Inconsistencies regarding Triplat Bans and Modified DSR at Civil War

Posted: 28 Mar 2017 01:33 PM PDT

So as you all know, Civil War was one of the first large tournaments to implement the newest edition of the Recommended Ruleset (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CFaeel_cVIImEZ7ZrIrb_fSva5H3tsN24yp2INyrVLE/edit).

The inconsistencies I noticed come from two parts of this ruleset: Modified DSR and lumping Battlefield and Dreamland into one stage. For those not familiar, Modified DSR is a variation of Dave's Stupid Rule where a player may not counter pick the last stage they won on, but differs from DSR in that this strike does not last throughout the set. As an example, in a BO5 set, if Player One wins game one on Town and City, wins game two on Smashville, and loses game three, then Player One may not counterpick to Smashville but is allowed to go back to Town and City, opponent's ban permitting.

Modified DSR mostly makes a difference in BO5 sets, which were all of Civil War's Top 96 matches. From a few of these sets I noticed a small, undefined area of the ruleset that may have made a difference.

Let's take the infamous Luhtie vs ZeRo set in Top 96 Losers. On game 3, Luhtie wins over ZeRo on Battlefield. ZeRo proceeds to win game 4 and Luhtie counterpicks him to Dreamland.

The reason this is interesting is that in the new ruleset, Battlefield and Dreamland are considered one lump stage in the counterpick selection. So if the player being counterpicked bans Dreamland, the ban extends to Battlefield as well. However, in this particular scenario we see the ban from modified DSR not having the same power as the player strike.

If the DSR strike is indeed supposed to have the same power as the player strike, then it was an oversight by the TOs that may have cost ZeRo and plenty other players their sets. If the DSR strike is only meant to affect one stage regardless, then we have an inconsistency in the ruleset that makes little sense. Why treat two stages as one in one scenario and separate them in another? Naturally, this grey area isn't going to be relevant in a vast majority of matches, but in this case it obviously had a huge factor in the outcome of the tournament.

Regardless of your personal stance on this ruleset, I believe that if we want to proceed as a community towards the eSports scene that we need to take another look at our ruleset and ensure that the rules are as clear as possible.

TLDR: If a player strikes Battlefield, then Dreamland is banned. If DSR strikes Battlefield, then Dreamland is not banned, at least according to how it was handled at Civil War.

Smash 4 Character 'Honesty' Tier List: Survey

Posted: 28 Mar 2017 05:20 PM PDT

First of all to begin, I hope all of you are having a good day.

After doing some thinking for a while, and after talk about what characters could potentially be deemed as honest or not, I have decided to look over to Smash 4 Reddit in order to ask what you all think, understanding that this isn't going to end well due to it obviously being opinion based. But this is pretty much for the sake of my own personal amusement (and anyone elses), so let us begin.

This survey is going to be used for the creation for a tier list judging how 'honest' a character is in Super Smash Bros. For Wii U.

As some notes:

  • Top tiers will be considered the most honest, bottom tiers will be the ones with the most jank to them.

  • As a note, a character's overall honesty has to be based on all aspects of the character. As an example; just because Kirby can suicide opponents with his Inhale doesn't make him a jank character in entirety, he still is a character who makes rather large use of fundamentals and doesn't have anything massively ridiculous or just plain weird about him. Meanwhile another character like Rosalina can be considered to be jank due to a multitude of well-known factors.

  • The tier list, survey and so on will be done in a similar manner to SkeeterYosh's Move Tier List (except from S to D instead of S to F), along with its own sections in the comments to judge specific characters.

  • Mii Fighters will be added in, in both '1111' and 'Any' formats.

The survey will end in around 8pm EST, 30th of March. This will give plenty of time for decisions and opinions to be made.

Link to Survey: Good luck!

Abadango Pikcking Up Bayonetta

Abadango is no stranger to playing multiple characters in bracket, but how do people feel about this. A lot of Bayo hate out there already.

http://youtu.be/qORJdbe0M6k Hey guys, Prodigy here. NYC just recently gained a new melee monthly held in Brooklyn (@Lantern Hall) and I made a mini documentary on the first installment.

Starring many of New York City's top players, the tournament was a huge success hosted by No Pause Tournaments. It was such a success that the venue owner(s) and the T.O. teamed up and agreed to make it a monthly event after popular demand.

Hope you guys enjoy the video, please like, subscribe, comment, and share if you enjoy the video!

*Sorry about the typo on DJ Nintendo's name, my typos are so bad lately :'(

SoCal Project M Triple Tourney Weekend Recap: Tons of national talent, set highlights for the weekend, and more

This Weekend Recap:

S I E G E - https://smash.gg/tournament/outplayed-2017/details - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1jiLVSnaIHMkbvW1qVfrNrSOe95KeqOZ

Siege was the start of this weekend with 34 entrants in PM and a solid taste of the weekends talent. The first clash of all this out of region talent leaves us with Sothe not dropping a single game until winners finals, Dr. taking sets off Sneez & Jose V, and YadoR taking third with a ridiculous losers finals. Fun extra shout out to YadoR and Jose V, who had a great doubles run and took the entire thing.

Shark Tank Balcony - http://challonge.com/users/pineapple2048 - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxnsoN1Q0ibFnc4hw9ky4CRupjGQ4ap69

We then move on to our second event of the weekend and the most grueling, the Shark Tank. 18 PR level players faced off in two 9 man round robin pools and only four made it out into a top 8 bracket. Pools alone had Tealz managing his first win over Sosa, Sneez snagging a 2-1 over Sothe, burnstocks over blank, and then blank over Gallo. Once we hit top 8, Loyal kicks us off with a 2-0 over Gallo, who is then knocked out by burntsocks. Aidan beats blank in winners and then loses in the losers runback. Sothe and Sosa again face off in winners finals, but Sothe is unable to take the set. blank clutches out a game 5 set in losers finals and places second.

Our grand finale, with 70 entrants in both melee and project m, was We Livin' with more talent than any other event this weekend. JaimeHR, Aero, Boringman and more make their first appearance for the weekend. SoCal ends up getting beat in the Boss Rush against Gallo, although Loyal puts up quite the fight at the end. Bracket wise, we see ilovebagelz take a set off Sosa, Aidan over Aero and Boringman, Gallo over Boringman, and i lovebagelz over Gallo. Basically a mini regional with an insane bracket and tons of dope matches.

Someone made this for me for introducing them to the scene

Posted: 28 Mar 2017 09:31 AM PDT

http://m.imgur.com/pWZZ2N5 A few weeks ago a friend asked me what color Sheik I played, I told them green but I really like the melee green if the build has it, flash forward 3 weeks and I'm given this by a new member of the community who's been playing for about a month who recently took down a PR'd player. He thanked me for helping introduce him since at his first tournament I sat there and played friendlies for several hours and helped him out. Just wanted to share this with y'all to show how great this games community is sometimes

Posted: 28 Mar 2017 07:40 PM PDT

See title. Looking for a 64 major to go to (besides SNOSA), and GOML has 64. Last year it was in May so I'd think if it were the same, an announcement would have came. If it isn't happening I'll probably hit up Smashcon instead
