The Kiev Major Learning Stream

Intro

Hello and welcome to the /r/LearnDota2 Kiev Major Learning Hub. This stream is similar to TI5's newcomer stream organized by the /r/LearnDota2 community for new (and experienced) players to learn about and discuss the game during the Main Event. What our learning stream has that the TI5 stream was missing is live audience interaction with the panelists and dedicated chat channels in our LearnDota2 Discord

The Stream

Our broadcast is run by experienced DOTA coach and active streamer /u/Reach4sKai. He will be hosting the stream and moderating discussion with our panelists for every game of all 4 days of the main event! The stream will go live ~9a.m. Kiev time for pre-game discussion. Our panelists are volunteers from the /r/LearnDota2 community and come from all skill brackets, ranging from 1k-5k. You can find the stream on Skai's twitch channel, https://www.twitch.tv/skaihighgaming

Audience Participation

Skai has a bot which will monitor his twitch chat. When you type the question code (ex. !question) the bot will log that message to a notepad that Skai will be able to pull your questions from for discussion. You can also send him a question by tweeting @reach4skai. Panelists will also be monitoring twitch chat and the Discord for good questions to bring up for discussion. The /r/LearnDota2 Discord will be used if you want to join a room dedicated to discussion about a certain role (carry, mid, support, etc.).

VODs archived to YouTube

The VODs of each match will be uploaded to Skai's YouTube channel. Don't forget to subscribe!

Giveaways

We will be giving away bundles throughout the event! Listen up for the raffle code and enter via twitch chat.

Rules

Our #1 rule from the /r/LearnDota2 community will transfer over to all discussion platforms during the event (Twitch Chat, Discord, and of course, /r/LearnDota2). That rule is

Be friendly. Civil discussion is encouraged. Toxic attitudes or flaming aren't welcome here. Try to remain respectful.

If you break this rule, disciplinary action will be taken against you in the form of a kick/mute/ban.

Our community is known for creating a friendly environment for all players to ask their questions and improve at the game we all enjoy playing so much.

I hope you all participate in discussion and enjoy the stream! Don't forget to subcribe to /r/LearnDota2, follow Skai on Twitch, Twitter and his Discord, and join us on our own Discord.

Just a quick reminder for players of all tiers

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 04:31 AM PDT

I always hear that being toxic makes you lose games. I always assume it's true, but I've had plenty of games with toxic people on my team that I've won and plenty I've played against that won. Yesterday was magical though. Warlock was my daily hero and he's not the most difficult out there so I locked him in second. The rest of my team was solid- spectre, treant, legion, and someone else who slips my mind. Well we got our asses whooped early. It was 30-6 at one point and I wanted them to end. I never said anything, as I hate people who type "end fast" and stuff like that, but I was mentally there. They focused me hard for whatever reason- I had 12 deaths after spirit breaker decided to ward everywhere and charged me with lifestealer any time there was an opportunity. It was downhill. Despite my excessive deaths, not a single comment was made. Surprised we held out at our base until a team fight broke out. I had an aghs and refresher ready and in the center of the fight 4 golems were deployed ready to fuck someone up. We won the team fight and made a hard push to get some buybacks out and ended up getting their ancient towers down but without enough pushing power to end the game. To my surprise, a teammate spoke on the mic "Amazing ult warlock, in commending you for that!" Even after all my previous feeding he says that. Another turtle defense and we win another fight at our base with only one tower remaining and push and end. The final score was around 70-50 in their favor. I was amazed at how my team wasn't raging at me and my 24 deaths ultimately, but it goes to show that positivity actually can keep the game alive. Had my teammates not been supportive there was no way I could have the motivation and focus to hold out.

Edit: turret to tower- I don't even play league, just came to my mind

What to do as SF versus strong lane harassers like PA, Viper, etc.

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 06:25 PM PDT

Played a game where I was unable to do anything as SF. In lane, PA dagger spams me. If I jungle, they push the wave and then hunt for me while the creeps are pounding my tower. Early wards are in the safelane and maybe farther up in the mid or river, so I can't see them coming, and their early damage is too much for me. My supports usually don't gank mid, so assuming I'm solo, it feels like I can't do anything. If I'm playing with friends or some really good support I have a chance, but 2.3k doesn't have too many supports who gank mid at all. What should I do in a situation like this? The only thing I've thought of is to just not go SF if I cant get at least 4th pick

Omni is getting picked a lot in Kiev, but always in the offlane. Is he still a good support?

