Heroes Summit 2.0 - it's happening... what are they talking about?

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 12:20 PM PDT

Here's what we know: there's a large contingency of Heroes content creators in California right now for what can only be assumed is Heroes Summit 2.0. The last time this happened we got (arguably) the biggest content drop ever with the new ranked system and new heroes (Chromie & Medivh). So let's have some fun and imagine what's being discussed…

  • New progression system – ok, this one is easy and the odds on favorite. But what does it look like? They dropped hints about it at Blizzcon (uncapped hero progression, account levels that mimic total-hero-levels, more consistent rewards for hero-leveling). I'm excited for whatever is coming but curious to hear what's on people's wish list.
  • Loot system – we got a teaser (UI change spotted with in-development vid). This one feels like something that goes along with new progression system but it leaves much to the imagination…
  • New heroes – feels like a good time for a new tank. Finally time to add the true KT to the game? Who do you want and what role do they fill in the nexus?
  • Hero classification system – seems like they're already implementing changes that coincide with this (recent changes to QM matchmaking rules).
  • Themed event – personally would love to see a new map like alterac valley/arathi basin/warsong gulch. Overwatch/Blackthorne ideas too.
  • Observer UI improvements – with the new in-game UI changes this seems like something we'll hear about sooner rather than later… or maybe the timeline for this is longer than I imagine (like Blizzcon)
  • API (Application Programming Interface) – This is probably not as consumer facing as other potential announcements, but we know the community (vocal minority?) wants it. An announcement like this could really open the possibilities of what content creators can produce and upend entrenched stalwarts (hotslogs).
  • Clans/Guild system – not high on my list but definitely something we know is being worked on
  • In-game voice chat – I've used the Battle.n…er…BlizzLauncher chat and while void of any features, works fine. Should be in-game already. Hopefully coming soon.
  • HGC changes – new system seems to be a resounding success. What else can they do to bring this to the next level?
  • Something my brain can't even imagine…

EDIT: Adding /u/McJarvis ideas cause they're all good

  • replay/reconnect overhaul
  • ability to observe games live
  • ability to download/watch recent master/GM games played in Hero League

EDIT2: Some more good ideas

  • Map editor
  • gifting
  • Blizz implementation of Hotslogs
  • swaps in TL/HL* (seems like people are split on whether this is a good idea in HL)
  • new nova skins

A shout out to the Healers

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 07:39 AM PDT

Healing is one of the most thankless jobs in Heroes (Or any game) because they are not flashy most people take a good support for granted and we shouldn't . Everyone notices the power slide but not the followup root. To those support mains who keep us alive I truly thank you, specially since I can't play support (50 games 2 wins) .

To all stealth players: you are NOT completly invisible!!!

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 05:11 AM PDT

I played as muradin vs a nova on BHB. The vision was ours and the nova went into a bush around the vision. I jumped into her face and stunned her. After a few minutes i stunned her out from stealth again. We have won easily.

After the game i got a massage from the nova player:"fu*king cheater! I hope you die to cancer"

Me and my friends laughed so hard lmao.

But guys i am not kidding! Most player can spot you. Without magic and hacks ;)

[OC] Battleground Win Rate by Hero Cards - Platinum, Diamond, and Master Leagues

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 08:32 AM PDT

Hello /r/heroesofthestorm!

Based on user feedback from my battleground specific hero win-rate graphs, I have created specific win rate cards for each individual hero in Heroes of the Storm.

What is it?

Below you will find hero win rate cards that compare their current overall win rate to their map specific win rates for Platinum, Diamond, and Master leagues.

This can help you identify on which battlegrounds specific heroes excel or struggle. These are simple visualizations meant for easy interpretation and use.

Hero Cards

Assassin Specialist Support Warrior
Alarak Azmodan Auriel Anub'arak
Chromie Gazlowe Brightwing Artanis
Falstad Medivh Kharazim Arthas
Greymane Murky Li Li Chen
Gul'dan Nazeebo Lt. Morales Dehaka
Illidan Probius Lucio Diablo
Jaina Sgt. Hammer Malfurion E.T.C.
Kael'thas Sylvanas Rehgar Johanna
Kerrigan Xul Tassadar Leoric
Li-Ming Zagara Tyrande Muradin

Nova Sonya
Ragnaros Stitches
Raynor Tyrael
Samuro Zarya
The Butcher
Thrall
Tracer
Tychus
Valeera
Valla
Varian
Zeratul
Zul'jin

What happens when patches change win rates?

