear goal. But I beg to differ: it was precisely because we lacked a clear goal, we could actually go on standalone adventures and not filler side-quests that drag out the story. It was more of a realistic slice-of-life fantasy experience where not everything happens how we want it and because we do it, rather than a plot-driven action movie where you already know the end from the title and the poster alone. Today we might have wanted to go find Braham and slap him in the face - but some evil faction attacks a capital city and we have to help out; or tomorrow we were going to talk with the genius who can help us solve all the problems in one large swoop, only to get interrupted by a rampaging god! "Things are inconsistent and incoherent!" - people complain, wishing for a carefully planned book story where no details are left out; instead, we get a realistic, life-like pile of events where we just get thrown into the fray and have to make difficult decisions on the spot, which is precisely how real life works! Things do happen without us and not only to us, and we are but a small part of the whole world and the whole story. And I find the recent case of Balthazazurus really interesting in terms of the feedback it got, which was basically: a) "I did not notice he said anything about being weakened, and even if he did, it was not enough story," and b) "I did hear what he said so it was fine"; for me, surprisingly, that part that some people missed (him screaming things along "Curse you, other gods who took my power!") actually felt excessive and shoehorned! My fundamental position towards all fiction is this: "If it's like this, there's a reason." Spoonfeeding every reason and detail makes storytelling worse - you can show only that much in any given media, and every extra step makes it look more and more like a staged theatrical play with an infodump bucket on top, so often you shouldn't be told the reason for something whatsoever! A thing just happened because things happen, and us players-and-characters speculating about the possible reasons is more fun than hearing the reason. Seeing how we succeed in demasking a supreme being and understanding that we didn't go blind, and that he had to lie, and to actually hire people, and to sneak in to take the machine instead of killing everyone immediately - automatically triggers the "omg he couldn't do it so I wonder how he lost his power, is it actually the real you bro" direction of thinking, and the next line of "Oh, I'm a poor deity stripped of my former glory!" becomes just superfluous and cringey. The fact that he had to do all of the above was the exposition itself that people ask for - the "show, not tell" part specifically. The immediate incoming critique of "If there's no reason, it's just shoddy writing!" is valid often, but not always. It is not valid in case of products with high enough overall quality and depth to pull of that lack of reasoning. The original Neon Genesis Evangelion did it and thus succeeded; GW2, obviously, does it as well. "Obviously" - because where NGE had only perfected style and rhythm and industry-grade symbolic references, GW2 has a whole library of actual lore from which we could pull out all the possible reasons for, say, the current depowering of a god. It may even (and most likely will) do with the current lore - such as the story of Rytlock in the Mists (which would also explain his story not being told to us after all this time). And thus, specifically this lack of definite reasoning made it possible to make the LS story so unpredictable and exciting: after each part we could dive into speculation about every possible reason for every possible event and action, instead of just... closing the book, saying "yeah, that makes sense" and moving on. I agree that getting the right balance of both reasons and no-reasons is hard, and that this balance is vastly different for every player experiencing the story being told; I also believe that it differs greatly with age and experience, so older seasoned scriptwriters who're deep in the in-game world and know both its past and its future can miss the younger and/or less focused audience wishing for a more easy-going "A goes to B and C to get D in the end" type of story where they can just feel like a badass hero in shiny armour (that's what video games are for, after all), as well as adults who use video games to relax after work in short sessions and have neither time nor will to process deranged plotlines. But for me, the recent episode has been the most impressive one so far: not because we had a God enter our world, or because there was a frigging Elder Dragon swimming in lava, - but because our character had no choice than to throw himself towards certain death not even knowing if he will be able to save the world... just to find himself basically back at square one, except completely exhausted, having lost hope and now with even less tools to fix everything he's done already. "The journey itself is the destination" - and this, for me, is miles ahead from casually slaying a crazed evil organisation leader or an overgrown planty pokemon. [link] [comments] | ||