Low MMR help - fresh off a 6 loss streak, need help!

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 05:28 PM PDT

Hi all!

I'm 1.7k MMR. I calibrated as soon as I possibly could, about 600 MMR and now I'm 2000 hours into the game and struggling to raise my MMR.

Just lost my 6th game in a row and really hoping someone could take a look and give me some advice.

Also, and high impact hero suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Low MMR scrub here. Looking for some tips/tricks for dealing with a couple of problem heroes.

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 09:09 AM PDT

So I'm a pretty low MMR player who bounces between 1k-1.5k although I'm sure if I played and grinded more often I'd be closer to 2k, however, that's besides the point.

I'm here to ask for some tips to help deal with a few heroes I run into regularly, yet still struggle against. These are going to be in order of difficulty for me:

1.) Axe

2.) Bloodseeker

3.) Slark

4.) Pudge (probably more an issue of my lack of awareness, but I'd like some advice that's not "stand behind creeps")

5.) Chaos Knight (rare to see, but when I play against one I usually struggle if they get even slightly ahead)

6.) Tinker (if they get ahead at all and roam I can't farm or do anything safely in any lane)

My biggest annoyance is Axe though, there don't seem to be any reliable counters, he pierces spell immunity, does pure damage, is tanky, does a ton of damage, can farm between towers early.

I'm mainly looking for any tips/tricks, counter picks, helpful items, etc, that will help me deal with some of these heroes. I've played a lot of different MOBAs before, so assume I solidly know the basics and such for MOBAs. I need more strategies for DotA-specific heroes than I need tips like "Watch for enemies missing from their lanes." or "Keep up your farm." or "Don't push the lane." You get the point.

In case it's helpful some heroes I typically play, or know how to play decently are:

Treant Protector* Phoenix Omniknight

Sniper* Mirana* Drow Ranger Riki Medusa Razor Viper Weaver

Lina* Skywrath Mage* Bane Queen of Pain Necrophos Death Prophet Winter Wyvern Jakiro*

*heroes I play the most, or are the best with

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Cant win as Crystal Maiden.

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 07:10 PM PDT

I cant consider myself a CM player because I have a terrible winrate with her (like 38%) despite playing more matches on her than anyone else. I try to win over and over on her but keep losing. I can play other supports and win games, but I feel like I have no impact in games as CM. I played a game with an alch and myself in safe vs AM offlane and I couldnt do anything. Couldnt zone him bc he would just auto attack me and win. Alch didnt have stun and didnt rotate over whenever i got jumped on. AM took every bounty rune on our side at 10 min. Someone said I shouldve pulled level 1. Is it automatically a lost lane because I didnt pull at lvl 1? It that the only thing I could do? Seems stupid and a shitty hero if that is all she can do. I read up online and people said she has a good early game presence, but that's all she can do? My dotabuff: https://www.dotabuff.com/players/16076038

Your own creeps and enemy T4s

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 06:47 PM PDT

After you destroy enemy rax, is there a simple way to make these meatheads stop attacking the fucking shrines and the 19,000 other buildings in the base, and just go with you to the towers?

Not many things more annoying than tanking double tower fire because some creep is too full of himself to get his ass in there and die for you like a man.

I bet the creeps in 5k games are smart enough to do this. They're like "fuck those shrines, you've gotta push objectives and shit." I bet the ancients in 5k aren't such feeders either.

Midas meta?

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 04:46 PM PDT

I've seen midas a lot at kiev, like it's not always your first core item , but even at minute 15++ you still make midas , is it really good now? before this , midas only core for some hero (usually one that rely on level power spike) like invoker but now looks like everyone need midas, thought?

New to DOTA, play first or learn first?

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 09:35 AM PDT

I was introduced to DOTA2 a few months ago, and want to try it out for myself.