I will continue to update these charts at my blog, ggplots.com. You can also follow me on Twitter @ggplots for these and other Heroes of the Storm charts and infographics.

As always, I'm open to any and all feedback and suggestions for future work! Thanks for checking these out and good luck in your Hero League games!

EDIT: Abathur, The Lost Vikings, and Cho'Gall have been removed due to small sample size and large variance in win rates.

EDIT 2: Imgur album for all hero cards. In the future, these will most likely be hosted on ggplots.com.

Varian Banner is audible globally

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 03:23 AM PDT

So Varian still has this kind of funny/sad bug where when he places his banner down, the music can be heard from anywhere on the map by both teams. Needless to say that leads to some awkward moments, like when your team is trying to sneak a boss, when suddenly the Alliance national anthem goes off lol.

Intended? or something that slipped through the cracks?.

UI Request: Remember talented abilities position on action bar

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 08:53 AM PDT

Since the dawn of time it bothers me that additional spells on actionbar fill slots sequentially, and this way you can't have any permanent keybindings to talent abilities, without repositioning them manually each game. Never heard anyone mention it as a problem. Maybe i'm missing something?

Why does butcher heal when hitting a marked varian that is parrying?

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 02:24 PM PDT

Title is the question. I recently got varian and had to fight butcher so went the full parry build. The butcher's thing is based on the damage he deals but despite dealing 0 damage to varian when he's parrying he still gets the massive heal. It makes trying to peel him and otherwise a bit of a pain and made me regret not grabbing other talents to deal with him.

Suggestion: Add a loading bar with random text to HOTS.

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 12:26 PM PDT

In Hearthstone, there is a loading bar that says funny things while waiting for a game. Since queue times in HOTS can be long, I thought of a few sayings that would be funny for a HOTS bar such as:

  1. Cho is waking up Gall
  2. Finding the Lost Vikings
  3. Locating Nova
  4. Nerfing the newest released hero
  5. Preparing for Illidan

Can you guys think of more?

Maybe Blizzard should do to pros what Riot did with League pros in LCS...

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 05:28 AM PDT

What really made me think "wow", Riot really cares about their community was when they started banning pro players from competitive play and LCS for poor behavior in solo q, an example I can think of is IwillDominate and I believe he was banned for exactly a year (or one full season) of competitive play because of his toxicity in soloQ. Would it help the community and maybe set a better example if Blizzard were to do the same with HGC pros who are toxic in HL? Especially since HGC players are given accounts that have all heroes unlocked, thats quite a bit of money if a "normal" person were to purchase all heroes, and to be given that and the behave toxic is... hmm... not ideal. Apologies if this came of as a rant. Ideas?

Proper Nuke Placement

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 03:47 AM PDT

I just wanted to ask some opinions about where to drop nukes, because when ever I do what I think is best, I get yelled at.

In the early game there are basically two options:

  • Drop the nuke so it partially damages both turrets, the gate, the fountain, and the fort;

  • or drop the nuke so it gets the center damage bonus on the gate and one of the towers, destroying them and enabling the minions in lane to quickly destroy the other tower and begin pushing the fort while simultaneously making it a lot safer to lane against opposing heroes in the lane, but dealing no damage to the fort.

To me taking down the tower and gate early yields a lot more benefit than slightly damaging the fort and allowing the vision blocking gate to stand and both gate towers to clear minion waves.

Am I wrong in this?

When it comes to keeps I am conflicted... its keep damage and its much later in the game.

A couple points I forgot to mention:

  • Mules

  • People have to dive a bit deeper to drop the nuke in the middle

You know, playing a couple more times with this in mind I think I am going to agree that dropping it to hit all the structures is generally more useful as the nuke often zones the enemy heroes so far out of the way that you can clear what is left of the towers before they get back in position to oppose you.

[Suggestion] Add nexagons for every HGC team

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 03:23 AM PDT

Shop Suggestion: Add an HGC tab in the shop and allow us to purchase nexagons from every HGC team. It would allow players to support their favorite teams and Blizzard could invest the money to increase the production quality and size of HGC tournaments which might lead to an increasing HGC popularity. The nexagons could be just white with the teams symbol, while actual championship mounts could be coloured nexagons (like the ones we have atm) or they could be add colour varriations to championship nexagons. We even could add the portraits for every HGC team to the shop.

