Smashbox vs B0XX Megathread

Since it seems there'll be no end to these vlogs, and due to a lot of discussion both on reddit and internally with our mod team, we've decided to make a megathread about this.

Many of us were originally against this idea, which is why they were all removed on sight in the past. If you want more information on our thought process up to this point, check out my thread here. There are a few reasons we're reversing our stance on this somewhat:

  1. There were some good points on the nature of this feud being between companies and not individuals. The argument was that we as mods were overstepping our responsibilities in our attempt to protect individuals from the ire of Reddit.
  2. We're locking this thread to prevent the common trend of Reddit declaring a "winner" early on and then most people bandwagoning against the "loser." Reddit is designed to promote visibility of any comment or link that takes an early lead, which means that it's usually feast or famine for the winner and loser. By locking the comments, we're doing our best to prevent that. We're trying to remove as much bias as possible so that you can make your own conclusions.
  3. In that same vein, we now have several videos from both sides. They clearly both want as many people to hear their side as possible, and so we're giving them a chance to do so with equal exposure. Again, draw your own conclusions.

Royal Flush ruling on Custom Controllers for Melee

Hi All,

Royal Flush came to a decision regarding the B0XX and Smashbox. We think it's fair and we hope other TOs adopt a similar, and potentially temporary but fair, ruleset.

As the discussion rages on between what's fair and unfair within the confines of the abilities of where custom controllers can go in the future, the reality is that only 3-4 people have one in their hands right at this moment.

Since these custom controllers can change on a whim from now til Royal Flush, and as the discussion evolves on what the community will accept as legal and fair vs not, we cannot have specific functionality rules (like digital v analog inputs or max values on digital inputs etc.).

Therefore we have to blanket ban all custom controllers for Royal Flush Melee. Once there are more commercially available options where everyone has fair access to- or there are more comprehensive functionality rules the community can agree on, I'm sure fellow TOs will explore the legality of these new options further.

Here are the storylines coming out of smash 4, and why you should keep watching

In the chaotic aftermath of civil war, there's a lot to go over. This tournament has started storylines, not resolved them.

Both team captains were dispatched by traitors (luhtie on team zero and esam on team Ally). Revenge may be sought at one point, but the real question is whether the two Evo champions will continue to buster out or whether it was simply the 2gg curse at play.

Dabuz has seemingly proven himself the best out of everyone who went to civil war: which was everybody. Can he hold his new title? Is his rosalina now here to stay, amid previous talk of him switching to olimar?

Fatality revitalized civil war viewership by being the dopest sm4sh falcon to ever do it. He kept melee fans interested and put up a hell of a fight against dabuz and the Japanese players. Will he be able to continue the level of play now expected of him, or will falcon winning a supermajor stay wizzy's pipe dream?

Team zero won the battle, but with bracket superiority, team Ally won the civil war. Even worse, the set count between zero and Ally is still dead even, with Ally giving zero a slap on the wrist when they briefly faced in crews. They have yet to resolve their conflict, and their rivalry, fully.

Anti and zinoto, ironically fighting on the side opposite to the better player of their character (zinoto on team Ally, anti on team zero), have yet to face each other to determine who is the crustiest.

Nairo now has his own shot at breaking the curse. As much as the odds seem to be stacked against him, can he break it?

Japanese players like T, Hikaru, and Tsu represent part of an incoming tide of character diversity shaking the previously stable hierarchy of players to it's core. Will mid-tier mains continue to surprise top players or are their breakout performances one-hit-wonders?

The meta is becoming increasingly unstable. Will top players be able to find the secret to consistency, or will the Japanese players, who seem to thrive off of the tumultuous nature of their scene, continue to destroy expectations and dominate NA top 8s?

Civil war was not even close to the end. It's chaotic ending only left us with more questions. Infinity war is the next chapter in this arc. If you enjoyed civil war or the crew battle and want to continue following smash 4's story: 2gg's sagas are your chance.

2GGC: Civil War - The Real Winner

Some things I noticed/funny stories.

Falln was mad that Dabuz took up all of Rosa, so he said he claims Luma. Makes sense since has best puppetry tbh.

Pereden tried drawing Marth for me but failed unfortunately :(

Tweek proclaimed to take the fist of DK lol

TKBreezy: "Of course EE would sign on Mario's freaking nose. I'll take Wii Fit's Arm."

Fuwa and Earth were super sweet when I asked!

Mr. R claims to have the best sign, says he practices it a lot. M is a bit sketch but overall it looks pretty nice.

ABA'S IS SO COOL. IT'S LIKE AN ACTUAL DANGO.

Mr. Concon was live streaming and was like "Look guys we got our first signing of the da- FUCK I SPELLED MY NAME WRONG."

Tsu, Kirihara, and Kome were super happy that I said Konichiwa to them. They were like "AHH KONICHIWA!! waves both hands in cute manner" Kome was super nice too, he asked for permission to sign since I handed the marker to Tsu first.

9B's signature is clean af.

Poyo and Salem gotta take some penmanship classes yo.