In December I posted here asking for help with my dissertation research and you sure delivered! Guild Wars 2 had the best representation in my study with 387 completed responses. Over all of reddit I got 785 complete responses in a little over two days. My advisors were blown away. I've posted the link to the results blog below, I'm happy to chat more about the project here if you all have any questions

| [Spoiler] [tinfoil hat time] On the Countess and the Queen Posted: 04 May 2017 04:32 PM PDT Short Version: Either Queen Jennah, Countess Anise, or both may be Lyssa. Please see this great post about the gods before commenting: https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/694mns/spoilerlongon_gods_an_analysis_of_the_history_and/ TL;DR -- the gods are severely weakened from their magic being drained by Elder Dragons; they didn't make you go blind instantly in the first place (Malchor carved FIVE STATUES of them, taking months, maybe even years, of staring directly at them to do so, before getting to Dwayna and finally going blind. It's a very slow process. We'd have to stare directly at Balthazar for months on end before going blind); the magic of gods can be passed on to other people. Jennah, Anise, or both being Lyssa neatly explains several plot points that haven't been explained yet. I will get to them soon. First... which one is it? I'd like to put in my vote for Anise being either Ilya or Lyss, or even both of them switching out from time to time. They have invested some of their power into Jennah as their avatar/representative. The gods having imbued avatars is well-established; see Grenth's Reapers. This explains why Jennah can be the heir to the throne AND still have immense power. I imagine that occasionally, Ilya/Lyss takes on Jennah's form using illusions, such as in situations when she needs protection, but Jennah is invested with enough power to be dangerous in her own right. Lyssa can also appear as one being, so they may be doing just that. Another possibility is that one or the other of the twins was killed, or nearly killed, and she invested her power into Jennah, who is now a new half of the goddess (same as what happened to Kormir, Grenth, etc) Now, the mysteries solved by Anise (or Jennah herself, or both of them) being Ilya/Lyss. Mystery #1: Why is Jennah so ridiculously powerful? If she either IS a goddess, OR has been invested with a goddess' power, this would explain A LOT. Even a weakened god can throw around a lot of weight, if only by just having been around long enough to have a better understanding of magic than us mere mortals. Mystery #2: Why is Anise immortal? If she's a goddess, well, gods are immortal. Simple. Mystery #3: Why did Jennah call back Logan from Destiny's Edge at such a crucial moment, when she clearly had the situation handled? There are MANY reasons. If either Anise, Jennah, or both are Lyssa, then they undoubtedly KNOW that killing Elder Dragons will destabilize Tyria. They may have called Logan back deliberately to stop DE from killing Kralkatorrick. There might also have been a more selfish reason -- Kralk's magic has always seemed somewhat related to mesmers, mostly via what we've seen of Glint -- illusions, light, crystals, mirrors. Just like Balthazar seemed to prioritize grabbing Primordius' magic, so Lyssa may have wished to spare Kralk for a time when she could reliably be in a position to steal his magic for herself. She may also be truly in love with Logan and have wanted (again, selfishly) to keep him absolutely safe from the dragon, unwilling to risk losing something that was "hers." (If Anise is Lyssa but not Jennah, then Anise advised Jennah to call Logan back.) "Okay, but why allow us to go after Zhaitan and Moredremoth?" Remember, until the Council, Jennah OPPOSED us going after Moredremoth! As for Zhaitan, she never officially really gave us the go-ahead, and honestly there was nothing she could really do to stop us. Besides, if her reasons for sparing Kralky are selfish, then those other dragons' powers belong to other people, what does she care? Mystery #4: How was Balthazar even in the right place at the right time to take on the Bloodstone explosion's power? Simple -- Balthazar has been secretly working in the Shining Blade under Anise (Lyssa) since... well, forever. If he was a secret Shining Blade member, it's easy to imagine Anise/Lyssa putting a person who would be one of her strongest agents in as a spy in with the White Mantle. He was in deep cover with the White Mantle at the Bloodstone Fen location; he easily realized that the Stone was going to go nuclear (the gods know a lot about bloodstones, after all...) and that not all of Lazarus' aspects were there, so he simply