Serious Topic, genuine discussion please: Smurfing

Posted: 27 Mar 2017 03:34 PM PDT

This is a big and serious topic I'd like discussed thoroughly as I think it's actually quite important.

(WARNING WALL OF TEXT) (please don't make this post about me I want it to be about the state of the game. I'm just a random Plat 5 guy)

If you're only response is going to be 'you are where you are supposed to be' then that's really not the point of the discussion so please try not to miss the point. this is a not an ELO hell qq thread. This is supposed to be a topic about system design.

How beneficial is it to smurf? Let me explain

(This is aimed at people who play every day)

there are 3 situations in which it seems desirable. in either category I see all players falling at some time or another.

1: you were a new player to this game. you've never played MOBA's before. You are terrible to begin with. You play about 200 games and then decide that playing this game is important to you. You play a lot of League and are in Silver and decide you want to be good. So you study your ass off. You've played other games before so you get APM and stuff and so you work on yourself and improve like fuck. Lets say you do a massive amount of work on your play in reguards to you watch guides and study pro games and learn a fuck load without having to work it all out yourself. The best teacher is experience, the second best is other people's experience.

At this point you decide it may be better to smurf than to Grind your MMR up from the crap point you have it now?

2: You tanked you MMR in Alpha coz you were fucking around and expected a hard reset when the game went live. and that didn't come. You've now played over 4000 games and are sick of being in Gold coz you believe you are much better.

3: You were poor and lived in an area with 'Bad' internet and now you don't. You've just bought nice new gear and have faster internet and can now play at the level that matches your skill.

OK. Big point here. Let's assume that this player IS actually way better than their MMR now. They've studied their ass off. they understand the game. They've ''crammed'' and have learnt what they are doing but their MMR certainty is too solid to grind up.

(A lot of people will ignore this part, the point of this conversation is not whether this person is better than his MMR or not. Let's assume for this topic that he/she IS way better)

Let's say this player is actually of Diamond 4 quality but is currently playing at say Silver 2. or Gold 5.

What are his/her options? In other MOBA's you can sometimes reset you stats and MMR with a payment. HoN for example. Or you can just smurf with a new account. all heroes are free so you just start again with your new and improved skills.

HotS is different in that when you smurf it costs you time or money to get back to being about to play league again. Is this time and/or money worth it?

OK fine so. Is it better to smurf or to grind?

it seems to me that everyone who plays this game even semi seriously has a smurf. Is that an intentional design? Is there too much benefit to smurfing? is that ok and we don't care? or should it be discouraged? through a better way to get a second chance.

Seems to me a game like this punishes you for the player you used to be. and Doesn't reward you much for spending time OUT OF GAME improving your game play and game knowledge. That's not very fun. If I'm suddenly good because I've non stopped watched pro games and dedicated time to being good I don't want to log back in and be matched with the same people as before? Not fun? or fine?

Let's say you are Gold 5. and are good so you have a 55% win rate in HL. so out of 20 games you go 11 - 9. which is 400 points lets say. it takes approx 1000 points to rank up. so you should rank up every 50 games yes? so to get up to say Diamond 4 where we've decided you actually belong. you have to play 550 games to get to D4? (please correct my math if I'm wrong) Is that 550 games of your life best spent starting a new account which can get it's MMR 'boosted' in quick match and then transfer that MMR into their first Hero League placements?

If so should someone do a 'How to Smurf' guide? so we can all know how to use the system to be a higher rank? (and theoretically get higher quality matches although if everyone does this obviously the matches won't be a good quality but this happens in other MOBA's all the time in which you can just smurf or reset for a payment anyway)

I was always of the opinion that smurfing ''ruins'' the game and is dishonest. but everyone does it so i think I'm wrong.

I would love to know the opinions of some very high ranking players or some players who did smurf and get much higher/lower than their main account. or even some pros or blizz people?

and If you have a smurf. Why did you smurf? Or if not, why not?

please throw in your experience so i may learn.

(I may edit this a few times to make it clearer and explain my points better)