Samsora I think was half debating to either sign on Peach's boobs or ass LMAO

Ally and Dabuz were both like "I know how this works." Idk what that meant but they were happy to sign anyway :)

Tyrant's signature is also clean. My exchange with him. Me: Hey Tyrant, you got a second? Tyrant: How many seconds? Me: Enough to sign this poster? Tyrant: You know what's wrong with this poster? Me: There's no MK? Tyrant: You already know my guy.

Fatality was super nice! Told him I use Falcon and he said he would be happy to provide friendlies and tips later. Would have done it too but he was busy playing others mostly so I didn't want to bother him.

NAKAT took Pikachu first despite people saying that ESAM would get mad. Lo and behold while (I think Wrath?) was signing ESAM walks up to the poster, looks at NAKAT's name and goes AHHHHH and takes the marker and signs it. I didn't technically ask him to sign but I was going to anyway LOL

Marss claimed he was gonna take 15 stocks in the crew battle. Not quite but he did his job :)

I requested Zinoto write Antisux because I was Team Ally LOL

Everyone was super nice overall! I think the Japanese players were the most dedicated to their characters because they seemed really happy when their character was on it.

EE really wanted Mario's nose.

Zenyou signed and proceeded to body me in doubles.

Javi's looks like a buster sword too. Thought it was cool.

Champ honestly looked genuinely happy to sign the poster. I'm glad he was, he was the most important signature.

If anyone else is curious about anything on the poster let me know! Plan to frame it once I get the rest of top 50, D1, Max Ketchum, and some more!

WTF!? Philly's Next Big Smash 4 Tourney Will Premier a New Bracket Type!

The Philly natives at Bros. Calamity & The Lab are bringing back the Brotherly Love tournament series and giving it a complete overhaul. They're bringing in a top player, adding free events with prizes, running a new bracket type all over a 2 day event.

The new bracket was conceptualized by players of the SSB64 community and first applied at Keystoned, a SSB64 regional event. This event was received very well both by the public and it's participants. So without further ado, here is the information you have been waiting for!

Brotherly Love will run the Waterfall (WTF) bracket type. This bracket consists of multiple phases of round robins and double elimination brackets where only the best players advance from each phase.

Phase 1 is Placement Pools

  • Players are seeded into multiple pools and will play in a round robin format
    • Top 2 from each pool advance to Division 1, the 4th phase and final round
    • 3rd/4th place from each pool advance to Division 2, the 3rd phase
    • The remaining players are placed in Division 3, the 2nd phase
  • Phase 1 is where unknowns get a chance to cause an upset

Phase 2 is Division 3 Pools

  • This is another wave of Round Robin pools
  • The players who did not place well from placement pools duke it out here.
    • These are generally lower skilled players so they get to play others who are more close in skill rather than get destroyed by top seeds
  • Top 2 of each pool advance to Division 2

Phase 3 is Division 2 Pools/Bracket

  • This phase can be either another wave of round robin pools or a double elimination bracket.
  • The players are generally mid range to high in skill level.
  • Top 2 advance to Division 1

Phase 4 is Division 1, The Final Round

  • This phase is a double elimination bracket
    • If phase 2 was DE, players who advanced from D2 do NOT start in losers side
  • Top 16 matches will be Bo5
  • This group will have the high to top players so matches will be intense

Important Things To Note

  • Top players are rewarded for doing well in Phase 1 by advancing to the final round
    • They are also automatically entered into a free entry side event
  • Lower skilled players are rewarded by having multiple opportunities to play players better than them, and at the same time, of similar skill level
  • Division 3 is a built in amateur bracket
    • This is a great chance to get better in a tournament environment so it really doesn't matter how much experience you have before hand, you'll get a lot of it here.
  • You don't have to worry about shelling out $40+ and going 0-2. You can lose every single placement pools match and still have a chance to advance from Division 3 to Division 1 where you could win!
  • This bracket format is FANTASTIC for PR! We get to see match ups we've never seen before. We an extensive list of head to head match ups for new players and existing PR'd players too!

Additionally, Brotherly Love will have a reward shop which will sell Bros. Calamity, The Lab, Brotherly Love and Smash.GG merch. The proceeds will be split between the cost of each item and providing additional rewards for the event.

  • Pot bonus
  • Upgraded venue
    • Increased entrant cap
  • Bring in more top players

This could potentially go from being a 2 day regional to a 2-3 day mini-major!

The entrant cap starts at 80 players so make sure to pre-register now! (will increase depending on the success of the Smash.GG reward shop. This will be announced at a later time)

A lot of times you see a fairly unknown player make an upset and it was a 1 time thing, morenof a fluke than anything. And although Locus beat Mr. R back at ZeRo Saga, he really showed how strong he was this weekend, beating Nairo and Ally, half of the top 4 players, and only barely lost to Marss and lost to Rosalina, Ryu's potentially worst MU.

And more than that, just this kids positivity is infectious. Coney was saying that we need more joyful people like him in the community, and I agree. Also

Colossal | Poskii has announced his retirement

Hello, I have always loved Smash starting from 64 to Melee to Brawl to 4.

I really loved seeing our community support each other from Melee to Smash 4 and also vice versa when it happens. I made a compilation of tweets of Melee players supporting Smash 4 in case anyone was interested in seeing them! I just love this game haha.
