“The Head of the Snake” devs here – ask us anything!

Posted: 08 Feb 2017 02:00 PM PST

Hi all,

Greetings from Seattle, where Jormag is now active. He knocked out our power and corrupted our data. Humans rallied together and fought back, through the dark night, and by dawn this morning we emerged victorious. ;)

Today we're happy to launch the new Living World episode "The Head of the Snake" with its new open-world zone, plus the new raid wing "Bastion of the Penitent", new legendary rifle "The HMS Divinity", the Thaumanova Fractal rework and more.

We're shipping on Wednesday, a day off our usual schedule, but still have devs from most of the shipping teams with us today to chat about all this new content. Here's who's with us.

From the Living World team – Andrew Gray, Andy McLeod, Heather Conover, Joe Kimmes, Kirk Williford, Morgan Brown, Matt Pennebaker

From the Fractals team – Benjamin Arnold, Cameron Rich

From the Raids team – Bobby Stein, Byron Miller, Crystal Reid, Paul Ella

From the PvP team – Ben Phongluangtham, Grant Gertz

From the WvW team – McKenna Berdrow

From the engine team – Ester Sauter, Jon Olson

From the UI team – Duncan Kay

From the comms team – Elisabeth Kerstein, Gaile Gray

As always, we're here to enjoy this release with you and chat about all this new content, but not to reveal future story or development directions.

And with that, let's get started!

Mo

Edit: Thank you everyone for joining us today! We have some devs still answering but I'm going to officially wrap up the AMA. We'll see you back in the game.

Did you also notice the ancient chest behind a waterfall in Lake Doric?

I'll give you a few hints: it's a puzzle, not an event. It involves a ghost and a blue fire. Look to the south.

ArenaNet's official stance on 3rd party DPS meters

Posted: 08 Feb 2017 03:04 PM PST

Since the clear answer we were looking for is buried in 3 seperate responses in the AMA, I figure I would put it all in one place for people to see.

From /u/ChrisCleary:

We have no problems with players using a 3rd party tool whose scope is only to collect and visualize combat data gathered directly from the game client. Anything beyond that scope is still considered a violation of the User Agreement.

Source

You are correct (that memory reading DPS readers are OK as long as they are only parsing combat data). Combat data is defined as any information that is created due to the usage of skills or impact on players due to skill usage (by the player/s or an outside source).

Source

We engaged in significant internal discussion about DPS meters even before we launched raids. Our discussions initially revolved around what we were going to do, but ultimately we wanted to see where the community was going.

We were not absolutely clear on our stance in relation to DPS meters because the ways they would be used (or potentially abused) was still evolving. In such a case, where we have not made a definitive statement yet are continuing to discuss internally, we did not want to take action against players until we have made our stance clear.

Now that we have set the bar and tool creators know what is acceptable, we are hoping that tool creators will make adjustments to their tools to make them compliant with our requirements and more accessible to a wider audience.

We will give our community plenty of time to make this adjustment before considering any action directly against tools or players that use them.

[Data-Mining] Upcoming features from the February 8 patch

Posted: 08 Feb 2017 10:19 AM PST

Hello everybody!

Today's patch was huge (about 1400 new lines) so it took a bit longer to sift through everything. I've made sure I've left out a couple of mini-pets and items that could be considered story spoilers so you don't have to worry about those.

I'll update this post over time, enjoy!

Edit: After going through about 600+ chat codes I think this is about it.. the legendary armor links currently shows the Refined Envoy skins and I couldn't find links for 2 of the pieces.

Necrotic Glider (500 gems)

Posted: 08 Feb 2017 09:39 AM PST

Late patch, sure, but in the end i do feel we have a lovely dev team, and they deserve to know that.

Posted: 07 Feb 2017 08:57 PM PST

I feel like they deserve some support at this point.

Sure, i have my gripes with the game from time to time, but the Anet team are lovely people. They talk to us way more than many other dev teams, and to me it really comes across how these are real people, passionate about their game.

Yes, the patch may be late, but one can hardly take the unpredictability of storms into account when setting a timeframe. Working through the night to get a release out after the place they work got hit by a huge snowstorm is very much commendable dedication, i feel.

Thus, here's to all the lovely people out there at Anet. May our energy be with you \o/

SPOILER. The easter egg of the very last room of this episode:

Posted: 08 Feb 2017 04:17 PM PST

It was a hidden room back in the day, which was glitched but still accessible at that time through some work.

So its really neat to see that little secret room that scared the shit out of me back in the day to be implemented like this. :D

WvW - Some problems/ideas

Posted: 08 Feb 2017 06:52 AM PST

As had been a common theme for WvW there are still a lot of issues that need addressing, so here is my attempt at a few of them.

1.Balance - Arguably the most important thing in the game mode as no matter what you do you are fighting. Currently WvW has the "Melee Ball" meta particularly for guild fights, this and the "Boon share" meta are the first that have precluded both caster and focus party play. This has been generally seen as one of the least fun meta's for guild play, with many guilds disbanding or players quitting the game, guild fights frequently lasting 3+ minutes frequently more and individuals impact been visually lessened. Also balance patches bring with it new challenges for guilds with theory crafting, builds party comps and overall tactics. This brings old players back into the game and gives new challenges to existing players.

The two main things that need addressing in this meta is the Boon up time and damage mitigation. With permanent: Protection, regen, vigor, swiftness, fury and might easily achievable it diminishes the value of the boon if everyone can always have it. Whilst Boon ripping can be used to counter this it still removes a level of skill from fights, from protection and defensive skills to might and offensive boons. Many of the issues with boon up time comes from: Superior Rune of Durability and the Plate of Mussels Gnashblade, both of which are out of balance with other options in WvW.

