Heroes of the Dorm only streaming on Facebook live is terrible

currently live as of this post: https://www.facebook.com/HeroesEsports/videos/1264079123675487/?hc_ref=PAGES_TIMELINE

This is a really crap implementation. And they are going to do this method all the way to the finals, no twitch. I don't see any ESPN mentions.

This is horrible.

Make Abathur and Xul master skins change their minions

Posted: 22 Feb 2017 08:57 AM PST

Their minions should reflect their mastery over evolution/necromancy. Its just that it feels minions are an essential part of them.

When enemy master rehgar puts down his totem needlessly to flaunt his shamanism,

When enemy master muradin hits his heroic after the 5v5 ends to showoff (or possibly because it just came off cooldown and they could pursue a teamwipe with it)

When enemy master chen swanks on his quality porcelain that supremes incomparable all over the Nexus,

Whilst my lonely minion(s) who has a swag rating of 17 out of 100 pitifully march into enemy tower,

i cri everytim.

Burning Rage Disband vs Block Major Regions

Posted: 22 Feb 2017 11:53 AM PST

Hi, my name is Jschritte ex-player of Burning Rage and current player of the Infamous Gaming team (Team qualified for the Clash – IEM Katowice).

A lot of people do not know what happened for the end of the Burning Rage team and I am here to clarify some facts. Burning Rage History http://www.gosugamers.net/heroesofthestorm/teams/13116-burning-rage

Our team had been together for one year and four months and I believe that it was one of the oldest team in the competitive world scenario. We won all the official championship in our region since 2015(Latam). We all knew all the difficulties that we had in our region (no financial investment, small prize pool, not enough teams for competitive events, etc. Our focus since the beginning was to stand out in our region so we could compete equal in major's regions and that kept us motivated to stay together for a long time. We had several problems in the meantime, four of our players had visa problems in 2015 and even with all those problems our team didn't give up. In 2015 our team did bootcamps and scrims with other teams around having issue with 150+ pings.

Maybe you will remember this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=min7cqKbLWg

In 2016 we remain united and with the same mentality, solve the visa problems and continue winning the championships of our region so that we could have some recognition out there. At the end of the year, at Blizzcon, we had another problem, our captain / shotcaller Typhex's visa was denied 2x, this would have been 6x since we had the visa of a member of our team. But even so the thought did not change, now only 1 player was left to get a visa so we could try something out there.

Now comes one of the reasons that led to the Disband of our team.

You must remember Wiz, 1 player from a MAJOR region who wanted to play in another MAJOR region: https://www.reddit.com/r/heroesofthestorm/comments/48hdca/hello_this_is_wiz_i_want_to_explain_my_situation/

Because of only 1 player Blizzard had changed the rules (a player could only play in another region if he was living for 6 months in that region) for 1 month. We played Blizzcon without our tank / captain / shotcaller Typhex and even then we got good games against the American Denial team and the ANZ region. On the same day of our games we got in touch with some American organizations and they had an interest and keep us in NA for 1 month and try to solve the Typhex visa so that we could play qualifying for the HGC that would occur after 1 month of Blizzcon. As we were behind the scenes of the event, we contacted the Blizzard team directly to communicate about this interest of the organizations, we received the information that if we respected the rules of 1 month, we could play. On the same day tonight, we were told that we could not play qualifying because the rule would change to 6 months, player / team, and we could play the Open Division that would occur in 2017. That was one of the biggest frustrations That we passed, because all our main purpose had been stopped by the game's own organizer, it was not a problem of visa, incentive, etc., that we could solve internally, it was a decision that was beyond our reach. Even though our team did not give disband after Blizzcon, our mentality still remained the same, stand out, get a space out there and move to a major region. We got a new organization that had an interest in sponsoring us and putting us in a GH to play the Open Division and try to get a place for the HGC (we would give up the championships in our region to play the Open Division). Again did we communicate to Blizzard about such interest and what happened? We were told that we could not play the Open Division either because the 6-month rule would also apply to the Open Division. In these rules, any team that wants to join the HGC, has to spend a year living in the NA, without being able to play any official blizzard championship and still have to give up the championships of their region (everyone knows that these conditions are impossible in any That is the game). As these decisions were no longer within our reach to try to solve, some of the players were discouraged with the game, because there was no more sense to keep playing and as a team, and our focus from the beginning was always trying to go outside.