stepped in to take control. Now flush with power, he perhaps decided to make his move -- maybe he didn't like working under Lyssa and being so weak, so he decides to go off on his own to try to absorb Primordus' power. Mystery #5: Why did Balthazar have that mirror? If my theory on #4 is true, then that's simple -- it was given to him by Anise to hide his true nature. He re-calibrated it after absorbing the Bloodstone's power. And, some problems with this theory that I'd like to address. Problem #1: How can Jennah be Lyssa if we know about her birth and lineage? I already addressed this in the beginning, and there's a few possibilities. One is that Anise is Lyssa and invested Jennah with a portion of her power, much the way that Grenth has Reapers. Another is that Anise is either Ilya or Lyss, and the other twin started to "die," so, to preserve herself, the first twin invested her power into Jennah. We already know that the power of the gods can be passed on when they die; if Jennah didn't take enough to make her truly ascendant, it might have been enough to stave off the worst effects of whatever the Elder Dragons are doing to the gods. Problem #2: Why would the gods hide from mortals like this? Why would they bother? As @Jonah_Marriner notes in his post, the gods don't actually get anything from belief besides loyalty; they don't get any supernatural powering up from people believing in them (unlike in other mythologies/settings). Drawing attention to themselves like HEY IM A BEING LITERALLY MADE OF MAGIC GUYS would be a surefire way to draw the attention of Elder Dragons and get eaten. Furthermore, there are many more unscrupulous people who KNOW that the gods power can be stolen -- if they see weak gods, what's to stop someone from getting up to some god-murder? Finally, the other races don't owe the human gods shit. If anything, the Charr seeing the human gods back would put a pretty big push behind the Seperatists/Renegades (because fuck gods man!). Finally, Lyssa is a special case -- she has historically spent A LOT of time in disguise among humans. Dovetailing off this: Where are the other gods? Melandru I've heard some speculation that the Pale Tree may be Melandru, but I think that's highly unlikely for a number of reasons. One of which his that iirc the Pale Tree was planted relatievly soon after Eye of the North, which would have been before the gods left Tyria entirely. Melandru may be completely dead, alas -- the Quaggan believe that Megallan (very likely an aspect of Melandru) was killed by either the Krait (unlikely) or the Water Dragon (very likely). We also know for a fact that it's possible to break Elder Dragon influence over minions -- this was done in Arah Path III. I think the Ventari Tablet is more than "just" a tablet of philosophy -- I think Ventari enacted a powerful ritual to break Moredremoth's influence, and the Tablet is an artifact that's part of this (it glows). So, yes, I think the Pale Tree is "just" a former Dragon Minion, just like Glint and Aurene. It's possible, however, that the Pale Tree may be able to absorb enough of Moredremoth's power to basically become a new Elder Dragon or a god herself, so who even knows. Grenth We have some evidence that Grenth is SOMEWHERE -- during the Personal Story Mission, one of his Reapers speaks to us personally. The Reaper is severely weakened (following this pattern of the gods being weakened by the dragons) but still able to talk to us. He gives no indication that Grenth is gone. Dwayna If there's another canidate for a god who is dead besides Melandru, I'm going with Dwayna. She's a mediating influence and the closest thing to a truly "good" god we have. If something terrible happened to her, it would explain a great deal about Balthazar's desperation and despair. Kormir I honestly hope she's not only been around this whole time, but that she's going to swoop in and steal the spotlight again, just to piss off the haters. I love Kormir. I think she's awsome. I never thought she was useless. Abaddon he's super dead, guys Dhuum Might still be wayyy out there in the mists, waiting until Anet finishes his animations so he can once again heft his mighty ban scythe. Menzies Do we really know jack shit about this guy other than that he hates Balthazar? WHO KNOWS That Mysterious Dead Spider Goddess Who Preceded Abaddon she's super dead guys IN CONCLUSION: there's some pretty strong evidence that Jennah, Anise, or both are Lyssa. | [Spoiler] Lazarus feels like a lost opportunity. Posted: 04 May 2017 10:08 AM PDT So, true nature and implications of the reveal aside, I felt deeply disappointed from the moment that we were told that Lazarus wasn't really Lazarus. Some of this is just personal opinion -- the Mursaat were one of my favorite things about Guild Wars I. Initially benevolent, secretly sinister, always mysterious, elegant and dangerous, the Mursaat were almost seductive with their power... and that worked