I understand that this game is unforgiving to newbs and will kill them with toxic and cancer competitive and majority of players play it to win, instead of casually.

The question is, do I jump into pub games and figure out the ropes from there, or learn what to do before actually any real gameplay?

I have done some reading on newbies guides, and will most likely be playing as support while I'm still new. I also practiced pulling/stacking and trying to support my carry in bot games. I have also read welcome to dota you suck, and a few other guides for beginners.

I'm nowhere near being familiar with the job of a support, but I have a feeling that I can keep studying what a support should do/ what makes a good support etc and never actually play the damn game. Then again, jumping into the game at my level of proficiency really scares me because I'm afraid I will be a terrible player and lose the game for my team, something nobody looks forward to.

In the 3 pub games I have played, I vividly remember being flamed by my team the whole match because I wasn't warding well, or couldn't save them from dying etc...

How can I begin playing DOTA without being an ass to everyone else on my team? T_T

EDIT : Not sure how relevant this is, but I live in the SEA server cough cough

What is my role as storm and how do i win the game with him?

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 09:07 AM PDT

I used to be good on storm(like 100 games 65% winrate), but now i feel that i just cant win with him. My general game with him will be winning mid, snowballing and going something like 20 bloodstone charges, but cant really win, then suddenly one death and boom I cant do anything etc.

What do i do as storm to win?

How to Riki?

Unranked vs ranked math.

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 04:37 AM PDT

Does Dota use a different algorithm to find teammates and enemies for both types of games? It seems harder to win in ranked match. Does player behaviour score also cause this?

Looking for a 4 stack that doesn't mind bringing along a noob

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 11:52 AM PDT

I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this but I'm looking for a place to find a laid back 4 stack that wouldn't mind bringing along a noob player on some unranked games just for fun.

I started playing dota sometime last year with a few games. However, flamers and toxic players made playing cause so much anxiety that it just became not fun and more like work. Recently though I have been getting back into it by playing a bunch of bot games and watching streamers. At this point though bot games are not much fun cause each one is a one sided slaughter even on the unfair difficulty.

So now I am looking for four other laid back players who wouldn't mind bringing on a noob player for some games just for fun so I can play against real people again. I will most likely suck terribly because I haven't played against real people in quite a long time so I would like to find people who don't mind losing and are just looking to have fun. I have a mic that I could use if that helps.

Any help in finding people to play with would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I should add that I never calibrated when I used to play so I have absolutely no idea what my MMR is. However, I'm not the most experienced player so it's prbly on the lower end but I would like to think that I'm not the worst player in the world.

Some Questions on TA

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 07:53 AM PDT

I have been playing TA recently and having sone good success success (70% win rate after 10 games). I still feel as if I have a lot of portions to improve on.

Dotabuff: www.dotabuff.com/players/144252993/matches?hero=templar-assassin

Desolator vs blink first? I have typically been rushing deso then getting a blink after. Timing has been averaging 22 min deso and 25 minute blink. I feel like if i go blink first i would be able to get a kill on the other mid and set myself in a better place. If i dont get the deso in a decent time i feel lackluster the rest of the game. Also, after i get the core deso/blink, where do i go from there item wise?

Laning and farming patterns. I feel like ive definitely made some progress here. My last game with her i hit 530 gpm (average 432). Could someone watch this replay and critique my laning/farming? Most of this game isnt worth watching as there was a smurf slark that destroyed the opponents, but it gave me good laning practice. Match: https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3142038129

Positioning during team fights. I suck at it. I really really suck at it. I feel as if i dominate the laning stage, then just fall of. Any tips, pointers, guides, videos to watch and learn from would be appreciated. I have watched a handful of pro replays but not as in depth as i should.

Thanks in advance!

What items should I buy for SF? (Learning)

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 05:29 AM PDT

So, I'm in the mood of learning heroes and one of them is Shadow Fiend. What general items should I buy for Nevermore? As in just basic items. Because I have watched some Kiev Major tournaments and the item builds keep changing and I have trouble in which item I should proritize on him.