Why do I want so much to leave our region? You should remember this post:

No solution was taken, no response was given by Blizzard, the same problem will occur in qualifying for the 2nd clash of 2017. Our region has the smallest prize pool in the world, we have almost no disclosure of the game (if we had the Promotion of the Copa America winner on Blizzard's official website) and the professionalism of e-sport is still something that is beginning.

I continue to play and dedicate myself 24/7 to the game (stream, training and championships), but the discouragement is increasing in feel as if the own game developer stops us from evolving.

Thank you very much for the support of the whole community. Jschritte

QOL: Brighten the minimap range indicator for global abilities.

Posted: 22 Feb 2017 01:26 PM PST

As it is, the minimap range indicator for things like Azmodan's globes, Abathur's mines, and Falstad's flight is much too dim. See for yourself. It's possible to see it, but imagine needing to see that line while you're fighting. I tried colourblind mode, but if anything, that just makes the issue worse. My proposed fix would be something like this - the same color used for the range indicators of globals on the main screen.

Calculating ELO Rankings for HGC

Posted: 22 Feb 2017 04:22 PM PST

Edit: Now with more Korea

So to improve my Monte Carlo models, I am working on an Elo system for HGC. My current system operates using all regional games being k = 30 (editted down from 40 since initial post due to simulation changes reflecting binomial distribution instead of 2 level uniform) for each GAME (not match). Then, after each game, I adjust the participating teams ELO rating using the formulas here. Special thanks to u/chalonverse for the link. Games at the clashes will be k=40, games at the Brawl and Blizzcon will be k=50. While 40 is a bit high for a baseline, the reasoning for this is we just haven't had enough play to see the seperation we should expect with lower values of k. K=40 seems to create a better set of ratings in my subjective opinion.

Ultimately, I will include all 32 HGC teams, including China and South Korea. For now I just have NA and EU.

Realize that all teams were set to 1500 Elo at the beginning of the HGC season (after the qualifiers). While this may not be obviously fair, since teams like Gale Force and Misfits should expect to be higher than beGenius and No Tomorrow based on experience, we still see a healthy enough seperation through empirical methods that injecting subjectivity seems unnecessary.

Reasonably, you would also expect EU to be higher. I would as well. However, since this starts with 2017, and NA and EU haven't played yet, this won't be taken into account yet. This is why the Clash will be worth more, so that Elo change trickles back to the winning region and affects their overall region average more significantly.

With that, here they are:

*still figuring out what to do with China. I have these three listed since they are doing the Eastern Clash

Team Elo Score
L-5 1662
MVP Black 1658
Misfits 1632

HGC Highlights - Week 5

Posted: 22 Feb 2017 09:17 AM PST

I analyzed the official HotS Twitter Account (@BlizzHeroes). Here's what I found.

Posted: 22 Feb 2017 03:18 PM PST

For the full analysis, see here.

Over the weekend, I web scraped @BlizzHeroes and performed some text analysis.

Here is a graph of @BlizzHeroes' most used words. And here's a word cloud. There's much talk of the Nexus, Heroes, and patches. Newer Heroes (such as Valeera, Lucio, Zul'jin) also receive mentions, likely for promotional purposes.

I then ran a sentiment analysis. From the graph, we can see @BlizzHeroes is quite positive! Props to the social media managers for keeping spirits high.

Finally, I plotted the sentiment over time. Note that this graph has been smoothed. The actual plot is much uglier.

It appears that sentiment decreased around the holiday season. Do the social media managers turn into the Grinch? Probably not (still unconfirmed).

Most likely, Blizzard's social media workers are on vacation and making fewer (positive) posts.

Thanks for reading! In the future, I will try to ascertain sentiments on Lucio.

Have any suggestions for web scraping? Let me know!

The weirdest buff Uther needs

Posted: 22 Feb 2017 01:43 PM PST

Self kill button, either as a talent or baseline ability

Now i know what your thinking, is this dude on drugs?

So Uther is weak atm and its his healing capabilities that lag him behind, he has great burst heals but the cooldowns are very long so he sucks at anythung but burst healing. When he is in his eternal devotion (dead) state his healing goes thru the roof but all of his utility is gone.