so very well for what they were! Like, no WONDER the White Mantle fell in with them. Lazarus being back opened up a whole host of possibilities for finding out more about the Mursaat -- who they really were beyond the Unseen Ones behind the Mantle, if there were any left, and mysteries of the first Dragon incursion. We had some tantalizing glimpses thanks to the Mursaat Fortress in the Fire Island Chain, and some more mysteries introduced by the Bastion of the Penitent. And then there was Lazarus himself -- I, for one, was REALLY interested to see if whatever ]Glayvin and Naveed had done to him](https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/The_Justiciar%27s_End) had genuinely changed him. What if he'd absorbed Naveed's memories, indeed, Naveed's soul, and thus gained a human perspective on things? But now that's all thrown away because Lazarus was a fake-out and not real all along. And to bring him back after that would be really stupid and cheesy. Granted, plot points being incredibly dumb has never stopped ArenaNet before, but still... it feels like a massive lost opportunity to explore more of the Mursaat. Granted -- Yes, I'm excited about exploring more about the human gods. But I still feel like this could have been done without using Lazarus as a red herring. Why throw away one of the franchise's most intriguing villains that way? Bleh. [link] [comments] | ||

| The Guild Wars 2 Quick Guide to Guides/Common Questions Posted: 04 May 2017 06:55 AM PDT (Note: This is an ongoing work in progress post that is being updated for formatting, information, tips and guides, the idea behind this is to be a quick community guide to getting information for new players, and to help with common issue posts that will branch into more in depth guides/support by means of links and answers) Hello! Everyone please feel free throw in information and guides, tips etc as I would like to eventually get this onto the Stickies for the mods as an updated New Player Guide currently we have https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/wiki/newplayers for new players which is a nice starting point but may be overwhelming for a new player. Thanks! Q: What is Guild Wars 2? Gw2 is a MMO with no real hard completion, endgame (level 80+) is sort of a goal to most players, these will be your pve raids, high level fractals, Dungeons, Map completion, WvW, crafting, gold farming, Skin Collections (Wardrobe), Achievements, Scribing and other activities. Every thing you do in game will give you xp take it slow have fun, DO NOT USE YOUR LEVEL 80 boost on your 1st character (if you bought HoT vs being F2P) Q: What class should I play? (https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/4sduhr/which_class_should_i_play_2016/) Your low level class is more of an intro to your level 80 full skilled class (you will eventually by level 80 unlock all non elite traits and skills), for Open World play every class is viable some are just harder to learn or play than others and vary in skill ceiling, "basic beginner" classes are fairly standard and easy to learn even in gw2's active combat (you need to learn to dodge, block and manage you movement and skills as this is not a tab target game see Dodging 101 ) (Quick Option If you have bought HoT)
Q:Is Guild Wars 2 hard to learn/play? Open vanilla PvE (Core Gw2) is playable with any class, WvW and PvP are very much skill dependent, Dungeons are easy/beginner endgame pve content once you hit level 80 (Dungeons are playable before level 80 but not advised), low fractals are a good intro to the higher tier fractals which will be harder as intend, Raids are the "endgame hard" pve content Q: Tips on making money and gearing as beginers? If the gear is better than what you are currently using equip it (See Armor.. if not salvage it and sell it to either the trading post or vendor pending on which will give you more money, you can also farm nodes (trees, plants, ore) for more income Q: How do I generate enough money to buy items? Most people find the various farming areas (leather, bags, trees) fractals, world bosses, dungeons, pvp/wvw reward tracks or just buy gems and convert them to gold (you can get gems by using gold earned in game and gems are purely for QOL or cosmetic items from the Gem Store) Q What Server should I pick? See (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/World) for an explanation on the Gw2 Megaserver, WvW, and PvE servers and how they work, Your Home Server is only dependent for the WvW gamemode, North America / Europe servers are separated by Region, so if you pick NA/EU you only be with other NA/EU players Q: Is the Game Free to Play? Yes, all of the Core (Pre HoT expansion) Guild Wars 2 is free to play Q: What options does a Free to Play account vs paid account have? To view account types see: (https://help.guildwars2.com/hc/en-us/articles/230165307-Account-types-Free-Core-HoT) What Can I do in Guild Wars 2?