The amount stack able damage reductions in WvW with: protection 33%, food 10%, frost armour 10% and Rite of the Great Dwarf 50% this means most wvw groups sit on 43% damage reduction without been boon ripped. The main issue with this is that it forces groups to play of boon ripping and limits play style. Whilst what would need to be changed in a balance patch does vary on opinion, historically balance patches do renew interest and encourage players to try out something new. It is very much the case of a change is as good a break. Like with PvP its important that WvW is balanced desperately, for instance the Nerf to Fire trait line on Ele whilst making sense in PvE did not for WvW.

2.Rewards - Whilst WvW has gained reward tracks which have helped with this, there are still some issues.Mainly are no goals for experienced players in WvW, there are no late game items or prestige items of any sort. Whilst it doesn't have to be the most rewarding game mode some long term goals would be a great addition. Some solutions to this could be;

  • Legendary back piece

  • A lootable weapon set from enemies (Easy way of making this go further would be having the same looking

  • Weapons but a different colour depending on borderland) and could use a similar system to golden fractal weapons to unlock with currency if you got the same drop twice *Ascended Armour

  • Achievement points for reaching Bronze/Silver/Gold etc (Or some extra reward reaching each milestone)

  • Permanent Potion of Ascalonian Mages(Actually this can just be on the gem store and i'd still be happy)

3.Ascended armour- Been able to buy some with Memories of Battle/Badges of honour/Proof of heroics. (Really should be in as PvP has one now) Depending on if Pug Zerging,Roaming,Commanding or in guild raids can all require different gear combinations. For example whilst my Ele/Tempest has only needed berserker and scholar runes since ascended came out in PvE, in WvW my ele has used Berzerker, Valkyrie, Marauder and Minstrel. This is also especially important for WvW because unlike PvP where its free to swap runes and sigils, or PvE where you just don't have to, WvW often requires runes changes sigil changes and has consistently used the most expensive food. All of that on top of now having Tactivators and Siege to buy makes WvW an expensive game mode where you can't buy Ascended armour, which doesn't really add up.

4.Bugs - Getting stuck in walls(whilst entertaining annoying) Waypointing to spawn from hills and ending upon another map (this can make you be stuck in a queue for over an hour and can ruin an evening gaming) You can still hit both gates of Green side EB keep with 1ram

5- Quality of life stuff

  • Make Squads sort people in class order so we can make parties more easily.(So we can check 2guards for stablity etc)

  • Quentin lake hasn't had a bridge for 2years now :P (if you look at map still has a bridge with water under)

  • Siege Bag slot on gem store ? :3

  • Be able to Queue reward tracks so we don't waste participation on tracks we don't want (would be nice in pvp also)

  • Skill lag ( I know its not an easy fix but i can hope)

Just a few idea's i had, im not really sure what would be a good change to the balance in WvW Nerf boon duration maybe, i do think a change in the meta would be one of the healthiest things of the game mode.

EDIT 1(Population): Someone mentioned population balancing personally i think its a hard one to fix by relinking servers and whatever you do its going to annoy some people. What would be the best way of sorting it imo would be remove all current servers create say 12news ones in EU and only allow a server to go above X population when all the other servers are above that population so each has to go medium-high-veryhigh etc. It would be best to make it so you pick a server upon entering WvW so the more active players get balanced first however this has issues with guilds not ending up together etc. (i mainly didn't mention this because i didn't have any ideas =)

EDIT 2 (Balance): Can't say i worded this bit the best myself or that its a good example, but was more aiming for the point that a change in meta would be good for the community rather than what that change should be =)

I know it's different, but I wonder if it would be possible to have the same thing with the bank access?

[Spoiler] Let's talk lore: season 3, episode 4.

Posted: 08 Feb 2017 02:38 PM PST

So, Caudecus is dead and got more unhinged the more bloodstone he consumed(?)/the more time he spent in his crazy room. Explains his descend from smart schemer to cartoon villain.

Demmi is dead, sadly after three sentences it was back to buisness. At least she's with Tybalt now. (ಥ‸ಥ)
F

Everyone can mesmer portal across the fucking globe.

I'm obviously the worst mesmer on the planet.

Jennah however kicks seventeen kinds of arse for breakfast.

She also increased Logan's friendzone to the size of a small planet.

Everyone is having a good laugh at the pact commander in the meanwhile. While I do enjoy the change in tone compared to THE COMMANDER settling stuff, it's kinda weird that my years of military commandeering haven't left any more authority than "Uh, yeah. Sure. I understand."

While we're at it, Dragon's Watch is NOT selling itself. Also refreshing, also weird to watch after years of badassery indoctrination. Literally no one wants to be in my cool kids club. WTF.

Taimi is going to mindfuck herself with Omadd's Dildotron9000 [black], wich is going to turn out just fine.

Anet did plan all of that shit for years now. Or they just remembered they got that psycho room and wanted to use it. I'm going with the first one. Kudos to that.

Clearing Caudecus' Manor from the other side in was interesting, funny ("I thought they'd have repaired it by now.", lulz) and triggered my Dungeoneer PTSD.

ALL THE LORE. That was great.

Lazarus is a fake. And Majory is fucked. DUN DUN DUNNN.

All in all, I do think that episode did tie quite a bunch of threads quiet nicely down while teasing us with some new stuff.

Last but not least: I'm never going to fight Caudecus without a class that can't maintain at least 20 stacks of stability.

...did I miss anything?

Oh, yeah. The EYE OF JANTHIR, SAUL HIMSELF AND THE ENTIRE RAID STORY. WoodenPotatoes is going to need new pants. Either because of that or because of the naked Lord Faren posing for that Veteran White Mantle Mesmer. Can't unsee.