If he had a talent at 13 or 16 that killed him instantly (or baseline) he could make the sacrifice when his team needs it most. The risk v reward would be massive, the skill cap on the hero jumps and the plays just imagian the plays.

Of course you can just yolo into the enemy randomly atm but thats not going to save your Valla thats at 30% when all your CDs are on cooldown...

Crazy idea, but fun. Fits the lore to as paladins are all about "for the greater good" even if that means sacrificing them self

Bot AI for disconnects needs to be upgraded

Posted: 22 Feb 2017 12:10 PM PST

Short post, to the point:

If you're not going to give us the option to reroll a game when someone afks/disconnects at the very beginning of the game, we need the bot AI to be less pants-on-head retarded. I'm a player hovering around plat/diamond, so nothing extraordinary, but having bots work with the regular AI rather than a higher difficulty makes them actively detrimental to the game. You're not playing down a man, you're playing down TWO men because you're trying to actively deal with the awful situations the bot goes into.

I just got out of a game where our Gazlowebot decided to go lazer build on Sky Temple and consistently attempt to 1v5 and split push. Pings weren't even working properly; when told to retreat from its split push, the bot would hearth for about one second before cancelling it and going directly back to what it was doing. If the player the bot is leashed to dies, all bets are off, and it will usually make the worst possible decision in that situation.

Yes, I've seen the gifs where an ETCbot gets a crazy 5 man mosh or a Varianbot escapes a crazy gank attempt, but the reality is that for every one time this happens, there's about a thousand where the bot sinks the game completely for the team that's a man down. I think that even giving the bots Elite difficulty on a disconnect wouldn't be crazy; the reality is that their mechanical skill is still the only thing they can use since they don't really have a concept of coordinating with the a team. Even if Elite is too much, please, for the love of god, give us more than the nonfunctional mongoloids we have to deal with. And improve the bots too.

Why do so many people call Blackheart's Bay the worst map?

Posted: 22 Feb 2017 08:50 PM PST

It is like the only map in the game where you can win through pure PVE and avoiding fights. Every other map is ''Okay, immortals are up, time to go team deathmatch'' or ''Tribute/Altar is up, once again forced to fight''.

BHB is the only map where you can legit just play the map and avoid rubbing your face on the enemy team, to come out ahead and win. We need more maps like that, where you can outsmart your opponents rather than just brute-force them.

HGC Monte Carlo Simulator Crucible Predictions - NA and EU

Posted: 22 Feb 2017 08:12 AM PST

Edit: New Batch of ELO based predictions - https://www.reddit.com/r/heroesofthestorm/comments/5vmnp8/calculating_elo_rankings_for_hgc/

Now that the clash is upon us, I'm setting my sights towards the rest of Phase 1. I don't want to focus on the clash itself as individual playoff simulators are noisy, since half of the teams will play 3 or fewer matches. Monte Carlo simulators aren't the best in playoff situations.

But what this can be good for is for predicting the Crucible. I use 10,000 simulations for each model, which is where I began to see high stability. At this point I'm seeing what I would estimate to be a +/-1% margin of error between the simulation answer and the true mathematical answer.

My source code is available at: https://github.com/pmcburne/hgc-predictor/

The Crucible
At the end of Phase 1 (Saturday May 13 is the last day of Phase 1 games), the bottom two teams will be sent to the Crucible, where they could be replaced in HGC by teams currently in the open division. The top 6 are safe however.

Mid Season Brawl
While I won't cover mid-season brawl predictions yet - Edit: It's here!!! - (I'm developing an ELO system to automate my adjusted biased predictions) I will look at first place odds. There are two ways to get to the Mid Season Brawl for EU and NA. Because each team has played 7 games, and each team will play 14, this ELO system should become more accurate (I likely will NOT be including the Clash in the ELO system as only the top 3 playing makes it a bit biasing, and accounting for that bias is just too much work).

1) Get first place in your division - If you get 1st place, you qualify. That's it. I have odds for this below.