Very niche question / attempted analysis of smoke ganks with Lich before 0:00

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 08:39 AM PDT

I spam Lich offlane and have recently made a habit of organising smoke ganks to steal the enemy safelane rune before 0:00. Pretty standard stuff and it usually gets a kill.

However, I have noticed that when I return to lane, the decision to level Frost Blast first (instead of Sacrifice) never seemed worth it. Instead of being able to head back from their rune early and sacrifice two ranged creeps by ~1:10 or so, I'm only getting level 2 at ~1:30 and starting to sacrifice from that point on. Please correct my math if this is off (that goes for the entire post - I want to learn!), but it seems to me that this is a huge difference:

  • Sacrifice first gives us 90 experience (45 per creep at the 50% deny rate) we otherwise wouldn't have, and guarantees they get 0 from those ranged creeps. +90 swing to us.

  • Frost Blast first, and denying both ranged creeps (best case scenario) gives them 90 experience - again, 45 per creep at the 50% denial rate. We get nothing, so +90 swing to them.

  • Frost Blast first, and not managing to deny either ranged creep gives them 180 experience (2x90) and potentially some last hits. +180 swing to them.

So overall, between the best and worst case scenarios, that's a 270XP difference we're losing out on by taking Frost Blast first. For reference, reaching Level 2 takes just 240 experience. Obviously experience gets distributed between teammates, so we can't just say one hero is now a level ahead / behind in comparison... but it will definitely have a significant effect on level timings in the first five minutes.

More importantly, Sacrifice is a 'circular' ability in the sense that it gives you XP, which lets you level Sacrifice faster, which reduces the cooldown, so you can earn XP faster... and so on. Even if Sacrifice first gets you to Level 2 just 20s faster (seems about right from going over replays right now, one of each skill build), that snowballs upwards into a much bigger level disparity later on - e.g. you're hitting Level 3 30s faster, then Level 4 45s faster, then Level 5 65s faster, then Level 6 a full 1.5 mins faster... and that is huge.

Okay, so now let's consider the obvious cost of levelling Sacrifice first regardless - you might miss a kill that you otherwise could have gotten if you had the slow. It's not a stun or anything that will dramatically affect how much damage you can do to the enemy (unless your team has a Pudge trying to chase with Rot or something), so let's call it the difference between getting a kill and the enemy escaping with 200hp.

  • If you get the kill, you split something like 100-125 experience with your team, and get around 300-330 gold total (most of that going to the killer). That goes about 1/3rd of the way to making up for the experience differential which is nice, and the gold is very solid. They probably spend 50g more on a TP back to lane.

  • If you don't get the kill, you lose that experience and gold, but probably force them to use a 100g salve instead. Still nice, especially if you can harass them out of lane earlier to gain an even further advantage.

All this means that in a Frost Blast-first build, you're effectively getting a 380 gold advantage and 125 XP advantage over the other team... while with a Sacrifice-first build, you're getting 0 gold (though you might prevent them last hitting the ranged creeps, which gives them gold) but potentially a 270 XP advantage if you otherwise couldn't have denied the ranged creeps. In other words... is 145 XP worth giving up 380 gold, tops, at such an early point in the game?

(I don't think it's relevant to use Tome of Knowledge as a comparison here - that gives 500 XP for 150 gold, but is only available from the 10 minute mark when XP has much lower impact.)

I... really don't know how to answer that question to be honest. If my mid gets the last hit on the enemy hero and immediately gets his bottle, for example, then I'd much rather be safe and secure the kill for them. On the other hand, if the enemy safelane has some hero like a Luna or Wraith King (no natural escape mechanism, short range, likes XP)... I think I'd much rather have the XP to Sacrifice much more often and potentially secure a kill once I hit Level 6. Winning the lane hard against their carry just seems more worthwhile than a slightly faster Aquila for my Sniper, y'know?

What do you think? How would you make that decision (while smoke ganking and deciding which skill you need to level based on the situation)?

how to deward against support riki

Posted: 27 Apr 2017 02:10 AM PDT

this is not about how to put sentries vs riki himself, but dewarding his obs wards.
playing vs invis heroes is already frustrating enough for supports, riki can ward while invis making it even more hard to gain map control vs him.
any tips would be much appreciated.