2) Get 2nd through 6th place and win the linear playoff - This is a little bit weirder. This is not a "True" playoff. The linear playoff means 2nd place only has to win one match to go to the Brawl, whereas 6th place would have to win 4 matches. The playoff is seeded as:

  • Game 1) #6 vs. #5
  • Game 2) Winner Game 1 vs. #4
  • Game 3) Winner Game 2 vs. #3
  • Game 4) Winner Game 3 vs. #2

Tiebreakers
The tiebreaker for 6th/7th place for the Crucible (as well as 1st/2nd for the Brawl) is the same as it was for the clash for 2nd/3rd place.

  1. Head-to-head - At the end of phase 1, it's possible to have two teams tied that are 1-1 against each other. There's always the possibility of a 2-2 triangle as well, any number of other things. If head-to-head cannot resolve a tie, it proceeds to the next steps. Note that I assume head-to-head refers to MATCH record, not MAP record. I have not been able to get a clear answer from anyone at Blizzard if, for example, Gale Force beats Team Freedom 3-0 in the second half of Phase 1, who would have head-to-head advantage. Would it be a tie because it's 1-1 Match record, or Gale Force favored because it's a 5-3 Map record? I assume in my simulator that this is a tie. If I'm wrong, i can fix it later.
  2. Number of 3-0 wins
  3. Number of 3-1 wins
  4. Sudden Death Match (technically 3-2 wins is listed as a tiebreaker but it mathematically cannot make a difference).

On average, Sudden death matches appear in less than 1 in 50 simulations throughout my run of doing this, so don't get your hopes up.

North America Crucible Odds

50/50 Model - assume all games are 50/50. This is a naive model that helps explore the possible moreso than the likely. However, given that I'm still developing my ELO methodology for my adjusted model (now that I have a large enough sample size for it to be reasonably reliable), this is all I have for now:

Rank Team Crucible%
1 Team Naventic 70.4 %
2 No Tomorrow 68.8 %
3 Team Freedom 41.5 %
4 Superstars 14.9 %
5 B-Step 4.6 %
6 Gale Force eSports 1.3 %
7 Team 8 0.2 %
8 Tempo Storm 0.2 %

Many people have noticed that there appears to be "tiers" in NA. The top 3 seem to be above the next 2, appear to be aove the bottom 3. The only "inter-tier" upset we saw was Team Freedom over Gale Force eSports. This is reflected in the rankings here. Team Freedom has an edge over the others in the bottom tier because of that upset. Seeing Naventic so far down the list (lower than No Tomorrow because their only win is a 3-2) would have been a shock at the start of Phase 1, but here we are.

Europe Crucible Odds

Rank Team Crucible%
1 beGenius 87.0 %
2 Synergy 64.5 %
3 Tricked eSports 30.0 %
4 Playing Ducks 16.7 %
5 Team Expert 3.1 %
6 Team Dignitas 0.6 %
7 Fnatic 0.1 %
8 Misfits 0.0 %

As much as the top 3 are somewhat clear in NA, they can't hold a candle to the top 3 in EU. The top 3 in EU only lost to each other, and the EU has been fairly linear with very few so-called "upsets". beGenius's struggles put them in significant trouble.

North America First Place Odds

Rank Team 1st Place %
1 Tempo Storm 40.4 %
2 Team 8 37.1 %
3 Gale Force eSports 17.0 %
4 B-Step 3.9 %
5 Superstars 0.8 %
6 Team Freedom 0.2 %
7 Team Naventic 0.0 %
8 No Tomorrow 0.0 %

Not a surprise to see the top 3 matching up here. Gale Force is at a disadvantage because of two losses, but at 1/6 odds for first place is still very much alive. Still, Gale Force mostly control their own destiny, in that if they win out and manage 3-0s where they should find them, their head to head would give them the edge over Tempo Storm, and it would come down to tiebreakers against Team 8.

Europe First Place Odds

Rank Team 1st Place %
1 Misfits 54.5 %
2 Fnatic 31.0 %
3 Dignitas 10.7 %
4 Team Expert 3.0 %
5 Tricked eSports 0.1 %
6 Synergy 0.0 %
7 Playing Ducks 0.0 %
8 beGenius 0.0 %

Misfits controls their own destiny outright. Fnatic would need to win out and beat Misfits on tiebreakers or have Misfits lose twice. Dig needs to win out and have Misfits lose to someone else, and then win on tiebreakers. Other teams are distant enough odds to not warrant immediate scrutiny
